I made a dragonborn monk with blue ancestry, took the Dragon Hide feat from Xanathar's guide so he can mix up blunt damage with slashing. He has spines on his back that light up when he's charging his breath weapon, and the DM gave the party a ring that grants underwater move speed equal to your movement speed as well as water breathing. He was supposed to be a Godzilla tribute, and I think it worked out pretty well. Also, I want to make a party of dragonborn that are bards or have the entertainer background. Party name can be Dragonforce.

I think in the very first D&D manual, or in an article about it, Gary Gygax said to let your players play dragons if they want as long as they start out as level 1 dragons. The youngest dragons are not even all that powerful and take a long time to mature so I don't see the problem with it in 5E either.
I have a back up character that's half Barbarian and half Blood Hunter. All ice themed Dragonborn. My blood is ice, my breath is ice and my rage is ice. Pretty cool if you ask me 🤣👉👉
I've had two players choose Dragonborn so far. The first was a Ranger, the other was a Barbarian. Since then, I've adapted the 4e rules quite easily for the Dragonborn. There have been a lot of real life issues which have prevented me from DM-ing as well as kind people who are DM-ing for me. But I'll be back at the helm soon and hopefully someone will take a "new" Dragonborn.
Mine was born of tiamat and bahamut's magics and cast out and made into a "lesser form". DM allowed me to keep my wings and tail and the 750lb weight with the caveat that couldnt fly till it was unlocked, and I couldnt ride a horse and carriages were bogged down. He was allowed to run at the speed of a horse during travel and my druid ended up riding me in cat form like some terrifying cat cavalry.
The Dragonborn Zealot Barbarian in my campaign is a beast. On top of being a monster in combat I love his role playing the savage, bloodlust of a Red Dragon while trying to stay on the straight and narrow as a worshipper of Bahamut.
I got a few Dragonborn characters. One monk Two Paladins (one good the other evil) One sorcerer One fighter(with it being a homebrew dragonborn race of a platinum dragonborn) And one bard(the bard college I picked was also a homebrew called College of Rock) Most of the homebrew stuff I got from D&D Beyond

I have 2 Dragonborn characters. One is a LG Silver Dragonborn Oath of Conquest/Hexblade who fights for Tyr and reconquering his rightful domain by terrorizing the enemies and smashing them with his force of personality, total blast to RP. The other one is a CG Gold Dragonborn Lore Bard who's a coward and uses CC and his Spiritual Weapon fights for him since lvl6, hillarious to RP him.
I have an idea for a LG Gold Dragonborn Oath of Conquest Paladin who serves a Sun Deity. He believes everything the light touches is his god's kingdom.

I'm playing a Dragonborn Oathbreaker/Hexblade! Obviously DM depended with the Oathbreaker subclass but the synergy is unreal, I would say maybe even over-powered 💪
in our games the Banneret was given a buff by the GM. so their abilities worked better if you had a high charisma. so, that's what my dragonborn character was. acid breath weapon was her heritage. the actual rules on the home-brew buff will be below a read more. back story wise she was a low ranking member of a sell sword company, but led a small clutch of warriors. inspiring troops to hold the line and fight fiercely. . . . . . Rallying Cry: the allies gain HP equal to your fighter level+your Charisma modifier. Royal Envoy: no change. good as it is. Inspiring Surge: the target(s) gains a bonus to the attack equal to your Charisma modifier. Bulwark: your target gains a bonus to the saving throw re-roll equal to your Charisma modifier.
one of my players is a barbarian dragonborn, recently turned zealot because of... death related things... but there is also a fighter/bard dragonborn NPC hanging around.

I'm currently playing the taboo combination of barb/sorc with my dragonborn. 1 lvl of sorc for range and diversity of play. We're basically just starting out so we've only acquired 2200 xp so far. But, honestly at least at these low levels, this combo is really fun.
Lore wise, at least in the Forgotten Realms setting, it's actually very uncommon for Dragonborn to be Clerics, Paladins, and Warlocks (and probably Druids as well) due to the fact that the Abeir, the world the came from didn't have any gods, and on Abeir, they were the Dragons' slaves. Therefore, they don't have a religious tradition, and especially they'd not likely choose to serve draconic gods. After all, why would these people, who fight hard and won their freedom, willingly submit to something in the image of those that had enslaved them for many thousands of years? The same logic goes for the Warlock: Dragonborn prefer succeed on their own merits, and not have to rely on some outside source to become strong. Of course, in your homebrew setting, you're free to rewrite the lore as you see fit. Also, I'd love to see what you think are the best classes to use when playing a Kobold.
I play a Silver Dragonborn raised in an orphanage, entered the militia, and tasked with protecting a temple to Bahamut. In this campaign, i'm currently a 3rd battlemaster, 8th Solidarity domain cleric. We just finished a story arc in Amonkhet, my cleric learned a thing or two from Oketra first hand..
See I was thinking more like a Dragonborn Barbarian. Going Storm Herald from XGTE and playing heavily into a theme with the some aura you chose meshing well with your draconic heritage. You said druid though and all I can think is wildshaping into like a spider or fly or something and using my breath weapon.
I love Dragonborn have been playing since 1e and around 2 edition introduced a cures ring that transformed players into a Dragonborn like lycanthrope which transformed players into basically 1/2 dragons altered their alignment n have them bonuses and flaws all dragon flavored n a whole quest to cure their affliction by the end of the campaign 1/2 the players didn’t want to be cured lol

