  • Around 20,000 foreign fighters are believed to have joined Ukraine's Foreign Legion to fight Russia. Among the stories of combat, accounts have emerged of volunteers leaving traumatized and disillusioned. Foreign fighters have said units lack organization and equipment, and some volunteers have dubious motives.

Many of US ex military guys are looking for meaning and purpose. Our own countries are being destroyed by corrupt politicians but instead of organizing locally, correcting our own communities some are directing this energy on behalf of corrupt regimes half a world away. Solving our problems at home are much more difficult in some ways but far more important

It is true he has some years of fighting in some wars but he has not fought in a war against a modern military like Russia. The Taliban and the insurgents in Iraq didn't have planes and helicopters taking you out verses we as a modern military had all of that and used it on their rag tag forces. All of those men who went to Ukraine must have been craving action just not the big action Russia used on them. A lot of volunteers who went to Ukraine were killed in the war and Ukraine does not pay to have their remains sent back to their home country so that money has to come from volunteers in the USA and those other countries. Another bad thing for these guys if captured by the Russians is they are not recognized as POW's under the Geneva Convention the same way the US didn't recognized the Taliban. In Ukraine you don't have the support to save your butts like air and artillery fire and the medical service is lacking until you make it to one of their big hospitals. It is so hard to train and change the Ukrainian militaries way of fighting and that is the big reason why thousands of their troops are killed every month. Guys like this man are different than i am Ukraine could not pay me a high wage to join in their fight against the Russians. The Russians are winning and defeating Ukrainian forces in a fast pace now. Unless NATO does a stupid move and steps into fight the Russians this war and fighting will be over in less than a year from now. Every one find you a news source that does not lie about how the Ukrainian's are defeating the Russians none of that is true. All those F-16's will not help Ukraine much because they have no support to protect the F-16's from being shot out of the sky. All those worthless sanctions hardly made a dent in the Russian economy. I don't support Russia in this war against a weaker Ukraine never ever. There is a lot that we don't know because of keeping it a secret from public. I have some news sources from both sides of this war that i rely on to find out the truth of how the war is really going. I have not watched any of the West and main stream media news in over a year because of their one sided agenda i find to be pure false reporting. This here is how i see things from my point of view and i get very little of it wrong. We all have opinions and that's ok whether we are right from wrong

Hey Willie, I am a graduate historian that has done a number of oral history interviews with veterans in the United States. They ranged from World War II to the war on terror. This was a phenomenal interview and an excellent insight into the life of a foreign legion soldier. this is a beautiful primary source and I would love to see more of these interviews from all sorts of different perspectives.
You handle these interviews very well. unlike other channels that interview people during this conflict, you do not interrupt your subjects which I find extremely refreshing. you ask the questions and they tell the story. The job of an interviewer is to listen more than to talk. That is why I find your interviews so engaging. It’s their story first and foremost.
I had to rack my brain while watching to find a whole lot to critique. Perhaps allowing soldiers to explain their stories in chronological order rather than simply a list of questions and perhaps a better mic for yourself might be my only thoughts. But all of these questions were phenomenal and the answers were excellent. Great work as always.

I understand how kids see combat "like CoD" because their exposure to how wars work is curated by entertainment, for entertainment, and it serves to keep enlistment up and faith in the US Armed Forces high.
They have seen war movies where men survive unrealistically and they're taught that if you are a super slick highly skilled operator, you will be infinitely more likely to stay alive. Same in the games they play and that's their only exposure to war - of course they don't understand it, no more than I understand how farms operate because I am not a farmer.
They see that in, pretty much, any piece of entertainment they engage in that involves main characters who are involved in the military, the good guys with the greatest skill survive.
We have games now like "Verdun" and "Hell Let Loose" which demonstrate a lot more of the tension, the bleakness, and the general waste of life that war has been across WW1 and WW2 specifically:

American influence is not needed in the Russian sphere of influence, in all seriousness NATO should leave. Would you like it if Russia came back to Cuba or had serious influence in Canada? No, you wouldn’t (as I am assuming you might be from the U.S) Kennedy asked the Russians to leave Cuba to avoid nuclear war and with this agreement and peace talks, the Russians left. Unlike the U.S and NATO who disregard peace talks with the Russians (set forth by the Russians to prevent this war) So, @esposesposa5999 is correct on this one. The NATO alliance and the U.S are warmongers. They want this war to make money and kill Ukrainian men, women and children so that the lives of U.S men, women and children are not lost. These interviews are gold and will become even more valuable as time goes on not many people are doing them. something that occurred to me while listening to this is around the question soldiers get 'why are you here'. The implication behind this question is that there needs to be some sort of special higher purpose which of course can be the case but I think the general public need to recognize and respect that this is their profession it would be like asking a firefighter why they go to fight fires.

    • @WarPicturesEntertainment
      @WarPicturesEntertainment 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The only difference is that an american firefighter will not go to Ukraine to extinguish a fire. In my personal opinion (maybe I am totally wrong) many of the foreign fighters (especially those who fought in Iraq and Syria) are kind of addicted to the war and like to be there. It gives them a meaning to their life, something that they cannot achieve in civilian life. Maybe I am wrong, but I think many of these guys are in Ukraine, because they are viewing it as adventurous. But when they realized that they aren't fighting some cigarrete sellers with AK47s, and that this war is mainly won by artillery, a lot of them left.

Being a grunt with relatively little (going by his mis-understanding russian helicopter defenses) technical knowledge he might think not seeing russian planes could be "holding back".
Its more that they are controlled by air defense. Both sides have far better anti-air than the other side has air assets, which means neither side can really penetrate enemy airspace at anything but ridiculous cost. So they don't.

certainly calm and collected, but born for this? Or scarred for life? I wonder if he is just as peaceful when he sleeps and are unable to control his thoughts and dreams.

@@spiff1003 it's not the war he thought it was nor the people he thought they are...these vets are being lead to the slaughter by their Western leaders and they will die sad really i see videos daily of Americans getting killed and Russians posting their gopro's videos i dont get why these guys wear gopro's like it's some video game and they want to post their kills later but only end up recording their own deaths....th-cam.com/video/FZ6VQvcOcj4/w-d-xo.html

His eyes tell a million stories, you can see him reliving it all in his head throughout the video. Definitely a warrior.

And thats why he is there. Cause in civilian life he'd be lost, NOT because some higher moral reasoning. Thats why he fought in many dif conflicts. 99% of these guys there are war junkies, plus money is good. But to think he's there to spread democracy is ludacris.

Damn this is as real as it gets and he has been in war for a job for 18 years. The interview was very interesting and in deph and he tells what is really like out in the battlefield. How the Ukraine and Russians fight and engage in combat. The Ukrainian foregin legion is a paid mercenary unit so it must be very difficult and intense especially when you don't have or part of a professional millitary. I wish he said anything about the Ukraine air force and Navy how they engage operate and battle in the battlefield.

Ukraine is an oblast of Russia, this is a civil war, getting involved is a selfish and stupid act.

This is the closest look up on an actual warrior on the field. It is impressive the huge amount of stress and trauma this guy has been under. His nervous system is messed up, trembling hands, broken voice and most importantly the two parts of his face on the eyeline have no symmetry any more, an indication of severe, permanent trauma, one can usually see it in people who take lives. Hopefully I am wrong, but we are looking at a sooner or not much later-to-be dead person.
