Was this more or less than you thought I'd spent on it?!
For me it's about in line with what I expected. It's worth every penny though!
Having owned a 2010 D4 for about 6 years, that’s less than I would have thought.
Although I do have to use an independent for servicing and repairs etc, so that adds to the cost. For mine servicing and repairs run to about £2,000 annually.
Despite that, I love it and couldn’t think of anything I’d rather have, aside from an L322/405.
If you are an a RR forum, if it’s the one that part of Disco 3/4 there are some incredibly knowledgeable people on there and very free with their help and support.
Have been wanting one for a while and while doing my research, found your original post.
Still want one and have had my eye on a few but lost out. Glad you're sharing the details and honest costs as it helps to plan for things.

I’ve had my Range Rover Nearly 2 years coming from every other manufacture you can think of and type of vehicle and I wouldn’t drive anything else ever again your bang on when you say puts a smile on your face every time you drive it because it does me too lol you just feel like a king of the road when you drive one 😜😜

Nice content Sam, very interesting and have subscribed. Have a Disco 3 HSE and while not as luxurious as the RR I also find it provides a very comfortable way of getting around.
Cooper tires! Nice. Great choice. We have Cooper Zeon LTZ's on our 2005 Supercharged. Only issues we've had on ours were the sunroof drains, and we think the previous owners ran over a concrete bollard with it on access height, and damaged the steering rack. Other than that, zero issues with it. Great cars. If anyone wants one, make sure it's been properly maintained by either the dealer or (and this is very important) an accredited Land Rover specialist.

I bought a 2 year old, 19000 mile Westminster in 2014 and ran it for 5 years and another 80000 miles, I fully concur with how your Rangie makes you feel; every time I climbed into my car I felt like royalty. My only problems included an oil leak, a windscreen wiper motor and a driver's seat motor, all fixed for under £1000.

Good vid, I think I will definitely try and buy a Range Rover probably same era / 2010/2012. But just waiting to clear my car finance first. Looking to change to it for more space and to keep the comfort and a lot of the mod cons and also 4x4 capabilities could be handy / fun, also would like a car that I could do some of the maintenance on myself. Also secretly I always wanted one but have been put off in the past buy some of the horror stores of past owners, But doing research has reassured me what I may get myself into. But I am excited to give it a go and am confident i will like it. Enjoy seeing the progress of yours.

Haha! My taste in music is pretty eclectic, but on a long drive I'll generally default to an American country music playlist - think Alan Jackson, Luke Combs, Tim McGraw etc. Aside from that, it'd be a really weird mix of 70s Prog Rock, 80s cheese and modern dance / electronic music. What that says about my personality, I have no idea! Haha!

Sam - I live in West Virginia and our roads are in horrible shape - My 2012 Supercharged RR rides rough over the jagged parts of the roads and head whip is a bit tough - I've discovered that things improve when you flip the stick shifter to Sport mode - I've spent a ton of money bringing mine into shape - You're doing good ...

Hi Sam, great video and appreciate the straight up honest review. With any 2nd hand car you should have a £2k put aside just in case you have spent under that. Although, you are able to to the work yourself which saves a lot of money on labour. Also some of the spend is your choice not a need so provides a level of weighting on the overall cost spent. A car that is 60K plus new is not going to be cheap to fix all of the time so we have to be realistic. If you priced up all the work done at dealer or even in dependant specialists it would be eye watering. But for you, it seems, the buzz you get out of solving the problems yourself is a payback in itself, it is an achievement and I well done for that. I had a brand new Mercedes E220d on a 64 plate and after only 3 weeks, the adaptions in-the gearbox were lost and it never ran as smoothly afterwards in 3 years of ownership! Even when I complained enough that Stuttgart got involved and they changed 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear sensors on the 7 GTronic gearbox. And after 18months i had a rear diff wine which was confirmed and changed under warranty. All this from a 40K car. So you have a better car for less than a quarter of the cost. Right, back to Autotrader and Range Rover searches :)

