@@ryanmaximilian5515 Fagen is correct in not wanting to include Steely Dan in the 'Yacht Rock' category. Their music is several plateaus beyond the likes of Christopher Cross, or the Michael MacDonald version of the Doobie Brothers. Yes, Michael Mac made a contribution to Steely Dan when he was with them, and after he departed, but he was not 'of the Dan'. However, if I had a yacht, I'd definitely be blasting some Dan across the bay on a hot summer's day. Some ice cold Cuervo Gold in hand, and a few young hotties by my side.
His problem is that he doesn't want his LIFE's work trivialized by a stupid term that doesn't define his music in anyway. Steely Dan did some of the greatest musical work in history and was about social injustice not Yachts. It is like calling "The Blues" - "Happy Pharma"
@@ryanmaximilian5515 i wonder if Donald Fagen has ever even seen the youtube series that created the term Yacht Rock, it was uploaded to YT over 17 years ago and done as a faux documentary with amateur actors portraying (in an almost SNL or Mad TV style) Micheal McDonald, Hall and Oates, Kenny Loggins, Jimmy Messina etc and despite it being comedy no one who didn't genuinely love that music would have gone to such lengths to script, dress up as and play those parts, the videos themselves were uploaded at a time when the default YT screen was maybe 1/4th the size it is now but its still a great series and became so popular it over time created the term Yacht Rock, and while i agree this incredible music should not be trivialized i feel that the intent of its originators was genuine and heartfelt and never meant to be taken as anything more than an homage and not a mockery
The Eagles are country rock. There were certain West LA artists that were deliberately trying to use more complex chord progressions and mode shifts from jazz, mixed with grooves from soul. If it's soft rock with just the usual pop progressions, it's Nyacht Yacht.
Here's my take: if you're going to do a very real documentary on "yacht rock" it would need to engage in a very way about this term which is, by the way, extremely and weirdly derogatory which is an entire article in itself. No it's not yacht rock because it implies a kind preppie cluelessness...and also their songs are more
Steely Dan are definitely NOT 'Yacht Rock'. Instrumentally, their music might have a deceptive patina of that, but their lyrics are much too snarky and subversive to fit in with the overall genre. However, if I had a yacht, I'd definitely be blasting the snaky, sinewy strains of Babylon Sisters across the bay on a fine summer's day. Cuz... "You got to shake it baby you got to shake it..."
Well, I know that in all things HISTORY+TIME=GOOD, but for fuck's sake. These are the absolute last records left in the thrift stores for a reason. Tunefulness is hard, I'll give you that. Blandness is inexcusable. And that was the goal. Cut all the edges off everything. Points for being responsible for punk in America. But god damn! Life's too short to go back and listen to this crap voluntarily. Fred and QuestLove should know better. Are they trying to be in every music documentary?
El Punk fue un movimiento en última instancia político más que musical. Si pensamos al punk como una respuesta a un género musical, entonces tendría que oponerse al rock sinfónico, pero no a esta otra música.
so much of the music i took for granted from ages 4-14 now means the world to me, Mom Dad, you werent so square after all, in fact you were brilliant!
It’s giving 70’s too… loving it.🩵🦋🤭
People are trivializing GREAT music. This is a way to devalue GREAT work. I'm with Fagen

I can't understand a fucking thing Donald Fagen says without Walter Becker or Michael McDonald translating.
Such a great documentary. I don’t know what Donald Fagen’s problem is. There’s a lot to be learned from this doc. Highly enjoyable.

What a Joke !! When that MUSIC WAS RELEASED, there were no labels it was just Music. PERIOD !!
Would the Eagles fit in?
In the doc they said no

Ok boomer
@ Not a boomer. Boomers were the asshats originally buying that crap. Besides, good taste is timeless. But if you like it, great.
