Toronto rapper Drake is back with his 3rd commercial release, Nothing Was The Same. Here, Drake continues with his lyrical obsession with the tattered relationships of his past, which is fine, but he hops on a gauntlet of nutty trap beats on this LP that are less than flattering to his clean-cut persona.

this album is really good and I aint even a Drake fan. Tuscan Leather, From Time, Too Much or Pound Cake are some of the best songs Drake has made imo. Plus Hold On, We're Going Home is one of the few songs I've heard on commercial radio stations and I have really liked. Production in most of the album is amazing.

@Great Destroyer I agree I think the Beatles are better than drake. Their impact on music is much bigger than what drake's impact was even though drake is breaking some of their records. I do believe the Beatles legacy will outshine drake's in the end of the day. Their last true project came out how long ago? And we're still talking about them. Legendary artist.

@Leonardo Resta because he's engineered his song output and album structures to maximize streams on Spotify. His worst reviewed album ever (Scorpion) broke Spotify records to be the first album to hit 1 billion streams in its first week, because it's got 25 tracks that are cut to make you listen to them all the way through instead of skipping to just listen to tracks people actually like. Spotify is a shitty way to measure relevance. His albums have been reviewed consistently worse and worse as the decade went on. I don't think anyone's going to give a shit about him in three years.

To be honest, when I firat heard this album I thought like this guy. But giving a good look back on it, it shows Drake's maturing as an artist and that he's not afraid to be himself, something most hip hop artists are afraid to do. And he also appeals to the mainstream hip hop crowd with tracks like All Me, Started from the Bottom, and Worst Behavior. And then there's From Time and Tuscan Leather. Amazing tracks. Solid 8 for me.

theneedledrop Anthony I thought u were off point on this one. You made such good points about Drake being different but then you disrespected his efforts. Drake is not a great lyricist or singer. But he blends them better than anyone before him. Ironically, his lyrics in his R&B songs are deeper and show more insight then his rap verses. Mainstream rap is just a bunch of one hit wonders without Drake.
And yes, there are mainstream staples ( Ross, Wayne, Nicki, blah blah) Just meant Drake stands out, love or hate

Worst behavior is actually a pretty dope song imo. a very strong third verse and catchy hook. "open the mail, starin' at the check enough to make you throw up, man it's gross what I net." clever stuff, and a good album, you need time to for it to grow on you.

What people fail to realize, is that this album is more of "one" of the categories of drakes multiple genres.
Yeah this album is focused on relationships or what not, but if you look back at his previous albums, they all had a specific "feel" to them as well.
I'm sure the album after this one is going to be way more uplifting.
Btw went to his concert in Boston on the 30th and it was amazing!

almost 10 years later, drake half-assed a 21 track album with 12 pregnant girls emojis on the cover art, and a few good songs were leaks and one where he claimed to be a lesbian and sold 600K in the second week and held spot 1 to 21 on the charts while beefing with Kanye West sparking a debate on who's better, and NWTS is now considered the best of Drake and a classic record you reference whenever he releases something..
so yes he went from the biggest up and comer to the biggest/highest selling artist of the 2010s.

The album was ass then it’s ass now
Loved the first two songs, really had me looking forward to the rest, then I get hit with Wu-Tang Forever, Own it and Worst Behavior, which just took that away. From Time, Too Much and Pound Cake kept me going. With the other songs I just had a feeling of "when is this song going to end". But that's just me.
What he said about started from the bottom can apply to most of the songs on the album
Fantanos videos are really timeless. 7 years later and his videos still look the same.
Still flabbergasted that he gave this a 5. Production is fantastic, Drake’s rapping is quality and enjoyable for most of the project, and there are many memorable one liners on here. NWTS deserved at least a 7.

in Wu Tang Forever, he was speaking on hip hop as if it was his girl. the hook talks about how he loves when he's with music and how he used to mess around with it, but didn't take it seriously until he was told that he could take over the game. this isnt a direct quote, but this is what I go when I asked him about it and it makes sense. shits fire. have to look deeper into the lyrics, no matter how shallow they appear.

I like your reviews a lot, and I like how deep into this you go. However, I strongly disagree with this review. Easily one of his best albums, and some of the best features on any of his albums.
Rewatching this video and now I'm just awestruck at how much things have changed since 2013. The world really moved on so fast, even though it's realistically gradual and slow, and in 2023 there's a lot more things that I still need to learn.
