The song (original), was in the movie “She’s Having a Baby”, and played during the scene when it seemed like the main male character was going to loose his partner in childbirth. He’s in the waiting room, worrying, trying not to loose it, thinking about her, their relationship, ... So the “work” is literally the birth of their child.

Ascension or Sumthin Sumthin are great intros to his style.

This is a remake. Kate Bush wrote and recorded this specifically for the John Hughes movie, "She's Having A Baby".
It was used for the climax of the movie where Jake finds out his wife and future child are in danger. It was made to match the montage that played showing the couple during happier times and cut with current scenes.
She wrote it from Jake's point of view...

I've seen Maxwell in concert 5 times. He's so 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. He has groove song, tender songs, reflective songs. Such a talent.
When I first heard this, couldn't believe it was actually possible for a man to sing a whole song in falsetto. But guess what, he actually did a live performance of this gem (it's a cover) even before recording it! Plus, he did it completely live and 100% in falsetto. No main/chest voice as you can hear on the studio version. I'm still impressed! 20 years later and this dude is sounding exactly the same! A real king!

"This Woman's Work" is about the moment of birth and not knowing if it went well or not, told from the point of view of the man/father. Kate was mainly popular in the late 70s and 80s in Europe. A key 80s song of hers to check out would be "Running Up That Hill".

This song was on soundtrack for movie "She's Having A Baby." You got it right when you guessed it has something to do with motherhood. In the movie the wife was having complication with delivery. This was playing.
Best Maxwell story i have was when Maxwell first appeared on the scene in the late 90's, he could do no wrong in the eyes of women. Maxwell did a concert in DC during this time and I tuned in to the local radio station to listen to some music. The station had to talk about Maxwell's concert. Women keep calling in raving about Maxwell. The men calling in had a funnier response. They basically thanked Maxwell for making their jobs easier when they got home from the concert... "All I had to do was knock it on out! Thanks Maxwell!"
I think that became a running gag for me at that point. Just put some Maxwell on, leave the room (go watch Sports Center or something), come back in about an hour and she's ready to go!

Never was a fan of Maxwell, but one particular moment I was in my car in Long Beach California I had just lost my mom to a staff infection and complications through diabetes. I was there with her until her last breath. I was driving home and this song came on and was distorted noise in the background because of what I was feeling at the time. Then the lyrics " I know you gotta little life in you left, I know you gotta little strength in you left" I broke down. Pulled over and exited the 605 freeway and just let it poor. Loved this song and became a big fan of Maxwell. Miss you mom

This song is actually a remake...the song was originally on the soundtrack for a kevin bacon movie from the 80s called "shes having a baby"....in the movie when this song played his wife almost died giving birth to their child....it was amazing in that movie with the original singer but maxwell definitetly put his own stamp on it also.