I should have done an estimate of dealer labour actually, I think that would have been interesting to work out. For example, I think the alternator book time is about 5 hours on top of the £400+ for the alternator, so it would have been a pretty significant bill!
I run a 2010 TDV8 RR Vogue and yeah you can’t run them on a shoestring, but they are so comfortable. I regularly do the 250 mile trip home, fuelled up beforehand and we don’t stop until we get there. It’s like sitting in your favourite armchair!
I have a 2007 3.6 TDV8 and was interested to hear you comment on the suspension bushes. Mine sounds like old bed springs and I did try (perhaps naively) spraying them (those that I could get to anyway) in WD. Hasn’t made a blind bit of difference but can now see that I may need to get it looked at.
Yeah it's a tell-tale sign of the rear bushes being near their end! I think what happens is the rubber delaminates inside and it starts rotating against the metal part of the bush, causing a squeak.
Sam those mpg figures are good , I have owned a 2013 Volvo XC90 2.4 diesel Executive 50,000 miles for 4 years ,
as soon as I bought it I had a full service , cam belt and followers , gear box oil change done regardless
of what the sales people told me had been done , the car has been superb , smooth , very reliable and plenty of power
at 70 mph + not that I speed 🤷🏼♂️36 mpg loaded up , around town not brilliant , so from a 4.4 + weight I think your doing well 😊👏🏻
The harsh ride could be due to the air compressor, or if the rear suspension rubber bushes were replaced with Polly bushes.
I want to buy it once you've finished with it 😄

I was thinking the same thing, a pretty standard repair list for any vehicle.
You've done well with this car Sam, it's a beautiful ride! Keep an eye for rusty brake lines and handbrake pads. Rotors and pads will need to be replaced at some point as well. They are heavy cars and they chew them up pretty quickly. I just had all of those replaced and cost quite a bit. I have the petrol V8 and i'm ashamed to talk about the mileage I get! ;)

I changed my suspension on my, 322 I put struts and springs on mine rides on middle setting no more ducking and diving good for road use cheers
Hey Sam I'm a mechanic and work at a land rover specialist, we had a sport in with hard riding suspension which turned out to be one of the ride height sensors incorrectly reading and causing the bag to not have the correct pressures in, it's worth getting a diag machine plugged in and looking at the live data for each ride height sensor make sure they look right! they also like to clog up with mud and crap causing them to stick/go stiff and break so worth looking at them aswell!, enjoyed watching your vids( even though I work on them everyday!) 😂😉

Do you know if the Sport was riding unevenly? Or did it ride level, just harshly?
I'll have a better look at the ride height data with my IID tool soon and report back. I don't want to just fire four new height sensors at it, but it may come to that!
@@SamsMotors no worries mate the sport was riding harshly suspension was rock hard! but we have had ones in that are completely uneven in one way or another and had to be calibrated or had new sensors!
seems to be an issue across the whole model range, if your data is good maybe try calibrating all of them, let me know how you get on!

Sam! I just subscribed to your channel. I live in Phoenix, AZ and just purchased a 2008 RR L322 and I love it. I have one issue, where the RR engineer should be run out of town. I have the 4.4 Jaguar engine and the AC Freon line runs right across the top of the fan shroud. It’s fixed on the right side of the radiator and has a flex line on the left side of the radiator. So every time you need to remove the fan shroud, you have to have the Freon captured and then, after the repair, have the AC system evacuated and recharged. There is hardly any flex in the line without bending and cracking the tube and there is no where to relocate this line. I want to look into maybe a quick disconnect. If they can remove and replace the whole front brake system at a 24 Hrs of LeMans pit stop in about one minute, they have to be using a quick connect, where you don’t even have to bleed the brake system. Just curious if you have the same issue in England and how you handled it. Stay well and keep up the great video sessions.

