This is very reassuring Bill thanks 👍 I've only been picking for 3 years and mostly second hand pin tumblers but I recently snapped my most cherished sparrow on my own door which could have been sorted with some micra. I was trying to show off to my wife, who is still berating me for the number of locks and pick sets I've been playing with. PS I'm EMS in the UK where we normally use the Fire Service to gain entry to patients which usually involves them busting the door, if YT had a speedial function you'd be my #2 some of the stubborn oldies here still have beautiful old school doors and locks. You're an international public service big man 👍
I just snapped my first sparrows pick. It was my short hook and after 2 years, 100s and 100s of opens and loads of videos it finally gave in and snapped. But definitely a good run with 2 years of use. 👍🤘🖖🍻
@darkartslockpicking Sparrows have in the past, had some issue with movement on their cutting set-up, which can put a notch in the shaft, that concentrates the stress and breaks the pick really quickly. They also don’t orient them in my experience, so the high yield 301 is made to amplify the breakage probability. Position the blank coil set grain, against your natural picking bend and it’ll 10x the life of your picks.
I've only snapped two bought picks so far, but I'm always bending and breaking the ones I make to experiment with. Some locks are just 'pick eaters' and I don't want to risk my favourite sparrows picks getting broken in those, so I file down the cheap Chinese ones (that come with the perspex padlocks) and they work well, but break really easily as they're too hard.
@@penfold7800 The secure pro Chinese pick sets are amazingly good for workhorse picks, the cost like £3 and are actually well dimensioned and made from good steel.

Ok, I don't feel so bad that I have bent almost all of my hooks opening locks with spools. You guys make it look so easy, that I thought I was just lousy as picking and being too rough on my tools.. Now I wont feel so guilty about buying new picks. Thanks.
Try tension in reverse, what i mean is hold slight pressure on the pin while slowly releasing tension on the wrench until you feel the spool go up just enough to tension back into the your false set then work on the next pin that's giving feedback, cool thing i noticed about spools is it doesnt take alot of tension if barely any to hold it where you're at, also gotta keep loose tension to feel which ones giving feedback
Great video, I don’t feel so bad about breaking a pick now and again. I haven’t broken a pick in a long time using the theory of staying within the picks elasticity range (metal returning to its original shape after deformation) if you pass this range or pressure on the pick you’re toast, the metal will take on its new deformed shape also known as plasticity, now that the pick has an altered form it will be weak and begin the process of slowly snapping. This technique unfortunately means applying less pressure to the pins than you want to or need to at times. If you are a beginner putting together your first set I would recommend selecting a brand of pick that you can easily replace all of the individual picks in your set - sparrows is generally great at this.
I dribbled coffee on myself when I saw all the picks. I love picking locks. For me it is a relaxing hobby? sport? Whatever you want to call it. Dang it! Was struggling with a Wilson Bohannon so I searched out one of your old WB videos. It recommended using more tension than I was using so I went to work. Broke my Bogata right after watching this broken pick video. Lol. I guess I was definitely trying hard enough.
Towards the end, after saying "and that's everything in my toolbox..." I was hoping you'd follow that with "and that will be this week's giveaway!" 🤣 (A guy can dream)
I am having a field day going through your videos. I got into lock picking in the 80's watching "Remington Steele" As a security guard I had a lot of time to practice. At the time the internet was just an idea and buying picks was impossible. So I made my own. I used steel strapping that was used to hold cargo on wood pallets. Worked great but they broke easily. I live in Canada and who would you suggest I buy from ?
Have you ever tried annealing picks? I'm assuming they are taking on a set because they have been work-hardened. I guess, probably, the plastic might melt unless you use a copper heatsink or something. Maybe this would be a use for one of those cheap, Chinese induction heater DIY projects.
I have read about this in an old guide to homemade picks. It described a process to be done in a home oven. I don't really know what kind of heat would be needed. I'm sure this guide was intended for the budget-minded DIY-er, or to recover a pick that was ground too hot during its creation.
I remember my first bent pick, an HPC hook I was devastated. The pick that broke, was a mini hook I had made from stainless steel--an old knife. It must have overheated, but it was a good lesson. Picks break. I don't feel bad anymore.
