  • London walk in Surbiton, south west London
    Join me for this 30-minute narrated walk around Surbiton, the birthplace of the Mini Cooper and my home town in south west London, or Surrey if you're being precise. Famous for the Good Life in the 1970s sitcom, Surbiton is commonly seen as the epitome of suburbia, earning the nickname ‘Suburbiton’. It is even arguably the world’s first commuter town brought into being by the trains, devised during the 19th Century to offer country living just a train ride away for London commuters. This is a town that issued season tickets and suffered with congested Monday morning railway services over 100 years ago!
    And THANK YOU for 1000 subscribers:)

    Congrats on 1000 subscribers. Love your walks. We are fine here in Canada. We look forward to your walks. A request would be a walk around the area of the Royal Oak pub from the TV show Goodnight Sweetheart. There is a flower market there on sundays. Playing golf tommorow as they are now open. Take care Chris and Sandra in Canada.

      Thank you Chris, I do hope the golf goes well:) Now that is a very good idea about the Royal Oak pub which I think is in Poplar but walkable from Shoreditch. I had planned to do a Shoreditch walk so can incorporate both of them. I just have to wait for the magical day when 'non-essential travel' becomes alright again... And flower markets and the like can restart too. All the best, Angela

    Hi Angela, Surbiton and Kingston are both very desirable places to live, but what always occurs to me when looking around affluent areas, is where do all the people, shop workers, cleaners, bar staff, all the folks on minimum wages where do they live?
    Surbiton fortunately does have a strong identity, which is important to me, when deciding whether or not I like a place.

    • @ChattyWalkswithAngela
      @ChattyWalkswithAngela  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there John, I hope you are well. It's an interesting question. Within, say, 3-6 miles of Surbiton there are so many different varieties of homes and price ranges. In my experience, a lot of people live semi-locally in eg Worcester Park, Epsom and Ewell, Motspur Park, Tolworth, Chessington etc in addition to Surbiton and Kingston across most of the job spectrum. But there is definitely an issue with this being an area that attracts a lot of 'newcomers' as the incumbent population view it and this pushes up property prices. I myself came here from the west country after getting my degree to experience the London life and actually lived all over the area until settling in Surbiton, which then was cheaper compared to Kingston; these days they are largely similar in price. I actually feel very lucky to have settled here and my street is a very interesting mix of incomers like me and people who were born and bred here.

      Let's Walk London Hi Angela, Thanks for responding to my question, which was prompted by you highlighting Surbiton's London commuter heritage, which I think most people are aware of, as you say it was chosen as the location for The Good Life. Whilst observing this, I noted how many local shops there were, and that it's more than just a place for commuters to live. Some Surrey towns are just that, with very few shops or attractions other than their close proximity to London..
      I feel a degree of sympathy for people who work and contribute to the town, but don't seem to be part of its national identity, and possibly can't afford to live in the town. Hope my perspective makes some sense!!

    Hello again Angela, nice trip!! there is a lot art deco buildings overthere when you look up to the buildings. Very nice. The shops are everywhere the same I think so no comment on that. The station is superb art deco. the English Art Deco is a bit different from the Artdeco here in Holland. We do have a lot of it but there is also a lot gone because we don't have that much space here in Holland in the cities. We do have a lot of building from the 17th centery. I have a question do you have cable in the UK because I see a lot of antennas on the roof still. - greetings Fred

    • @ChattyWalkswithAngela
      @ChattyWalkswithAngela  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there Fred, lovely to hear from you, thank you so much, and yes, if buildings from the art deco era have survived in places then they are lovely. Actually when I research walks, I sometimes find it frustrating that most of the history for anywhere that I go seems to only go back a two or three hundred years, but perhaps I need to be looking elsewhere for older stuff. 17th century buildings in Holland sound lovely. Re: antennas, it's just that no one has bothered to take them all down! They forced the population to change quite a long time ago but all those antennas are still sitting around on top of the buildings. I have written down your ideas for walks; Kew Gardens aren't too far from me and Greenwich has long been on my list. Hemel Hempstead might take longer, quite a drive, but maybe one day. Angela

    Angela how wonderful it was being able to see my hometown! I lived there for about 9 years after moving from Kingston where I spent most of my growing up years.
    I was so amazed at how they haven't spoilt Surbiton, unlike Kingston which has lost all it's charm.
    I used to live in Cranes Park Avenue before emigrating to Australia in mid 1970 and I thoroughly loved living in Surbiton and like I said earlier was very touched by the way it hasn't been "ruined"
    The information you gave during the making of this video was absolutely brilliant and you told things that I never even knew about!

