Thanks Shane. Great video and great channel! The code doesn’t seem to be working for me. I assume this code is supposed to work with your affiliate link?
YES, I am so glad Aqara made this, I was looking for smart lock and I was going to go with the Yale Linus, since it still allows the use of original keys. Now I have more options.
Apple Home Key and Matter over Thread is like a dream combo. It is funny how it took so long for more than 2 Apple Home Key locks to come out and then CES this year made it clear that 2024 was going to change all of that. Thus far, reality has actually kept pace with the hype. Aqara alone now has three Apple Home Key locks. Great review, as always.
Shane, I was excited to hear your review of the product! As an European user the best current solution for us is the Nuki that it’s very expensive I’m highly excited to finally use Apple Homekey!
Amazing timing. I’ve been following this product for months, since we’re moving to a new house next week, and we wanted smart locks. We were going to go with the Yale Linus, which has less features, but with this timing? Instant buy. Thanks a lot for the discount code! 🎉
Purchased this lock and it was great, as my Australian lock was not compatiable I simply purchased a replacement Euro Mortice and Tumbler and that fitted right in allowed a simple install. The only small thing I had to do was when linking to Apple home I had to go into the Aqara app and enable the matter pairing on the lock before Apple Home found the lock on matter.
Good to see them listening to users. My favorite feature without testing it is the ability to disable the auto lock. I love having it, but it can be annoying when taking out the trash.
Yes! I agree. As someone who has used auto lock on one of my other locks (without the disable feature) for a long time, this is a great feature to have.
Great review. Tempting. Have you had any “No Response” issues in Apple Home? That’s the only thing that would scare me if Thread flakes then you would lose automation/scene/remote control. Does the M3 hub only communicate with it via thread? With the Schlage Encode + if Thread goes No Response I can still control it via the Schlage app over WiFi.
Thanks Terry. I have not had any connection issues so far. Of course, you'll want to be sure you have a solid thread network for a good connection. The U200 also connects via Bluetooth. In theory, I would think that it would connect via bluetooth to a hub in the event that your thread network goes down or has issues like other HomeKit thread accessories, but I am not certain as I was not able to test that.
I wish Schlage would have followed suit with their Encode Plus to support MoT but this said, it uses Thread and wow power consumption is almost nil:: installed it end of Nov 2023 and its still at 100% battery! The U200 looks great and would def. look at I if I had to buy another smartlock. Great overview, Shane. thanks.
I bout this lock after watching your video. So far I’m really happy. It’s much more responsive than the August lock I was using before. And my battery is still at 100% after a week where as my old August would require a battery replacement like every 6 weeks. And the Aqara has a rechargeable battery! only thing is I missed the promo code so didn’t get the 20> discount. Thanks Shane for the video.
Which august lock did you have? I have an August WiFi lock. It’s not bad, but because of its location I think the battery drains faster than average. After having used it for a while, what do you think of the Aqara lock now?
Glad you were able to discuss something with Aqara. I got the lock and the diy installation was a challenge that could have been overcome quickly if there was any way to get tech support. Aside from Apple and a few exceptions tech support is going extinct. But for a smart lock (or thermostat or whatever) this is a bad idea. Normal people don't want to add $200+ on the price to hire a locksmith. And when the fix is easy and a call could do the trick it's very annoying.
Another great video Shane thanks! I ordered on Kickstarter and had the same issue as you with the adapter and the lock failed. Amara did get me a new lock with a new version of the adapter and it worked. I always appreciate your fair and even reviews. I have also had some connectivity issues with HomeKit, but they are intermittent. Hoping the hiccups get worked out via updates here soon. Thanks again!
Yes!!!!!!! Throwing my level in the trash!!!! I have an east facing door in AZ! Sun cooks all but the level locks, but level now got bought out and never activated thread. Eff them!
So what happens when temperatures are colder than -18C - I'm in Canada and we get to -30C, does that mean we end up locked out during our cold times if the keypad only works to -18?
Hi Shane another great video. I have never used matter as all my devices are Apple HomeKit. Do I need to use matter to connect the U200 to my smart home or can I connect like all my other devices?
While still watching the video, I wonder if the inside part can be mounted upside down. I got the lock where you can turn the key inside / outside independently, but the door handle on mine is below and lock, and not as the examples, above. My door locks in 3 places (top and bottom pales + where cylinder is) when the handle is moved up, which is needed in order to turn the key to lock the cylinder. Anyway not far enough I think if mounting the inside part with turn knob at top.
