I disagree with Shermer. Natural selection selects for those that assume the rustling in the grass is a predator not because that is the assumption that is "right" more often, but because that is the assumption that increases the likelihood of survival. The rustling in the grass is probably only a real threat to survival a relatively low percentage of the time. Most of the time it really is just going to be the wind or a non-predatory animal or something else that's not a threat. Those that assume the rustling isn't a threat would be "right" a higher percentage of the time, but they would die out much more quickly than those that assume the opposite. So no, natural selection does not favor "seeing reality as it is".

truth is an illusion invented by the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which has been put together by the past conditioning of the brain. truth is your truth. The complete and utter end of the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which is an illusion invented by the past conditioning of the brain, is the beginning of Truth for the very first time, in each and every moment of daily life. There is no my Truth or your Truth. Truth belongs to No One. Truth is an energy beyond matter, but can act upon matter. Only this energy can bring Order to thought, which is a materialistic process of the brain.
Total Enlightenment is actually being Totally Free of fear, anxiety, suffering, confusion, alienation, addictions, envy, greed, jealousy, pride, anger, hatred, violence, bias, and prejudice in daily life, once and for all, now forever. Totally Free of beliefs, philosophies, ideologies, theories, opinions, perspectives, biases, prejudices, nationality, and identifications, which limit, color, shape & distort Perception, and therefore, prevent Lucidity. Totally Free of the I, the me, the self, the observer, the chooser, the experiencer, the interpreter, and the so-called True or Higher Self, which is the invention of the past conditioning of the brain, which acts like an inner tyrant who tells you what to think, how to feel, and what to do. They who are Totally Enlightened actually treat everyone, without exception, with the same intensity and quality of care and affection that they would give their dearest closest friend, lover, or child, without any sense of division, separation or distance in daily life, once and for all, now forever. Total Enlightenment is actually Living Love, Peace, Joy, Truth, Creativity, Compassion (Passion for All). Communicating, Communing, Connecting with everyone and everything, in each and every moment of daily life.
Enlightenment does not take time. It is not of time. It is not the result of time or the things of time. It is not the result of any method, ritual, or diet. It is not the result of any chemical. It is not the result of any process. There is no path to it. It happens effortlessly and choicelessly...faster than the speed of light. Moreover, it is once and for all, now and forever.
Dude wtf I came to university to learn. They gave me a homework whether if there is an absolute or relative truth and now my existential dread and crisis has worsened
@Bombay Boy Certainly not! Kṛṣṇa means Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Allah is a vague misconception of God, and Jesus does not qualify at all. For example, the Personality of Godhead does not suffer, whereas Jesus is famous for suffering. The absolute is not different from His real names. The meanings of Sanskrit words are definite, based on the rules of grammar applied in context. Sanskrit is perfectly crafted, not a mundane language like English. Kṛṣṇa means full of truth and bliss, all-attractive, and having a gorgeous blackish form.
@Bombay Boy The religions of meat eaters are demoniac. Do you think people who eat cows are following a true religion? Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said cow-killers rot in hellish life for as many thousands of years as there are hairs on the body of the cow. ( vedabase.io/en/library/cc/adi/17/166/ ) I don't believe it is actually kind to people to pretend their nonsense beliefs are religious. Before I learned anything about Kṛṣṇa, I was a university student majoring in Environmental Studies and learned meat production takes between ten and a hundred times the amount of resources used for growing vegetarian foods. Since people typically get about 20% of calories from meat, I knew vegetarian diets can feed twice as many people. Now that the human population quadrupled in the past century, the Earth's climate stability is being dangerously disrupted by human behavior, and people's addiction to meat is arguably driving it. Now that the routinely brutal treatment of animals is threatening to end the world, my patience for meat eaters claiming to be religious is over. I have more respect for the animals they consume.
@Bombay Boy My impression is regular people who routinely eat meat care about people and pets, but they ignore what they are doing to animals raised for food. People do not usually seem at even a little demoniac when I interact with them, and I don't like thinking of people that way. However, politeness is a poor substitute for moral integrity. The world has become like hell for most animals because the predominant religions incoherently allege animals have no soul. Now the ugra-karma from this abuse is threatening to consume the world. Even COVID-19 is reportedly brought to humans by people's meat consumption. I just really think it's past time for the religions of meat eaters to admit they were wrong, and I'm saying it since they won't.