    Hi Angela, I have just come across this video as I am relocating to the area soon! I was just wondering if you have any advice regarding commute to work from Surbiton to Liverpool Street? I am classed as a 'young person' so could get a railcard but not sure what will be the cheapest package for me? I will be commuting 3-5 times a week into the centre. I believe the best route is to Waterloo and then the tube to Bank (and then walk to Liverpool Street). Any advice regarding the cheapest travel option/ package would be very much appreciated! Thank you :)

    • @ChattyWalkswithAngela
      @ChattyWalkswithAngela  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Katie Louise, great to hear from you:) You are right, the best route is Surbiton-Waterloo, then the Waterloo and City Line into Bank, then it's a short walk. Regarding ticket prices, that is a TFL minefield! It's hard to know if your railcard will help, as it depends if you want an annual card to travel, monthly, are travelling off-peak, are travelling regularly every day or only a few days per week. I use my credit card contactless thing rather than buying an Oyster card and always travel off-peak. It looks like you may be able to get a 34% discount with your railcard on those tickets. It's £14.40 per day off peak at a non-discounted price or you can pay for 7 days, one month or a year (but maybe no discount available), but check out the TFL prices pages for your options. Good luck! Angela

    Just watched a walk in Surbiton, and must point out the clock tower in Claremont Road is a monument to Edward V11, not King George.The buildings of historical interest in the same road are the lovely Victorian shops not shown, the Victorian age is what made Surbiton famous.Take a look at Langley Avenue and the surrounding roads for the real history of Surbiton , especially Southborough Park built by John Nash no less!

    • @ChattyWalkswithAngela
      @ChattyWalkswithAngela  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, for some reason my brain on that day just couldn't get it right between George at the Coronation Hall and Edward at the clock tower! If you check out my Southborough video you will see I've covered some of the history of Thomas Pooley etc. Not sure if you walk in the area, but Southborough House is being refurbished and with the trees down it is so nice to see it all again.

      Actually I have been thinking about that one recently, I'll put it on the January list. Are there any bits you think are particularly important for filming?

    Wish you wouldn't make shorter videos. That would forse you to rush some parts, and eliminate others. For the people who wish to watch shorter versions, there is the option of speeding up the video, or just moving the play indicator along to your convenience.

      Thanks Roger, that is really helpful. You are right, I like to cover lots of places and info, so frankly cutting them down would be a challenge. Angela

    Why people don't put on mask in London?

    • @ChattyWalkswithAngela
      @ChattyWalkswithAngela  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could give you a very long answer on that! Put simply, it is not compulsory, just 'highly recommended' on public transport and desirable in enclosed places like shops. The main challenge is people just can't get hold of them plus we are told only to buy reusables to allow the health care professionals to have access to the other ones; if we can find them to buy they are extremely expensive with long waits for delivery to home. This puts off a lot of people.

    Enjoyable but sorry to say that if you are going to give a history of the place you need to do better research as some facts a a bit way off.

      If you could be more precise with which details are incorrect, then do post them here which is what I always ask the community to do, or alternatively I can direct you to the original sources for clarification. For example, the Thomas Pooley information that appears in this and the Southborough video are from www.kingstonhistoryresearch.co.uk/canbury/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/POOLEY-PAPER-29-JUNE-2016.pdf, with other details curated more generally from Kingston History Research amongst many others. For my videos, I research far and wide from sources that are as credible as possible (not Wikipedia) and curate them in as concise a manner as possible to try to add some snippets of history to what is, at the end of the day, a walking channel. The odd error creeps in inevitably under the pressure of walking and talking, but I am an academic by training, so at least try to stick with high quality source materials; I always ask the audience to contribute their expertise too. All the best, Angela