On my 4.4 TDV8, it has the same a/c pipe going over the top of the cowl - but it has flexible hose either side of the aluminium centre bit, so you can move it out of the way of the fan without breaking into it.
The only thing I can suggest that'd be a permanent fix would be to get the pipe remade as a flexible hose (any air con specialist should be able to do that).

Sam, have you had a wheel alignment yet? I think when getting a new to you vehicle you should go through all of the fluids. You’ve done the trans and engine oil, how about coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, diff and transfer case oils. I got my RR about 6 months ago and I’m trying to get through all of these too. Those will add to your total initial costs, but won’t have to be done every year.
No alignment yet... I did go in for one but they couldn't get the adjustment nuts/bolts undone 🙈. I'm sure they're not that tight but they're probably more used to little city cars and VW Golfs than big RRs.
As for fluids, coolant I have changed probably around half of it so far from when I did the alternator, and the stuff that came out looked like new. Brake fluid is on the list. PAS fluid I hadn't thought about but it's probably overdue. Diffs and transfer box were done in a recent video.
Great cars. I've done 125k miles in my 2010 TDV8 now. No real issues. The odd electrical fault. They are great value.
I saw another video where a chap put the arch rubber from a Freelander 2 onto the rear arches of his Range Rover to cover the exposed metal. Seemed to work pretty well and was a cheap fix. Looked fairly OEM too.
Yes I've seen that too - might be a plan.

Hey Sam, great videos. How have you found the new tyres? I have a Disco 2 and debating Cooper AT3 Sport 2 as the general grabbers in the size i want are unavalible and i think BFG's will be too hard as i'm more road then off road. Cheers Rob
The Coopers have been perfect so far, they're quiet enough and hold the road well in all conditions and temperatures we've had so far. I definitely would steer clear of BFG All Terrains these days - they used to be the best, but tyre technology has come on a long way and I think the Coopers beat them in pretty much every way.
Sam, you are my guy and I love the work you do and your approach to things. However, I do have some tough love to give you. As soon as you can, please lose the raised white letters on your tires. These have no place on such an awesome vehicle. I think you can even turn the ones you have around. If so, do it! Raised white letters on tires are the equivalent to some dude wearing his gold chains on the outside of his clothes.
I've recently bought similar car. 2012 TDV8 Westminster at 195k, for £8500. fantastic drive, and a step up from my old 2002 petrol v8. refinement is better, sublime quiet ride, and resetting trip computer, and doing a 250 mile roundtrip on m40, 70mph, and was showing 40.1 mpg. with around 10 miles in towns. It looks fantastic, and only a few touch ups to sort, and rear inner arches to protect too. these are fantastic cruising cars and so useful too. i also bought an Autobiography interior to fit, and have that job to do. AB leather is so much softer, and the lower dash has panels of leather too.. like the door panels. looks amazing.
really enjoying your vids, simple, straightforward, and informative. keep them coming. i have an adaptive damper alarm too, and as a possible link, i can't select any terrain programs. -(i get a dong, and message, if i try) it was ok, till i jacked it to fiddle with a dodgy starter motor, and as since, its a leftover, also possible as battery was disconnected..car now droops overnight at front too. -was fine.
p.s. i love the little grins you do, driving the car. we all do that!! -after one of these, there is no other car to desire!
Sam, try your MPG. on a long run, -reset 'tripA' before the motorway, and see if you can average 40mpg, over a distance, at 70mph. ( i had no traffic/contraflows) - i know its only the computer, but its just to compare.
I totally agree with you Sam. Love just relaxing listening to music and driving my Range Rover. Just snowed approximately 12” the other day which isn’t massive but enough to see how well my RR handled driving around in it. The snow was obviously no match for my RR. This one is my fourth one and I love the brand. No other SUV like a RR. I have enjoyed watching you working on this one. I’m sorry I was critical when watching the first vid but I mistakenly thought it was just another hate vid on Range Rovers. I was mistaken.

