Gebrselassie... so smooth and strong. This was one of Gebrselassie's strongest years on the track despite the trouble he had with injury in the early 2000's... but in 03' he came back really strong. His new fitness level provided an incredible setup for Ethiopia as a team because it meant Gebrselassie could draw out the pace and dominate the race early on.. indicating a sweep such as this one. Gebrselassie really turned on the fire and took one for the team here. What a great show. Grats Bekele.
Ha! I was in the Stade de France (great stadium) to watch this! It was a really hot summer, I'll never forget it. Life flies by, this was well over 13 years ago now...
The three were symbols of Ethiopian greatness on field and track events. There is no one to replace them . Eyes watering when i remember their golden time
@Perivei never mind what i say ur fan of bekele and im with El G they both done very good job in the track and bekele still on the track coz his young and El G retired coz he get what he wants from there and his a legend .
Hichame beat Bekele in 2004. There is no way he would have beat him in 2008. Bekele injected a totally different strategy. No mistakes in 2008 at the Beijing olympics.
The English version for this race was good/ exciting. If you want funny, see the 5000m french commentary at this same championships (ES EXTRORDNAIRE!!! EXTRORNAIRE!!!!)
@M3anDAD There are several 1500m world record holders who were then able to add the 5000m world record to their resumes. Said Aouita is the most glaring example of late. Otherwise I agree with you: the 5000m WR was a bit beyond El G's reach.
SALUT . POUR MOI , LEVER TRÈS HAUT LE CHAPEAU À L'ÉQUIPE ÉTHIOPIENNE ( FÉMININE ET MASCULINE ) EST UN DEVOIR . FABULEUSE , ELLE ÉTAIT . ( FROM ZINEB FHADER ) .
In these same championships, Bekele led through the opening 2 kilometers in 5:06 (2:31.8 for the first, 2:34.x for the 2nd); that didn't prevent El G from taking second ahead of Bekele. Bekele hasn't beaten El G at 5000m.
@Perivei lol so u say he was injured on 2003 and 2004 and btw if he was injured how he won the 10000m olympics in 2004 and btw he el Guerrouj is unstoppable and king of middle distance and see bekele and hicham trying to break 3000m WR hicham get better time then bekele and on 2000m for bekele and hicham see the times hicham get better and because of hicham most of the runners got better timeing in 1500m and 1 mile and when he join any race other runners race for 2nd
@Perivei el Guerrouj didnt train for 5000m if he train for 5000m he would get the 5000m WR easy and better time it was his 1st and 2nd race in both he beat and kickout bekele ^_^
These brothers looked so graceful. They knew how to put on a show!!!
Big Up Ethiopia!!

Dire que 13 ans plus tard, Bekele a signé à Berlin la 2ème meilleure performance mondiale de l'histoire du marathon. Cet homme est extraordinaire !
the show at the final 2 or 3 lap seems choreographed. And the amazing thing is haile didn't even tried to hard when Kenenisa sprints. respect

Yeah, it's a pity the English version is now gone- I remember the lines "The emperor is beaten, we're going to have a new king from Ethiopia."
