The test is much harder than when I got my license 30+ years ago. Maybe a little easier now without Parallel parking, but it really is difficult for a nervous young person. Recommend you go to the MVA and watch the skills test portion of the test. People back over the cones all of the time. They have trouble getting around the tight turn after they come out of the area you back into. My daughter drives great and has for two years. The skills test has proven to be a real challenge for her.

But it also depends on who you get as an instructor, my test is coming up and I'm just go in there with confidence and do my best. Hoping I do not mess up.....because i hate the mva lolol
I honestly don't have faith in the MD MVA road test process. It appears that some of their examiners are either poorly trained or will rather see you fail for a reason that just makes no sense. I know someone that failed for not stopping hard enough at a stop sign. She actually said that you have to actually feel the stop instead of gradually reducing speed until coming to a complete stop. Some stations are better than others though. There are some that are a no go for me. Some people drive well by themselves but get very nervous when taking the test and a provision should be made for that.
Henry Rosenberg A complete stop was not the issue. She actually said it wasn't hard enough. A smooth stop did not go down well with him. I can do a complete stop at a stop sign without the passenger even noticing it.

Make sure you're not missing a lug nut from your wheels. Not sure what that has to do with whether or not the tester can stop at a stop sign or parallel park, but just make sure.
It seems like they are getting more strict every year honestly. First off I don't know why they put the road test on here the instructors have recently gotten people into accidents with their bad judgement, like the guy under me explained they have a 2 month waiting period usually its not that long unless its during the hot season's when high school kids wanna get their license just before or after graduation so they can have it for college, and lastly to make matters worst you gotta deal wit the instructors attitudes ,better hope they arent stressed from working that day because they will take it out on your test

I feel the Linnel driving school didnt prepare me well enough for this skills test. When we did 3 point and 2 point turns we always did them in drive ways. but on the test you have to back in between cones the width and space of a parking space. I tapped one cone and failed. now I know what to practice!!
Hopefully, I pass on my second time taking the test this weekend. I also hope that the instructor that I get is a little more lenient. I only failed the first time because I did a rolling stop. It was irritating because I was only on the practice course. He could have let me slide on that tbh.
I had the same impression. I suppose the MVA would wanna show one of their friendlier faces (if he's even a real examiner and not just an actor). 😏 But I imagine they really do have a wide mix of personalities, as with any other group of people. That's why it's wrong to generalize.

i got disqualified from taking the test yesterday cus my mom left the car right when he told me to pull forward to the inspection area. i literally drove 7 feet forward and i got disqualified.
I took it for the first time a few months ago and my examiner unreasonably failed me. Literally at the first stop sign I made a complete stop and he said “go right” so I turned right (completely proper w signal etc)… he said PULL OVER and then starts yelling at me and says “I said GO right not TURN right” ummm you need to be concise with directions, like what does “go right” even mean if not turning but stopped at a 4-way stop… Wish I could remember his name, it was the White Oak location. If I get him again I’m locking him out of my car and waiting for the next examiner lmao seems like he just failed me for fun
sorry that happened, clear directions are super important to know how to give for instructors, that sucks hope you passed later on your second or third go :( going to try for my first test soon but not at white oak, hope I get someone clear not sure if youll see this but can you describe what you did for the closed section of the test to pass? im most nervous about that, scared I will forget when to signal

well the instructor told me to make sure i get my car in between the 2 cones for the reverse parking, i misunderstood him so i just parked my car literally in the middle of the 2 cones on the road, not the parking lot which means I didn't go far enough up to back into the space. I was also very nervous, forgot about signaling and finally i ended up hitting one of the cones :\ good luck on yours! sorry if this is late?

I remember how nervous I was in Drivers Ed. classes and the test, and it's all coming back as an adult who has to take the tests again due to an expired license. :-/
if you fail your first time, you can go again the next day (or the soonest you're available). If you fail it the second time, you have to wait at least a week before you reschedule.
I have failed my driving test a thousand times because MVA didnt provided me a test driving official that speak in my own language since i am hard of hearing i cant pass it with an official that just speak english or with a helper that is seatedon my back.. i am really frustrated with that situation, i cant afford to continue paying someone else that is gonna be seated on my back to guide me throhout the driving test when is it not doing any help, just causing more stress while trying my driving test :(, any help MVA please?

Legit Passed this 1st try, too easy. i know today (5/18/15) was the last day that the parallel park is required. tomorrow 5/19 the parallel park isnt required but you have less points to start with...
For the parking part of the test, if you back in and are too close to a cone on 1 side or the other, can you pull forward to straighten out, and then back in and still pass as long as it is done in less than 3 minutes?