I have a Black Dragonborn Fighter Soldier class named Vahgo Mourthane and he is a Tank for the group. He’s lawful Good so he butts heads with one of the party members who is all about the “if it’s valuable and not tied down then it’s theirs” mentality lol. It definitely keeps things interesting because my character is about 8ft tall while the thief is about 4ft tall and even though there is friction between the two at times, they still tend to play off each other through so many encounters throughout our sessions.
Terrific video. I think of Dragonborn and Lizardfolk and Yuan-ti as being like the platypus in that they are all mixtures of reptiles and mammals so it makes sense if they have the features of both. I've been as guilty of optimizing race choices as anyone since my only Dragonborn is a paladin but I suspect a Dragonborn rogue or whatever would be just as much fun to play.
I'm new to D&D and I made a dragonborn character who's a barbarian and so far I'm pretty satisfied with how it's going. I'm just not too sure if my dragonborn should have a silver or white draconic ancestry... but everything else with the character building is going pretty smoothly, thanks to some help from discord servers and TH-cam videos like this so thank you! 😁😁
I'm playing my first character, a black dragonborn fighter 1 / warlock X, pact of the blade (fiend). He's brilliant, heavy armour, scary pact weapon, fun fun fun ☺️
In my friend's upcoming campaign, I play as a Red Dragonborn War Cleric, which honestly surprised my teammates. I then told them what Kriv (my Dragonborn's name) is meant to do, "Keep his friends alive and beat the snot out of anyone who harms him or his friends." It's that simple. And having a warhammer and a greatclub is really going to help hammer (pun intended) in how he deals with his foes: bashing their brains in.
Dragonborne actually first appeared in 2nd edition in the Dragonlance campaign setting (they were called Draconians in the setting). My first 5e character was a Dragonborne Paladin blacksmith carrying a maul he made and spent in game downtime silvering and later enchanting. My latest Dragonborne is a double Dragon build, silver Dragonborne dragonblood sorcerer.
Draconians where different and much cooler. I don't care what the side bar says. They had wings and for the longest time were only male until the release of the Doom Brigade series. Which was a fun read. Nerdarchist Dave
Im just getting back into D&D after 30 years with my daughter & her friends. She picked a Dragonborn Sorcerer & I as the DM(Im the only one that played before so Im DMing for my first time) & I don’t care what they choose to play because Im a good & creative writer but putting my these new races characters together is quite a challenge. I had her pick a different race for now until I catch up on my ignorance of how gar the game has come from the 1st & 2nd editions. Yeah, its been a hot minute. Any advice? We’re having a blast none the less.
In our current campaign, I am playing an Eldritch Fighter red Dragonborn. The spells chosen are mostly for helping control the battlefield or assist in combat in some manner rather than attack spells. Two weapon fighting style. Dual Wielder, War Caster and Great Weapon Master who can also cast shield while fighting makes him a difficult opponent to fight.
My group for an upcoming Avernus game have decided to roll as the God Squad - so far we have as part of that a Half Orc Cleric, his younger brother who thinks he's one but is just a Celestial Warlock, and my Dragonborn Paladin of Conquest. Of Tiamat. Checked that one witb the DM first. Plan to make him, with the party, a very jovial guy, so long as the don't try to stab him in the back. He's a brutal, conquering type... but his party aren't minions. They're allies. They might even become friends. Sorta a demi-clan, he can't exactly rely on many knights of Tiamat being around
I rolled up an Dragonborn Eldritch Knight as a rival for my campaigns Oath of Vengeance Paladin. It was an incredible battle, having the spell slots to tank up to the level of the paladin and bypass their heavy armor with a breath attack.

