  • Malnutrition is a problem among older people, particularly those in nursing homes and can lead to slower wound-healing, higher rates of infection and pressure ulcer development. Among the causes of inadequate food intake are ‘feeding problems’, difficulty transferring food from plate to mouth and swallowing it. Residents may need to be fed individually. Some may also have difficulty swallowing.
In this video, Lisa demonstrates the proper technique for feeding a resident who cannot feed herself.

In California study guide we put the resident in fowler position and not sitting on side of the bed. Because the resident will be very uncomfortable sitting on side of the bed, especially after eating, she'll just feel sleepy and lie down....hehe. Also the volume is very low on this video, but thanks.

Hi Sandra! The option here is high fowlers or the edge of the bed. It's more of a testing strategy to make sure there isn't any question about the head of the bed being high enough.
Thank you for the volume feedback, I will look into this.

I thought the resident had to verify their name?

Why would you provide privacy? Eating is supposed to be a social event. Also, if the client is unable to feed themselves wouldn't it be a better idea to raise the head of the bed and place the tray in front of them? You can sit to the side of the bed and still face them.

Yes that is true, though some patients might not want to be seen while eating as this might be uncomfortable for them and cause them to lose their appetite.
