    I used to be a SV Delos fan, however they have become really boring with their "project" I like the simplicity of what you are trying to achieve. A great little boat and i enjoy your your videos more than the big partying attitude others portray. Stay safe and keep it going. Really informative.
    Thanks.

      I agree completely... ever since the three ladies came on board Delos it seems like full time silliness and partying. You might also enjoy Free Range Sailing... very similar to our favourite Frenchman.

      couldn't agree more..I also tuned off Delos and Vagabonde, either all about partying/beers in hand all time or sponsorships . Check out RAN sailing, very organic, lots of actual sailing/trouble shooting plus stopover excursions, cool chill Swede couple and Follow the Boat is also a good one , UK couple, older but lots of sailing/exploring, humorous and lots of refit/maintenance etc

    Hi buddy, love your work! One piece of advise: Check the speaker installation, if they're not installed with a proper panel / box behind them they can become quite dangerous. In case a big wave crashes in the cockpit, the membranes rip out and the speakers become essentially big gaping holes.

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Wow, never though about this, but yeah, I'll have a look into it, building a box behind shouldn't be too complicated . Thanks :)

    A silly thought for you. Get a large flexible hose (wide) and couple it to your snorkel (you can get a cheap plastic fitting with a screw clamp) and then lock the topside of the hose to a couple of feet above the waterline. You can now do some SNUBA and spend time under the bottom of the boat doing repairs (like resetting the propeller and doing zincs and the like).

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, I though about this. Someone told me also that with this system it's important to blow the air outside the snorkel, and not inside, otherwise you end up breathing the same CO2 hehe

      @@TheSailingFrenchman Oui, il faut un tuba avec sortie d'air à membrane (le plus souvent en bas, face à la bouche, ce qui permet également d'évacuer, eaux de condensation, salive, etc...), sinon, un petit compresseur de gonflage 12V avec un détendeur....

  • @artsmith103
    @artsmith103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2 tips: Paint your shower bucket black and it will get quite warm. There is plastic black spray paint, no primer needed.
    When you coil your halyards, don't wrap the knot over the top, just tuck them between the mast and taught halyard. You will be able to drop a sail faster if necessary.
    Brilliant you have the storm jib. Really helpful to keep the nose up in heavy weather. I used one on my 21footer in 40 knots and it was great! Reduce sail early :-)

  • @pentachronic

    Lovely boat. I had a Catalina 27 which is a similar size. Damn it could turn on a dime and had incredible handling. Love your configuration. One thing that the Catalina had was shelves under the windows with slide doors. This was great as it gave you extra strorage without stuff flying about. It also covered the wiring looms. Maybe your next woodwork project ?? 😋

  • @caenydd
    @caenydd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wow! What an amazing progress from the beginning. The detailed reconstruction of the boat and then within weeks ocean sailing. The culmination ( I have not seen all the movies) is around Lanzarote with the tour of the boat. What’s amazing is your stamina. You have brought us amazing drone footage, quite moving commentaries of times that have been very difficult, and with this confidence and acceptance of all that the sea throws at you. Inspirational! Obviously, and amazingly, you always knew you would be able to do this. You knew the boat would be up to the task in braving these huge seas. And what inspires me and perhaps many subscribers is your confidence, your very natural and informative videos together with your highly engaging style. We are following you and wishing you every success and thanks for enriching our lives.

  • @emilybh6255
    @emilybh6255 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video! I love how you've brought all the lines back to the cockpit and explained how your auto-pilot works. It seems like you outfitted your boat with all the
    important tools you see in bigger boats so that everything you need is close by without being cramped. To make an analogy with cooking, it is how a chef might design
    a compact kitchen with all the important tools close by yet still providing ample space for cooking and preparing food with no wasted space - except for the lack of enough headroom.. I hope while at anchor, the hatch opens far enough so you can stand while cooking as long as the hatch is open. Otherwise I'd want some way to be able to sit or kneel while cooking. Having to bend my neck would get old quickly.
    Have you seen "How to sail oceans"? Like yours, videos from that channel show the owner solo sailing his 30 footer. He has vast experience making ocean passages on his boat. He does it the old fashioned way. In fact his boat has no engine. Watching him maneuver his boat in close quarters in harbors with boats all around under sail or using a sculling oar is a treat.

      @@IrregularPineapples It’s a standard mast foot of a windsurf mast. Pretty robust, cheap and very useful. The exact term may be different but I am sure you will find it. I am sailing for over 2 years with this construction, no signs of fatigue. They are supposed to hold way more powers anyway…

    Sooner or later you will develop neck and back injuries by having to bend over like you do. I can tell you having a curved spine that is now causing my neck to clasp rendering me disabled and in pain is not what you want. Best to up grade as soon as able for your well being. I admire your courage to get out and sail. Thank you for taking us along.