I think Dragonborn were created by Dragons taking humanoid form and having offspring with them so it would make sense that they have the physical features of both.
I played a Silver Dragonborn fighter/champion in my campaign and used my breath weapon almost every chance I get. So much so that my DM home brewed a feat where I roll my breath weapon like I roll ability scores. I now have Effective Breath weapon where I roll an extra dice for my Ice breath and drop the lowest Die. I really appreciated it! ^u^
Despite all the hate of exhaustion rules, the most fun barbarian i have ever played was a dragonborn berserker. Something about cutting down multiple enemies with my greatsword and then roasting a group that swarmed me right after. It was always a blast.
Our DM homebrewed a feat for the Dragonborn in our party to make his breath weapon more viable. Increased the damage, allowed him to replace one of his attacks (Barbarian) with the breath, and made it recharge on 7-8 on a d8.
I have a guy playing a Dragonborn Barbarian in one of the campaigns I'm in. It's been a blast. He grappled one guy, and while had him held, opted to use his breath weapon. Getting hit with that outside of the body is bad. Having your jaw grappled and forced open, then having a breath weapon used on the inside is pretty brutal.
Great episode as always. I feel Dragonborn as the fruit grown from that seed planted by Gygax himself in OD&D when he talked about accomodating your players. If you recall, and this just a paraphrase, if somebody wants to play a dragon, let them. Just find a form of a dragon that fits normal character progression.
Well half Dragons in a way were a Gygax invention and Dragonborn evolved from the idea of the half dragon. So they definitely are fruit grown from the seeds that he planted.
so two 2 dragonborn characters in pretty drastically different paths: i got the DMs approval to play an Amethyst Dragonborn barbarian (a reflavored totem that i cherry picked different animals and call it the path of the Dragon.and yes...my level 3 is Bear). and my second character is a red Dragonborn (Draconic Bloodline: red) and 4 elements monk split. with the Dragon Hide feat, unarmed attacks are also considered weapon attacks, so so i use fangs of the fire snake, and with the next attack i use green-flame blade, (the distance you can do this combo changes as you level up, depending on feats and metamagic). that's like his signature attack. also i got permission for the dragon wings feat so i dont have to use sorcery points for anything else.
I'm actually going to be playing my Dragonborn, Eldritch Knight Fighter later today. A while back I did some major modifications on the 5e Dragonborn for the campaign that I am running (for one of the player characters). The DM that runs the campaign with my Dragonborn, who happens to be a player in the one I run, allowed me to use my customized Dragonborn. "At 6th level, your dragon breath deals 3d6 damage and becomes a bonus action. At 11th level, your dragon breath deals 4d6 damage and becomes a recharge. Roll 2d6 at the beginning of your turn. If you roll two 6's, then your breath weapon recharges. You must be conscious in order to make this recharge roll. Out of combat, your breath weapon recharges after 10 minutes, rather than a short or long rest. At 16th level, your dragon breath deals 5d6 damage. Additionally, your dragon breath increases to a 5 by 60 ft. line or 20 ft. cone. Darkvision. Your draconic ancestry gives you superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of gray. Tough Hide. You gain a +1 bonus to AC regardless of if you are wearing armour." My entire D&D group unanimously agreed that Dragonborns were the weakest of the 5th edition PHB races, which is why I chose to buff them up.
My house rules for db if you wanna try it out... Breath Weapon: bonus action from lvl 1, increase the die to a d8, and can be used a number of times equal to your con modifier per short or long rest Blindsight out to a radius of 10 ft Gain a +1 to your AC Proficiency with the Perception skill
One of my best games was when I played a silver dragon who had transformed to human (with excellent stats) but had hit his head and developed amnesia. It was fantastic.
One of my characters is a Blue Dragonborn Cleric of the Tempest Dormain preaching Zeus. Electricity and the Sky is his speciality with a bit of healing. Despite him being a Cleric, he isn’t really fond of healing others if there isn’t a incentive for him. He is open to slavery and is racist towards Halflings and Dwarfs. He doesn’t see any value in any of the short races. A prideful confident man where the people see him as a saviour, but deep down he is a dark and twisted person.
It would be interesting to see what kind of society views someone like that as a savior. While things like slavery and racism certainly existed in many ancient societies in our world which considered themselves to be lawful and good, they didn't take the extreme forms that we are most familiar with from more modern times. Slaves often had rights and could buy their freedom without too much difficulty and former ones could become leading members of society as could even the most exotic of foreigners.
Tosh Omni more or less what I was going for, yeah :) but I think I forgot to mention that those who call him a saviour are mostly unaware if his misdeeds, and my Cleric’s high charisma often hides his true intentions. When I play this character, only my teammates know how evil my character truly is, but when walking into towns, he acts generous and benevolent because it’s always good to be on the good side of a town you could exploit.
You mentioned sorcerer, but not any specific subclasses. There's the obvious Draconic Bloodline for flavor reasons, but it's... not actually great mechanically (unless you choose two different ancestries, but that would be weird). Both Phoenix and Stone would be good options. Phoenix can give extra damage on your breath weapon if you pick Brass, Gold, or Red, and you eventually get to fly like an actual dragon. Stone Sorcerer is *the* martial sorcerer subclass, with bonus weapon proficiencies, increased hp, AC, and smites in your spell list, so you get to use your strength bonus for something. Honorable mention to Storm Sorcery giving you a couple bonus resistances.
Valor Bard and Paladin are probably the big two. A bit unorthodox, but a Str Rogue, Swashbuckler, perhaps multiclassed, would also be fun as an aesthetic
Paladin is an easy call. A lot of people do that from what I've seen. Charisma, Strength Focus is useful, can wear Heavy Armor and dump dex if you want... gives Paladin a range attack and makes them a bit tankier with a resistance. I think for a lot of the same reasons though that Barbarian works very well and it isn't something I see as much, which tends to make things more fun. The Charisma isn't super useful, but Charisma is also a trait that's generally considered pretty handy. Plus, hey, Intimidate uses it, and that's a Barbarian's bread and butter. If you let Int and Wis be your two weakest stats then you can have a really fit and charismatic dragon person showing off their scales, breathing death, and adding an elemental resistance to their rage resistances. The only thing that doesn't really stack with is the lowest level of Bear Totem Barbarian. Imagine the ancestral guardians of that guy showing up on the field or the cool elemental theming for a Storm Herald.

