  • Just a condensed run-through of making a cheese, loading the press, and operating the jack. Posted in response to requests to see how I do what I do.

    Hello Alen. Thank you for producing this video. It has inspired me to build my own rig. I used a similar stainless pan salvaged from used restaurant equipment. It's electric over hydraulic and has a cylinder with a 24" stroke. I call it my "Heavy Metal Cider Press" We've actually used it for 5 years now. Not a lot, but it sure is satisficing to run. Thank you for the inspiration. Ed.

      I have a playlist about the evolution of the cider press that you'll want to watch.
      The racks come from a company named Goodnature, as do the press cloths that I use now. This press develops 100psi across the racks, and that's enough to tear all but the strongest rack cloths. I paid more for the Goodnature cloths, but they are much easier to clean, and trap far less juice. Don't get sticker shock; just remember that the racks and cloths are a lifetime investment.

    Looks like a great press. Did you have the stainless tray "made to fit" the HF shop press or was readily available from a retailer?

    • @Neighbour_Al
      @Neighbour_Al  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Hart The tray was custom made for me by an Amish tin smith. Another cider maker had one made for about $400.

      I custom built it around a 20 ton Harbor Freight arbor press. There are earlier videos about the build process and the evolution of the press from a single-bed to a double bed.

    how do you grind your apples? I notice you get a very fine grind.

    • @Neighbour_Al
      @Neighbour_Al  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Zambelli (Italian) Muli-mix grinder. It's a purpose-built fruit grinder that runs on 220VAC. It's the only one that I could find in its price point ($1000)

    do you have an idea what is the press eficiency that you are getting? Pounds of apples to liters of juice?

    • @Neighbour_Al
      @Neighbour_Al  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's difficult to say. First, I've never done the weight to measure comparison. Secondly, different varieties yield different volumes of juice. I can only say that the pressings are merely damp when I dump them from the rack cloths. They give up all the juice.

    • @minded_feel
      @minded_feel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alan Yelvington thank you so much for the response! I was just looking at that compressor and was trying to figure out if it was powerful enough. Called HF and they said it wouldn’t work, so I was a little worried... Grateful that I came across your video and you responded quickly. 🙏🏽

    • @Neighbour_Al
      @Neighbour_Al  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It DOES work, but it will run a lot to keep up with the air demand. Be sure to keep an eye on the oil level or you'll wear it out in no time. I've been using mine for three seasons along with using it for air hammers and my plasma cutter.
