When we think about Western music literature, some common misconceptions are that it's serious, elitist and static. Sebastian Bach who is known for composing many brilliant religious music--- is witty with this. He wrote this "Coffee Cantata" in 1730s about a young women's love for coffee. As a result of colonialism, coffee was becoming popular in Europe in the 18th century. There were lots of debates and conflicts surrounding the consumption of coffee at the time. How grand! Thank you for posting this!!!

People forget that classical music was modern music at some point. Wasn't everything commissioned to the pope, sometimes composers just wrote for fun and entertainment. Some of the composers even had rockstar like status. For example the piano is now the symbol of traditionalism. But back in the day when it was the new thing it shaked up the musical world and some of the musicians even got critisism to be too rebellious and sacrilegious

I have already listened to better flute players. But I have already listened to more challenging arias, too. That is the important point. Please listen to the Cantata BWV 8. This cantata contains an aria of which I do not know the exact title but which is a tremendous challenge for the flutist.

    • @percyvolnar8010

Better flute players? Wow. So dismissive. This is a Traverso... And most modern flute players wouldn't last 2 minutes playing this instrument. It has no mechanical keys and all players are expected to be able to play the instrument in all 12 keys and know all fingerings per each octave. The player, Wilbert Hazelzet is a KNOWN LEGEND the world over who has in his time covered some of the more virtuoso pieces for the traverso.

This was written in the same year that Pergolesi wrote the opera buffa "La Serva Padrona", so it can be looked upon as a German opera buffa, or what German opera buffa would have been like if such a category existed. This soprano wants coffee, but in the Pergolesi piece Uberto wants from Despina something altogether different.

A common feature of Baroque opera is that some instruments or voices will be inactive for long periods.
For example, this Tenor had PLENTY of time to get torqued on espresso before he was needed again!

Bach used to jam with his friends at Zimmerman's coffee house. Over the years many famous musicians came to jam at the coffee house and have fun. It is said that Bach composed the cantata as a satire against the Prussian king, Frederick The Great (admirer of Bach) who had forbidden coffee and used coffee smellers to sniff out coffee drinkers.

    FULL LYRICS:
1 Recitative: Schweigt stille (Narrator) 0:00
    Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht
    Und höret, was itzund geschicht:
    Da kömmt Herr Schlendrian
    Mit seiner Tochter Liesgen her,
    Er brummt ja wie ein Zeidelbär;
Hört selber, was sie ihm getan!
    Hunderttausend Hudelei!
    Was ich immer alle Tage
    Meiner Tochter Liesgen sage,
    Gehet ohne Frucht vorbei.
3 Recitative: Du böses Kind (Schlendrian & Lieschen) 3:33
Bass (Schlendrian): Du böses Kind, du loses Mädchen,
Ach! wenn erlang ich meinen Zweck:
    Tu mir den Coffee weg!
4 Aria: Ei!
O! so kömmt man glücklich fort.
7 Recitative: Nun folge, was dein Vater spricht! (Schlendrian & Lieschen) 12:22
Bass (Schlendrian): Nun folge, was dein Vater spricht!
Bass (Schlendrian): Wohlan! so musst du dich bequemen,
Nun! Coffee, bleib nur immer liegen!
Herr Vater, hört, ich trinke keinen nicht.
Bass (Schlendrian): So sollst du endlich einen kriegen!
    Sopran (Liesgen):
    Bald einen Mann verschaffen kann;
    Doch, Liesgen streuet heimlich aus:
Kein Freier komm mir in das Haus,
Er hab es mir denn selbst versprochen
Und rück es auch der Ehestiftung ein,
    Dass mir erlaubet möge sein,
Den Coffee, wenn ich will, zu kochen.
10 Trio: Die Katze läßt das Mausen nicht 20:21
Die Katze lässt das Mausen nicht,
    Die Jungfern bleiben Coffeeschwestern.
    Die Mutter liebt den Coffeebrauch,
    Die Grossmama trank solchen auch,
Wer will nun auf die Töchter lästern!

