"No phones, no lights, no motorcars... lines are from the closing credits of Gilligan's Island.
There are so many little hidden Easter Eggs in the video. Milking the cow into a bowl of corn flakes. Feeding the chickens with pizza. Behind the guy checking his sun dial watch another guy swinging a golf club (and why did he shake the watch?). The bumper sticker on the carriage.
@@richdiddens4059 Yeah, back in the day of wind up watches, you shook them thinking the spring was stuck.
I came down here to issue a demerit for not recognising the GI theme. So many of the reactors don't. I find that sad. But, time marches on... (I don't know practically any of the songs he's parodying for a good twenty years now. But I listen anyway.)
For those that might not know, the blond older lady is Florence Henderson.... better known as Carol Brady on the Brady Bunch... she played the part that Michelle Pfeiffer played in the original video.
I use to watch The Brady Bunch as a kid! 😂 I knew that I knew her but I couldn't remember how! 😅 Thank you for jogging this old man's brain!

White and Nerdy is my favorite overall
I love that "White and Nerdy" was more successful than "Ridin' Dirty" and Don McLean has found himself singing "The Saga Begins" when performing "American Pie" because his grandkids played it so much.
Weird Al's best lyrical flow!
His "living with a hernia " is so spot on. I will get my operation next week.
It would be epic if Weird Al slid into your hospital room in his James Brown pantsuit and performed the song before your surgery. 😅
Good luck, I hope you do not need to wear a truss.
The lyrics, "no phone, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, as primitive as can be", are the lyrics to the theme song of "Gilligan's Island".🤣