    Grear tour. I encountered this channel casually when vieweing other sailing video. On the related vids there was one like "crossing the Atlantic on a 26ft boat", and, hey, I had to look at that. Then, hooked, LOL.
    I started also to see SV Delos from chapter 1, only 8 viewed so far, I still didn' reach the "party point". But Sailing Frenchman is nice indeed
    I also saw several chapters from Erik Aandera channel on the North Atlantic, quite focused, I like them too, much more than Delos. As I have limited time to watch "TV" (TH-cam is almost the only TV I watch), I centered on Sailing French, Erik Aandera, and a bit of Patrik Laine (more from him later... oh, days should have 30 hours...).
    I think Delos is now at the rear of the train at this moment

    Fine ship sir. Well thought out. Recommend a vhf with GPS and AIS. Eg standard horizon 2200e. Less than £300, and might help you sleep better on passage. Fair winds

      It’s a Van de Stadt 34, designed in the late 80’s. Cedar core / fibreglass sandwich construction, going to take about 5 years I think.

    I am very interested in how you are launching and recovering your drone. I'm a sailor who flies drones as a separate hobby. I have a 15' daysailer and have been trying to figure out how to take pictures of myself and my boat while sailing. Major props for figuring this out!

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it's all about risking it... and a good insurance. I just take off and land the drone with one hand, from the leeward side of the boat. I attach some floats to my iron so I can recover it. I have an insurance that covers anything since I don't lose it completely. It's a lots of adrenaline but its fun. I haven't crashed it so far (fingers crossed)

    Just for comfort I think I would be happier with a 32 foot or so. Hans Christian if I had a choice but your boat does well. Your photography is brilliant. Bon courage mon vieux.

    Love your lifestyle and sense of freedom. It is really amazing what you can fit into a small space and how you can simplify your life of you have to when chasing your dreams. BTW I have a Mavic and its awsome bit of kit as you know. Looking forward to more videos. You should get a handheld gimbal for filming too as it will make the footage easier to watch. Personally I get a bit nauseous when the camera jumps about too much. Stay safe and enjoy every minute of your adventures. Thanks for taking us with you.

      yeah, I thought about a handheld gimbal, but it makes the whole setting much more complicated and fragile. I like the go pro session because I can just grab it and film, doesn't mater if there is water splashes...etc. But if you know about an affordable and simple waterproof gimbal, I'm interested to hear about it!

    G'day Qld Australia.
    I am upgrading my boat to an 26 ft sailing boat, As i am on my owen and have an disability, i think an 26 ft boat will be big enough for me, as i will have head room an mini bathroom and an large v berth with a gully will be ideal.

    Bonne route à toi ! J'ai navigué et habité pendant un an sur un Ecume de Mer, c'est un très bon bateau, marin et facile à manoeuvrer ! Je suis sûr qu'il te mènera où tu veux en toute sécu ! D'ailleurs on fait la même route, on se croisera surement au détour d'un mouillage où je reconnaîtrai facilement ton bateau !!! ^^ Bon vent !

    Ou parle Creole? Great video! This boat is very similar to the Offshore 8M built in the UK which is based on the lines of the Van de Stadt Bries from Holland. I have a Bries but it is a restoration project so it is great to see what you have done with yours. My boat is named Erzulie. The demanding lover of Agwe and Dambala whom you may be familiar with. Mesi!

      My creole is almost inexistent now :( but the name of the boat remained :). Erzulie does rings a bell indeed. Good luck in your restoration project!

    Salut j'ai adoré ta présentation du bateau. Incroyable tout ce qui rentre dans ce 8 mètre moi j'ai un 8 mètre mais je crois pas que la moitié de ce que tu as rentrerais dedans. Il faut dire que l'Ecume de Mer à une cabine nettement plus haute que la mienne, et ça change tout niveau place à l'intérieur. Bref super vidéo, ça fait du bien de voir que tout le monde peut réaliser ses rêves, même avec un "petit" budget. Comment est le dicton : on ne connait pas de marins qui restent à quai... Salut et bon vent ! Régale-nous bien de tes récits de voyages.

    A fantastic series of films of the realities of single handed sailing and congratulations on the restoration of your boat. She looks fabulous.
    As the mast is stepped on the deck did you check the fibre glass was solid when you were refitting the boat i.e. no flex or saturation of the biscuit/wood layer inside? Maybe I missed it but I don't think so. Bigger boats the mast goes down through the cabin to the floor. In your refit videos you didn't mention the deck save for painting the foredeck with anti-slip paint. Most was on restoration of the external hull. Did you have to replace any of the bulk heads as again you didn't show. Also I am guessing you must have renewed all the sea cocks?
    Ps I have an Achilles 24 which is a similar very pretty capable boat with safe long distance cruising like the EdM.
    Fair and warm tail winds to you.

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a lot mate.
      The deck under the mast was in good condition, so haven't touched it, but you're right, it's a common problem on those boats.
      Regarding the deck, I've been sanding everything before painting everything again, undercoat, finish paint, and then anti slip paint.
      No bulk head replaces, al were in good conditions. And yeah, I indeed replaced all the seacocks
