    I love how the manager has the balls to say "I'll crack your head open" to a guy that is clearly unhinged.

      I don't think the manager is playing with a full deck either. Makes you wonder what would have happened if those two actually came to blows.

      That dude is a gentleman. Did you notice how despite being upset about the bathroom, he didn't embarrass Barry on his date and pulled aside instead before kicking him out? A class act.

      @@silversnail1413 That's actually a little detail that the director was subtly trying to convey - if you look closely, the manager has exactly the same attire that Barry does, only with a slightly darker suit. He even seems to walk and talk with basically the same cadence that Barry does. The implication is that this guy represents what Barry will become when he finally finds a sense of purpose from falling in love with Lena.
      In that sense, it's also conveys that, yes, the Manager probably would win that fight because he has a sense of purpose which Barry doesn't yet have, similar to the way Barry eventually forces Dean Trumbell to back down at the end of the movie because he has found strength with Lena.

    Some people may take issue with the audio at 4:18 but I honestly like the distortion it has; it stresses the inner turmoil Barry's feeling and just shows how much he's retaining.

      I wouldn't be surprised if this was a mistake they decided to keep in. They probably said "action" and Sandler went ape shit on the bathroom. Then they didn't notice until after how high the gain or output was on the recorder and that's why it sounds so distorted. PTA has been known to keep in mistakes or replicate mistakes he likes in his movies

      Also those suppressed emotions from the incident, the leftover rage, despite assuring her he doesn't remember throwing that hammer through the window, stoked the flames. At least Barry still managed to leave and take it out on the bathroom instead. Still cognizant of when he's close to breaking point.

      @@siumahin9049 It's interesting that he only unleashes his rage on people who go beyond rudeness, threatening, to messing with his life (call-girl, Mattress Guy, Mattress Guy's four brothers) especially those he knows (one of his sister's later). When the Restaurant Manager warned him he'd crack his head open if he didn't leave, Barry stayed docile and reserved, eventually complying.

  • @stazandhissnes2428
    @stazandhissnes2428 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I gotta give credit to both sides.
    Barry may have snapped, but he came back to his table and date calm. The manager came to pull Barry off to the side and have a one on one conversation about the destruction he caused. Though, nobody *saw* him do it, he had no choice but to let him leave quietly without causing a scene or getting the police involved, save for the threat because he *knew* he did it but couldn't prove it despite seeing his hand bleeding and Barry giving a somewhat convincing alibi.
    Props to both of them.

    Such a brilliant, unconventional comedy from PTA. It’s as if he watched a Sandler film like Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison and said “These characters would never be able to function if they existed in real life”, and that was the whole point of the movie. To bring one of those absurd characters into a grounded film.
    It’s one of the funniest movies ever, in my opinion. My favorite rom-com probably.

      I don't think so, it linked with what she was thinking. She's concerned. And found the story of the pudding concerning. But she liked him, so she wanted to bring up a story she's heard that she also thought was concerning to Guage his reaction to see what she was potentially getting herself into.

He makes huge films like Magnolia and There Will Be Blood but he's also not afraid to make smaller, more intimate films that might not make a huge amount of money but are still endlessly fascinating and wonderful to watch. I fear that soon artists and filmmakers like him won't be able to receive any funding and all we'll have are crappy superhero movies and cheap horror flicks.
