I think this was his comeback song. He hadn’t released a song/album for 7-8 years. I still remember this debuting on 106 & Park. I instantly fell in love with it. Such a beautiful song.
Damn, why Maxwell isn't a ultra, mega, superstar is beyond me! Dude kinda reminds me of Sade in that they pop up randomly every few years, drop a megabomb of a album, then completely disappear. I literally know nothing about Maxwell other than the music he's made. Outstanding talent whom I can only wish has more in store for us at some point. 👍

Maxwell definitely has a good amount of discography but he’s one of those artists who will disappear for years then pop up with a new record out of the blue. And we appreciate it each time.
Maxwell came out of the gate strong with this one. He hadn't been around in 7 years and was virtually missing from music. He dropped this and it was a breath of fresh air in the world of R&B/soul. Still wish he'd bless us more often!

That's what I wanted to share as well! He is taking accountability of how he treated her and doing the right thing by letting her go, for her sake. She deserved better. He just wasn't ready to have his afflictions and flaws placed under a microscope, which typically happens in transformative relationships like this one. That's my take after analyzing the song and the lyrics. It wasn't all her or even 50/50, 80/50... It was him.

I always interpreted as he messed up and knew they weren’t good together. Even though they broke up the more time they’re apart the more he misses her. It’s the musical version of the phrase “if you love something, let it go. If they love you they’ll find their way back”.

This whole album is fire, I'm glad you're discovering Maxwell. Patiently waiting for you to discover his earlier stuff, they're not all heartbreaking he's got some funky, two-stepping, freaky songs that'll leave you smiling. (Suite Lady, Til the Cops Come Knockin, Get to Know You, Ascension) I could go on and on .
His 1st. album was backed by Sade's band Sweetback.

This entire album is great. I have four of his albums (Urban Hang Suite, MTV Unplugged, Embrya, and Blacksummersnight). They get better and better. Saw him live in 2010. Great live performer, so any live performance is worthy of a reaction.
"Embrya" is best heard all together because the songs run into each other.