Don't know where I read this: Disciple: "O Master, what is the Truth behind this world and how can I know it?". Master: "My dear, YOU are the Truth that you seek. Since you are already you, there is no knowing."
Food for Thought 👍👍 But, questions can never end... a) If You find the most/last fundamental particle... the very next question will be..."From where this last fundamental particle came?" b) If You find God... the very next question will be..."From where God came?" c) If You say this last fundamental particle/God existed always.... the next questions will be... "Who/Which rule decided that the God is to be good/powerful/one etc. (Why not many Gods/less powerful God/evil God)" "Which rule decided that the last fundamental particle will have these properties only, which it will possess...why not some different properties?" "How can an immaterial God make something material? What is the process behind this conversion?" What is the energy source of an immaterial thing by which it can sustain? etc. etc. Therefore in spirituality/Yoga they say that we should focus on achieving Supreme Happiness (Happiness/Bliss that never goes away). Even if we find everything in the universe, ultimately we will achieve satisfaction/happiness. So, they say don't give much importance to knowledge (because questions can never end)...but give importance to the path which leads you to a state of default/supreme happiness, which once achieved never ever goes away.. God is nothing but this state. Once we achieve this state, they say, we are no different from God...then, we become God.
Truth is whatYOU find it. Indians used to think wisdom is an elephant among the blind. All the blind will have to touch the elephant to find out what is.
Is anything in nature false? No. True and false concepts are indigenous to the mind; the mind is a pattern recognition system. Logic is a pattern of human thought.
I agree. Impossible things cannot exist and we don't see them in nature. Only things that are possible exist. And anything true is also possible and if it collapses into 4 dimensional reality it is true. But in the metaphysical world impossibility exists and something possible can also be false. Although personally I think mind is separate from brain. Mind is the only thing that can be false and think of impossible things, and that doesn't seem natural when everything else in the universe dare I say "behaves" logically, and is inherently true.
The absolute Truth is: no discrepancy between the reality itself and our picture of the reality. We differ in our beliefs and opinions which means some of us are closer to the Truth then others. Since the reality is to complex to get a ful knowledge about it during one's life span, probably noone can ever know the ultimate Truth. On the other hand, it's not so terribly difficult to come quite close to the truth about some important fragments of the reality. The reason why so many people fail is, they are not really interested in finding the objective truth, because it always goes along with sacrifices. They search for and accept the Truth only to the point when they stil don't need to sacrifice anything - like almost all of the scientists interviewed in this video. One simple example: in discussions one is concentrating rather on defending one's own position then on analysing the position of the counterpart. (Indeed, there is not enough time for the analysis therefore a discussion is never a good way of searching for the Truth). Even when it's obvious then the conterpart is right one tries to make the own "defeat" less bitter through some linguistic tactics which all together bring us farther back from knowing the Truth. The first thing which has to be sacrificed in discussions is one's own pride.
I think the more important question is to what purpose? Knowing absolute truth would do what? Inform your decisions? Allow you superior health? Wealth? The capability, and consequent satisfaction, of resolving outstanding questions in science and mathematics? All these things require a profound understanding, an expertise, not a pristine clarity of certainty. That very concept is chimerical, except as it relates to knowledge.
_There is only one _*_lying being_*_ in the world, and it is man. _*_Every other being_*_ is _*_true_*_ and _*_sincere_*_ presenting itself _*_truthfully, exactly as what it is_*_ , and expresses itself _*_openly, and exactly how it feels_* Schopenhauer
Under the opinion that facts can, may, and do change, then beneath the reasoning of mathematics, 1 + 1 = 2 demonstrates the existence of absolute truth. So, under this premise, one can say facts change and truth is constant.
Ultimate Truth is a Person. In Him All things come together. He said: I am the Way, Truth and Life. Un changeable and highest of all. Jesus Christ is Truth !!!
simple basic definition of truth: I exist, without your existing nothing could be known. Truth isn't an object, it's something understood. You could say truth is knowing or realizing that which is true,
If you lose something here and then look for it somewhere else for the rest of your life, you can never find it. Truth is to be found in Faith which human being didn’t discover or invent but rather Faith was revealed to them through many Messengers of God. Theory of Revelation is beyond human reason and understanding; it has to be grasped through Faith only. Any philosophical questioning can't solve the riddle of this because Almighty Himself kept it aloof from human reach. If it could be proven so vividly, then there would be no athiests and no test of Faith as such. Faith is a choice. You choose it and you're saved. You reject it and you're damned to suffer and look for answers forever on a lonely desert. But I highly appreciate the sincerity of you quest, Mr Kuhn. Hope, God may guide you to Truth.