My deadbolt (US) is underneath the doorknob instead of above it. I'm concerned about clearance... From all the videos and references I see, it's installed above the doorknob, Aqara lever side down. Can we install it "upside down", with the Aqara lever side up for the US deadbolt?
Hey Shane! Perfect and informative video, as always!! Thanks for that! I do have two questions: 1. I'm currently using Nuki Pro 3.0 and considering an upgrade to this Aqara U200 lock, mainly since my Nuki battery is running dry and because of the Phone Key of course. In Nuki, I have a feature to set up a radius in which when I enter it, the lock gets into an auto-unlock mode, waiting for to get within bluetooth range, then it unlocks the door - Does Aqara have a similar feature? 2. This question is more related to the Aqara door sensor - while I know you mentioned that there is some sort of beta feature which uses the lock's internal gyroscope to determine whether the door is closed or not - if I still wish to use the official Aqara door sensor - must I get the Aqara hum for this or using Apple's Home app in enough? Again, thanks a lot!!
Does it only unlock the door? Or can it open it as well (I mean the quarter key turn after unlocking)? That is a big difference in Europe where you usually don’t have movable handle on the outside.
Does this have the Ultra Wide chip which will allow it to be unlocked within 6ft of the lock? Also can you speak to the security of this lock vs the Switch Bot?
ooooh interesting. Do you think it will work on a sliding patio door? I'm guessing it might have trouble detecting when it's closed, but a retrofit option that turns the key is going to be my only chance for a smart lock until I change that door to a proper one, so I'm hopeful! I've watched so many reviews of the Switchbot one but I have a couple of their items and they just aren't trustworthy enough (in my experience) to trust with the security of my home. It's one thing if my curtains randomly open in the middle of the night, but that's not okay for a lock. Very glad Aqara is moving into this space. And HomeKey! Woo!!
Just spent the morning trying to install the U200. I was replacing a U100 so I had to go out and buy a Schlage deadbolt for the door. The inside baseplate does not fit this lock. After installing the deadbolt and outside locking cylinder the tang rubs on the bottom of the baseplate cutout, and there is no way to fit the adapter onto the tang. Had to take everything off, and put the U100 back on the door. IDK if there are any US type deadbolts that will work with this, but I cannot keep buying deadbolts trying to find one that fits.
So what about proximity unlock, my August lock will open as I get close to it, no Home key no tapping just auto unlock. Hope this has that feature too.
Omg you’ve got white paint over your door knob. lol. 😂 Who did that. Awesome lock hey. I do like Aqara. I’ve got the D100 I think it is on my front door. It’s a huge lock but I am very happy with it. Shame with this that you can’t use the other Aqara hubs. I’ve got that cat camera hub. Thanks 🙏 heaps for the info, another great video.
Just starting getting an Apple Home going. I am going to do a little at a time and the U50 was looking like a good option, but now I am reconsidering. If I do a U200, might I avoid buying a hub as Matter over Thread will be the standard for all things? Debating budget vs potential future consideration of going all Thread for future devices.
Yes, Matter over Thread is a strong selling point of this lock, in my opinion. You don't need anything extra in order to take advantage of all of the features. The U50 is a great, budget friendly lock though as well. I would consider if you may want other aqara zigbee accessories in the future and whether or not having an Aqara hub may be beneficial in the future.
@@ShaneCreates thank you. That is where my debate lies. I will probably expand slowly to manage budget. For that reason, and because a lock should last a long time, I am going to invest in the U200. Thank you. Been feasting on your videos and appreciate your niche focus.
This looks like a solid smart lock. I have Level Lock Touch Edition and I like the slim look and wish a newer version existed with all these features. Any feedback on the battery performance? Seems like you completely skipped this part? How much does the replacement pack cost? What is the expected life before needing replacement? How long does the single charge last for based on your tests? How about the keypad?
I did mention that the lock gets an estimated 6 months of battery life. Of course I haven't had it long enough to put that to the test. Mine is at 90% still after a couple months of testing and lots of use. Aqara has not indicated whether or not they will sell replacement batteries separately.
@@ShaneCreates I learn to ignore any vendor provided claims when it comes to batteries as usually those are over inflated and unrealistic to achieve. I am glad that your battery life is still that high after couple months of testing! This is very promising, but i am still concerned by the custom battery pack that is required. I hope this unit does not turn into a disposable unit once the battery dies, or the replacement battery does not cost 50% of the cost of the lock itself.
This is just for certain EU style locks. The U200 is compatible with different lock types. If you have a turn knob like mine (standard US deadbolt) it will work.
