The lyrics are great and all, but honestly what really gives me the chills is the vocal harmony and particularly Serj's delivery and emotion in that part.

It's the piano in the back for me. Everything you mentioned is absolutely true and accurate but for my ear the quiet, fairly simple piano arrangement in the back is what elevates that part into something i have to finish listening to, even now over 20 years later and heard hundreds of times. It's this sort of sweet but melancholy, melodic, ethereal, just that little tiny extra bit that works so immensely well with the soaring harmonies.

It's one of those songs that you listened to a lot as a kid or teenager but you need to return to it as an adult to really understand it's beauty.
definitely. George Carlin and Eminem are also on that list of artists that I loved when I was in my mid-late teens but I didnt really get the messages yet, or at least I thought it was exaggerated for effect. George Carlin especially saw exactly what was going on and told us straight up what was going on.
SOAD is more subtle usually, but I just did a re-listen to most of their music and I finally understood some of the more obscure stuff.
It's a song with different meanings at different parts of your life.

SAME!! the first album i ever bought new was Toxicity and I listened to it like the way you said like 30-50 times probably. I also learned to play a few of the songs on that album.

shit one of my best memories is having to stay home from school in the 3rd grade because of an ice storm that caused massive power outages across the county. I didn't have fuck all else to do so I borrowed my dads cd player, and started going through his binder collection to find new music to listen to. I ended up settling on mezmerize because the album artwork was dope. I laid down, let it spin, and had a fuckin euphoric experience.

He still has good guest it's kind of a hit or miss for me. Personally I can't listen to the political guest's. The music guests are my favorite and sometime's the educational episode's are cool depending on what it is

Young Jamie is underrated. Already had the section of the song ready for Rick Ruben to playback and exemplify his point. Always ahead. Joe knew exactly what he was doing when getting Young Jamie as the backend of the show.
Saw System at Ozzfest in 2002. They were absolutely great at what was my all time favorite musical event. Legendary lineup. 4 songs brought the entire amphitheater alive 1. Chop Suey 2. More human than human 3. Bodies with the og Drowning Pool lineup and 4. Ozzy doing Mama I’m Coming Home right after Sharon’s cancer diagnosis. An epic night.

SOAD are definitely his best work in my opinion, Toxicity is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It's the only Metal that my dad will listen to, my dad was more into softer rock type stuff, but he would always play Toxicity in the car when I was growing up. It's cool how a band like that can bring in fans to a genre they would never normally listen to.
They are always the band he goes back to. Every interview he mentions them.

Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. From the first time I heard it unto the last time just a moment ago in this clip, I feel the same way about it every single time....chills. And everytime I can't stop myself from dancing, singing, with every part of being from the very first beat and tone to the final note at the end. When finished my face is wet with tears and I feel more awake and more alive than ever. It is an amazing musical arrangement and lyric composition.... beautiful harmony.... profound words... intense.... emotional...

Rick Rubin is responsible for most of the music I love. Beastie Boys, SOAD, Chilli Peppers, Public Enemy, Weezer and Johnny Cash's final comeback were essentials in my life. Truly an amazing talent to have create such great bands and to make great bands better. Respect.
No offense to Rick Rubin but he takes alot more credit than necessary. I'm also a fan, but he just takes a little too much credit for the talent he got to be around!

I HATED System of a Down when they came out. I couldn't stand "Sugar" and when it came on I'd turn the radio off. Then this song came out. It was so mind-blowing to me that I went out and bought both albums and forced myself to listen to them. SOAD is now one of my top metal bands of all time. Truly unique.
Those bands that sound odd at the beginning but you eventually start to embrace and understand after a few listens, those are the ones that will truly stick

@@brynlpz83 Rubin is highlighting this one part of a bigger whole. He’s not “bragging”. It’s about incorporating a tiny piece from somewhere else into the song. What they did was no different from taking a fragment off the ground and putting in a mosiac. It’s not a copy of the entire thing. There’s nothing wrong with this (small) part of the process. All of your favorite artists have done this to some degree.

