Once he found the poster of the Musical, I started thinking about the game's story. Holy crap, I was really impressed how they translated it without just hamfisting it. It was a wonderful experience.
I was thinking that too considering the two main characters are also named Christine and Raoul and the fact that the antagonist is quite older than the female lead in the play. How the previous girl always got the part and Mr. Phantom had to step in. Now Amy is getting said burnt flowers and I am guessing Mr. Crane has a burn covering half of his face after the fire.
So, essentially Mr. Crane lived out his version of the Phantom of the Opera. And his "spotlight" could kill you like it did Chrissy and the kids. You Fear the Spotlight because it brings nothing but death and destruction, like it did to anyone who got in the way of his "love".. So many levels to this story.
The girls leaving the candles burning at the end gave me so much anxiety, did they learn nothing?? 😅 This story had so many twists and so many of them were dark! Great game and gameplay!
An interesting take on Phantom of the Opera with a few twists! Names are even the same (Chrissy vs Christine). The dressing room with the mirror. Crane living in the sewers beneath the school (theatre). That said, it was a bit disturbing as a teacher going after a student and murdering another... but thankfully, not too in-your-face IE games like Outlast II with the priest and Jessica, I think her name was. I do agree that it would've been really cool to see some visions of the scenes playing out rather than finding notes, but at least the notes weren't 500 pages long and an absolute slog to read through. I don't think you started the fire, though. When Chrissy came out screaming for help, Crane probably flipped and had to kill her to protect himself from the law. A large, electrical (or even candlelit) chandelier crashing to the stage would probably cause things to light up, especially considering stages are typically wood and cloth, predominantly. All in all, a great game and a great playthrough!
I think they didn't do visions because that would mess up, what I think, the post-credits twist was. They kept it in writing to disconnect the player enough from what could possibly be a major thing that wasn't clearly defined after the credits. I think visions mostly pull you out of the current environment into something else, which could potentially change the mood we gained from this whole experience. Its a similar concept to how Half-Life changed first person gaming by not taking the player away from the gameplay to tell its story. Here, they wanted to keep you firmly in the realm you are residing in. Any other way could potentially take it right out of that and mess up the shock factor of the twists.
‼️ 25:39 the quote from that gravestone is from the famous book Lolita! And I think we all know what that books about. That definitely adds a deeper subtext to this story.
This is hands-down one of the best plots I have seen in a horror game because the devs took the time to actually develop the story and the characters, and they gave it a fairly satisfying ending. I am really pleased because most games don't bother with giving the plot the depth and completion needed to make the games strong.
True, though many of the plot beats for everything except Viv and Amy's relationship, is a near-direct retelling of "Phantom of the Opera", just set in a modern time.
That was way darker than I expected, and I love how they wove Phantom of the Opera beats into it! Chrissy for Christine and we’ll Raoul. I wonder if Mr. Crane’s first name was “Eric.” When you found his little bunker with all those cameras? Gross. I’m really impressed this wasn’t just your run of the mill “avoid the monster” game. It had a compelling story that made me want to know what would happen next.
This was genuinely sweet and a great. Some of the notes could have been found and read or played out in cut scenes. I didn't notice them offhand but then I had you to read them for me. The story is dark but with a strong reason and relevance and nothing gets too graphic. I would really love for this to be one in a string. This stands toe to toe with legends my family has about strong spirits. The spirits become distorted and dangerous, causing death and dismemberment and even creating their own little pocket realms where they are far more powerful than i our world and they step through to our world during moments of strong memory to relive something and take a new life and once the spirit is snuffed out the pocket dimension collapses. This could be one story in a string of stories like that and I would love it, personally. Also, Megan is Missing is a VERY messed up and visceral movie and you can tell with me because I see it every time I see a barrel like that. I am right with you though. Crane bludgeoned that boy to death, burned him in the barrel, Chrissy found out and was going onto the stage to tell everyone, ran into Crane, and he dropped the chandelier on her to keep her quiet, killing everyone in that backstage area, including himself. Which is why he became a ghost. Or at least that's my take on it. Why all of it remained, why the school discovered that dungeon. The only thing I don't like is that the school kept it secret.
ok, 1:20:00 in and I LOVE this game! It seemed pretty good from the start, but the fact it was clearly inspired by Phantom of the Opera and takes so much inspiration from it is amazing. I'm sure most players wouldn't notice all the connections, but as someone who has grown up seeing the Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom both on film and on stage, this was really incredible seeing how much of it could be adapted into a haunted high school horror game. 100/10, so impressed!
