My husband, age 56, just passed away last week. I watched him fight so hard for so long but eventually, he let go. Oh my Rob....I too, looked for you forever and a day, then I found you....though we shared a mere 12 years, you filled them with so many memories. This song was one of them. As we'd listen, he'd get all teary-eyed and hold my hand. Now that is true love.

I never really "got" this song when it came out. After that, my grandmother passed away from Alzheimers. Now my mother has it and is headed down the same path. This song now means so much more to me, and I cry whenever I hear it because I understand exactly what the couple in the song went through and how the writer felt seeing them decline. This is one of the most powerful, meaningful songs I have ever heard and I am grateful to Kathy Mattea for recording it - her voice, emotion, and phrasing perfectly convey what the song is all about.

My Mom was 32 when she married my Dad. He passed away last year just after their 60th wedding anniversary, and now I am her guardian. She asks me every where my Dad is. Her dementia doesn’t allow her to even realize he is gone.
I used to love this song, but now that I am living it the meaning is more powerful than ever. I pray for the day when Mom will get to see Dad again because I know she will say to him, “Where have you been?”

      Your story made me cry.
God bless you Rick, I've walked that same path. I took care of my dear old step-mom, June, for thirteen years, until she went to be with my Dad again; he was only 60 when he died...I'm now much older than he got to be. I believe they are together again, in harmony.
Coincidentally, that was the name of our farm in Nova Scotia.
Your posting is dated two years ago; it doesn't get any easier does it.

I'm living your story now, Rick. I'm not sure I believe in the traditional form of heaven, but I know my mother-in-law does; she's just scared to go around that last bend, even though she truly believes something better is there, including her husband of 76 1/2 yerars. Peacw to all who mourn.

Mom joined Dad 20 months after his death. I miss them both, but they are reunited in the presence of the Lord. And that, my friend, is also beautiful!

It's common for long married couples to die within a year or two of the firsts death. But they never reunite. The ONLY line of truth in the various fibs foisted on "believers" is the one about " from dust to dust." Religion is the easiest scam to get your money. And control you. Trump is GOD. I saw her on TV once. I'm not normally a country fan but this song is great. She wrote it about her husband's grandparents. The grandma had dementia and the grandpa took care of her. They both got sick and were admitted to the hospital. Grandma stopped eating and speaking and shut down. Grandpa finally got well enough to come visit her on another floor and she woke right up and asked "Where have you been?" True love means taking care of someone when they are old and frail.

I love her singing and her songs. One day I happened to make a service call for the company I worked for in Cross Lanes, WV. I was shocked to see her photos on the wall and the piano. I asked the lady if she was related to Kathy Mattea and she told me that she was Kathy's mom. It was an honor and a pleasure to just talk to her about her daughter, but it got even better when I asked if that was Kathy's piano. She said yes and asked me if I played. "A little" I replied. I could never have asked to play it, so I was blown away when her mom asked me if I'd like to play Kathy's piano. Although I'ver never met Kathy, when I hear her music, I always remember visiting her home and playing her piano.

The BEST Country song ever written. Whitney Houston or any other I don't think can't outdo this in the purest form. Kathy had me in tears watching her on TV as a kid singing this song at the Grammy's. I can still feel this in my heart when I think of a Love Story brought to life in a song.. Thank you Kathy for this gift of LOVE.

She didn't write it actually, it was done by another artist who sang this at The Blue Bird Cafe. It never became a solid hit, until Mattea used it for her single. It's a true story based on the Grandparents of the singer/songwriter (I can't think of his name). It was in Ken Burns' documentary Country Music.