I remember meeting System of a Down in Baton Rouge in the late 90's. I was talking to their bass player Shavo Odadjian, asking why on Earth was he was playing a hollow body Linc Luthier bass on stage. He told me he really liked them, but I told him the sound and look were completely wrong for his music. I suggested he try a Gibson Thunderbird instead. He was lukewarm to the idea at the time but was cordial and said he'd consider it. Shavo is a very nice guy and we talked for a some time about the band, thier music, and bass playing in general. I even recall Serj Tankian looking over at us wondering what we were so intently chatting about.
A few years passed and I was watching MTV when Chop Suey came on. Sure enough, I immediately recognized the band and noticed that Shavo had ditched his old bass for a Gibson Thunderbird!! I believe Gibson even sponsors him now. I would love to hear from him and find out if he remembered our conversation, but they are so huge it probably has no chance of happening. Anyway, even at the point when I met them, you could tell they had something special and were destined to make it big. Glad to see they did.

As soon as he was describing about picking the book and the breakdown bridge I knew exactly which part he was referring to. Then immediately thought of the lyrics and riff and got goosebumps then they played it. That album was a big part of my teenage years.
This is the most important and beautiful bit of metal music produced in that era. Possibly if all time: That’s how strongly I feel about it. I’ve been listening to it for 22 years and…as I’ve gotten older I’ve found myself in tears every time I hear it and feeling really…I don’t know. It’s just a seriously beautiful moment in time. The delivery. The emotion. The harmonies. The switch in pace. It’s perfect.
Random lyrics are amazing because it's like a proverbial shotgun blast of emotions that several billion people can interpret for themselves. In short, it'll mean something to someone somewhere eventually...

I think we should take this discourse with a grain of salt. He (Rubin) knows exactly word for word what the lyrics are in the bridge, but pretended to not know, pause and push it to Jamie. Secondly it is not random. The lyrics fit with the rest of the lyrics in the song. The chorus contains "self-righteous suicide" referring to the crucifixion and bridge lyrics are words spoken by Christ. Lets not be so gullible guys.

in his defense, my guess, after some deliberation, is that Rick Rubin, being Jewish never read the Bible and never knew the story of Jesus' death and Resurrection . He doesn't even know what a Bible looks like. So to him it was a random book he never read .
Maybe he also got the location mixed up because again, why would he even have a Bible in his library. It was probably at Serj's house or a studio office.

Man if you listen to Chop Suey with some good buds/phones it is INCREDIBLE. Also, I LOVE they didn’t beat match, it’s pretty natural and not computerized like everything else today.
Rick Ruben is an absolute GOD. Dude's vision is insane. He invited one of my friends band over to his place to record and album and he said the things he did to bring out the vocalist's energy/passion and personality were something else

RR is one on a short list of legitimate musical geniuses. To both produce some of the greatest rap albums of all time, while also seeing the broader mainstream appeal of SOAD (what anyone else would have seen as a non-traditional niche band) is impressive as hell.
Rubin literally produced Slayer's Reign In Blood the same here he did Run-DMC - Raising Hell and Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill, so it's not like he didn't have any idea what metal is

Even Joe Rogan can't reply because that part is definitely cool. Also Chop Suey and the Toxicity album is so unique that System of the Down quickly blew up on the metal scene and became a phenomenon in early 2000s. Even years later, the music video is so timeless and still relatable even to this days.

I've been noticing this awesome production those New Metal bands had.
This feeling of a huge wall of sound spanking my ears is so awesome.
Truly shows music transcends the song itself to it's production, that is a art at it's own.
While they have things in common with nu metal bands, System of a Down is in the sphere of thrash metal with Armenian folk music influence. Not being nit picky, but they're their own thing apart from Korn, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, Incubus, etc. Great fking band though, I listened to them back in their hayday and recently getting back into them again and still enjoy them just as much if not more. They somehow have this strange fusion of crazy energy with subdued, melodic hooks that no other band I've heard achieve the same way. Truly iconic and probably not as understood as they should be.