Bronze Dragonborn Paladin, Oath of Devotion, and managed to pick up some extra feats due to going to training grounds and some pretty crazy and brutal quests. He’s like an M1 Abrams that can heal people.
I jumped into a campaign at level 10, and made a DragonBorn Bard based around Grappling. And In the last boss fight I got to do what I had always wanted to do, I grappled and Pinned a Huge Dragon by using Enlarge on myself :D
Barbarian. +2 to strength, take the Dragon hide feat at 4 for the bonus to AC (or just pump your dex and con lol) and hey, who doesn't love a charismatic barbarian XD
Their inferiority comes up occasionally my simple go to fix is to upgrade resistance to immunity: Makes sense that you're not affected by what your body naturally makes that comes out of your throat and/or sinuses without damaging you. This balances within the race as the 'better' (rarer) the Breath Weapon damage type the worse the immunity and so this rewards, currently unpopular, "common" energy (dragon) types creating equity and more variety .. Gold should not be depressingly unpopular. Also balances between other races, many get resistance (Tiefling/Dwarf/Stout Halflings etc), but also get so SO so much more and have an easier time blending in. This grants a level of uniqueness to an otherwise sadly ordinary race.
I wrote down a silver Dragonborn monk who's a Clint Eastwood refer. I put my dump stat of 8 into strength, so I came up as his backstory as him being a runt

Fun facts: -A Dragborns scale color had nothing to do with their breath weapon. You could have a rusty brown dragonborn that breathes ice -Most dragonborn HATE bahamut and tiamat, and the very few who worship then get exiled -A dragonborn will never ask for help unless it needs it, in which it won't be afraid to. They're a very respectful race that only want to be respected in return -While dragonborn are very charismatic, they will often give a hard "no" to a task they know they could not do. A dragonborns word is one of the strongest promises you can get
I'm currently playing a circle of the land dragonborn druid. While +2 STR and +1 CHA doesn't synergize super well with a druid, it let me use both of those as dump stats and still keep a relatively well-rounded character. The main benefit is the breath weapon (I went with lightning) because it fits really well with the story niche I've built as sort of a "storm druid" who uses the weather and the elements in fights.
Start Storm Sorcerer, go for 6+ levels. Tempest Cleric for 6-7 levels. Plenty of utility and social spells. Most importantly, lightning and thunder spells. Call Lightning, Storm Sphere, Lightning Bolt, Chromatic Orb, Shatter and twinned Lightning Lure. Oh yeah. Chain Lightning. Best battlefield control outside of Eldritch Blast and bard spells. Call Lightning every round, while outside, then quicken a 1st lvl or higher spell. Storm Sphere for indoors. The channel divinity of tempest cleric can maximize damage on Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning, twice a short rest at lvl6+ I made a bronze guy named Vaarl Arkite. Name is influenced by Dark Souls wyverns and Darkbeast Paar
I am currently playing a copper scaled nature cleric that worships a ancient copper dragon. And since nature clerics gain a druid cantrip I chose "Primal Savagery" a melee cantrip that deals acid damage. So this heavy armor brute of a character breathe lines of acid along with his acidic bite attacks. Its by no stretch a optimised build but its theme is clear and have been quite fun to play thus far. I have also gotten the observant feat to play up the apex predator feel of him in an attempt to match the true dragons blindsight (To my gm's horror I might add.)
ya know I didn't like the dragon breasts at first either, but then I saw some nice fan art and I thought "you know maybe this deserves a second chance". That being said the dragonborn is one of those races that I feel was created specifically to pay a certain class. In this case, it's a paladin. There aren't very many races in the game where I can say it was built for one class, but there are a handful and most come from the phb. I feel like every race there is optimized with one class in mind, with the exception of humans and half-elves.
My first character ever built was a 5e Dragonborn Ranger. I barely knew anything about the game though so I put Dex as my highest stat, then I got Dual Wielder and bolstered Str to twin up effectively Warhammers, but the Archery fighting style. Like I said, first character ever, so cut me some slack

what I tend to do is tell my players to pick whatever color they want because the bloodlines are so muttled that a white dragon born could spit acid

I think in the very first D&D manual, or in an article about it, Gary Gygax said to let your players play dragons if they want as long as they start out as level 1 dragons. The youngest dragons are not even all that powerful and take a long time to mature so I don't see the problem with it in 5E either.

