  • I've been holding off covering this particular lens, because before I even tested at it I thought it was overpriced, and I /hate/ overpriced equipment. But, I've had a lot of comments from people wanting me to cover it, so I caved in to the pressure and...well, you'll see what I thought of its quality.

    I have this lens over year... My review:
    Pros:
    - very sharp even on f/4 with good contrast even when resisting sun (image quality is best thing on this lens for me)
    - very effective IS (perfect for hand-shoot video)
    - smooth zoom (mine is really smooth) and focusing
    - build quality is superb
    - macro is nice feature
    - weather sealing
    - universal focal length (best zoom lens for documentary, street and portrait photography - outdoor) with same aperture (good for video)
    - USM with newer cameras is really quiet (not like in video with 60D)
    Cons
    - price (cashback was the reason why I bought it)
    - heavy
    - sharpness getting worse from f/8 (not very good for long exposures or landscape photography)
    I was deciding between this and 24-105 but sharpness is really much better on 24-70 than 24-105. I would probably use more +45mm than macro feature but sharpness was crucial.

      Sharpness drop from f8 (f11 actually) is due to physics (diffraction), outside of anyone’s control. Happens to all wide angle lenses regardless of brand

    Good technical review. One thing though: on this and several other reviews comments were made about short focal range. The range actually is perfect for those who own either of the 70-200 mm L lenses. The macro mode also allows one to leave their 100 mm f2.8 L macro at home thus reducing the weight of one's kit. Cheers from Chicago!

    The 2.8 II version is a wedding lens. For all other uses the f4 is much much better. On a 4k display the photos are about identical but the f4 has other advantages (size weight stability) that the 2.8 doesn’t. It’s my workhorse. Have had it for 8 years

    • @christophewagner4028
      @christophewagner4028 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      In all cases the f4 is better. Bokeh f2.8 and f4 are the same at 70. For wedding use 85 1.2 and 35 1.4. Then you will see a difference in bokeh

    I love the 24-70 range lenses. I used to own the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L (the original version). That lens was okay, I put it through hell and it never failed me. That said, it was SUPER bulky and heavy. I decided that I am less concerned about maximum aperture and more concerned about all day comfort and sharpness. I decided to sell my 24-70 2.8 and buy this lens...best decision I've made in a while. This lens is almost a pound lighter and much more compact than the original 2.8, and the sharpness is amazing on my copy. I would recommend the 24-70 f4.0 IS to anyone who wants a lightweight sharp lens from a proven company.

    I had the 100mm f/2.8 L Macro and sold it to buy this lens. The 100mm is AMAZING, seriously amazing... I want one again still. But I could only afford one or the other. I like this lens because it has that zoom range but also gets you those macro shots when you want them. It's sharp and I don't have the same problem he mentioned in the video about the zoom ring being a little jerky.
    I purchased this lens mainly for hikes and general shooting. I like doing landscapes and macro work, and this lens allows me to do both pretty nicely in one package.

    Picked this one up recently for under £400.00 n excellent condition. Sharpest lense I have used. Sharper than the 35 mm 1.8 RF .. Sharper than the 16-35 F4 [EF]. I am not into Bokeh's, I normally use my 1.8 RF 35mm for night but generally my style is more about detail but with haze and light tones. I must say, the images of this lens till this very day remain in the top bracket. I never liked RF lense due to their crap build quality. Thye feel like a toy. EFS for me are heavy duty and in term of image quality it is just small margins really. Barring the AF on RFS interacts with the Cmera faster but hey, I am not a sports journalist.

  • @Hubieee
    @Hubieee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Cashback on this lens is always big: 200 € in Germany. So it's like a 25% discount, which gives it a good price to performance ratio.
    The macro mode is a feature I've always liked about this lens. But I have to say, that I more and more tend to use primes because I find the f/4 very limiting regarding party shots indoors and general low light photography. With a flash it's all right and let's be honest... you won't get a hell lot of out of focus background with a 35 f/2 either, when you can still zoom in to 70 mm with this zoom lens for a tighter headshot.
    A nice lens.