John Dolmayan! He's fantastic, such a great distinct sound. Back, I wanna say some time in the early 2000s he played with the USC Trojan Marching Band, they had an arrangement of SOAD songs and he played on the field with them. I'm not sure if it was just once but I remember it from when I was younger.
@@aaronvanzile3824 I remember seeing a photo of him on stage with his back to the camera and he had this huge floor Tom to the left of his hats. I always thought that was bad ass. Original drummer of Train did the same thing, I found out years later. Both of them are solid ass drummers with a lot of dynamics while being hard hitters and tasteful/creative.

Fun fact: the song was originally supposed to be titled "suicide" but the band was asked to "chop" the title by the record label for something more appropriate. So they utilmately decided to play on that and called the song "Chop Suey".
Chop Suey is a play on Suicide.

I dunno, it seems really too much of a coincidence. that part just flows perfectly well with the chorus lyrically, and it's definitely not a random sentence but a very famous quote. this story sounds cool but is hard to believe.

It's the moment that proves God allowed Christ to make his ultimate sacrifice without help so that Christ"s triumph could be his - much like a parent will allow a child to do something on their own to fully enjoy the sense of accomplishment. In His weakest moment, Christ couldn't see the reason behind God the Father's methods but still trusted in his plan "father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" was his final act of "faith" in and submission to a bigger purpose. He could have called on angels to deliver him but he gave his life so he could triumph over death in front of the whole world. His resurrection gives the hope necessary for our own triumph over what can seem like a hopeless moment(s) of suffering. It says that "no matter how bad this can get, it ends in triumph over this earthly realm; there is something beyond this that is greater". A bigger purpose that "if we trust in the all powerful love of a cosmic parent, we will be ok. We'll always be able to go back home - where love abounds." All that found it's way into the song "Chop Suey" by accident.

@@realitywave He wasn't in "heavan" the whole time (according to the scriptures) but also in hell to bring spirits out of "endless" torment. Call it what you will but millions and millions of people find "salvation" in the philosophy of Christianity and hope it offers. I've found spiritual power in the deepness of the gospel (etymology: good news) and compared to all other theories or philosophies you can't say it's anymore of a fairytale then anything you believe in. Believe what you want but I find hope in an all powerful, all loving creator that sent us into earthly "simulation" to gain cosmic/spiritual power and who's only goal for us is to enjoy life as he does.
That breakdown/outro has given me the chills every time I've ever heard it... the first time I ever heard it was actually on September 11th and it really hit hard that day.

I was wondered if/ when/ how system would be mentioned on JRE one day. And to have Rick Rubin himself talking about it! I heard him mention this story before and the fortuitous nature of how the lyrics landed in the song like that is just mad.
Dude Toxicity is one of the best metal albums of all time. Chop Suey even though it was mainstream is one of my favorites. The outro is amazing. So many good songs on that album. I know bands have to change their sound over time to create something different but I felt Hypnotize and Mesmerize weren’t as good. If you wanna listen to this song slowed its so good.

Toxicity and steal this album were a bit more raw and "out there" whereas hypnotize/mesmerize were a bit more smooth. Love em all. Shame they split. I also love Daron's scars on Broadway . Personally I find serj' solo stuff more boring and unrefined
@@Dieterbe ...They didn't split up. They still tour together in Europe, and are all still friends. Serj has said they don't make new music together because Daron and Serj just aren't on the same page, creatively.

The amount of albums this guy has worked on, I'm surprised he remembers anything at all
I remember being struck by seeing him in the Chili Peppers doc "Funky Monks" listening to Led Zeppelin's "Dazed And Confused" and rocking out to it like he had just heard it for the first time. That always stuck with me, because I'm sure he had heard that song like th erest of us a million times but he still could feel it and be excited by hearing it.
Joe is almost never lost for words yet here they are just blown away at the end
I remember going to a day to remember concert and chop suey played on the PA while the techs were setting up. The whole crowd sang this part of the song and that moment was more memorable than the actual concert
The fact that that book was sitting in Rick Rubin's living room awaiting for Serj Tankian to open it to that very page and that very particular line and then fits more than beautifully and magically in chop suey is a proof that the universe can work fucking magic !