Rosanne, why would you want to take from Dennis a peace he has found in the loss of his dad and most of all his son. Dennis didn't try to tell anyone who was right or wrong, he just directed another Music lover named Linda where she might also find some peace! And correct me if I'm wrong but it is stated as a Bible study. I haven't gone there and I doubt you have either! You are taking a scriptural passage and telling Dennis this is the only way that you can believe. I am sorry you found a need to try to take the peace that Dennis has found, take it away, and tell him the way that he should believe. My comment to you is "how dare you". My Comment to Dennis is "Keep what you found Dennis and hold it dear to your saddened heart". May God hold you and bring you peace. In Jesus's name I pray, Amen

I was just telling my wife about a couple in the obituaries, who both died within couple days of each other, on New Years Day and January 2nd, after being married about 67 years, likely 2 of the casualties from local nursing homes, dying from coronavirus. I asked her if she remembered Kathy's song, of this title, off of cd I still have, about the older couple in the hospital together, but she couldn't recall until Googling it. As soon as it started playing, she recalled it and we teared up, as anyone human would do. I just couldn't help but think of the many seniors who must be in hospitals and nursing homes as couples, together, and possibly not be aware of it. Beautifully done, even though she originally didn't want to record it.

I lived w/ my grandparents in1989. Every morning while getting ready for school the local radio station would play this song. Every morning. At first my grandmother and I found it nice to listen to. By week 2 we had enough.
I moved away the following year but whenever I would see my grandmother she'd recite the lyrics, "Where have you been?..." It became our way of saying I missed you. My grandmother died in 2007 after a long fight with cancer. I play this song when I think of her.

willee51 After hearing Kathy on this song, I somehow feel she is a bit more than "Country"; with the ensemble, she was an "ensemble singer" (I don't know if that's a proper term). She was a "human instrument", a voice that blended in with the viola, the piano, whatever they are called. I am not a studied musician but I know beautiful music when I hear it.

This is practically my paternal grandparents' story. My grandfather was a car salesman. Fanny my grandmother developed Alzheimers Disease in the 80s. Grandpa was diagnosed with Leukemina around that same time. He made the decision to undergo chemotherapy to survive to care for his wife. Unfortunately he lost his battle. At one point they were even in the same hospital in different rooms on different floors as the song says. Everytime I hear this song I think of them. From the moment I heard this song it touched my heart in a very special way.

I first heard this song in 1990 while watching the ACMs on the Armed Forces Radio Television Network. At the time I was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany, we didn't have a lot of access to country music, about an hour once a day on the Armed Forces Radio network was all we got and that was in the middle of the day when I was working. When my wife and I heard it we were stunned. To both of us, it was the most beautiful and well performed song we'd ever heard. To this day I've heard nothing that compares. Years later my wife and I lived this song. My wife's father was stricken with Alzheimer's and my mother with dementia. This song still touches me deeply.
To 485 people who gave this song a thumbs down, you lack empathy and most likely don't have much of a soul. If this song doesn't touch something deep inside you, you're are likely dead inside.

I and my husband both worked for decades in nursing homes - he was a nurse, I was an aide and several other jobs within the nursing homes. My mom died 12 years ago, here at home with us, while in the early stages of Alzheimers. She forgot the names of most of her family, but never forgot my name nor that of my husband. We were her caregivers. Now my husband is my caregiver, as my health is declining much quicker than his.
Glen Campbell recorded a song shortly before he quit performing and subsequently died, not knowing any of his family at the end. The song is piognant and telling, about how Alzheimer robs its victims of their memories. "I Won't Miss You" is the song.
My husband says this song by Kathy Mattea saddens him, as he saw it happen so many times over a career of almost 47 years.

I lost my dad last year....and my 26 year old son, Nathan, in a car wreck 6 months ago. I am so sorry for YOUR loss. Please do what I did...if you are searching for REAL comfort about your dad. Please go to a free website called JW.ORG. At that site you can request a free copy of a bible study aid called "What does the Bible REALLY teach?" They will send it to your door totally free of charge....Or....if you prefer you can just read it for free online. The book takes you right to the bible to answer life's big questions like "Where are the dead?" "Real hope for our dead loved ones." and "Why does GOD allow suffering....among many other topics. I am so glad I did this....I grieve for my dad and my son...but my heart is at peace because I now know what GOD'S word REALLY teaches about where they are and what the future holds for them and virtually EVERYONE who has ever died....and it is an AWESOME hope!!! A hope I NEVER would have found in "christian" churches. My prayer this night is that you and your family find comfort.