  • @jsal999999
    @jsal999999 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My concern with both of these is the external zoom. Should I be worried about dust getting into this thing when it's zoomed out? Also it looks 'goofy' with that front barrel sticking out. I just like the way the 70 - 200 zooms internally, and also the image quality.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're quite well weather-sealed so dust doesn't really get in on Canon's 'L' lenses (in my experience, anyway)

    Hi Chris, I took your advice some time ago and picked up a nice black copy of the 24-85 for a meager £26 off ebay. It works well on my 5D Mk2, and I have no remorse at all. Similarly, the Tamron SP 70-300 Di VC USD you recommended, came to me for £165, also from ebay, and what an excellent job Tamron did there .
    I also own a Vivitar series 1, 19-35 f3.5-4.5 for full frame, cost me £70. This lens can also be found badged under Tokina, Cosina and others, and has become my favourite landscape lens. It's a very cheep feeling, plastic thing, with a front element that spins, and no full time manual focus, but I couldn't care less hehe.
    I also have a 20D and a 60D and have been using the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM and the Canon 55-250 STM on them, and they are very impressive lenses too.
    So I'd just like to say thanks for everything you do, your honesty and integrity when it comes to reviewing lenses is second to none.

    I have this lens and prefer it over the twice as expensive 24-70 2.8 ii as that has no IS and the IS is great on this for handheld video! nice to not need the hassle of a steadycam or tripod or shoulder rig (juddery zoom sucks tho as u mentioned). I used it recently with my 1dx2 as it also makes a very short list of compatible lenses that can do a slow focus pull transition from the touch screen while shooting, most lenses with the 1dx2 are a set speed only and quite quick but this can be smooth n slow if u want. Interesting and strange it's soft up close in the middle but sharper if focused at a distance, hadn't noticed. The macro is nice except u often get so close with the lens that it shadows ur subject and leaves it with back lighting only hehe

    • @bweeeda
      @bweeeda 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh not only super slow focus transitions but extra fast ability over most lenses, which is best for continuous auto focus tracking during video

    • @TrollMeister_
      @TrollMeister_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I too passed up on the 2.8 II. In real life shooting the f4 is every bit as sharp at the 2.8, and I love the lightweight, compact size and IS.

    My only regret so far with this lens is that I didn't buy it before my last holiday. It's that good compared to all the old second hand gear I've been using. It also works remarkably well with an original EOS650. It is *big* however. Bigger than the 28-80mm USM it replaces, or the 50mm F1.4 that normally lives in my bag. Balances well on the old beast, mind. Tested it on a 100D for sheds and giggles and it was out-resolving the sensor
    It could read the text on a license plate from 100 metres away in 50mm, which the kit lens with the 100D just rendered as a white.

  • @DanielFazzari
    @DanielFazzari 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A major difference between this lens and the 24-105 L is their t-stop values. The 24-70 lets in nearly a full stop more light at the same aperture!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's if you trust DXO Mark hehe. I wish I'd done my own tests, to look into it.

    • @DanielFazzari
      @DanielFazzari 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh, I wasn't just trusting them ;-) I ran my own comparison. Using full manual exposure, I metered a subject properly with my 24-70 and took a shot. Then, without changing any settings, put my 24-105 on the camera
      and it metered 1 stop underexposed. Photos definitely show the difference, as the ones with 24-105 are considerably darker than the ones with 24-70. I also reversed that by metering properly with the 24-105. When I put the 24-70 on, it metered 1 stop overexposed.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very interesting - I'm surprised to hear it! Like I said, I wish I'd looked at it myself at the time.

      @daniel Thank you for your comment, that's very interesting. If you had to choose again between the 24-70 f4 IS Macro and the new 24-105 f4 IS version II, which one would you pick?

    • @DanielFazzari
      @DanielFazzari 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Laurent L I thought about that very seriously! I do not have first hand experience with the mark II version of the 24-105, but according to DXOMARK, it has lost peak sharpness and still doesn't let in as much light as the 24-70 (approx. 1/2 stop less). In the end, I sold my 24-105, and don't plan on getting the mark II.

    I'd recommend the EF-S 15-85mm for APS-C. It is roughly equivalent to the 28-105mm in zoom range but was built specifically to suit an APS-C sensor and it's optically equal to an L lens but Canon don't give the L label to EF-S or EF-M lenses. It's not cheap but worth it.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 15-85 is actually even better than that - it's the equivalent of 24-136mm

  • @DynamixWarePro
    @DynamixWarePro 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very good review as always. The macro feature is a bit odd, especially as it isn't that sharp until f/8. I know wider apertures on macro isn't always that useful, but I would have been good to be sharper though at the wider apertures. These are popular macro lenses, so could you possibly review the older Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro and or the newer version, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM? Maybe how they compare to the Canon 100mm L Macro lens.

