  • Mexico's new president Andrés Manuel López Obrador is promising a radical transformation of his country's policy to tackle the production of illegal drugs.
    The drug war in Mexico claims thousands of lives each year and parts of the country are controlled by notorious drug lords. But the most infamous, known as 'El Chapo', is currently on trial on the US and many other drug kingpins have either been killed or jailed. Has the tide now turned in Mexico's brutal drug war?
    Reality Check investigates.

    The drug cartel problem is more a problem of lawlessness and corruption than anything else. The Mexican government's writ does not run across large parts of Mexico. Even if narcotics were legalized, I don't think that the drug cartels would lose any of their power, given the pervasive corruption and lack of will on the part of the Mexican government.

    • @juliankonkani
      @juliankonkani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jason Kopf The problem is that the people are extremely corrupt and depraved. You can literally get away with cold-blooded murder by bribing the police and having it pinned on an innocent person. The Mexican army is still the strongest force in the area. The government has literally abandoned large swathes of land to the cartels. The drug cartels are powerful only because they are in bed with the government. This War on Drugs is a sham. Both the government and the drug cartels are on the same side. My cynical mind tells me that it's all a show to appease the American government and bilk billions of dollars in aid from the American taxpayer.

It's the only way, when the Mexican population and youth see cartel buildings smoldering in fire and cartel gunmen dead all over the street, they would rethink the lifestyle. It is not about mafia or cartels, it always been about the same reason as in else insurgencies. It is about a fundational political will which differs from the US , the drugs cartels, the use of immigration, rural administrations away from the state surveillance, demographic displacements etc are all elements that have been used by that political will.. And they already had a war in northern Mexico only just a few years ago.
    LO is carrying on with policies that he does not really agrees with neither having any political will about them to succeed but he´s been entrusted to implement them so he must to carry on, that is why he as being as being a bit sarcastic or ironic in his speaking. It never gets easy about the idea of refounding the rural administrations in Mexico with fresh new political citizens in those territories and with enough resources to get the actual state infraestructure of Mexico to fully reach for those areas specially when Mexico has a social tradition that keeps their own concept of nationalism. Actually this is one of the reason why those type of wars are so hard to achieve an ever lasting successful rate.