Everybody tells Robert that TRUTH is totally dependant on the observer and its interpretation, but he keeps on questioning. His truth will always be one of doubt and thanks to that this channel exists. There is one thing he hasn't tied up. The personal interpretation of truth is totally coherent with quantum fisics, the observer changes the observed.
Jesus said, He is the TRUTH, Truth is Unique, eternal and unchanging!! Jesus own words were the expression of TRUTH(Jesus himself) Truth must be equally true in the past, in the present and even in the future,.. Truth can also be equally true on the east, in the west, true in the north and even in south. example, the SUN always Rise from the EAST, is "truth" true in the past, present future, true in ghe east, true in the west, south and in the north, thats ABSoLuTE truth 😅🤣😅 Sometimes Truth Hurts, hahaha, because it exposes the lie we have been living, Truth unnerves us, challenges us, shakes us up , but the TRUTH will SET us FREE as Jesus said....The true Truth, .. But in this last days, What is LIE , people will believed it as Truth, and what is TRUTH , people will reject it and branded it as a LIE, ..its very confusing/Lie can disguise as truth, but truth can never LIE, but , i think, no matter how people will trick or twist the Truth, the truth itself will Prevail in due time...
(FACTS OVA FEELINGS). Wee have a Conditional Relationship with the Truth. Wee Only want Truth if it Makes Us Feel Moor Stable. ......... Wee Only want Truth if it Makes Us Feel Moor in Control. ....... Wee Only want Truth if it Makes Us Feel Good and this Conditional Relationship that wee have with the Truth will be hOUR DOWNFALL
The question isn’t exactly clear for me. Does he want to know the definition of the word or is he interested in the things to which the word can be applied ? Because he discovered at least three different meanings of the word in this video and doesn’t seem to be content with that. Each meaning of the word “truth” will point to different things. If he is trying to collapse all three meanings it is no wonder that he’s frustrated.
John Hicks is compelling: the ultimate truth is not rational. But it's not irrational either. It's a unique understanding of reality, not just a rational one but a deeply intuitive and bewildering one. The Tao Te Ching tries to bring it to us in an intuitive manner, Sufism also but in a passionate way and Jesus tried it in a loving way. The ultimate truth is an ultimate mystery occasionally perceived by some of us.
"Truth must be looked for...in levels of eternal reality. Material levels must be recognized as transient, partial and inferior. The events of time and struggles of existence are but transient scaffolding ...to reality." So comments the Urantia Book. (pp 364 & 1457-9)

As long as you periodically sift through your logical category hierarchy, searching for contradictions and modifying the structure of the categories... You will be getting.. closer to truth.
Thank God, I was born to Muslim parent, it is Islam the ultimate truth for Muslims.
I wish Rorty was still around, he'd be the one to visit !
I love the irony of Michael Shermer sitting next to a couple of issues of Skeptic magazine and to telling us about all the things that brains do.
One thing I know for sure is truth is not just someone's opinion ,if your opinion is questionable you do not have the truth.
Ultimate truth shall set you free
Truth is illuminating, but what do we do after knowing the truth is the biggest question.
Then the dancing begins.
@@projectmalus I like your statement. I hope I'll be dancing with my little friend.
There is truth and then there is Truth.
truth is an illusion invented by the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which has been put together by the past conditioning of the brain.
truth is your truth.
In truth, truth revolves around existence.
Dude wtf I came to university to learn. They gave me a homework whether if there is an absolute or relative truth and now my existential dread and crisis has worsened
Defining a word. A word we invented. Good luck.
Consciousness is truth
truth is what you know, and what you know is, what you experience, and what you observe through your own eyes truth or not the truth
Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate truth. Every reality depends on Kṛṣṇa.
Paul Howard fake news.