    Co mej córce Liesgen powiem,
    Choć powtarzam to co.dzień.
    Schlendrian
    Złe dziecię, dziewczyno pusta,
Ach, kiedyż ja wygram mą sprawę:
Rzuć ty wreszcie precz tę kawę!
    Liesgen
    Nie bądź ojcze tak surowy.
    Jeśli nie wypiję co dzień
    Trzech filiżaneczek kawy,
    To zostanie ze mnie cień,
Wiór, jak z kozy pieczeń sucha.
    Oj, jak smaczna kawa słodka.
    Niż całusów tysiąc milsza,
    Niż muszkatołowe wino.
    Kawę, kawę muszę ja pić,
A kto chce mnie czym pokrzepić,
    Niech kawy naleje jeno!
    Schlendrian
    Jeśli mi nie rzucisz kawy,
    To nie będziesz na zabawy,
    Ani też na spacer chodzić.
    Liesgen
    Zgoda!
    Byłem tylko kawę miała.
    Schlendrian
    Ależ głuptas z mej córeczki!
    Nie sprawię ci na fiszbinach
    Rozszerzanej sukieneczki.
    Liesgen
    Łatwo na to ja przystanę.
    Schlendrian
Nie będziesz mogła w oknie stać
    By z przechodniów mieć zabawę!
    Liesgen
To też, lecz daj się ubłagać
    I pozostaw mi mą kawę!
    Schlendrian
Nie dostaniesz też z mej ręki
    Ni srebrnej, ni złotej wstęgi
    By czepek przyozdobić!
    Liesgen
Dobrze, byłem sobie kawę mogła robić.
    Schlendrian
    Ach ty płocha Liesgen, ty,
    Przystaniesz na wszystko li?
    Schlendrian
    Dziewcząt co są uparte tak
    Nie łatwo jest przemóc. Wszak
    Gdy jej miejsce czułe znasz
    Łatwo już ją przekonasz.
    Schlendrian
    Bądź ojcu swemu posłuszną!
    Liesgen
We wszystkim, ale nie z kawą.
    Schlendrian
Więc się musisz i z tym zgodzić:
    Nigdy za mąż nie wychodzić.
    Liesgen
    Panie ojcze! Męża toć chcę!
    Schlendrian
Klnę się, nie ma o tym mowy.
    Liesgen
    Póki kawy nie porzucę?
Ach, kawo! Na zawsze żegnaj mi!
Panie ojcze, odtąd nie tknę już kawy.
    Schlendrian
    Wreszcie; więc męża poszukam ci!
    Jeszcze dziś
    Drogi ojcze, zechciej iść!
    Mąż, ach mąż!
    Przed oczami stoi wciąż!
    Oby rzecz się szybko działa,
    Bym, gdy kawę ja odłożę,
    Jeszcze nim się spać położę
    Dziarskiego męża dostała!
Chodzi i szuka teraz Schlendrian stary
    Jakby swojej córce Liesgen
    Rychło męża dać do pary;
    Lecz Liesgen skrycie głosi wszędzie:
Zalotnik żaden w dom nie wejdzie,
    Zanim sam tego nie przyrzecze
I bym też w kontrakcie ślubnym miała,
Że mi dozwoli, gdy będę chciała,
    Bym kawę sobie gotowała.
    Kot nie da spokoju myszy,
Panny zaś będą przy kawie trwać.
    Skoro mama kawę znała,
    Babcia także ją pijała,
    Któż córki zechce więc oczerniać.

This cantata was rather popular and seen as an attack on King Frederick the Great who actually tried to ban coffee in Prussia. He eventually issued this following decree on September 13, 1777:
"It is disgusting to notice the increase in the quantity of coffee used by my subjects, and the amount of money that goes out of the country in consequence. Everybody is using coffee. If possible, this must be prevented. My people must drink beer. His Majesty was brought up on beer, and so were his ancestors, and his officers. Many battles have been fought and won by soldiers nourished on beer; and the King does not believe that coffee-drinking soldiers can be depended upon to endure hardship or to beat his enemies in case of the occurrence of another war."
And then he hired about 400 retired soldiers as "coffee sniffers" to enforce the ban.
Needless to say his obstinate subjects regularly laughed them out of town and as a result the coffee consumption quadrupled across the kingdom.

Bach historians have suggested that Bach would drink around 32 cups of coffee per day. I guess its no wonder he was a machine who would write and compose pieces every waking hour. And after 32 cups per day, I'm sure he was awake for more hours to compose than most. 😂