I've had two players choose Dragonborn so far. The first was a Ranger, the other was a Barbarian.
Since then, I've adapted the 4e rules quite easily for the Dragonborn.
There have been a lot of real life issues which have prevented me from DM-ing as well as kind people who are DM-ing for me. But I'll be back at the helm soon and hopefully someone will take a "new" Dragonborn.
I made a draconic bloodline sorcerer so my scales could apply AC. Was looking forward to getting wings.
Mine was born of tiamat and bahamut's magics and cast out and made into a "lesser form". DM allowed me to keep my wings and tail and the 750lb weight with the caveat that couldnt fly till it was unlocked, and I couldnt ride a horse and carriages were bogged down. He was allowed to run at the speed of a horse during travel and my druid ended up riding me in cat form like some terrifying cat cavalry.
The Dragonborn Zealot Barbarian in my campaign is a beast. On top of being a monster in combat I love his role playing the savage, bloodlust of a Red Dragon while trying to stay on the straight and narrow as a worshipper of Bahamut.
That is exactly what I have! But instead of red, I'm doing bronze for 5e. Being a zealot Barbarian is such a great tank.
I got a few Dragonborn characters. One monk
Two Paladins (one good the other evil)
One sorcerer
One fighter(with it being a homebrew dragonborn race of a platinum dragonborn)
And one bard(the bard college I picked was also a homebrew called College of Rock)

Dragonborns are perhaps my favorite d&d race. i think paladin or sorcerer is my favorite class for them.
I like them thematically, but they get shorted mechanically compared most other races.

My wife plays a Dragonborn fighter in our group's game. She really enjoys the idea of being this beefed up dragon who kicks ass.
Draconians (or dragonmen) were introduced in 2E Dragonlance which are the predecessors to Dragonborn.
I consider them separate and not the same. Also way cooler.

I have 2 Dragonborn characters. One is a LG Silver Dragonborn Oath of Conquest/Hexblade who fights for Tyr and reconquering his rightful domain by terrorizing the enemies and smashing them with his force of personality, total blast to RP. The other one is a CG Gold Dragonborn Lore Bard who's a coward and uses CC and his Spiritual Weapon fights for him since lvl6, hillarious to RP him.
I have an idea for a LG Gold Dragonborn Oath of Conquest Paladin who serves a Sun Deity. He believes everything the light touches is his god's kingdom.

I'm playing a Dragonborn Oathbreaker/Hexblade! Obviously DM depended with the Oathbreaker subclass but the synergy is unreal, I would say maybe even over-powered 💪

in our games the Banneret was given a buff by the GM. so their abilities worked better if you had a high charisma. so, that's what my dragonborn character was. acid breath weapon was her heritage. the actual rules on the home-brew buff will be below a read more. back story wise she was a low ranking member of a sell sword company, but led a small clutch of warriors. inspiring troops to hold the line and fight fiercely.

My first long term D&D 5e character was a Green Dragonborn Berserker Barbarian.
I'm currently playing the taboo combination of barb/sorc with my dragonborn. 1 lvl of sorc for range and diversity of play. We're basically just starting out so we've only acquired 2200 xp so far. But, honestly at least at these low levels, this combo is really fun.
Lore wise, at least in the Forgotten Realms setting, it's actually very uncommon for Dragonborn to be Clerics, Paladins, and Warlocks (and probably Druids as well) due to the fact that the Abeir, the world the came from didn't have any gods, and on Abeir, they were the Dragons' slaves. Therefore, they don't have a religious tradition, and especially they'd not likely choose to serve draconic gods. After all, why would these people, who fight hard and won their freedom, willingly submit to something in the image of those that had enslaved them for many thousands of years? The same logic goes for the Warlock: Dragonborn prefer succeed on their own merits, and not have to rely on some outside source to become strong.
Of course, in your homebrew setting, you're free to rewrite the lore as you see fit.
Also, I'd love to see what you think are the best classes to use when playing a Kobold.
We will definitely get around to kobolds.

See, the real answer is any class you choose. But if you wanna make a really strong character then follow this guide.
I play a Silver Dragonborn raised in an orphanage, entered the militia, and tasked with protecting a temple to Bahamut. In this campaign, i'm currently a 3rd battlemaster, 8th Solidarity domain cleric. We just finished a story arc in Amonkhet, my cleric learned a thing or two from Oketra first hand..
See I was thinking more like a Dragonborn Barbarian. Going Storm Herald from XGTE and playing heavily into a theme with the some aura you chose meshing well with your draconic heritage.
You said druid though and all I can think is wildshaping into like a spider or fly or something and using my breath weapon.

I love Dragonborn have been playing since 1e and around 2 edition introduced a cures ring that transformed players into a Dragonborn like lycanthrope which transformed players into basically 1/2 dragons altered their alignment n have them bonuses and flaws all dragon flavored n a whole quest to cure their affliction by the end of the campaign 1/2 the players didn’t want to be cured lol
Have you guys done what class should you play for Firbolg, Triton, or Tortle yet? Because if really like to see those.