Correct
Food for Thought 👍👍
But, questions can never end...
a) If You find the most/last fundamental particle... the very next question will be..."From where this last fundamental particle came?"
b) If You find God... the very next question will be..."From where God came?"
c) If You say this last fundamental particle/God existed always.... the next questions will be...
"Who/Which rule decided that the God is to be good/powerful/one etc. (Why not many Gods/less powerful God/evil God)"
"Which rule decided that the last fundamental particle will have these properties only, which it will possess...why not some different properties?"
"How can an immaterial God make something material? What is the process behind this conversion?"
What is the energy source of an immaterial thing by which it can sustain?
etc.
Truth? You cannot have truth. Like Jesus said: I don't have the truth, I am truth!
Truth is whatYOU find it.
Indians used to think wisdom is an elephant among the blind. All the blind will have to touch the elephant to find out what is.
Yes, believing you have agency, a centre, is not a probableistic. ♥️
Truth is the will of Existance, a meaning.
How do you figure there is even such a thing as "will of Existance"
Truth is a serious stuff but also the truth cannot be devided ,, the truth is one and god is the ultimate truth
Truth is that which is realized to be true.
Truth as relative... I like to say truth as RELATIONAL.
Truth is more than one level...there are others
Truth is reality in time
I signed up when this was less than 1000 subscribers I'm sure. To see it into the 100 of thousands gives hope to the human race.... well a faint hope.
Amazing content
Truth is where you ignore the ego. Truth is sitting there.
"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!" - Jack Nicholson
Truth is that which is. No need to complicate it.
The truth I.S., a word, an image of our illusory way of Thinking
Is that... true? 🤔😵🤯
Under the opinion that facts can, may, and do change, then beneath the reasoning of mathematics, 1 + 1 = 2 demonstrates the existence of absolute truth. So, under this premise, one can say facts change and truth is constant.
“The truth is that which runs after truth.” -Lacan
Truth is whatever you find to be the most convincing argument. However, truth, is simply your attempt at a convincing argument.
The truth is the congruence of thought with reality, and knowledge of congruence means, the knowledge of the truth.
You could say truth is knowing or realizing that which is true.
@@williamburts5495 Yes 🎉
Truth that which comports with reality. Opinions is another thing
Ultimate Truth is a Person. In Him All things come together. He said: I am the Way, Truth and Life. Un changeable and highest of all. Jesus Christ is Truth !!!
If I am honest I do not deny the truth. Even so, as it stands right now I do not know what it is.
simple basic definition of truth: I exist, without your existing nothing could be known.
Truth is what works, but what works is not necessarily the truth.

“Saying of that which is that it is and of that which is not that it is not”. Aristotle

Truth stands in causal relations and since an infinite regress is not possible, then there has to be an ultimate foundation for truth. Which Is God.
Truth is what is
The ultimate truth is that my bank account has $348.66
Honesty is the ultimate truth.
you may honestly say that you saw two person(although that was illusion)
but then is your saying the Truth ?
True is that wat demonstrably is the same for every person.
I agree with Peterson, truth is a call to action.

It is true that my wife lives with me.
This truth is inescapable.
Truth encompasses everything, even lies. So yes, what is truth exactly?
Jesus said, He is the TRUTH,
Truth is Unique, eternal and unchanging!!
Jesus own words were the expression of TRUTH(Jesus himself)
Truth must be equally true in the past, in the present and even in the future,..
Truth can also be equally true on the east, in the west, true in the north and even in south.
example, the SUN always Rise from the EAST,
is "truth" true in the past, present future, true in ghe east, true in the west, south and in the north, thats ABSoLuTE truth 😅🤣😅
Sometimes Truth Hurts,
hahaha, because it exposes the lie we have been living,
Truth unnerves us, challenges us, shakes us up , but the TRUTH will SET us FREE as Jesus said....The true Truth,
..
The claim that there is no single overarching truth is itself a single overarching truth, so the claim is self-refuting.
A question is truth.
Hey Thor.... That's good to hear because I have lots of questions!
Truth is the structure of what is.....and it seems to speak to me just a tantalising little bit beyond my periphary of perception.
There is only Truth everything is true even when it is not.
Great. More people ought to practice the truth sometimes.
30 minutes to ask 1 simple question and conclude ,we are limited by uncertainty
It is true that A equals A.

It is true that it is true that it is true that A equals A.
