I fully agree with you when you say it’s better today to choose Matter accessories But as I already said in some other posts, I perfectly understand companies want to sell products using « matter over WiFi » as it’s probably cheaper to produce and more users will be able to use it (we all have a WiFi network at home) but I really hope these compagnies will also have a « matter over thread » version of these products as « Matter over thread » is for me the futur of home protocol (low power consumption for products using battery, mesh network, will always worked even if the WiFi router is down, etc…) Unfortunately, it seems it’s not the case for Nanoleaf whose latest products are only available using « matter over WiFi « …
I purchased Govee curtain with matter I have some much trouble connecting it to homekit, every time it sssys that it doesn’t pair or connect to network how can I fix it?
check that every device is on 2.4ghz network and the same wifi. reset your curtain device. now try it again. also turn on bluetooth. This is a real noob answer. having some trouble myself. But the matter setup worked for me. In the govee app you also need to setup wifi connection. Also it says that you should setup your wifi in max 15 min when using matter. or else it might not work. So try reset the device and try again.
In the time of plug-and-play in which most people generally expect everything to "just work", the initial launch of the Matter Standard really did leave people with a bad impression and whethe or not it really "matters". However, with any new protocols and standards, they have to start somewhere. Zigbee was messy in the start, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Thread, etc. All messy in the beginning. Matter as a language has great potential and has come a long way since 2022. I've been actively following the development since it before 1.0 was even released; excited but also well aware that I'm considered an early-adopter (comes with bugs and growing pains!). I'm so happy that people are finally realizing not only the potential of Matter, but also now are publicizing it's positive features. Great video, glad to finally hear something positive about Matter rather than folks hyper-focusing on the rocky start.
This app came with my new phone. I don't want it so I 4un-installed it and disabled the framework app but everytime I go to my home screen it pops up asking if I want to add a old airconditioner. I don't know what to do next.
One word of caution to anyone switching their router to IPv6. When I did this, I needed to power-cycle my Hubitat and Philips Hue bridges. They worked fine after a power-cycle.
Right now my wifi is on IPv4, I have a decent amount of HomeKit devices, plus three home hubs none of which work on matter. Will updating my router to IPv6 mess with devices and HomeKit? Is it worth it or just a big hassle?
I like what eve did with the new matter update making the eve thermo control talk directly to the eve thermos en having them show the same temperature. Thermo control rocks! Hope you get to do a review!
Best matter explanation I’ve seen and under 10 min! Great video! Thanks! Even though matter promised to make all devices work across all platforms and that’s not really the case as not all platforms support the full matter spec, we’re still better off because when the platform does expand to that part of the spec, your device will retroactively work! It’s amazing we got here tbh. Huge corporations coordinating at this level is nearly impossible. It can’t be understated how much better this is for consumers against all odds!
Thank you! Well said Luke. It’s a great partnership. I think it’s in part because all the companies realized this is what’s necessary for the smart home as a concept to reach mass adoption.
I think it matter to mention threat when talking about matter, I mean it literally was shown multiple times in this video as matter can also be so supported via threat, no? Thanks!
Well…my eve window door sensor that I upgraded to matter became a brick today …I had it for 2 years went no response after upgraded to matter and now it’s worthless. I have 4 HomePod mini, 4 Apple tv, all good. I reset, unplugged, removed, re added, did everything possible to fix it and nope!
hmm, I guess I need a more basic explanation. I found this to be rather too advance to understand for me. I bought a level lock plus 3 weeks ago. Now they have matter, so plan on returning it to get the matter version. Eventhough they claim they'll firmware update if I update by January 15th. Odd for a company to put a deadline on firmware. At any rate, haven't opened it. Might even look at other brands. It was $448 with accessories, wonder if there's something better. My current August Pro lock isn't so great.
