The Both: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Singer-songwriters Aimee Mann and Ted Leo are often at opposite ends of the volume knob. But what started as separate sets during a mutual tour, then a few walk-ons during Leo's solo set, is now an adventure in collaboration and mutual songwriting - and the birth of The Both. Months after this Tiny Desk Concert, which we recorded in February, there's an album. For the announcement of that record, Leo said, "The writing process has largely been long-distance, but it's been line by line, verse by verse, part by part; we'll send each other something and go back and forth until it's finished."
When they showed up to play together at the Tiny Desk, there was a lot of uncertainty and a sense of adventure. The performances weren't about perfection so much as inspiration, with Mann rocking a bit more and Leo hunting for subtlety in his guitar playing. It wasn't compromise, though, so much as a creative challenge that's unfolding during this set - one of their earliest public performances of these songs. It's fascinating to watch them sing in uncharted territory. --BOB BOILEN

Yeeeessssss
Oh wow, when Aimee's voice starts you just melt.
I love Aimee too, she's exquisite, but can we see some more love for Ted? His voice, his range is astounding, and he's an amazing guitar player, way underrated. If you don't know his solo work, check out anything from The Tyranny of Distance on...
Douglas Stephens I heard them live, more than a year and a half ago, somewhere over half a year prior to this video. It was actually during her tour, and he opened. Ted also joined in on a couple songs in her set. He was just bloody terrible. Sucked the vitality out everything he touched -- instantaneously. Their voices don't meld, they're not on the same sphere in the way they feel time, and the songs where he performs alone are like oatmeal without raisins or cinnamon. And undercooked. And if you pick up on all the cues in this video, you can see that the whole thing is already in tatters. There is a yawning void when it comes to musical or interpersonal chemistry between the two of them. He's flailing, "why is this going wrong," wondering if it is fixable. Poor guy.
bminorscales awwww dude! I'm sad because you definitely nailed it, and I've loved both of these artists in their own worlds. Also, I had oatmeal without raisins today and now this makes me cry.
Ted is not as good as Aimee.
@@bminorscales You know you're allowed to not like something without it indicating some great internal conflict on the part of the thing you didn't like, right? I didn't hear anything remotely like what you described in this set and although both were great I thought Ted stole the show if anything.
Ted Leo's album Shake The Sheets is the best one though....
These two are great together. I never would have imagined this but it makes total sense
The rapport between these two musicians is amazing, I love this!
Greater than the sum of the parts. Like John C Reilly & Will Ferrell. Well, not exactly like them.
I am sitting here with two dogs gently resting listening to The Both. That is quality man.
After discovering this a month ago, I keep coming back. As good as it gets.
You know who’d make a great Tiny Desk concert? Rebecca Sugar.
familyfunny YASSSSSS
You know who's made a great Tiny Desk concert? The Both.
Who would have thought their voices sound so damn good together?
Guess these two are independent together

I really loved the album they did together. I saw them at folk fest in winnipeg and I've seen Aimee play on her own and with other artists. They have fantastic on stage chemistry. And they're both really sweet people. I've been a fan of Aimee and her music for a while. But I really loved what these two did musically. I love that Aimee went back to bass and how ted uses all semi hollow electrics. It all worked so well together. And to be fair, performing a rock album sort of acoustically, with electric instruments (I know. A contradiction) in a tiny store with no drummer, they did a fantastic job. Always great to see both of them live. Just amazing musicians and people.
Unexpected but beautiful meeting of minds and hearts......love and peace
Don’t you just love it when the two sides of your brain meet?
Her voice really carries!
🙄
Anything Aimee Mann does is great. This is even better than that
...so very much heart and soul.
Who else came here because their song from the Steven Universe Movie was stick in their head 😹
Sometimes this really cool thing happens when you get older. A song you heard when you were much younger which you paid _no attention_ to back then pops into your head and it gets stuck there. Thanks to the internet, you can look that song up and listen to it. For me, the song was "Voices Carry." I looked that up a little while back and I've been really enjoying Aimee Mann for a little while now.
My favorite thing about Aimee is the feeling she puts in her songs.
For the song "Labrador" They recreated the "voices carry" video shot for shot with ted in the band.
@@elbowache - Who?
Are you referring to The Both, 'Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann solo, or some other group of musicians with Aimee Mann?
Never mind. I found it.
and Ted's Guild sounds perfect like the joined vocals, ty!
Saw The Both live and the feelings... indescribable.
WHAT AN AWESOME CALABORATION! Love it!
This is great
I love all of the both sounds and songs
especially Ted's guitar sounds.
this time I can hear his overdrive guitar sound mixed with dry unplugged sounds.
his and her vocals ,chorus and melodic bass. it is just too good.
I love both of The Both.
I love the Both of them. Yes.
Just puts ya in a good mood!
I just got this album. It is brilliant.
Magnifique ! Merci !
He brings an inquisitive guitar to the mix. It is great and outstanding at the same time.
Aimee Mann. Quality :)
Ted Leo full voice and exceptional playing has me believing Aimee plays better when such a strong player is near her. THE BOTH is such a telling name that agrees with my kind of Imagination. Talents in people, their minds and feelings are noticeable in this music. Study the beginnings in to do list for these two. 🐬
Talking to yourself again, huh? Shut up and listen to the music because saying "better" makes the bleeding liberals squeak and cringe with excitement. lol . Forget about it. The States far exceed anyone or anybody in London. 🐬