This was actually a really cool story. It didn't go the way I thought. I didn't suspect the teacher until about half way through. This was a very well done game. I know it seems like a lot of reading, but it helps to build the story. In a good way. Good job devs!
"...a seance that goes horribly, horribly wrong." Okay, imagine a game where the seance actually is a positive. Like, you summon the soul of Freddie Mercury and he inhabits the body of a shitty person, changes their life around for the better, and forms another rock group. Or some unknown individual who was working on a cure for cancer is able to communicate from beyond and helps with a major treatment breakthrough.
2 hours of CJU!!! Awesome! The spotlight reminds me of a mix of the monster from Tape: Unveil the Memories and the Boys of Silence from Bioshock Infinite. That's a pretty cool combination 😊
*Two hours and 15 minutes*??! What have I done to deserve such a beauteous life? See you later, everyone; I've gotta see a man about a séance (gone wrong, apparently)... -- 2 1/2 hours later -- I liked it. Very linear, which is appropriate for a "low-impact" horror game (and I mean that in the nicest of ways). There were a lot of (nice and short) notes, which I appreciated because they made a complete story and school environment that added to the psychological horror aspects without being graphic for those too young to "get" just how disturbed Mr. Crane really was. I liked that the (two!) devs made the extra effort to place coherent story elements and relationships, even if Chris wasn't so much a fan. The puzzles were not too challenging of themselves, but rather they were "environmentally challenging" which kept the game low-impact and playable by more casual gamers perhaps tired of farming sims😄 . The enemy (or enemies at some points) ramped up nicely in 'difficulty to avoid' as the game progressed as well. This didn't quite make the gold standard of "cozy horror" like Dredge, but "low impact horror" is not a bad target to hit, and I think they did that. Thanks for playing and sharing, CJU !
At first, as usual, I was put off by this particular graphic style. It's just a me thing and Chris's narrations of games animated in this style have been slowly changing my mind. But the minute Vivian started turning her head to look at things she was just leaving, I was enamored. Her animation, her marvelous personality, the voice acting, the storyline, I loved every itty bitty pixel of it. Thanks for bringing this one to life for us, Chris!!
Fabulous game and play through! But as a theatre teacher I knew from the first secret admirer note that this game would give me a major case of the ick!
This might sound dramatic, but if I was only allowed to watch one TH-cam channel ever it would be yours! 😭🤚 I will now go and enjoy this extra long video as a treat, thank you for making them and being the way you are!
Its a little like the other game where the teacher was singing that creepy Little Lamb song with the girl. Someone worked it that the burnt rose made its way to Amy. Her obession with spiritism probably developed after the fire. She was the portal to the unresolved state of the school. The spirits of the kids, the girl and Raul probably need releasing. And there's the info about the predator teacher that was suppressed. Be interesting to see a part two if thats what the devs are going for.
Game was pretty good, I actually vaguely remember you playing the demo or whatever it was awhile back. As for the end: Spoiler I think that was just a librarian, lol. And no, I don't think you releasing the ropes somehow caused some time paradox shenanigans that caused the chandelier to fall on Chrissy.
Really nice "survival horror light" experience - and I don't mean that in a derogatory way in the slightest ! The puzzles seemed quite easy (for the most part) and there was a single, easily avoidable enemy (until the print room, that is). An engaging (if darker than I assumed) story and solid voice acting really helped make this an enjoyable experience ! I personally didn't mind the numerous but very short notes. As for the post-credit scene, I assume the adult is Superintendant Moore, who's probably one of the only person alive who actually knows the whole story, or most of it at least (but decided to keep quiet about it as to not crush the reputation of the school).
Kinda surprised but kinda ok with them not going for the cheap jumpscare of having the thingy fly down to "goodbye" on the ouija board at the very end there.
This is horror game done right! I loved both characters, the puzzles were logical and the progression in the story sooo good! Also very sickening. I remember seeing documentary what are parents capable to do to their children for the fame. Same goes how cruel kids can be like in this case at school. Not to mention stalking Crane - EWWW! Definitely fresh breath into horror genre (and I don´t like horrors at school that much) !
As a Phan (Phantom of the Opera fan), I saw the story coming as soon as they started talking about Phantom of the Opera (after the introduction of the roses), haha. Still, a nice modern retelling of the story. I also felt some Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with the escape towards the end. Thanks for playing this! It was a unique little game.