Nice video, but this isn't the first retrofit smart lock that supports Thread and Matter. The first one was the Nuki 3.0 Pro and Nuki 3.0. The pro comes with integrated wifi. Both have an API and a web management aside phone management and can easily be integrated in a smart home system. Mine runs in Hubitat Elevation and is integrated in HomeKit by the featured HomeKit Bridge.
Can one keypad open 2 locks at once… I have two doors to walk through to get into house would be cool if I could swipe once on outside and it would open both.
I don’t think it’s possible but you could probably set up an automation: when Lock A unlocks, unlock Lock B. Connection speed would be a factor in that scenario and i think Thread would be best.
All the aqara app features can be accessed via Bluetooth, you just have to be in range. Adding the aqara hub in just allows you to make those changes from Anywhere
Hello Shane, I am also in the aqara ecosystem with all types of aqara accessories in my smart home. Although I do occasionally have accessories that randomly go offline, and they normally come back online if you leave it for a little bit (lets say the next day). I wonder do you have the same problem, and what can be the possible cause to this. They are all in good range with good signal, and I even have a couple of hubs at different location to provide a good coverage.
Hi Shane thank you for a great review I have a question I have a Scandi cylinder but its placed on top of the handle, like the us deadbolt lock, so my question is can I turn the lock so its placed like the deadbolt?
I just bought it. Have been waiting for it for months. Sadly homekit setup failed. Have all kinds of thread devices at home including the apple tv 4k. Its a bummer
@@ShaneCreates Excellent news, thanks for confirming 🙏 Your channel has been a fantastic source of information for me since I’ve moved my smart home over from SmartThings to HomeKit
Nice review, as always, Shane! Q: would you say this is more powerful as per torque force than the Nuki Pro? I'm having trouble with my Nuki, causing random fails to open.
Great review as usual Shane! I bought this from Kickstarter campaign and it has been great so far. I have a question though, I added a Aqara door and window sensor p2 to my door, and I wanted to trigger the lock 10 seconds after detecting the door was closed, but I don't understand how to do it with HomeKit automations, is it even possible?
I'm assuming you have tried the "auto lock" feature where it locks when the door is closed. That is a setting you can enable in the Aqara app and you can set it to 10 seconds. If that's not reliable and you prefer to use the door sensor, you can create an automation in the Aqara app or the Home app. In the home app, create a new automation when the door is closed. - Convert to shortcut - Wait Action set to 10 seconds - Control HomeKit Accessory Action (lock the door)
@@ShaneCreates Thanks! I was missing the "convert to shortcut" step. Also added an "if" statement to make sure the sensor is still in "closed" state after the 10 seconds. Works great! Thank you! :)
Will you be reviewing the GE Cync Reveal HD+ under cabinet lights? These were revealed in CES 2024 and are finally available for purchase. Been looking for a non-LED strip solution to my kitchen cabinet lights and can't wait to check these out!
@@ShaneCreates Can't wait to see them! I just ordered mine yesterday and the only thing that worries me currently is how I could get the multiple fixtures to link together over a 3 foot gap in my kitchen cabinets. Curious to see if the packaging has any mention on how to solve this
SwitchBot Pro is also a great lock. The fact that the U200 has support for Thread and Home Key are pretty significant upgrades in my opinion. I guess it depends on 1) would you ever use Home Key, and 2) are you satisfied with the speed and reliability of the SwitchBot Pro's bluetooth connection.
U200 3.0.0_0065 App V5.0.0 As mentioned in the video, I had some issues with that earlier while my lock was also connected to HomeKit. Here is what worked for me: 1. reset the lock 2. Connect lock to the Aqara app and bind to Aqara hub 3. Connect to Apple Home via "Expose to matter" menu in the device settings in the Aqara app. Hope this helps!
@@ShaneCreates ah.. I’m on 3.0.0_0057 and the app says firmware up to date! Hope Aqara fixes this soon. The app asks to update, but says firmware is up to date. HomeKit integration works fine though.
Since you’ve had yours longer than me, how’s the battery holding up? Do you think it’ll hit that 6 month claim? I too had to use a different tail piece but that’s been a reoccurring theme with retrofit locks.
Shane, I'm new to your channel and to Apple Home. Is it just me, or is the cost of automation somewhat prohibitive at the moment In the UK this lock is just short of 270GBP on Amazon which is pretty steep
Anyone have any experience with the “range” of the home key sensing? Could you get away with putting the keypad on the inside of the door and touching the key to the exterior face of the door?
I still can’t get Homekit to register when everybody has left home. Nothing is triggered. Makes it rather useless. We have all selected our home in Maps, and we use Apple TV 4k as a hub.
