Scott did put PTX together in that he wanted to try out for The SingOff with high school friends Mitch and Kirstie. But they needed a minimum of 5 members for the show. So a friend helped him find Avi, and then they found Kevin through a YT video of Kevin cello-boxing that went viral.

Scott, Kirstie & Mitch were a group. Scott encouraged them to do the sing off show. They needed to have 5 people to qualify. They were introduced to Avi(bass) by a friend & found Kevin (beatboxer & cellist) on you tube. They won the competition. A I left for personal reasons & Matt replaced him as bass. They all sing over many octaves. Someone commented that with their range; they can sing anything.
Check out Can’t Hold Us to see just how fast they can rap. Scott found out about the Sing Off so I guess he got the group together in a sense. He is the tallest so I think that’s why he’s almost always in the middle.
No excuses not to see them...lol, 3 years ago I traveled 14 hours to see them, 2 years ago I drove 3 hours and in a little over a week I'm driving 14 hours to see them again...SOOOOOO 😁
Yes....he got the ball rolling for PTX with their co-arranger, Ben Bram, but one reason I think he is always front and center is that he has a ridiculous range, low to high, and has so much voice versatility. Just my opinion.

The five of them literally got together for the first time just a couple days before the audition. And the rest is history! 😅
Kevin was playing with the beat and drum sounds, putting the songs together. Scott was walking by and loved it, so he asked if they could do it as a Pentatonix cover (upgrade) and Kevin was excited. They got together, pitched it then figured out the vibe for the video And Scott is technically the defacto leader

THEY ARE THE BEST A CAPELLA GROUP I HAVE EVER HEARD. IT TAKES ALOT OF PRACTICE, COORDINATION, IN SYNCHRONIZATION, ETC. THERE IS NO WAY THEY COULD HAVE DONE THAT ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT TO PRODUCE WHAT YOU JUST SAW.. BILLY BOY
No one really like reactors rating Pentatonix songs. (I don't like it for any songs.) So, thanks. This PTX video is one of my favorites. Their voices are magical together.
😊👉Scott did help form PTX w/Ben Bram, added were his childhood friends Kirstie and Mitch who grew up together in TX doing musical theater and choir..And in high school they were known as The Trio Scott has always been the more of the spokesman of the group ALSO his 6'4" so it looks esthetically pleasing when he is in the middle or sometimes Scott and Kevin 6'1" stand in the back...
Aside from all the good info everyone has given below, just think about the fact that Scott is the tallest. So if there's a formal picture, he naturally ends up in the middle. He's 6 ft 3 inches.

I think Scott is in the centre mostly because he is the tallest and ascetically it's pleasing to the eye