"Like A Surgeon" is hilarious!
I would recommend watching Madonna's "Like a Virgin" first, to catch the references in "Like a Surgeon." 8-)
His song "ebay" is good too. And his song " Don't download this song"
Ironically, Madonna actually gave him the idea for it.
Try you don’t really love me anymore
Word Crimes by Weird Al is a MUST!
I saw a comment on another reaction from someone who said that they lived near an Amish community. When this song came out, there were some real Amish watching this video on the TVs at Best Buy. They were laughing, so apparently they were cool with it. :)
Lancaster, PA. It's a trip. And their local farmers market is incredible. Being able to buy NATURAL grown fruit, grass fed beef from farmers who don't use a single hormone antibiotic or processed feed, same with chicken. And the organic natural milk is honestly lifechanging. Not only does it taste 1000x better but the pasteurized milk sold in stores is a sham as all of the health benefits from milk like the billions of pre and probiotics, the good bacteria, is killed.
The FDA leaves the Amish largely alone but their corporate interests are actively raiding small farms for daring to sell natural milk under the guise of safety when it's all a mafia tactic to shut down farms that don't accept their bribes. The FDA, like every other alphabet agency, has been completely corporate captured.
Coolio came around once he actually listened to the song. He apologized for overreacting. When Coolio passed, the first notice I saw was a heartfelt tribute from Al.
Yeah, I heard that too. I think he was feeling insecure and got his feathers ruffled. He didn’t realize being parodied is a good thing. It means you’re being noticed lol. It was cool of him to apologize later.
@@KCohere33 I Coolio's defense, I think he felt like he had created a heartfelt work of art about a portion of the Black experience. To hear that some white guy that he had never heard of was making fun of his song could have been seen as racist. Chamillionaire certainly understood how to deal with the situation!
@@curtismartin2866but tbf White and Nerdy is waaay more modern so not surprising
@@LucasF25 Chamillionaire posted "White and Nerdy" to his Facebook page and embraced the experience. In fact, he credited Weird Al with keeping "Ridin' Dirty" popular longer than it would have been and influencing Grammy voters.
@@curtismartin2866 Oh no, I'm just saying that with Weird Al being the Legend that he is today, it's even easier to understand the honor that it is and to just take it easy. Coolio eventually came to this conclusion too, but yeah
It's ironic that Coolio got ruffled over Weird Al's cover of Gangsta's paradise when Gangsta's paradise was a rework of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise".
Yeah like WTH
At least he got over it eventually. He even said that he wished he HADN’T been so mad. It actually made Gansta’s Paradise more popular.
Well he got mad because Weird Al never asked first.
Which Al thought he had asked. Coolio’s agent lied to Al, and gave home the green light.
So really Coolio and Al were neither in the wrong. His agent screwed them both over.
And Stevie wonder would not approve of coolio’s version unless it was cleaned up & then demanded and received over 90 percent of royalties. Coolios version is a complete rip off.
@@mikechiarelli6895
I don’t know. I’ve seen Stevie sing it with Coolio.
In the last segment where everything is moving backwards, I heard Weird Al learned to mouth the words and move backwards so as to appear normal 😮😮😮
He did.... he talked about it on an interview show.
Yup. He was so damn creative and talented.
That's Florence Henderson from The Brady Bunch in the video. Weird Al is awesome. Thanks guys.
Coolio was only upset at first. Apparently his agent or label gave Weird Al permission without actually consulting Coolio, or something like that. However, once Coolio found out that Michael Jackson loved what Weird Al had done with parodies of his songs, Coolio decided he couldn't be mad if MJ was cool with it. :)
MJ the molester had NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with Coolio coming around. He learned that he was being seen as a whiny douche for objecting and so reversed course.
Need to do “white and nerdy” parody of “ridin dirty”
One of the most creative guys in the business.
You are right on that
Not too many young ones are aware that the melody which Coolio uses in "Gangsta Paradise" (I hesitate to call it "sampling", since the melody is heard all through the song) wasn't created by Coolio. It's, in fact, a song composed by Stevie Wonder in the 70's: "Pastime Paradise".
glad I'm not the only one who remember this
@@danielepps8729 From Stevie Wonder's masterpiece double album, "Songs in the Key of Life".
One his best, by far, "Word Crimes" based on the song "Blurred Lines." Check it out.
White & Nerdy! One of his best !
White & Nerdy is a must. (Ridin Dirty)
The second last scene was actually shot backwards, with Al singing the lyrics backwards so that when it was played forward, it looks like he is just singing normally.
Just Al doing Al things.😆
Weird Al is protected by law doing these parodies and doesn't need to get approval from the artist lol he just reaches out to them out of respect 😂
If you pay attention at the end, he learned how to sing the song backwards so when they recorded it in reverse he was singing it normal.
Weird AL is The G.O.A.T. 👍👍👍👍
You know you made it when Weird Al covers your song
This parody song was HUGE back in the day. I believe it even charted on MTV and VH1.
The fact that he added gilligan to island theme song is genius
Coolio got used that Weird Al did his take on this song. That said, Coolio essentially used Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" for most of his version.
This song is not just a testament to the brilliance of Al Yankovic, more importantly it's a testament to the brilliance of one of the greatest artist of all time. His song was turned into a rap song and then into a parody of a rap song. I don't think that's ever been done any other time. Stevie Wonder we are all humbled by your greatness.
Coolio thought that the parody at the time was "stupid" and he wished that someone on his management had stopped him (Weird Al), but later Coolio thought the parody to be "funny". I think he had a love, hate relationship with the song.
That was Coolio's statement, as he was concerned with his image. His peers would have looked down on him if he hadn't seemed upset. His statements are like a woman's the morning after they say yes and then is worried that others will look down on them later, so in the morning after, they say no.
This is to say, behind-the-scenes, Coolie never had a problem with this parody.
@@jameshelm2847or the money
There is one part of the video that shows just how talented Weird Al truly is, the end of the video. He mouths the words and walks BACKWARDS while everyrhing else is moving forward and then they play it backwards for the video so it looks like everything else is in reverse.
Agreed, very creative.
"No phones, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, as primitive as can be," is taken straight from the opening theme song for the 1960s TV sitcom Gilligan's Island.
The next scene of Amish Paradise, showing the barn raising and the wall frame coming crashing down around Weird Al's character, pays homage to silent film star and stuntman extraordinaire Buster Keaton and a famous scene of real danger from his film Steamboat Bill, Jr.
I'd say there was a little Witness thrown in there, as this came out in 1996, and Witness (1985) was a hot Harrison Ford movie with similar scenes and that was still a very popular movie at the time.
Like a Surgeon is the closest he has gotten to tasking a request for a parody from an artist. Apparently Madonna, in passing, made a.joke that she wondered how long it would take him to make a like a surgeon parody. And word of this made it to Al and the rest is history.
Party like it's 16 99 refers to Prince's song "1999" that includes in chorus "party like

"Party like it is 16 99" refers to Prince's song named "1999", which was recorded in 1982.