No it's the 4.4 petrol so you may be right you may have got the best priced Range Rover
Check the wiring going to the top of front shocks,i have had broken wires on both sides on mine which caused the suspension to go rock hard,they had been poorly repaired in the past.
Cheers Chris, did this trigger the adaptive dynamics fault on yours when the suspension went hard? Mine doesn't trigger any errors during normal driving - but the wires have been repaired in the past.
It would be really nice to get some advice from you. There's so much to know with models. I'm looking at a 60 plate autobiography 4.4tdv8. It's got a really nice body kit. People call it autobiography bodykit but not all autobiography seem to have it? Also I'm not sure about tow bars with that bodykit?
You could consider ‘Linex’ which is a bed liner coating for trucks etc but it’d be perfect for inner wheel arches
Yeah this is another option, the only trouble with that is how messy it is to apply!
@@SamsMotors yeah it can be messy if you don’t mask off every area around it that you don’t want to be Linex’d but it is a very hard wearing coating. Just need to make sure you sort out any rust or damaged surfaces beneath it first.
I felt like a whale in a fish pond driving round in my Range Rover, no one ever would let you pull out either! The tdv8 engine is awesome and sounds really good when u nail it, fuel economy was awful half wished I’d of gone for the v8 petrol in all honesty, I had hardly any issues when I had it, had only done 48k n I done 15k in it n was brilliant for reliability, I sold it as the wife wasn’t keen driving it!

I'm not a trained mechanic but I am an engineer in my day job. I've always done my own repairs. My advice is to start small and work your way up as you build your tools and confidence.

@@SamsMotors I’ve owned a Range Rover Sport for 8 years, and it’s been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Extremely reliable. I am also an engineer and do all the maintenance myself.
Might be worth checking the air suspension compressor with a scanner plugged in to see if the pressure is correct to specs.

On a run late last year driving grandad style between 50/60 mph up the A12 mine achieved 45mpg, regular routine maintenance is a must on these.

Interesting on the fuel economy. My SD4 Freelander 2 sits at around the 27 mpg mark for short (about 12miles) trip and upto around the 36 mpg mark on a longer run (around 65 miles) so really, side by side, not much in it!
If you're happy to sit at 56mph I've had it steady at 60mpg on a flat motorway (tdv8 4.4), but prefer to get mid 20s mpg and enjoy driving it :) At high speeds it's a brick aerodynamically so mpg really drops off the faster you go

@@SamsMotors 😂 I tend to put the premium diesel in mine and if it’s empty it can easily cost around £130 to fill up!, good idea to get get a seat cover mate keep it looking lovely, got some nice side vents for yours if your interested mate? Not a fan of the home gearbox oil changes myself Sam as there is still so much oil in the torque converter, it’s a job that only needs doing every 10 years or 144,000 miles according to Range Rover so I decided to have mine done properly at the stealers... admittedly it was around £870 and I had both diffs and the transfer box done too at around £100 each but that’s just me, worthwhile letting your viewers know the cost though. Hi Sam, recently bought this motor and love it but hit by a big bill - not surprised! Higher mileage (130k) but with a good service history so I was a little surprised. Needed a replacement oil cooler, new turbo pipe and replacement brake lines - had a full service / wheel alignment drop link bushes replaced too. Worked carried out by excellent local specialist - not cheap but they know what they're doing. Very keen to get the motor back now but apparently issue with exhaust temp sensor and subsequently a full DPF. Any thoughts on whether I need to address this issue asap, or can I get the car back and run it for a few weeks first as really need it back! Cheers!!
All terrain tyres is looking likely on mine, will wear these ones out first then looking at Cooper st max.
The S/T Maxx are awesome, they're a bit more aggressive than what I've put on, but they should still be good on the road.