Vivian : Well , if some one can't focus because of a cool pair of boots , that's their own fault! ( posted this because it goes by so fast in this video , luckily I was able to stop the vid at the right time and read / get the text )
A good game. I would like to have seen more of the kids as to maybe them tahnking you for getting the truth out there. It is a shame after all that happened the school wanted to hide it all.
Love these long videos... Very good game, I liked how the ghost students peeked around stuff, made me jump a few times. Excellent commentary as always 😁 thanks for the entertainment Chris ♥️
Another wonderful gem found by you. I loved this one. A long video but I was definitely here for it. I usually don't have the time but this came at a perfect moment. Thank you CJU!!
Wow, what a solid game! Very PS2 like. Although short I think everything worked out pretty well. There was one moment where I saw heard the static from the TV, & my eyes were closed and then the static suddenly stopped...And in that moment I was momentarily spooked.
Perfect timing to watch your new video before bed ❤️ I love your long playthrough the best 😄 I've been binge watching all your older content. Thank you for your hard work and wonderful commentary ❤️
My husband found two kittens in the woods last night and we brought them home. They were very deprived and dirty. We fed and cleaned them, they looked like Siamese kitten twins, roughly a month old. The male passed away during the night… the female was rushed into emergency vet care and was saved and has been adopted out. Long story just to say… I really needed this video. Thank you Chris.
Thank you Chris, for all the content, for all the hard work, the enjoyment, and just for being you! Even if I don't comment on every video, TRUST me I'll always be watching!
I was hoping for a showdown between the ghost kids and Mr spotlight. I know it's a bit cliche but it would've been nice knowing that the ghosts got their revenge in the end.
Honestly same, however, because Vivian seems to still have the letter and envelope kind of gives me hope that she found a way to alert the authorities about what happened. 😢😩
Yay! Thank you for my evening’s entertainment. Two plus hours to watch. This was pretty good, fun to watch, great commentary. Loved that it was tied to Phantom of the Opera. FWIW, I think the lady at the end was the librarian, she just happened to have glasses like Vivian.
The way you missed the feet under the bathroom stall around the 27 minute mark had me screaming at the screen 😂. Great game, and it's so awesome to see super long plays from you!
This game also reminds me of an interesting view of "Phantom of the Opera". I also enjoyed the 2 hour gameplay. Although, I would enjoy anything you put together no matter how long it is. I do believe there might be a sequel. I'm guessing. Perhaps the teacher at the end was a ghost of a former teacher who wants to protect the reputation of the school.😊
this story got so damn dark. I was expecting some horror of a ghost haunting them and whatnot...but damn...fucking disgusting. But I think it really made the game much better. I felt bad for the burned students helping you like they just wanted someone to know the truth and perhaps get it out there.
That was pretty good! I had my kids watch it and then their friends watched it too!! I love your humor. Loved that it was one long video! Your great still. I was crazy to ever think anything different!
That was such a good game. A sweet romance between Viv and Amy, Phantom of the Opera references, a really interesting enemy design. I so hope they make more games :D
Between Vivian Singh and Erin from The Devil in Me, asthmatic nerdy girls that like other girls are stock characters just bubbling under full-blown archetype in video games.
Can't wait to watch this! I have a cold so this will make me feell better for sure, thank you in advance Chris! EDIT: I did like it but I also agree with CJUs nitpicks. But overall a nice game, thank you for the playthrough!
This is actually the first out of 6 games that Blumhouse (Yes THAT Blumhouse) is part of. They wanted to dip into games, but didn't want to make games based on their films. Also wanted to go the indie route. You'd never even guess this was Blumhouse. If you go to their website you can see a little about the rest of the 6 games they're making.
I wholly enjoyed this game and your playthrough of it! I make a lot of mistakes and so would have liked maybe one or two more inhalers for players like me lol, especially in that segment with finding the face pieces, VHS tape, etc. Otherwise the story unfolded really well! I thought it was priming us for a twist at the end like Heather coming back for revenge or something. But even just this by itself was a delight!
Could have done without the "gotcha" at the very end (whoever that lady is supposed to represent), but it's nice to have a little backstory on the coverup involving the superintendent and how the school was burnt to the ground and then rebuilt within those 2 decades.
Possible sequel? Who knows. It was a fun watch with some funny comments spread all around. I was reminded I hated that Megan movie so much when you mentioned it.
