The reason you haven't heard of them much is that they made themselves the poster boys of 70s excess and they paid for it with their careers.

Their first radio hit was Lucky Man. Other radio hits include Karn Evil 9: First Impression Part 2; Still... You Turn Me On; their covers of the Peter Gunn theme, Fanfare For The Common Man, and Hoedown.
I recommend listening to ANYTHING off their first, eponymous album, and especially The Barbarian, Take A Pebble, and Knife Edge (as well as the aforementioned Lucky Man). Also, anything off Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery.
Roundabout was released in November of '71; From The Beginning was a little more than half year later, July of '72, and was recorded roughly at the time Roundabout was getting airplay.

True, Carl Palmer was as good as anybody on drums and Keith Emerson was as good as anybody on keyboards -- but ELP owes its success to criminally underrated bassist, acoustic and electric guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist extraordinaire Greg Lake. Greg wrote all the ELP songs with vocals and even helped Keith with some of his musical interpretations. He was essential to the most talented trio of all time.

"I can't believe they're not more famous" - you young un's, eh!! In their heyday ELP were enormous; one of the biggest bands on the planet. But it's nice that you are getting into music from the 70s. My 30 year old son has been working from home during lockdown and I've been feeding him a daily diet of music recommendations from my youth and he has been amazed at how good the music from then was. Happy listening.

Yesemite Sam Yes I am a Boomer in my 60s and even these 30 somethings that do these reactions marvel at that . One asked “ What is it about those guitars that sounded so good back then ? “ The essence of it is as one Boomer commented to a young Reactor , “ You have got to understand that great quality music that blew your mind was a normal, regular thing back then ! “. Now in the You Tube age and even in the early 90s I would discover gems like Forever Changes by Love and Nick Drake’s work that I was previously unaware of . The other day an LP called Afreaka by the group Demon Fuzz came up . Afreaka is a Masterpiece. Google ‘s recommendation list really isn’t doing this . The gods of music and music lovers are doing it . That was what was said about Forever Changes by Love . You don’t find it . It finds you

I grew up in the 60s-70s in SE Virginia, listening to WMYK (K94), an album rock station. Everybody I knew, knew ELP, but I don't remember them having a lot of airplay songs. The top40 stations didn't play them a lot, with the exception of the very few listed in these comments. They weren't all "danceable", or maybe too long or too complex...

"What?", you ask. That, my friends, is a Moog synthesizer. Keith Emerson was one of the first performers to explore the many strange and wonderful sounds to be had from a synthesizer, and that was one of the innovations that made ELP an early leader in the progressive rock movement. This stuff was mind-blowing in the early '70s. You should probably do "Lucky Man" next. I am guessing it is the "epic" song you have been hearing about, and it does indeed have a very epic feel to it. It is not their best song, and I say that because, IMO, you just heard their best song, but it is a great one. It has that whole mind-blowing thing going on, but "Lucky Man" does it in a much bigger way. You don't sit up and say "What?" for "Lucky Man", you just let your jaw hang open and drool a little bit.

I LOVE that you guys and others doing reactions are getting into the music that I grew up with. See, I graduated HS in '72 and a lot of us were listening to freeform FM radio then, stations like WNEW-FM out of NYC, where dj's could basically spin up and talk about any music they wanted to which meant we'd hear things like ELP first before they would become generally popular and we'd be at the record stores the next day looking for the albums. Like it or not, streaming's killed the rock music biz to the point where creativity not only takes a back seat to posers, but it's been shoved down the sewer hole, so it's killer that newer gens like you are able to show their appreciation for the good stuff. Rock on Garth!

I’m with you on the late 60’s and 70’s. But 80’s? Maybe the extreme early 80’s as some of the classic rock stuff was still winding down. But most of the 80’s was crap except for some indie stuff, the beginnings of alternative rock. But the rest was just pop crap. Even the hair metal was pop and all sounded the same. But the metal girls though, dayum!!!

"Roundabout" appeared 1971, this was 1972. Gregg Lake was a guitarist turned to bassist who came around with King Crimson as bassist singer, leaving after the "In The Court Of Crimson King" album.
Please react to "The Only Way" from the B-side of the album "Tarkus". While the "Tarkus" is The Piece, "The Ony Way" is bit of a hidden gem with piano, bass, drums and vocals and some church organ in the first part. :)
Edit. Synth buffs, there are instructions how to get that sound, search tube with moog filter resonance :)
