    Quick advice from a technician, try not to shut it off by the on/off switch. Just unplug the cable then turn off the fuel feeder so it starves and it will shut off in less than a minute. This case you don’t end up having gas inside the engine and trust me your generator will last a lot longer. Change your oil every 50hrs and If you buy it brand new make sure you run it for couple of hours to get rid of the metal shreds inside the engine.

      100% - most bad reviews generators receive is from people letting fuel sit in the carb (and/or tank) for a long time... and then they're surprised it doesn't start after it's gummed up with old fuel. I will typically drain the tank & run it dry after use if I'm planning on storing it 'indefinitely'.

      Nice of you to say! From other viewers I have learned that putting the generator directly on dirt can be a real issue as the air intake is underneath so be sure to put it on a solid surface with no dirt underneath.

    Cool little generator. I have 2 firman generators and hell I might as well Buy another one for a family member or friend that doesn't have one for an emergency. I'm kind of a prepper and friends think I'm paranoid because I truly believe the grid and Kroger won't last forever LOL.

    I'm a newbie to generators/inverters, do you use a surge protector or a special extension cord? I can't quite see what it is you have plugged in...thanks

    • @socaldad6850
      @socaldad6850  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do own a purposed surge protector that I use for my RV but I do not use it with my gennie. The power strip I use in the video does have a basic surge protection built in it where it will trip sort of like a GFI socket to protect the electronics. I believe that is sufficient but others here may have more experience.

    Don't worry about the fumes in the garage.

  • @feng443
    @feng443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a dual fuel generator for home backup and I really like it. If I get an inverter generator it will also be dual fuel. Propane run quieter, cleaner and also run longer without re-fueling. Besides, gasoline with ethanol cause all the problems with carburetor, even with fuel stabilizer. The only time I will go with a gas only version is when propane is not easy to carry and the generator is for daily use. Most use case of the generator are for occasional use thus flexibility of duel fuel outweighs the little extra cost.

    Newbie here, anyone know about how long will one of these beauties run a space heater, a fridge, a big freezer and an electric blanket?

    • @N6EAJ
      @N6EAJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The fridge, freezer, and electric blanket are no problem. The small electric heater I have draws about 800W on low power and near 1500W on high power. On high, the heater would use most of the capacity of this generator. All of them may work together if you kept the space heater on low. Hard to say for sure. As others have mentioned in these comment, this generator (Firman W01682) goes on sale at Costco on 3/10/2021 for $350. Of course always run it outside. As for how long, this generator advertises 9 hours on a full 0.9 gallon tank. If running near full power capacity, you might only want to assume 5 or 6 hours.

      @@socaldad6850 I just bought this myself and it is well built for the price. Though, I would have never thought of buying anything other than a Honda or Yamaha, this one for the price was hard to resist temptation. Will use it as a toy in the worst case(Have some electric powered lawn stuff that I can use this with).
      So my experience with this has been initially it was loud... did a second oil change in an hour and the oil was black just a little which is normal. Ran it with second oil change for 5 hours and the noise went down (Oil SuperTECH 10W-30 synthetic). Finally did the third oil change and ran out of 10W-30 and found a bottle of Eneos 5W-30 I had left over from previous use. Mixed a little liqui moly MOS2 and man it runs so quite I can hardly know it is running. Huge difference between the first run!
      The one gripe I have about this is the regular outlet (the one higher) orientation is not correct as per the illustration in the unit. My ground pin is oriented to the right rather than down. So I can't plug in a Watt meter as the other RV outlet is in the way because of the way it is oriented. Talked to Firman and they say some generators it is oriented on the left and some on the right but not down. They noted down the issue and said they will check into the orientation as part of their QC. Not a big deal I can use an extension. But would have been nice for it to be there like the illustration(ground pin down).

    I wanted to buy this one thru Costco. I won’t. I think they are louder then Wen I have. Wen is 51 Db. If they say this one is 54 Db, that’s 3 Db over, which makes it louder. Quiet generators are the ones with 6-7 Db over ambient Db (44 Db avg) in ECO MODE and 12-14 Db on full RPM with about 1500 watt load. Honda is the quietest of them all. I will wait for that Costco Yamaha engine one to be on sale. Little bit quieter.