When I got into DnD Dragonborn was my first class and I'm still fairly new. I currently am going Fighter Barbarian.
I have a Black Dragonborn Fighter Soldier class named Vahgo Mourthane and he is a Tank for the group. He’s lawful Good so he butts heads with one of the party members who is all about the “if it’s valuable and not tied down then it’s theirs” mentality lol. It definitely keeps things interesting because my character is about 8ft tall while the thief is about 4ft tall and even though there is friction between the two at times, they still tend to play off each other through so many encounters throughout our sessions.
Terrific video. I think of Dragonborn and Lizardfolk and Yuan-ti as being like the platypus in that they are all mixtures of reptiles and mammals so it makes sense if they have the features of both. I've been as guilty of optimizing race choices as anyone since my only Dragonborn is a paladin but I suspect a Dragonborn rogue or whatever would be just as much fun to play.
I'm new to D&D and I made a dragonborn character who's a barbarian and so far I'm pretty satisfied with how it's going. I'm just not too sure if my dragonborn should have a silver or white draconic ancestry... but everything else with the character building is going pretty smoothly, thanks to some help from discord servers and TH-cam videos like this so thank you! 😁😁

In my friend's upcoming campaign, I play as a Red Dragonborn War Cleric, which honestly surprised my teammates. I then told them what Kriv (my Dragonborn's name) is meant to do, "Keep his friends alive and beat the snot out of anyone who harms him or his friends." It's that simple. And having a warhammer and a greatclub is really going to help hammer (pun intended) in how he deals with his foes: bashing their brains in.

Dragonborne actually first appeared in 2nd edition in the Dragonlance campaign setting (they were called Draconians in the setting).
My first 5e character was a Dragonborne Paladin blacksmith carrying a maul he made and spent in game downtime silvering and later enchanting.
My latest Dragonborne is a double Dragon build, silver Dragonborne dragonblood sorcerer.
Draconians where different and much cooler. I don't care what the side bar says. They had wings and for the longest time were only male until the release of the Doom Brigade series. Which was a fun read.

Im just getting back into D&D after 30 years with my daughter & her friends. She picked a Dragonborn Sorcerer & I as the DM(Im the only one that played before so Im DMing for my first time) & I don’t care what they choose to play because Im a good & creative writer but putting my these new races characters together is quite a challenge. I had her pick a different race for now until I catch up on my ignorance of how gar the game has come from the 1st & 2nd editions. Yeah, its been a hot minute.
Any advice? We’re having a blast none the less.
In our current campaign, I am playing an Eldritch Fighter red Dragonborn. The spells chosen are mostly for helping control the battlefield or assist in combat in some manner rather than attack spells. Two weapon fighting style. Dual Wielder, War Caster and Great Weapon Master who can also cast shield while fighting makes him a difficult opponent to fight.
My group for an upcoming Avernus game have decided to roll as the God Squad - so far we have as part of that a Half Orc Cleric, his younger brother who thinks he's one but is just a Celestial Warlock, and my Dragonborn Paladin of Conquest.
Of Tiamat. Checked that one witb the DM first. Plan to make him, with the party, a very jovial guy, so long as the don't try to stab him in the back. He's a brutal, conquering type... but his party aren't minions. They're allies. They might even become friends. Sorta a demi-clan, he can't exactly rely on many knights of Tiamat being around
I rolled up an Dragonborn Eldritch Knight as a rival for my campaigns Oath of Vengeance Paladin. It was an incredible battle, having the spell slots to tank up to the level of the paladin and bypass their heavy armor with a breath attack.

I think Dragonborn were created by Dragons taking humanoid form and having offspring with them so it would make sense that they have the physical features of both.

I played a Silver Dragonborn fighter/champion in my campaign and used my breath weapon almost every chance I get. So much so that my DM home brewed a feat where I roll my breath weapon like I roll ability scores. I now have Effective Breath weapon where I roll an extra dice for my Ice breath and drop the lowest Die. I really appreciated it! ^u^
Despite all the hate of exhaustion rules, the most fun barbarian i have ever played was a dragonborn berserker. Something about cutting down multiple enemies with my greatsword and then roasting a group that swarmed me right after. It was always a blast.
Draconic Sorcerer seems to go well with Dragonborn.