So the combination is "0-0-1"...? *Dark Helmet: That's the stupidest combination I ever heard in my life! That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!*
Leaving candles lit in the library!?¡¿ Also, not closing out the board with the planchet on goodbye!?¡¿ Just found you and I dig this playthrough and definitely am subbed.
I just noticed, Crissy, Raoul, the obsessed teacher, this is telling the story of a modern horror version of Phantom of the Opera!
Once he found the poster of the Musical, I started thinking about the game's story. Holy crap, I was really impressed how they translated it without just hamfisting it. It was a wonderful experience.

Absolutely
Exactly what i thought when they mentioned PotO and the name Raul. I'm not "no, they're not..."
I don't think I've seen a séance ever go this wrong.
You know what they say; "There's a first time for everything."
The item dropping in like mr.bean is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. Most people probably glazed over that part but that was comedy gold 🏆
Did you see the feet in the bathroom stall next to where you found the note about heather and raul?
Please play 12 minutes
@@kaybee126 I'm still waiting for him to play Night in the Woods.

I thought the same thing. Put those candles out!
oh me too! With the school having a history of a fire I thought for sure the candles were going to cause trouble
lol so many of us, united by the fear of burning candles...

High end schools will cover up anything that could slander their reputation just to keep parents coming to enroll their children into their campus
All the instances of bullying with a Stop Bullying campaign thing shown after was very much my school experience lol

I liked it.
Yay! Love your videos Chris! Love that you find unique, indie games to play.
A video over 2 hours from CJU instant like!! Love your content so much! Hope all is well ❤
Well I am with the rest of the comments. 2 hour CJU video oh yeah baby. Thank you very much Chris 👍👍👍
wow, i like the boss fight and the ending is so sweet 🥰
and the twist of course
Did you notice the piano keys spelled DEAD. Love those little touches!
That boss fight was so metal
That was really fun! Thank you for playing, CJU!
Ooh! This is a treat. This video will keep me entertained while I finish up work. Thanks, Chris!
just got home from work, cant wait to relax to a 2+ hour long vid 😅
Love the long videos, Chris! Thank you so much for all your time and effort!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Always gotten give my thanks when I see 2 hours like this🙏🙏🙏
I loved the game and the ending! So cute 💕 you could definitely tell how much they loved making it
That was such a good game. A sweet romance between Viv and Amy, Phantom of the Opera references, a really interesting enemy design. I so hope they make more games :D
Was really hoping the board was gonna move to goodbye at the end.
What a treat Chris! Thank you for the long play through!
As a huge PotO fan, this game made me happy in all the right ways. Ill be buying this game to support the dev. Really, really, enjoyed this!
Great story line👏👏, poor kids😭, bad teacher😡 happy ending 😍💞
Love the voice acting.
Between Vivian Singh and Erin from The Devil in Me, asthmatic nerdy girls that like other girls are stock characters just bubbling under full-blown archetype in video games.
they left the candles burning at the end 😬
Can't wait to watch this! I have a cold so this will make me feell better for sure, thank you in advance Chris!
EDIT: I did like it but I also agree with CJUs nitpicks. But overall a nice game, thank you for the playthrough!
Two hours? Ooooh this should be fun!
When I see you post my day gets instantly better. Very quality content, thank you 😊
I think that was probably Superintendent Moore on the end (2:12:16), also she looks very similar to one of the photos that died in the fire (6:05).
So the combination is "0-0-1"...?
*Dark Helmet: That's the stupidest combination I ever heard in my life! That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!*
Hi Chris will you play the new WW1 horror game - Ad Infinitum ?
I must admit ive been tiring of "low poly" styles but this is in a league of its own. Gorgeous. Great story. Was excited from the demo.
Yeah! Extra long sesh with CJU!
Leaving candles lit in the library!?¡¿
Also, not closing out the board with the planchet on goodbye!?¡¿
Just found you and I dig this playthrough and definitely am subbed.
Bit late to the party, but the piano notes are D-E-A-D. That's cheerful...
This was really good but I was extremely confused with the end of the video
2 hours?!? Whoohoo!! I know what I'm doing tonight 😁!
This was a fun watch, thanks Chris! 😊👍🏼
YUS the full game is here whooo *grabs some 🍿*
Scooby snacks made her hair grow.
2 hours of the most soothing voice ever, I love it