Hi there, it seems like a lot of people having problem getting it paired with Apple Homekit (no Aqara Hub). Do you have tested this without the Aqara hub? Has anybody an idea, I have tried a lot, battery out, reset, set, lock/unlokc while in pairing mode. My homekit just says "Cant connect" "Unexpected Error" Thx
Yes I used it for a while directly in HomeKit, without connecting to an Aqara hub. Make sure your phone is on the same network as your HomeKit hub. Reset the lock and try to add it again.
@@ShaneCreates Hi there and thx for the quick answer So its finally working The bug: I have for a long time ago set my Apple Mini to get beta updates and set auto update on, but it was on a ver 15.xx, so it has never received any updates 😞 Now its 17.5 and the Lock is in the Apple HomeKit with Apple key working 🙂 When installing its important to be near the Lock with the iPhone as well Greatings from Denmark / Steen

Any advice? I’m all setup. Home key is in my wallet but I hold it up either on my phone or watch to the keypad and nothing happens
Any advantage going with this over U100 ? I’m in Apple ecosystem so Thread might not be a big deal as U100 connects over bluetooth to HomePod I guess
I think the U200 is faster when controlling it with the Apple Home app, since it's using Thread.
I’m confused, so you are saying it only works if you have a key on the inside and not the turn knob?
This is just for certain EU style locks. The U200 is compatible with different lock types. If you have a turn knob like mine (standard US deadbolt) it will work.
any idea if this lock can support Auto Unlock?
At the time of launch there is no Auto Unlock but I believe that feature will be added via firmware update in the near future.
Excellent review as ever Shane. I have it installed on a UK multi-point lock door and it works great. Your review blows mine out of the water 😊
Hey Andy, thanks for watching! Great to hear yours is working great also! 😃
@@ShaneCreates I am a massive fan of yours and I aspire to get my videos to your high standard 😊 hope you have an amazing day!
@@andysreviewsandsmarthometips thank you for the support and kind words. 🙏Keep on grinding!
What happens, if the battery is empty? Am I locked out then?
You can use your key
Can one keypad open 2 locks at once… I have two doors to walk through to get into house would be cool if I could swipe once on outside and it would open both.
I don’t think it’s possible but you could probably set up an automation: when Lock A unlocks, unlock Lock B. Connection speed would be a factor in that scenario and i think Thread would be best.
@@ShaneCreates thanks I’ll try when I get to that point
It wasn’t really clear, but if you only pair it to your HomeKit hub and not the Aqara app, are you able to set up fingerprints in the HomeKit app?
All the aqara app features can be accessed via Bluetooth, you just have to be in range.
Adding the aqara hub in just allows you to make those changes from
Anywhere
Hello Shane, I am also in the aqara ecosystem with all types of aqara accessories in my smart home. Although I do occasionally have accessories that randomly go offline, and they normally come back online if you leave it for a little bit (lets say the next day). I wonder do you have the same problem, and what can be the possible cause to this. They are all in good range with good signal, and I even have a couple of hubs at different location to provide a good coverage.
What lock do you use on your studio office door?
I use the Holomarq lock. Video Here: th-cam.com/video/m2IM5wXXwAM/w-d-xo.html
Hi Shane thank you for a great review I have a question I have a Scandi cylinder but its placed on top of the handle, like the us deadbolt lock, so my question is can I turn the lock so its placed like the deadbolt?
Where’s the shirt from?
I just bought it. Have been waiting for it for months. Sadly homekit setup failed. Have all kinds of thread devices at home including the apple tv 4k. Its a bummer
Make sure your iPhone is on the same network as your homekit hubs. Also make sure iPv6 is turned on (required for Matter).
I have the kickstarter version and until today I still haven't been able to add it to HomeKit nor aqara hub m3
Really? Have you updated the lock and the Aqara app?
@@ShaneCreates hi Shane, thanks for the reponse, Yes I have updated everything and nothing seams to work. should I reset it? and try again?
Hey Shane, does this lock allow you to have this lock attached to multiple smart home ecosystems at once i.e. HomeKit & SmartThings?
Yes. Matter supports “multi-admin” meaning you can have it connected to multiple ecosystems at the same time.
@@ShaneCreates Excellent news, thanks for confirming 🙏 Your channel has been a fantastic source of information for me since I’ve moved my smart home over from SmartThings to HomeKit
@@garethjones5068 Great to hear! Thank you for watching! 🙏
What’s your thought on this lock over their other locks U100 and U50
All are great locks in my option with lots of features. But the fact that this one supports Thread is a big deal to me. I really like that.
