I had the good fortune to know RLs mother and sister Vera, I attended the same Methodist church in Manchester. I also spent many happy hours in the Free Trade Hall listening to Richard singing the tenor part in "Messiah" and the "Dream of Gerontius" under Barbirolli. Richard made the role of Gerontius his own. He was then, and always will be, my favourite tenor. In MY opinion nobody sang these two works better than he did. I have recordings of him in both (I also have his book "There will I sing". He is part of my musical education. I will never forget his wonderful performances.

Didn't know Alexander Young had recorded Fuor del Mar!!! Did he sing the whole role? I wonder where one can track down a copy??

RL did not excel in florid music. But he was capable of the purest tone and the most beautiful expression in other music like say Tamino.

Quite simply, this great singer here is clearly past his prime.

Pity we cant hear Alexander (Basil) Young sing this aria he recorded I belive when he was 64 excellent - wish i could get hold of it. I think RL was one of the most overrated tenors