Me and my sister took it at the same time off Clopper road for our learners and I passed it on the first try without studying or taking the HS driver Ed class my sister failed it (2 times) and she study and took the HS Driver class. This was a written test with a No.2 pencil. Now for the driving test a year later sister failed it 3 times. I past it on the first try while it was snowing really bad (around 1/16” on the ground). Then I got my M licenses shortly after. I remember for the learners I got the Alcohol questions wrong. Everything else was common sense. The one at Beltsville I cursed out my youngest sister driver instructor. She was going to fail my sister because my vehicle was heavy modified. I told her your not a cop why don’t you go get a real education so you can become a real cop and give me a ticket.

It was pretty laid back. Maybe because my instructor was laid back. They will take you behind PGCC and thats it. I would recommend you pick a early time, like at 8:30 because its less crowded.
I'm taking my test next week November 18th! I am using my mom's Grand Cherokee jeep, and the windshield wipers world fine but the wiper fluid system won't work! Will I fail test if the wiper fluid system doesn't work?

Emily Murphy Hi Emily - we had a very positive experience in Glen Burnie. (MUCH less positive in Westminster) I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't much matter where you go... it's all in the luck of the draw of the examiner you get. My best advice is to go the day before and just drive all around the area around the MVA so you're familiar with the lights, turn lanes, turning into and out of the MVA, etc. Definitely be aware of the speed limits and where they change (and be able to tell the examiner what the speed limit is if asked), be aware of the road signs and what they mean. Are you taking yours in Glen Burnie?

Emily Murphy It was my daughter, actually, who was taking her test... also for the second time. She was super nervous, too. Here's one tip... when you're sitting in the lane where they queue you up to start the test, there's a stop sign ahead of you. It's kind of in a weird position as you're turning the corner to drive up to where the examiner gets in the car. MAKE SURE YOU STOP! After the examiner gets in the car, just as you're about to start the course, there's a yield sign. MAKE SURE YOU YIELD... let the examiner see that you're looking around for other cars before you proceed. Right away you'll do the two point turn and get that over with. Then you'll go out on Ritchie Hwy and drive around some neighborhood streets. Then you'll come back to the MVA and pull into the parking lot. The whole thing took no more than 15 minutes. I'll ask my daughter if she remembers any signs they asked her about.

__ for essex, you make a right turn into to coarse, you make a left, then you do the 2 point turn(back into the parking spot.) After you make a few more right turns to leave the in coarse test. Then you go on the road for about 10-15 minutes or so. I passed on the first try. I got some points deducted because on 1 stretch of road the speed limit is 30, and i went 40. Other than that God bless 👍
I'm probably too late, but make sure you use your mirrors for the 2 point turn. I had an angry black guy that I guess was just having a bad day, so he failed me for being inches over the white line at an intersection. I'm not sure if that's an automatic failure or what

start perpendicular to parking space. Idk I used judgement to do the reverse. U have 3 min and that's a lot of time so u can always restart if u mess up
+Shauna Goldman Passed! Was nervous as hell and a close one. The guy told me he had failed 9/11 of the people he tested. So I was part of 25% to pass through him. Just be confident, drive through fredrick before the test and learn the area a bit. That'll help a lot

PermanentlyPregnant No he is not. Some of the rules makes very little sense in real life. Even the examiners don't follow rules like using two hands on the steering at all times in real time driving.
This video was fantastically unhelpful and talked more about other aspects of getting your license than the actual road test.

You do realize that it is illegal to roll through a stop sign, right? You have to come to a complete stop for three seconds.

I turned right once and the tester yelled “WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!” all of my confidence just fucking dipped.

I got the requisite first 22 correct within 4 minutes. It's mostly common sense questions that you should be able to answer in your sleep.

Haley, I know this is off-topic but I'm watching your adoption story and I find it sweet and _heartbreaking._ 💔 I'm about 8 minutes in so far. I wish I could say I know you or someone you know, but unfortunately I don't. Since it was posted a year or so ago, I'm wondering how you're doing in your search, and in general. Me and my sister took it at the same time off Clopper road for our learners and I passed it on the first try without studying or taking the HS driver Ed class my sister failed it (2 times) and she study and took the HS Driver class. This was a written test with a No.2 pencil. Now for the driving test a year later sister failed it 3 times. I past it on the first try while it was snowing really bad (around 1/16” on the ground). Then I got my M licenses shortly after.
I remember for the learners I got the Alcohol questions wrong. Everything else was common sense.
The one at Beltsville I cursed out my youngest sister driver instructor. She was going to fail my sister because my vehicle was heavy modified. I told her your not a cop why don’t you go get a real education so you can become a real cop and give me a ticket.
i think it's funny and cool that you lashed out at someone who was trying to do their job because they wouldn't make an exception to a reasonable requirement for someone they didn't know! i bet you are hilarious at restaurants with overworked waitstaff and when trying to return something to a retail store without a receipt :)

Has anyone taken their behind the wheel test in Largo, if so, how strict are the instructors? Also what are the procedure on pursuing the three point turns?