At the beginning, he says that his wife is "plain". that IS literally how they refer to themselves, especially their muted color fabric pallet. As opposed to fancy, colorful clothes that they feel are prideful. It DOES NOT refer to being ugly in face or body, as we might use "plain". More like a plain bagel vs. a flavored one.
Memory of the original song: Back in the day me and a friend decided to try and record Gangsta's Paradise off the radio, just when it came out, on a cassette tape. Just hit record and then hope to catch it along the way. Our jaws dropped when the song started playing the millisecond the radio was turned on.
Nice...
Weird Al? Yes please! More of this!
Edit: The thing about Coolio's issue is that he himself wasn't asked directly. His LABEL approved the parody, but never bothered to inform HIM about it. He found out later after the song had been released. But also, he HAS "come around" on it, and has no beef at all with Al, realizing that it was down to a misunderstanding.
This information comes from sources relating to both Al and Coolio himself. Al actually felt bad that Coolio learned of the parody after it dropped, and apologized to him. While not being legally required to do so, Al has always asked permission to do parodies of original songs. The only person to turn him down was Michael Jackson for one of his songs, and MJ was one of his biggest supporters. He just felt the song was "too important to parody".
Check prince. Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin
Prince also turned Al down. Hard and always. Prince had some kind of weird fear of Weird Al. He even demanded that Al not make eye contact with him during the Grammy show they both attended.
My favorite Weird Al song is probably White and Nerdy. 😂
You should watch it again because the last scene, where Al sings and walks backwards, is incredible!!!
Important to also know that Coolio reworked it from Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise. 😉
I was looking for this comment. It’s hilarious Coolio was angry at first after Weird Al parodied his song, despite taking the sample from Stevie Wonder.

Next you have to react to Weird Al "The Saga Begins", It parodies "American Pie" by Don McLean (Then maybe listen to Home Free do American Pie WITH Don, as well as Vincent)
There's so much Weird Al to enjoy! "The Ebay Song", "Foil", "Handy", and "Word Crimes" are some of my favorites.
The barn falling was an homage to a Buster Keaton stunt. Weird Al said he was scared because of how precise it had to new.
Didn't they do that in one take because it was too dangerous to try again?
Some video stand outs:
- Florence Henderson
- Barn wall frame falling around Weird Al is a stunt with some injury risk involved
- Backwards filming at the end where Weird Al is mouthing in sync with the singing takes skill
Bums me out that young reactors don't recognize Florence Henderson (Carol Brady!) Means I'm old. White & Nerdy is another great rap parody and great video
"White And Nerdy" is a good one, along with "Another One Rides The Bus", a take off of Queen's "Another one Bites The Dust". 😂
White and Nerdy! Donny Osmond in the background is the best!
What i love most about this song is its kinda the same message as the original, but as if the Amish did it. Its a song about amish life, and gives the positives and negatives pretty well. Its a gangsta rap from the least gansta population, and i love that.
Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson} in the video! Cool! Lots of parodies from the genius Weird Al. You have to checkout parodies including "Another One Rides The Bus" on a Queen's song and a Chamillionaire's "Ridin" turned into "White & Nerdy" and you can't forget Michael Jackson's "Bad" song turned into "Fat". Good reaction guys.
Al said Paul McCartney wouldn't approve Chicken Pot Pie for Live and Let Die because Paul is vegetarian.
love Weird Al, one of his best songs IMHO is an original of his called One Minute More, the ultimate break-up song... thanks for the great vid
Great reaction as always. Since you like hip hop, you should like Weird Al's song White and Nerdy. Great song, and the video is hilarious, with celebrity guests in it as well.
one of hus earliest: Another One Rides The Bus, you`ll love it
White and Nerdy is the pinnacle of Weird Al’s hip hop career. Dude’s spitting bars - got to check it out
Saw him in concert last year and it was great lol .. Go Al🤟
The part in the end where everything is going backwards is actually being played in reverse. Al learned the lyrics backwards to lip synch them, and he's actually walking backwards and singing backwards while everything else is going forward. Incredible dedication on his part.
And the "I'll get medieval on your hiney" is a reference to Pulp Fiction.
This is easily my favorite Weird Al song ever. It is sooo funny. Another great song to check out is their parody of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit called Smells Like Nirvana!!
they already did it
Still stands as the best parody song of all time. It just never gets old.
Yeah, if you live in an area with a lot of Amish, you're going to buy some Amish-grown produce sometimes. They particularly like to grow the sorts of things that are generally hand-picked anyway, like tomatoes and green peppers, probably because that puts them at less of a disadvantage compared to more heavily mechanized agribusinesses. Sometimes you might not even know that it came from them; they commonly sell at produce auctions and bulk-produce clearing houses, and the results can end up on store shelves and at farmer's markets.
Some more songs from Weird Al you might want to check out include:
"Achy Breaky Song" ("Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus)