What size did you go for? I’m on 255 50 20. Not sure what I should swap too for gentle mud landing and primarily on road
@@jon81crowe I'm on 275/55 R20 which stand at about 32" tall compared with the 30" standard size. I think it's a nice balanced look that fits without any modifications.
From Barcelona (Spain) to Manchester UK I averaged 35.1mpg, at "motorway speeds" (80mph ish) in bad weather. On the way back, towing a car trailer and Mini I managed 35mpg, obviously down at a max of 60mph and a fairly aerodynamic trailer. These are definitely way less efficient when cold, once warmed up the MPG improves dramatically. The biggest impact on the MPG is the tendency to boot it and enjoy that wave of wafty torque :)

@@SamsMotors Absolutely is, I think most of it is to do with that very high torque engine coupled with the gearbox like you say in the video, you can drive it around all day and be barely above 1500rpm. For a motorway cruise it's ideal. One thing I thought, you mention in the video about the MPG not being accurate because of the tyres being different sizes (you can fix this with the GAP IiDtool etc), but the MPG may actually be correct on the readout as I'm pretty sure it uses emissions sensor (c02?) to calculate it rather than anything else, not sure, maybe someone else can comment.
costs to come: split plastic rocker covers.. which are part of the turbo air compression cct inlet side at least £1500 the pair, turbos typically last 80k-120k miles £3.5k+, still love them though!
Even if that stuff does fail, I'd never be paying anywhere near that to get it fixed, as I'd do both of those jobs myself.
Are you getting a warning for adaptive suspension? I had adaptive warning and was a hard ride, and was just a corroded wire. I have 2011 rrs. Might be different though.
Sadly I'm not, as that would make it a lot easier to track down the issue! The wire issue is the same on the L322 though - mine has been repaired previously but I guess it'd be worth checking over it all.

Any plans to fix the incorrect speedometer reading? I know it's only 6% but that will add up. Not sure if it's electronic - so could be programmed perhaps or if it's a gearbox pick up? Other RR's must have similar size wheels?
I think my IID tool should be able to recalibrate it - so I'll have a go with that soon.
Sam I use a traffic for work only carry light tools but some times I need to get in length 2 meters would it fit 👍
I think it's only about 185cm to the back of the front seats (as I'm 6 foot and I can just about lie down with the rear seats removed), so it probably wouldn't go inside unless it'll fit between the front seats and sit ontop of the arm rest.
Otherwise, I'd just get some roof bars and stick it up there!

Bought mine a year ago 62 plate 68K miles, averaging about 25mpg, on short journeys and towing So cannot fault the MPG for such a big car. Spent about £600 about on front brake pipes, advisory on the MOT, would probably lasted a while but thought I would just get them done and replacement lower control arms, bushes totally shot lots of movement under heavy braking. Apart from that great car.

@@BrandonEccles Still runs really well, as I said above mostly towing. Not many miles due to Covid, about 6K a year, mostly going to off road competitions. Not used the caravan much at all, hopefully this year. When I bought it I was looking at a defender 110 same year and same miles but 10k more expensive, so I have some cash in the bank for repairs, which I will need to do at some point. Everything is expensive for them BUT if you are aware going in it does not hurt too much. Every car at the new price point of these is expensive, BMW, Mercedes, etc etc and they can all go wrong.
What's the infotainment system like? Ie media, reversing camera, digital TV etc. Is it quite slow and laggy? Do you use it much?
It's fine, honestly. The reversing camera is decent. The touch screen is nothing special, but it is useable. I have a bluetooth adapter plugged into the iPod connection to stream music, so I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks etc, and that works fine for me. The digital TV does work but the signal is pretty unreliable, depending where you're parked. I can't see myself ever using it anyway.