It was pretty laid back. Maybe because my instructor was laid back. They will take you behind PGCC and thats it. I would recommend you pick a early time, like at 8:30 because its less crowded.

I'm taking my test next week November 18th! I am using my mom's Grand Cherokee jeep, and the windshield wipers world fine but the wiper fluid system won't work! Will I fail test if the wiper fluid system doesn't work?

Went to Waldorf my first time and failed because I stopped INCHES over the white line at an intersection. I take my test again in 4 days at St. Mary's. Anyone have tips or anything?

For the reverse parking , can you start backing up then put your car in drive and pull forward and then straighten out your car and back up into the cones or do you have to just go straight back in reverse until your in the cones ? PLEASE ANSWER

ok , so i am confused i called a driving school they said i needed this permit before but in order to get the permit i have to already have a car n practiced with it? whats the point of the school then if i need to practice before even getting to the school
+Sycogenesis hopefully by now you've got your answer. if not, from what i've heard is that you get a permit before even getting the driving test. you must be officially trained how to drive in an academy... idk much as i'm just going to get my permit tomorrow

Did you get it, I just took mine June 16th & I found the Essex MVA testing sight to be rather easy. ( I passed of course. )

Emily Murphy Hi Emily - we had a very positive experience in Glen Burnie. (MUCH less positive in Westminster) I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't much matter where you go... it's all in the luck of the draw of the examiner you get. My best advice is to go the day before and just drive all around the area around the MVA so you're familiar with the lights, turn lanes, turning into and out of the MVA, etc. Definitely be aware of the speed limits and where they change (and be able to tell the examiner what the speed limit is if asked), be aware of the road signs and what they mean. Are you taking yours in Glen Burnie?

I've been watching this video over and over as I don't think I have time today to drive up and practice the course. I have failed once before at Easton earlier this year due to a wrong lane change at the end of the test and do not want to make the same mistake as last time going into senior year. How was your instructor? Do u remember the road signs he or she asked you? Was the reverse two point turn about pretty good/did the instructor help you and give you tips? How long did the test take overall? When u finished the driving prt do u pull back into the PRKING lot into another spot or do they make u practice parking pulling in w comes? Sorry for all these questions I'm just very nervous aha
Emily Murphy It was my daughter, actually, who was taking her test... also for the second time. She was super nervous, too. Here's one tip... when you're sitting in the lane where they queue you up to start the test, there's a stop sign ahead of you. It's kind of in a weird position as you're turning the corner to drive up to where the examiner gets in the car. MAKE SURE YOU STOP! After the examiner gets in the car, just as you're about to start the course, there's a yield sign. MAKE SURE YOU YIELD... let the examiner see that you're looking around for other cars before you proceed. Right away you'll do the two point turn and get that over with. Then you'll go out on Ritchie Hwy and drive around some neighborhood streets. Then you'll come back to the MVA and pull into the parking lot. The whole thing took no more than 15 minutes. I'll ask my daughter if she remembers any signs they asked her about.

__ for essex, you make a right turn into to coarse, you make a left, then you do the 2 point turn(back into the parking spot.) After you make a few more right turns to leave the in coarse test. Then you go on the road for about 10-15 minutes or so. I passed on the first try. I got some points deducted because on 1 stretch of road the speed limit is 30, and i went 40. Other than that God bless 👍

I'm probably too late, but make sure you use your mirrors for the 2 point turn. I had an angry black guy that I guess was just having a bad day, so he failed me for being inches over the white line at an intersection. I'm not sure if that's an automatic failure or what

start perpendicular to parking space. Idk I used judgement to do the reverse. U have 3 min and that's a lot of time so u can always restart if u mess up

You need take lots of notes, underline the key points. Make sure check book twice, sometimes hidden text might be on the test.

+Shauna Goldman Passed! Was nervous as hell and a close one. The guy told me he had failed 9/11 of the people he tested. So I was part of 25% to pass through him. Just be confident, drive through fredrick before the test and learn the area a bit. That'll help a lot
Congrats! My test is tomorrow! Those roads around the mva are extremely tricky looking, I've never been on them...eek but I guess I better worry about doing that 2 point turn first!
