I assume you know that Pentatonix got their start on the third season of _The Sing-Off,_ in 2011. All of those performances can still be found on TH-cam, including the reactions of the judges afterwards, and they're fascinating to watch, preferably in order so that you can see the band grow. After one of the earliest performances they were criticized by the judges for straying too far from the original. ONCE. That's all it took; they never made the same mistake again. Just before the performances the show would give highlights (or lowlights) from what the group was doing between performances - discussing their choice(s) for the next performance, who would do what, what changes they should make, rehearsing, and actually talking to the camera about what they were thinking. The producers had made it obvious that they wanted the cameras that were following them around to catch some moments of angst, disagreement among the bandmembers, anxiety about their choices, any kind of negative energy they could come up with, so Pentatonix obliged them. They would talk about "I'm afraid people will say we've changed this song too much," or "Well I think we should do it this way and you think we should do it that way so we have a flat out disagreement here." But it was clear to anyone who knew what was going on that most of that was manufactured for the camera; they were actually fairly confident that they were making good choices, and we never saw any indication of what the flat-out disagreement was actually about or how they dealt with it - for all we know it may have been about what kind of pizza to have for lunch. The judges assumed all of that was genuine (they pretty much had to) and spent a certain amount of time reassuring Pentatonix that their final choices were good ones, and advising them to continue being concerned about these things because it clearly resulted in their making good music. But when it came to their after-performance critiques, there was one thing that the judges said repeatedly, in a variety of wordings: "You keep surprising us. Every week it's a new surprise. The danger is that you'll change the song too much in order to produce the surprise, and it won't really be the same song any more, but so far you haven't done that. The question is, how long can you keep it up?" (By my count, so far it's just over eleven years, with no end in sight.) Pentatonix learned that lesson well, all the way back when they were Babytonix, and they've never forgotten it. They ALWAYS treat the original song, the songwriter(s), and the original artist(s) with utmost respect. They start by getting the song right, and only then do they upgrade it. And their upgrade never wrenches the song away from what it already was - it always makes the song a more perfect version of itself. How do they do that? I don't know, anymore than I know how Kirstin produces those fantastic whistle notes, or how Kevin beatboxes, or how Mitch can sound so ethereal in one song and just belt the high notes out in the next song. As far as I can tell, these are people who eat, breathe, and dream music; it infuses every part of their lives. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of pop. Where the original artists are still alive they know most of them personally, so they can always ask questions. But they've augmented their intuitive understanding of how music is put together with a lot of study. They KNOW how to do a mash-up so that it respects both songs, while still making them fit together, and they do that regularly. Could I do that? No; my talents don't run that way, and no amount of study could make up for that lack. But their talents do run that way, and we're fortunate that they found each other.
j$ here (she). I knew you would like this video!!!!!! And yes, they do pay attention to every beat/note in the upgrades they do. They respect the original & then make it their own! KO & Matt ROCKED this song from start to finish. Of course so did Kirstie, Scott & Mitch. Thanks so much for a GREAT reaction to such a GREAT video.
as much as I love The Prayer, this is my favorite PTX song. It's soooo good. Saw Dua Lipa in concert last year and I couldn't stop myself from singing "are you that somebody" under my breath at the appropriate times, lol
You're doing a great job with your reactions. Watching your face and your expressions are a joy. Thank you for vulnerability. These reactions truly help my mental health knowing you've found happiness from watching them.
Don't worry about the snack. My sister was once described as "like the pleasure of a plateful of bacon and eggs in the morning". To put it mildly, she was not pleased!
Unfortunately Kirstin lost most of her hotness and cuteness after pumping her lips up like Fat Albert. Why in the world do women do that to themselves?
'la la latch' is another great mashup.
This is New Rules! Great song! Thanks
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