Our DM homebrewed a feat for the Dragonborn in our party to make his breath weapon more viable. Increased the damage, allowed him to replace one of his attacks (Barbarian) with the breath, and made it recharge on 7-8 on a d8.
I have a guy playing a Dragonborn Barbarian in one of the campaigns I'm in. It's been a blast. He grappled one guy, and while had him held, opted to use his breath weapon. Getting hit with that outside of the body is bad. Having your jaw grappled and forced open, then having a breath weapon used on the inside is pretty brutal.
Great episode as always. I feel Dragonborn as the fruit grown from that seed planted by Gygax himself in OD&D when he talked about accomodating your players.
If you recall, and this just a paraphrase, if somebody wants to play a dragon, let them. Just find a form of a dragon that fits normal character progression.
Well half Dragons in a way were a Gygax invention and Dragonborn evolved from the idea of the half dragon. So they definitely are fruit grown from the seeds that he planted.
so two 2 dragonborn characters in pretty drastically different paths: i got the DMs approval to play an Amethyst Dragonborn barbarian (a reflavored totem that i cherry picked different animals and call it the path of the Dragon.and yes...my level 3 is Bear). and my second character is a red Dragonborn (Draconic Bloodline: red) and 4 elements monk split. with the Dragon Hide feat, unarmed attacks are also considered weapon attacks, so so i use fangs of the fire snake, and with the next attack i use green-flame blade, (the distance you can do this combo changes as you level up, depending on feats and metamagic). that's like his signature attack. also i got permission for the dragon wings feat so i dont have to use sorcery points for anything else.
I'm actually going to be playing my Dragonborn, Eldritch Knight Fighter later today.
A while back I did some major modifications on the 5e Dragonborn for the campaign that I am running (for one of the player characters). The DM that runs the campaign with my Dragonborn, who happens to be a player in the one I run, allowed me to use my customized Dragonborn.
"At 6th level, your dragon breath deals 3d6 damage and becomes a bonus action.
At 11th level, your dragon breath deals 4d6 damage and becomes a recharge. Roll 2d6 at the beginning of your turn. If you roll two 6's, then your breath weapon recharges. You must be conscious in order to make this recharge roll. Out of combat, your breath weapon recharges after 10 minutes, rather than a short or long rest.
At 16th level, your dragon breath deals 5d6 damage. Additionally, your dragon breath increases to a 5 by 60 ft. line or 20 ft. cone.
Darkvision. Your draconic ancestry gives you superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of gray.
Tough Hide. You gain a +1 bonus to AC regardless of if you are wearing armour."
My entire D&D group unanimously agreed that Dragonborns were the weakest of the 5th edition PHB races, which is why I chose to buff them up.

Breath Weapon: bonus action from lvl 1, increase the die to a d8, and can be used a number of times equal to your con modifier per short or long rest
Blindsight out to a radius of 10 ft
Gain a +1 to your AC

I’m just now getting into dnd and looking forward to playing my first game as a black Dragonborn barbarian just need to find people to play with
One of my best games was when I played a silver dragon who had transformed to human (with excellent stats) but had hit his head and developed amnesia. It was fantastic.
One of my characters is a Blue Dragonborn Cleric of the Tempest Dormain preaching Zeus. Electricity and the Sky is his speciality with a bit of healing. Despite him being a Cleric, he isn’t really fond of healing others if there isn’t a incentive for him. He is open to slavery and is racist towards Halflings and Dwarfs. He doesn’t see any value in any of the short races. A prideful confident man where the people see him as a saviour, but deep down he is a dark and twisted person.
It would be interesting to see what kind of society views someone like that as a savior. While things like slavery and racism certainly existed in many ancient societies in our world which considered themselves to be lawful and good, they didn't take the extreme forms that we are most familiar with from more modern times. Slaves often had rights and could buy their freedom without too much difficulty and former ones could become leading members of society as could even the most exotic of foreigners.
Tosh Omni more or less what I was going for, yeah :) but I think I forgot to mention that those who call him a saviour are mostly unaware if his misdeeds, and my Cleric’s high charisma often hides his true intentions.
When I play this character, only my teammates know how evil my character truly is, but when walking into towns, he acts generous and benevolent because it’s always good to be on the good side of a town you could exploit.
You mentioned sorcerer, but not any specific subclasses. There's the obvious Draconic Bloodline for flavor reasons, but it's... not actually great mechanically (unless you choose two different ancestries, but that would be weird). Both Phoenix and Stone would be good options. Phoenix can give extra damage on your breath weapon if you pick Brass, Gold, or Red, and you eventually get to fly like an actual dragon. Stone Sorcerer is *the* martial sorcerer subclass, with bonus weapon proficiencies, increased hp, AC, and smites in your spell list, so you get to use your strength bonus for something. Honorable mention to Storm Sorcery giving you a couple bonus resistances.
Valor Bard and Paladin are probably the big two. A bit unorthodox, but a Str Rogue, Swashbuckler, perhaps multiclassed, would also be fun as an aesthetic
Paladin is an easy call. A lot of people do that from what I've seen. Charisma, Strength Focus is useful, can wear Heavy Armor and dump dex if you want... gives Paladin a range attack and makes them a bit tankier with a resistance.
I think for a lot of the same reasons though that Barbarian works very well and it isn't something I see as much, which tends to make things more fun. The Charisma isn't super useful, but Charisma is also a trait that's generally considered pretty handy. Plus, hey, Intimidate uses it, and that's a Barbarian's bread and butter. If you let Int and Wis be your two weakest stats then you can have a really fit and charismatic dragon person showing off their scales, breathing death, and adding an elemental resistance to their rage resistances. The only thing that doesn't really stack with is the lowest level of Bear Totem Barbarian.
Imagine the ancestral guardians of that guy showing up on the field or the cool elemental theming for a Storm Herald.
I'm playing a dragonborn, Yarjirart Grimmbolt, a fighter class champion, adding some feats can be really good in melé . Just returning to play lol; greetings from Patagonia, Chile!
Bronze Dragonborn Paladin, Oath of Devotion, and managed to pick up some extra feats due to going to training grounds and some pretty crazy and brutal quests.
He’s like an M1 Abrams that can heal people.
I jumped into a campaign at level 10, and made a DragonBorn Bard based around Grappling. And In the last boss fight I got to do what I had always wanted to do, I grappled and Pinned a Huge Dragon by using Enlarge on myself :D
Barbarian. +2 to strength, take the Dragon hide feat at 4 for the bonus to AC (or just pump your dex and con lol) and hey, who doesn't love a charismatic barbarian XD
Their inferiority comes up occasionally my simple go to fix is to upgrade resistance to immunity:
Makes sense that you're not affected by what your body naturally makes that comes out of your throat and/or sinuses without damaging you.
This balances within the race as the 'better' (rarer) the Breath Weapon damage type the worse the immunity and so this rewards, currently unpopular, "common" energy (dragon) types creating equity and more variety .. Gold should not be depressingly unpopular.
Also balances between other races, many get resistance (Tiefling/Dwarf/Stout Halflings etc), but also get so SO so much more and have an easier time blending in. This grants a level of uniqueness to an otherwise sadly ordinary race.
I wrote down a silver Dragonborn monk who's a Clint Eastwood refer. I put my dump stat of 8 into strength, so I came up as his backstory as him being a runt