Nice review, as always, Shane! Q: would you say this is more powerful as per torque force than the Nuki Pro? I'm having trouble with my Nuki, causing random fails to open.
Thanks for watching Alberto. Unfortunately I have not used the Nuki locks, so I cannot speak on those from personal experience.
Does homepod mini work as matter hub?
Yes
- Convert to shortcut
- Wait Action set to 10 seconds
- Control HomeKit Accessory Action (lock the door)
@@ShaneCreates Thanks! I was missing the "convert to shortcut" step. Also added an "if" statement to make sure the sensor is still in "closed" state after the 10 seconds. Works great! Thank you! :)
I just bought SB Lock Pro recently. I didn’t know about this… ugh! Oh well!
I did too but within the 30 day amazon return window!! :-) also I am sure you can sell it on the switchbot subreddit if you needed too
will this work in UK which has a thumb turn lock on inside and standard key hole on outside?
If you can take the thumb turn off then yes
Will you be reviewing the GE Cync Reveal HD+ under cabinet lights? These were revealed in CES 2024 and are finally available for purchase. Been looking for a non-LED strip solution to my kitchen cabinet lights and can't wait to check these out!
I plan to. I just took them out of the box on my Instagram stories today. I’ve also been excited about these since seeing them at CES.
@@ShaneCreates Can't wait to see them! I just ordered mine yesterday and the only thing that worries me currently is how I could get the multiple fixtures to link together over a 3 foot gap in my kitchen cabinets. Curious to see if the packaging has any mention on how to solve this
What? Locks aren't the same everywhere?!
1:42 Is the Aqara Hub 3 going to work instead of any Apple Home Hub to use HomeKey?
No, the lock needs to be paired to the Apple Home app and you need an Apple Home hub to use HomeKey.
@@ShaneCreates so, what’s the benefit if I have both? Or, what I will lose if I have Apple HomePod only?
Hey Shane you had the SwitchBot Pro - how does this compare? I have the pro, is it with the upgrade ?
SwitchBot Pro is also a great lock. The fact that the U200 has support for Thread and Home Key are pretty significant upgrades in my opinion. I guess it depends on 1) would you ever use Home Key, and 2) are you satisfied with the speed and reliability of the SwitchBot Pro's bluetooth connection.
@@ShaneCreates yea .. speed is one, home key i want and the look of it .. having a silver option is amazing
@@bryanhchi yea that's a good point. That was one criticism I had for the SB Lock Pro... that it only comes in one color currently.
Which firmware version are you on? I got the kickstarter version and couldn’t get the lock connected to hub M3. Aqara app and hub up to date.
U200 3.0.0_0065
App V5.0.0
As mentioned in the video, I had some issues with that earlier while my lock was also connected to HomeKit. Here is what worked for me:
1. reset the lock
2. Connect lock to the Aqara app and bind to Aqara hub
It seems like it will hold up to the 6 month claim. I'm at 90% right now, and it's been used pretty heavily for for the past couple of months.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Is there a reason why only retrofit locks exist in Europe?
have your tried with other RFID tags ?
I didn't try but it's my understanding that you must use Aqara NFC tags.
Shane, I'm new to your channel and to Apple Home.
Is it just me, or is the cost of automation somewhat prohibitive at the moment
In the UK this lock is just short of 270GBP on Amazon which is pretty steep
Can you provide us a 1 month update on your use & experience now after a month
It’s been a great lock for me.
Anyone have any experience with the “range” of the home key sensing?
Could you get away with putting the keypad on the inside of the door and touching the key to the exterior face of the door?
I don't think it would work through a door.
I still can’t get Homekit to register when everybody has left home. Nothing is triggered. Makes it rather useless. We have all selected our home in Maps, and we use Apple TV 4k as a hub.
Can’t be used in most condos as it changes the view in common area
You only have to change the inside part of the lock of the lock.
Classic. I bought a new smart lock a month ago...
Might replace my Linus Yale one day, but now yet
Can we get another code? Just saw this 😞
It will be on sale soon for Prime Day, same price as the discounted price. I'll share all the prime day deals in a new video coming very soon.
@@ShaneCreates
Hi there and thx for the quick answer
So its finally working
The bug:
I have for a long time ago set my Apple Mini to get beta updates and set auto update on, but it was on a ver 15.xx, so it has never received any updates 😞
Now its 17.5 and the Lock is in the Apple HomeKit with Apple key working 🙂
When installing its important to be near the Lock with the iPhone as well
