    The easiest way to know where the entrance was or would have been is that ( If Christian) you enter in the West end, the altar is in the east end. Christian churches in those times followed the same building plan / orientation to the sun. 😁 I really enjoy these vlogs. Thanks so much for making them!

    Braw 'journey' and video, Lad. You certainly picked a dreich and blustery day to go walk about on that hill. With it being so slick, you did a smashing job of not busting your bum and possibly damaging your camera, although glad you made it without falling. Keep up the good work. Slàinte

    Lovely video! Watch yourself! One of the first things I had on my list for our visit was to climb up Arthur’s Seat and we never made it and I still never knew that the chapel was there, good grief. How wonderfully old and even still beautiful, the archway of the door. Too bad you weren’t closer to the Sheep’s Heid, a pint might have been in order!

    Started watching (and enjoying) your videos in November, getting ready for a trip to Edinburgh with my sister, planned for 2019. Then in december I was diagnosied with cancer so I now watch (and enjoy) your videos while going thru my chemo sessions, getting ready to kick this cancer in the butt. We are now hoping and planning to get to Edinburgh in 2020. I plan to beat this before then. Just wanted to thank you for helping me enjoy this time while I’m fighting and healing. Keep having such joy showing us all your amazing city. Can’t wait to see it in person!!!

    Don't forget to put dunsapie hill on your list. There was one of arthurs seats three iron age hill forts on top. Not sure if you can see any of it though. Also, you can see the prehistoric cultivation terraces on the east side of arthurs seat facing dunsapie hill & loch

    • @ClanBroonford
      @ClanBroonford  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did not know that, but the cultivation terrace rings a bell. Is that the part that looks like steps from a distance?

      I guess the other two iron age hill forts are Arthurs seat itself and the little peak that the terraces are on, I don't remember the name but I wanna say its crow hill or something like that

    Today, all that remains of the chapel are parts of the north wall plus remnants of another building a little to the south west, which has sometimes been called a hermitage but was probably just a store room. The remaining chapel wall shows signs of vaulting, and it is thought that when complete the building would have comprised a small three-bay chapel, with a three-storey tower at its west end. This odd shape, almost as tall as it was long, supports the idea that the chapel was designed as much to ensure distant visibility as to accommodate worshippers.

    The chapel was probably owned by the military monastic knights of st Anthony, the Arthurs seat is named after the knights of the round table, the Templars of St Anthony were also in leith hospital commandery, there were lots of St Anthony commanderies all over Europe including the pigrims route of the way of St James in Spain, the order started in 1085 in Paris by an aristocrat after his son was cured after touching a St Anthony relic .
    There were also the Hainault knights of St Antony started in 1350 by Duke Albert of Bavaria and Count of Holland that spread to England and a number of Englishman including Bernard Brocas belonged to the order, i've seen plenty of paintings of this knights order(Man with pinks by Jan Van Eyck) , the original knights of St Anthony seems to be secret society formed in Ethiopia in about 370AD not long after St Anthony the Great of Egypt died. The Tau cross was the symbol of St Anthony and Templars and Holy Trinity the Tau cross most likely derives from the Egyptian Ankh

    As for dating, there are references to a grant paid for repairs to St Anthony's Chapel by the Pope in 1426, suggesting the building could date back into the 1300s or beyond. Details of its demise are equally unclear, but presumably, like Holyrood Abbey itself, St Anthony's Chapel fell into disuse and disrepair after the Reformation in 1560.

    So glad I found you! Really enjoying your Edinburgh videos. We are coming in mid-September, so I am doing all the "investigation" here, ha. Don't know if you (or someone) could answer some questions I have - I can't get an answer from travel agents!!! (Weird...) So can someone confirm there is a Tourist Tax now in Edinburgh (and how much is that etc.), and should I be booking accommodations and tours now or closer to September? We are coming from BC Canada. Much thanks!!!

    • @ClanBroonford
      @ClanBroonford  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tourist tax is new, not sure its actually in place...... yet. Apparently its something they do in mainland Europe. it will be £2 a day, but only for the first week. Other countries add it the whole time, however it is to be limited to 1 week only here. You should defiantly book accommodation soon. Although you are coming just after the festival so it should get a bit quieter, i just like to book early. Not sure about tours, but possible get organised for them. Hope that helps.