"Gump" ("Lump" by The Presidents of the United States of America)
"Living with a Hernia" ("Living in America" by James Brown)

NOTE: Not all of these songs will have an official music video
Coolio, this is a Stevie Wonder song, Pastime Paradise
From the great Songs in the Key of Life album (1976).
But the song is a parody of Coolio's version
"Living in a fridge" is also a work-of-genius masterpiece!
The true original song is a Stevie Wonder track called "Pastime Paradise" (1976).
Great reaction! Weird Al is my favorite performer of all time. Here is my recommended process for going down the Weird Al rabbit hole:
- First buy the "In 3D" tape and learn every word to every song
- Before watching the "Eat It" video, be sure to watch MJ's "Beat It" video first
- The parodies on that tape are also "Theme from Rocky XIII (aka: The Rye or the Kaiser)" for "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor, "I Lost On Jeopardy" for "(Our Love's In) Jeopardy" by Greg Kihn and "King of Suede" for "King of Pain" by The Police
- At some point do a deep dive on "Polkas on 45." Be sure to have a GenXer from the 80s enrich your understanding by offering their perspective relative to the references in this song.
- Buy the "Dare to be Stupid" tape and learn every word to every song
- The parodies on that tape are "Yoda", "Like a Surgeon", "I Want a New Duck" and "Girls Just Want to Have Lunch" for the songs "Lola", "Like a Virgin", "I Want A New Drug" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by The Kinks, Madonna, Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper, respectively.
- Add "This Is The Life" to your shower songs
- Add "One More Minute" to your Ex-revenge song list
- Watch the MJ video "Bad" before watching "Fat"
- Weird Al always gets permission. His one lapse in due diligence was with Coolio, and rather than hearing it from the performer, he was given permission by one of his trusted people. Later they both settled the air and let the public know that it is all water under the bridge, and that they resolved any (small) issues that may have arisen from any misunderstandings.
- Proof of this: Weird Al's album "Poodle Hat" has a parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" called "Couch Potato." At the last minute, Eminem announced that he did not want Al to make a video. He felt that it would undermine his credibility as a serious rapper. Al was upset. Album number 11 would be the only album Al ever made without a video! So he did a mock interview with Eminem about it on his Al TV show. Eminem took it well, and was a good sport about it. You can see it here:

If you get this far, let me know. There is much more, and layers and levels and such as well. Hopefully you are fine with me writing this much. I just grew up with Weird Al Yankovic and am happy to know that his genius has spanned so many decades, creating new fans along the way! 8-) 😎
Weird Al is a genius.
If you're into Star Wars you'll love "The Saga Begins"...
I HOPE they will react to that, a parody of "AMERICAN PIE" Of course, they would have to be familiar, very familiar to the STAR WARS Parts 1, and 2 and to "American Pie" to "GET IT" since it describes what happens in the very first Episode of Star Wars ( that came after the orginial Parts IV, V, and VI) It tells the beginning of Luke Skywalker, as a child, plus Darth Vader, and Obi Wan Kenobi as young men. IF they haven't seen that movie, they won't understand the parody.
Weird Al isn't just a singer musician and songwriter. When it comes to Rapping he can absolutely throw down some bars. Suggest you check out his Parody of Puff Daddy "It's All About The Pentiums (Baby)". With your Hip-Hop background that one should have you in stitches. And the great thing about it is it's actually a totally stone cold Dis Track.
the last scene where Al is walking and everything around him is moving in reverse is amazing when you consider that he memorized the lyrics backwards and HE was walking and singing backward in one shot
The wooden building frame falling around Al was real. He said in an interview how scared he was during that scene. I'm sure they practiced having it fall multiple times before he actually found a good place to stand.
Yes he did get the okay from the record company and when he found out that Coolio was upset he sent him a letter apologizing saying he was under the impression he was ok with it after Coolio received the letter he calmed down
I like how he throws in part of the lyrics from the ending theme song to Gilligan's Island in the song. 'No lights, no boats, no motor cars, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Caruso, is primitive as can be."
I saw an interview with weird Al about this song. He said that the side of the barn falling down was not faked in any way. His director told him where to stand. He also told him not to move, or you will die.
The reverse but at the end was brilliant. Al learned how to mouth the words backwards.
Weird Al goes on tour regularly; I saw him 5 years ago and he ended the show with Amish Paradise - in costume, of course.
The magazine’s cover article is titled “Plow my Fields”.
4:33 In the Northeast US there was an electronics chain (crazy Eddies) whose slogan was "Our prices are insane". They went bankrupt 7 years prior to this video.
If you have the chance, see Weird Al in concert, he and his band still tour. My husband and I have seen him 3 or 4 times. Best concerts ever, fun for young and old.
Not sure if you’ve seen his movie “UHF” but it is classic
Brady Bunch mom 🤣
Beat me to it. LOL
This man is a genius! He gratuated high school at 16 and was the valedictorian. then went to architecture college and graduated in three years. He can come up with words for songs that fit into the phrasing of the song. He is very popular too, did you notice Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady Bunch) and Dick Van Patten (eight is enough). I have a hip-hop suggestion "White and Nerdy" ( "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone). this video has Donny Osmond in it.
If you think Coolio is a one hit wonder you need to hear / watch “Fantastic Voyage”.
“1,2,3,4 (Sumpin New)” was another big hit of his
This song Amish Paradise by Weird Al Yankovic it hit on Billboard Hot 100 on March 30, 1996 and it peaked at 53 and was on the charts for a total of 16 weeks and this was his 11th single to single that followed this one is Gump.
Last week Al put out HD versions of like 30 of his videos, check it out
I love "White and Nerdy," and "Handy" is fun too!
To answer your question, Coolio made a big stink about it at the time. It was some awards show or something where he denigrated it on live TV. I remember watching it at the time and I was thinking "You stole it from Stevie Wonder you no-talent putz". He did indeed face a lot of backlash over that stance. Eventually he changed his tune.
This is my favourite Weird Al video, partly because of the parallels with the original (and I like the song better than his other close videos), partly because of the humour, partly because of the utterly brilliant backwards scene. My favourite Weird Al _song,_ however, is either _The_ _Saga_ _Begins_ or _One_ _More_ _Minute._
*You should always watch the video for the original song just prior to watching the Weird Al parody, even if you don't react to it because you know the song.*
The "original" is "Pastime Paradise" (no rapping) by Stevie Wonder released in 1976 from the "Songs in the Key of Life" album, but Weird Al's version is a parody of "Gangsta Paradise."
I used to live in Lancaster and this is hilarious and factual.

2. Handy - Iggy Azalea Fancy paridy
3 Trapped in the Drive Thru - R Kely, Trapped in a closet parody
There tons more but that is a few of my favorites
BARS & BARBELLS, awesome video I really liked it
So here's the story about the song's controversy. Even though Al isn't required by law to get permission for his parodies, he always does because he respects the artists. He sent a request to Coolio through his representation. When Coolio learned of Al's interest, he denied Al permission. Gangsta's Paradise was Coolio's magnum opus and he didn't want to risk cheapening it's important message by having it associated with a comedy sketch. Well apparently, someone in Coolio's representation (probably blinded by greed and the prospect of the song getting the 'Yankovic Bump') communicated to Al's people that Coolio had given his consent. The lie came out when Coolio held a press conference to call Al out on going against his wishes. Al immediately apologized and asked if there was anything he could do to make it up to Coolio, but Coolio never responded. It was something like 10 years before Coolio was able to put it behind him. I think somebody asked Coolio about it in like 2020 or something and he said that being such a butthead about it was one of the biggest regrets of his life.
You have to do “You don’t love me anymore “ it’s one of his original. It’s hilarious