Lol I've just bought a sportage and it's got 19in rims I had a shock when I priced tyres 4 it at 128 for 1 cheapest set matador I didn't bother looking at premium as they were 200 +.😁

Havd you fixed ride yet? If not its the wire to front suspension mounts. Mine was drivers side. It pulls out when you put full lock on. Kit available to fix it
Hi Jim. Did yours trigger the Adaptive dynamics error/warning? Mine doesn't - so I don't think it's the front damper wires. But I will check them anyway as they have been repaired previously.
@@SamsMotors Hi, yes they did, but was intermittent for a while. Had a wiring loom fix fitted and no problems since, but was only a few months ago. Issue took a long time to diagnose and fix.
Do you have issues with fuel gauge jumping around after you've run it almost empty?
Watch out for window auto up failing after unplugging battery. Usually starts to work a few weeks later.
They're a pain, something is always broken, but I wouldn't have any other car

Now have l405 sdv8 like night and day the tdv8 is very agricultural in comparison
The engine itself is almost identical, it must be the refinement / NVH of the vehicle itself making it seem quieter or smoother.

Exactly! I could have spent £9-10k on a lower mileage one and still needed to spend out on it.
I did a run up to Scotland in mine range rover 4.4 2012 I do use fuel clears every 3 month and I do mix Vpower half supermarkets fuel and half Vpower it was about 4 and a half hours there I was doing about 60 to 65 some time 70 I was always above 40 best I got was 46.7mpg which was fantastic.
There are fantastic cars just wish the road tax wasn't so high on it considering my vehicle before was a 2011 in beautiful rear blue audi A8 SE EXECUTIVE 4.2 that tax was only £300 a year.
The UK has it really easy on road tax compared to lots of places! The 4.4 TDV8 is 2,350 euros a year here on private tax.
@@SamsMotors that's about under £2000 a year which doesn't make any sense for car tax at all how are the wages in general for a normal vehicle they as we all know different countries have different rules on road tax and motoring.
Is that the import tax or just a general road tax.
The only advice I can give is sell it and buy a 90s Diesel Fourtrak :D Great video!

As much as I love gramps, I can't wait to get back into a fourtrak. We have a swb 1989 sat waiting back there, already put the turbo in it before we left, has less wiring in the whole truck than the seats in gramps!

I remember a lovely comment - can’t remember from where; general public - reliability is so poor; air suspension on land / range rovers are crap, you have to replace the air springs after 10 - 15 years ---- Toyota owner -- outstanding - so reliable, the air springs last 10years / 100k plus -bullet proof. My disco 2 (while about to get some love £££) is still actually the cheapest car I’ve owned per mile.

Cheers Dale, although the proper ZF oil is a lot more than that. Although it's expensive, I'd want to stick with what ZF recommend as it'd be a lot more expensive to replace a cooked transmission!

Use Toughguard or Durabak Rubber coating that you use for a pickup's bin on your chassis and wheel arches. www.duram.co.za/product/durabak/ I use my Rangie for fishing along the coast and drive a lot on gravel roads. I have not had any rust as it is really tough.
I prefer the L322 design wise but why don't you get the L4005?
Like yourself, I prefer the styling and interior of the L322. But there's no doubt the L405 is a better car in many ways, being much more modern. I'll probably have one when they depreciate enough!
@@SamsMotors Of course it would be a better car in many ways. Thats to be expected as tech gets better over time. BUT design on a car is a huge thing, thats why most people like a certain car. I think they've gone backwards massively with the L4005, it looks feminine and curvy. I almost never see them either, looks like a lot of people would rather get the 'cool' sport. I think they need to make the next gen of Range Rover look rugged again, a big reason why for example the G class is so popular. The current one looks like an overweight tall woman.

People bang on about Range Rover costs, but the bottom line is... ALL luxury cars cost money to maintain and run. At the lower end of 'luxury' I ran a 2004 Peugeot 607 for four years (2006-10) and some of the parts defied logic - £500 for a door card!!! I'm looking for a 4.4 tdv8 right now and, even one that is supposedly 'sorted' I would expect to spend another £2k on to make absolutely sure all the bits that are likely to catch me out (alternator - and water pump - being two of them on a 100k miles car) and then, hopefully, I'll have 70k relatively trouble free motoring. Please note I did say hopefully.... 🙄🤞🤞🤞🤞

It does, but there are a lot of "DIY fixes" that have emerged, where you can replace internal bits of the module for not much money.