Black Dragonborn monk (way of the open hand) that is short to the verge of becoming a small size creature. No build... just really cool class.
Fun facts:
-A Dragborns scale color had nothing to do with their breath weapon. You could have a rusty brown dragonborn that breathes ice
-Most dragonborn HATE bahamut and tiamat, and the very few who worship then get exiled
-A dragonborn will never ask for help unless it needs it, in which it won't be afraid to. They're a very respectful race that only want to be respected in return
-While dragonborn are very charismatic, they will often give a hard "no" to a task they know they could not do. A dragonborns word is one of the strongest promises you can get
I'm currently playing a circle of the land dragonborn druid. While +2 STR and +1 CHA doesn't synergize super well with a druid, it let me use both of those as dump stats and still keep a relatively well-rounded character. The main benefit is the breath weapon (I went with lightning) because it fits really well with the story niche I've built as sort of a "storm druid" who uses the weather and the elements in fights.

Start Storm Sorcerer, go for 6+ levels. Tempest Cleric for 6-7 levels. Plenty of utility and social spells. Most importantly, lightning and thunder spells. Call Lightning, Storm Sphere, Lightning Bolt, Chromatic Orb, Shatter and twinned Lightning Lure. Oh yeah. Chain Lightning. Best battlefield control outside of Eldritch Blast and bard spells. Call Lightning every round, while outside, then quicken a 1st lvl or higher spell. Storm Sphere for indoors. The channel divinity of tempest cleric can maximize damage on Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning, twice a short rest at lvl6+
I made a bronze guy named Vaarl Arkite. Name is influenced by Dark Souls wyverns and Darkbeast Paar
Light Blue Dragonborn with Lightning breathe, she was a Fighter with like +20 Strength.

I am currently playing a copper scaled nature cleric that worships a ancient copper dragon. And since nature clerics gain a druid cantrip I chose "Primal Savagery" a melee cantrip that deals acid damage. So this heavy armor brute of a character breathe lines of acid along with his acidic bite attacks.
Its by no stretch a optimised build but its theme is clear and have been quite fun to play thus far.
I have also gotten the observant feat to play up the apex predator feel of him in an attempt to match the true dragons blindsight (To my gm's horror I might add.)
I just straight up house rule that they have a 10 ft blindsight

ya know I didn't like the dragon breasts at first either, but then I saw some nice fan art and I thought "you know maybe this deserves a second chance". That being said the dragonborn is one of those races that I feel was created specifically to pay a certain class. In this case, it's a paladin. There aren't very many races in the game where I can say it was built for one class, but there are a handful and most come from the phb. I feel like every race there is optimized with one class in mind, with the exception of humans and half-elves.
Well considering that they were created by Bahamut, I'd be willing to safely guess as to why that is
Dragonborn Sorcerer. I basically am the smaller version of a dragon, with Wings, very powerful flame sorcery and above average size.

My first character ever built was a 5e Dragonborn Ranger. I barely knew anything about the game though so I put Dex as my highest stat, then I got Dual Wielder and bolstered Str to twin up effectively Warhammers, but the Archery fighting style. Like I said, first character ever, so cut me some slack

Conquest Paladin Dragonborn! Add in the Dragonborn racial feat Dragon Fear from XGTE and you are a monster on the battlefield.
That would be a super amazing combo.