I know that Amazon has their subscribe and save program where they send you the item monthly without you needing to manually order them each time, I wonder if any of the pick manufacturers have that same sort of thing?
The envy, that collection is spectacular... I have to make all my own picks XD Too broke consistently to afford to buy picks, but that being said, I do love it.
I don’t know if you know this @bosnianbill but the steel most pick makers use, is rolled 301 high yield. After many years of working with it and supplying the locksport community in the UK and beyond, I’ve found an interesting Achilles heel. Firstly as we know, all rolled commercial picks and blanks, have coil set, which means they have ideal strength/resistance to deformation in one direction, but are very weak in the other and will readily bend. Most pick makers, do not orient their blanks, so it’s pot luck, whether your picking style compliments or ruins the pick. If you pick in the wrong direction, it will easily bend and go through many fatigue cycles and break prematurely. If you position it rightly, it will last a huge amount longer. This is why in the UK, those that supply pickmaker blanks, mark every blank, denoting where the left side should be and the tip. Secondly, and this is the interesting bit. Rolled steel exhibits a major problem if handled improperly. Never, ever, twang or ping a pick blank or bought pick shaft. This has some kind of annealing effect, ruining the blank in one stress spot and turning it from a spring steel blank, into a kinked piece if scrap, which will definitely break in the region of the kink. You can see this in a blank, if you reflect the light off it and change the angle of view, you’ll see the obvious kink and it is now ruined. It takes very light plucking to do this, so never shock your picks, they’ll die prematurely and cost you a lot more. I might do a pick makers vid about this behaviour, because it’ll save locksporters a heap of money and stop their picks bending.💪🥰🤣❤️
Damn, severe lock pick envy going on over here! When the hook drawer opened, my eyes went straight to that Ratyoke 🤤 Love these types of videos, thanks as always Bill!
Jensen tool boxes are not made from ABS. ABS would not work well for a tool box as it is too brittle. Instead, they are in fact made from rotational moulded polyethylene (the same material as clear plastic bags) which is very impact resistant.
LOL!!! How coincidental! I've been (because of finding Bosnian Bill's videos) into Locksport for about 5 years now, taking a 1 year break until recently. The first pick I ever broke, was a Southord City Rake. Second pick I broke, was one of the King/Queen duo, from a chinese set. That's it so far. Just 2 broken picks. And I know why. Until recently, I was a horrible SPP picker. That's because I wasn't leveraging my picks off of the warding, or the bottom of the keyway when I could have been. I was lifting the pin with the strength of my wrist and fingers only. When I realized I can "pry" or "fulcrum" the pins, using a ledge of some kind, I started breezing thru SC1 keyways, as well as other types. I expect to start breaking more picks starting soon!
Wow, Bill you are awesome and have every tool known to man! Also weapons that I would love to have as well! Great review and truly even better giveaway! Keep up the truly best giveaways on TH-cam!

He thinks it's a waste to throw so much stuff away instead of fixing it. He's asking if hear treatment will work. Of course the answer is yes and maybe. It depends on what the material is, how far along the fatigue is, and how much time, effort and money someone is willing to invest. Here is something talking about the process of normalizing metal. I cannot figure out how you came up with "Bosnianbill", but I love your and LPL's videos. Started picking myself because of you guys. Anyway, greetings and all the best from Bosnia!
Everyone breaks picks, when I first started I couldn’t really afford to buy commercial picks, so I made picks from windshield wiper insert, I had a hook that I really loved, and I was able to get into quite a few locks, then one day I put way to much tension on a lock and I tried to force a pin and broke my pick, I did later make a really nice short hook that worked absolutely flawlessly, I could get into so many locks, I still have it and it’s a great pick. Every beginner will break a pick, and later as you learn you will start to realize you don’t need a ton of tension and you also don’t need to apply a ton of force on your pick.
"this is where I keep my spare picks." Pulls out three manufacturer's warehouses worth of stock. me: I don't feel like I've spent too much money on lock picking now. THANKS BILL!