I'm a little confused regarding the need for IPV6? I am reasonably technical but NO Expert. I wanted to start installing and testing Matter-based devices (Plugs) and then saw your previous video on the need for IPV6 for Matter devices. I assume but let me ask, that to implement IPV6 for purposes of Matter, I need to have IPV6 "external" service from my Internet provider (e.g., Comcast in my case)??? I did some research and as I understand it, IPV6 service in my area is targeted for "Business" users not so much for "Residential" so NOT good Residential support?! Here is my question... it there a way (e.g., a bridge device, hub, or controller) that can provide an IPV6 service on my internal LAN/WiFi network just for Matter devices but somehow translate it to IPV4 if or when it needs to go over an IPV4 based external Internet service??? Not sure if my question makes sense?? Based on the IPV6 Internet service (or lack of) in my area (maybe all US), it will be a long time before I think it would be practical to go to IPV6 service in a Residential setting and therefore to Matter devices?? Is my understanding correct? Any help/direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
I’m in the same situation! Reading here and there we maybe should check for "matter over thread" devices, not over wi-fi! But I would like to hear from someone who knows better.
@@thecryptonurse6331 As I said before... I am NO EXPERT... but in doing some research, I thought that in order to implement IPV6 within your "internal network" (e.g., LAN, Wifi) you also had to have "external" IPV6 service (e.g., on the WAN) side because a Matter device on the internal LAN/WiFi would be assigned an IPV6 address and if or when the device would need service(s) external to the LAN, it would communicate using it's IPV6 address. Therefore, my Home Router and the Internet Provider (Comcast) would have to use the devices IPV6 address when communicating out to the external/Internet side (e.g., to my smart plug or light bulb's Cloud service or Alexa Voice support)??!! Without external Internet IPV6 service this would not work. And the other "non-Matter devices" also connected to the local WAN/WiFI would also have IPV6 addressing and therefore would also need external Internet Service using IPV6 addressing? Can anyone please clarify?? Eric Welander (or others) would you please comment on my posts and the other Replies and help clarify if an "Internal LAN/WiFi" IPV6 network connected to an "external Internet IPV4" is technically possible??? Is there some other work around?? Is there a "Bridge" or "Hub" like product that can translate between internal LAN IPV6 Addressing to external IPV4 Addressing?? I am not sure Home Routers can do it or it seems very convoluted or complex?? Is there another TH-cam Channel or Website that could help clarify / explain??? I have looked but can't find any?? It seems like "external" IPV6 service is required for Matter devices?? Thanks
@@act4c3_onyoutube20 No. People have had the ability to use IPV6 for many years, by turning it on themselves on their internal network. But nothing used it, so most haven't.
@@act4c3_onyoutube20 Your internal network is never exposed to the Internet. If you've ever used a website that shows you your IP address, it will show you the ISP-assigned IPv4 IP address. That's because the ISP's device (aka home router) performs NAT (Network Address Translation) so any time a device on your network reaches out to the Internet, it will use the same IPv4 address. That's why you can run IPv6 in your home network and it won't impact your ability to communicate with the Internet.
If I have Matter smart plugs or smart balls, do I need the Apple Homepod/Google Home or Alexa? Can I control my lights with Siri (from my iPhone with my voice) or from my iPhone/iPad/Macbook with the HomeKit App? Also, can 2 people who are living together with their own devices (iPhone/iPad/Macbook) control at the same time and Sync the HomeKit app? Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
You must not have google home... What they never tell you, you do need a hub that has local control... Google Home can control all devices, but so far, has ZERO local control!!! And my internet drops all the time... Even though Google Max Hub and the new 4k streamer has matter and thread...still has no local control!!! I honestly avoid the matter brands with hubs. It’s getting old already when you need a hub for everything. I try to pick to the brands like Nanoleaf that doesn’t need a hub. The hubs gotta die! I would buy a lot more brands if they didn’t have the hub attached to everything.

I've been a beta tester for Matter before the official release, Matter has been every bit the improvement over the previous status quo.

Good explanation. The IPv6 requirement was news to me
Sadly, this means matter devices won’t work in my home. But matter over thread will.
@@richardgarno6591 Is that because your router doesn't support IPv6 or because of your employer requirements?

Matter vs Zigbee?
the way i describe Matter is that its basically USB for smarthomes
at this point sounds like no benefit, still no guarantee of compatibility, which is the point..

It needs to be IVP6 on the internal network not from your internet provider.

So I have a question. Must you purchase an Apple Matter HomePod if you have iOS 18 on phone and ipad
Your phone is a Matter controller 💯

I would go with apple homekit... Because it has local control... Alexa and Google home has zero local control!!!
Oh boy, never ending story. So my Starlink router doesn't support IPv6, and know? I think all of the hassle and money is not worth it...
Didn’t they even remove the Ethernet port lol?
At least for apple home using a hub, it generates its own IPv6 network. So no need for your home network to support IPv6.
is matter better than KNX?