Sheer Delight, love this sound, great "band", nice performance.
Album of the year
Could we have another album by The Both? It's Time! :) Aloha from Hawaii
at 7:00, Leo hunting for subtlety in his guitar playing
Brazil here with me?!
Great!!!
Bravo!
素敵すぎる、、
They're both so fucking talented.
Sweet!
these guys are cool.
I know niether but Ted's voice is great
Oh hey i didnt know steg and opal had second forms
"No Sir" is another - should have been a hit song!
Has that lemuria logo always been there?! I discovered Lemuria when I saw them open for The Both! Brilliant power pop.
dream crushing
Jesus, what a bunch of talent.
Milwaukee's coming back baby!
❤❤❤
We got opal and Steg here
My only note is that I wish the Bass was turned up higher. Love the songs, great mix of two great underrated talents..
As a bassist I fully support this comment 😂 bass is often not set loud enough in live performances and it’s really tragic sometimes because we’re always laying down the groove. But on this video the volume gets more even between them as time goes on maybe she was just playing quietly on the first song. This was a really cool tiny desk I enjoyed it a lot
sweet dreams!
Music is best.
Aimee! Aimee? Save me.
"I went over the bridge in Milwaukee,"
Hey I did that the other day!
man, that slight growl guitar tone in the opening track sounds awesome. What settings and amp can get that sound?
The sixties are back in.
Her voice is good in these circumstances
Two microphones? Their voices blend very well.
I hope this isn't a one time thing, hopefully a new album is in the works
If only it could be.
i wonder if it was comedy that brought them together, since they are both friends with a lot of comedians and sometimes even participate...
😊
I wonder what he used for an amp? sounds great !
At the beginning, you can catch a glimpse of it. Looks to be a newer Epiphone combo. Pretty cool.
I love her voice. She looks really great too. She must be over 50 now.
62 now
steven universe brought me here
DapperDevNull shut up
@@whitevan7705 dont like ur own comment (;
Anyone else know these two before Steven Universe?
I've known them independently, not together
I love that Amy plays fingerpicked bass, that’s so rare in guitar players. I personally find it supremely awkward because of all the picking muscle memory. I imagine it’s bc she played bass first
Oh Aimee..
Steg played guitar
And opal played bass
Just like their real life counter parts
This is bucketfuls of too much awesome. Is it wrong that I like this audio mix more than the album?
Aimee's all right. Ted's okay too.
Americana Aimee
wasn't aimee mann on some buffy episodes back in the day?
Yes.
Sounds great, but am I the only one who can't get past the 360p quality?
I got 1080.
That's just TH-cam's flawed application of DASH playback. If you have more problems with it, might I suggest trying the TH-cam Center extension. Eliminates DASH playback (though limits streaming quality to 720p, thank TH-cam for that), so it doesn't have problems changing resolutions. It also allows the full video to buffer too.
First. World. Problems.
Note to self: Guild through an Epiphone...
Save me...
You're a gambler in need
A gamble, indeed...
I think it was overall pretty good, I just think some of the solos could have used a little work, but all in all enjoyable from both parts of The Both.
Ted Leo is one of the founders of screamo music.
it's like she's playing with Mr rogers, "won't you be my neighbor "
No sir; simon and garfunkel have nothing on these two.
Really, vocally they might hold a candle but instrumentally Not so much.
@James Adlington, you took up a lot of space for nothing! Wasteful!
I've been a fan of Aimee for a long time. Please make this guy stop playing with her.
Ted is a legend, bro. I never listened to Aimee's music before she started playing with Ted, but I think they sound great together, and the music they produce together has more depth than when they are separate.
Hahaha. Give it a chance. The album is great. I've loved Aimee for years but I've also been a fan of Ted Leo for a long time too. Their album is great. Plus, you'll also get more solo albums from Mann in the future...
If anyone is dead weight here, it's her, dude.
please stop the either or motherfuckers.
Jim1971a this is a dumb comment
This is not cool the dude sucks
Bravo !
