    Atkins was right, and not a quack.
    I used to think he was because I was a vegetarian for decades - and ended up with borderline metabolic syndrome.
    I've been a Phinney fan since 2013 and never looked back.

      Anyone who holds an opinion contrary to the accepted paradigm is considered 'a quack'. Or worse. In some cases, even QUESTIONING the paradigm or the 'experts' - regardless of the agenda, or the religious beliefs (7th Day Adventists believe that eating animals or animal products leads to 'impure thoughts' and wickedness), or the profit motive of those experts.
      There is a presentation on TH-cam that was made before the British parliament in which a courageous physician reveals the extent to which medical research, the publishing of research, the manipulation of data and statistics, and the practice of medicine is manipulated to increase profits.

      I think you're supposed to BUY THE BOOK. But the gist of what he was rapidly mumbling, was that it's really easy to make high-fat dressings which are delicious. Just get a good blender or food processor, and combine the desired fats with aromatics (onion, garlic, spices, herbs, lemon, parsley, celery...) and salt.

    • @Casmige
      @Casmige 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an insightful question!, I'd like to see the answer as well since Muscle, like Fat, simply increases in size (& weight) but is neither lost nor converted.
      I would suspect that the Muscle mass simply remained constant since the follow-up study of the Keto-Adaptive study?? showed that the muscle metabolism efficiency actually increased as outlined in 17:00 Segment of the presentation.

      I ignore the protein quantity, because I naturally stop after a normal amount even though I frequently cook up a steak that is sold at Whole Foods, probably 10 ounces. I slice up the cooked meat for lunch the next day. I like to eat an arugula and/or lettuce salad once a day with apple cider vinegar and olive oil or 5- minute Keto Caesar Dressing (Ruled Me), 5-6 ounces of a Keto coleslaw (fully loaded Keto coleslaw) and/or buttery cauliflower purée. I enjoy bulletproof coffee for breakfast, sometimes I throw in an egg yolk. If I am super hungry I will cook up some bacon and eggs. I do not use any sweeteners, and I limit dairy. Be sure to enjoy salt, even going out of your way to add salt. Extra salt will make you feel better. Dr. Westman is a great resource; he authored the new Atkins.

      I'm 72, learned I was pre-diabetic a year ago. I like veggies, bell peppers and onions are my favorite, but found they raise my blood sugar. So, now I eat mostly meat, almost no veg except for some occasional cauliflower or asparagas, and if they are on hand, a strawberry or two for something sweet.
      I eat a lot of high fat hamburger, some rib eyes, bacon and eggs. Don't really care for roasted chicken.
      Yes, it sounds boring, but I don't miss the carbs. I'll fry a good size hamburger patty, slice up a few mushrooms, add them and some butter to the pan just before the meat is done, then scrape everything onto my plate. Add some mustard, and I shovel it in.
      Down 43 pounds since I started, 14 months ago, most of it in the first few months. a1c 5.6 to 5.7, so I still have work to do. My PCP had never run an a1c or fasting insulin test on me until I asked him, ten years too late.

      If you listen to the presentation again, watch for where he talks about people saying, 'well, ok, nutitional ketosis may be good for weight loss, but you can't exercize on it'. Then he shows examples of athletes that are very successful on a ketogenic diet. If athletes can row from Calif to Hawaii in 21 days or run 100 miles over mountain trails, etc on a ketogenic diet, then the average person will have no problem doing their work and whatever activities they enjoy.
      You probably know that people who have been on calorie-restricted diets generally have very little energy.
      You will also notice that some of the research he cites includes both 'regular' people and athletes. Not sure how this diet would work for mermaids. :-)

    You should eat a whole food starchy diet with plenty of vegetables. Low protein low fat. Starchy whole complex carbohydrates with all the fiber is the key to long life. That has been shown dramatically to be true in mice for extending mice lives by 35% whereas high protein shortens life dramatically. The high carbohydrate mice turned out chunkier but nevertheless extended their lifespan. The high protein mice were leaner and stronger but died much earlier from many causes. For humans, the biomarkers match effects observed in the mice for biomarkers so there is every reason to think it applies to humans at least to a significant degree. It comes down to whether you want to be a pretty corpse or not.