Where do you buy individual picks? I know Sparrows sells some, but most of the places I've looked only sell sets? And I don't need to buy a complete set in order to replace a single broken pick.
watching some Bill's vids where he is bullying those locks, bow bending Multipicks has always been painfull painfull for me. just last week i broke my first pick, even tho i've only been picking for over a month.after watching sooooo many reviews i choose Sparrows, they do SSDEV in 25 and 15 plus for MonstrumXXL you can buy replacements. i personally belive that there isnt a company on market right now, that can beat Sparrows quality and most of all prices. Bill thank you Sir for your part in keeping locksport community going. 👍👍👍
So glad you made this video. I have bent one of my picks and I was wondering if this was normal or if I was doing something wrong. Also, I was wondering if bending it back was ok. Now I know. Thanks!
Jikes! Just bought some picks on Multipick....they are expensive! So, complete drawers full of them...i'm impressed. I'm building my set a few at the time.
I started doing it that way after getting a starter set and making some from wiper blades. I haven't broken any yet but I've already got some duplicates because I'm not smart enough to remember what I have when impulse shopping. Looks like I wasn't completely dumb after all.
Materials Scientist here: Any idea what stainless steel grade is used for those picks and rakes? Plain cold rolled ferritic stainless, I guess. Or higher-end stuff?
Now that's a case i'd love to own 🤣. Just started picking locks, so far i have a small sparrows hook set and some self made tensioners. Can open 5 of the locks i have with it so far. Loving the locksport
@Bosnianbill Can you heat treat the pick to relieve the plastic deformation? Heat it with a torch till it's orange, then quench it. Heat it up again then let it cool slowly. With picks being so cheap it might not be worth the effort, but good for a video. How do you get the tip of a broken tip out of a lock?
This hobby is way more involved than I thought when I started. Hopefully I can build up my competence and collection!
I agree. I started thinking it would be cheap and fun, but buying locks to keep getting better is not cheap.
I think you're confusing hobby with occupation.
You don't have to have tool boxes full of gear to have a hobby. You do to have an occupation.

Every beginner will break a pick, and later as you learn you will start to realize you don’t need a ton of tension and you also don’t need to apply a ton of force on your pick.
"this is where I keep my spare picks."
Pulls out three manufacturer's warehouses worth of stock.
me: I don't feel like I've spent too much money on lock picking now. THANKS BILL!
That collection is amazing! Keep it up bb!
Wow, what a stash !
Sweet case, you got it going on Bill!
Where do you buy individual picks? I know Sparrows sells some, but most of the places I've looked only sell sets? And I don't need to buy a complete set in order to replace a single broken pick.
Multipick also sell singles. Of course they're more expensive than other manufacturers, but they're pretty much the highest quality picks around IMO.
Thank you for the video!
watching some Bill's vids where he is bullying those locks, bow bending Multipicks has always been painfull painfull for me.
just last week i broke my first pick, even tho i've only been picking for over a month.after watching sooooo many reviews i choose Sparrows, they do SSDEV in 25 and 15 plus for MonstrumXXL you can buy replacements. i personally belive that there isnt a company on market right now, that can beat Sparrows quality and most of all prices.
Bill thank you Sir for your part in keeping locksport community going. 👍👍👍
So glad you made this video. I have bent one of my picks and I was wondering if this was normal or if I was doing something wrong. Also, I was wondering if bending it back was ok. Now I know. Thanks!
Wonderful kit, I love it.
You the man Stan!!
Why throw the picks away when you could cut the handles into tension bars? You could probably use your key cutter to do it too.
"And over here, I have an extra Multipick Elite set." Holy Jesus, I thought I had the lockpicking bug bad. That's a helluva toolbox.
"I keep them around _just in case_..." Pun intended? Great video, always nice and inspirational to see how things are organized
Bill what are those black pieces holding the partitions together?
Little brackets I designed and printed on my 3D printer. If you want the stl file, let me know. bosnianbill1 at gmail.
So, is there any way to retemper the metal on the hooks?
No
Great to see your broken picks and even cooler to see that tool box! 🤤🤤🤤
Jesus. What a cache of tools. You could break into Fort Knox with all that gear!
Um. I think his name's Bill
I have to ask, where do you get your heat shrink tubing? Trying to do this with all my picks.
Next time I feel like I have a lock picking problem I'm just going to watch this over to remind me it could be worse
An organised toolbox shows an organised mind, very neat I must say ;-)
@BosnianBill could you share the link to the Jensen toolbox seller?