  • @BachPhotography

    What another exceptionally well put video from you Chris.
    I see absolutely nothing negative towards your review of this lens.
    You explained your review from an utmost professional point of use, as per usual. I, like many others continue to learn constructive information always when watching your videos.
    I might add, without blowing your trumpet even further, that I have purchased two lens thanks to your videos. ( canon 24-105mm L and the canon nifty fifty 1.8 ).
    I have been happy with my images becuase I learned to listen and learn.
    My next dillema is to trade in my old sigma 70-200mm f2.8 non imagw stabilised lens for something lighter and with an IS !
    Any suggestions..?
    Keep up the the excellent work, you are blessed.

      Thanks! Glad I could help. Tamron are rumored to be working on an image stabilized 70-200 f/4 lens at the moment, so it might be worth holding on for that. Otherwise it's the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS USM - which is a little expensive.

    Hi Chris, I'm looking for a general walk around lens but keeping the price tag reasonably low. I'm shooting on a Canon 80D. What lens would you buy between this, the 24-105 f/4, or the old 24-70 f/2.8 mk1?
    I'm oriented on the one in this video because of sharpness and minor vignetting and distortion compared to the 24-105 f/4, and because of the IS compared to the old 24-70 f/2.8.
    Plus, the price is not to high on this, and has a pretty good macro function.
    Just wanted to hear your opinion.

    Hi Christopher. I bought tamron 24-70 f2.8 . But I gave back. Because of some af issue. And I decided to buy a canon lens. And my budget is not enough for canon 24-70 f2.8. I m thinking about these two lens, 24-70 f4 and 24-105 version 2. The most important thing is sharpness at f4 for me. I watched your 24-105 review and it was really bad about sharpness. even version 2. So what can you say to me about these?I will use it for wedding photography and also "image stabilization" is important for me. Thanks.

    I might buy this lens to replace my 100 mm 2.8 macro L-series. I will not get rid of it, since it's better for serious macro (product) photography, but this macro feature seems perfect for "quick on location work" with it's 0.7x magnification (definately with todays resolutions). Especially nice for weddings. Right now I carry a dedicated macro lens for the rings. But this will be better I think, since it's also a nice backup to my 24-70 2.8, in case something happens. Same goes for all my commercial work: usually I shoot mostly on my 24-70 2.8 @ 4.0-8.0. So this would make a great backup, besides being a macro as well. Also, it's not too heavy or large, which is always nice for a backup lens.

    This Video is very good, I am new to photography, I just have a question about the f/4 mark. Does f/4 mean this lens has a fixed aperture of f4? (in your video, you compare the images with not only f4 but f5.6 and so on, if the aperture is fixed how did you change the aperture?) Thank you so much!

    • @joevalenza2822
      @joevalenza2822 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yunbo Wang No, it is Not fixed at f/4. It goes all the way up to around f/22. The f/4 in the name is basically just saying what the widest, or biggest aperture is f/4.

      For a good idea of sharpness, take a look at my review videos. This 24-70 will give you a wider angle but won't zoom in as tightly. I really like the 24-105 - I think that's a better choice overall

    mainly for portrait, landscape, buildings and just everyday-stuffs.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the differences are obvious. If you want a nicer zoom range and IS, then the 24-70. If you want a far brighter aperture and wider angles, the 18-35. Take a look at my review of the 18-35 to see what I thought of it

  • @Avriox
    @Avriox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a slight problem... At the moment I'm using a Sigma 18-38 and a Canon 100-400 on my 7D mark ii. I find those 2 lenses work quite nicely but the gap from 38-160 (multiplying the 100 with the crop factor of the small sensor) is quite big. So I wanted to get the 24-70 f4 because it's weather sealed and sort of closes the gap. I'd really like to have a "weather proof" lens but I'm not sure anymore what to go for. Do you have any other suggestions on what could help me out (and that is in a similar price rang).
    note: I'd need it for video work as well as normal photography

    I"m late I know but my 16-35 mm f2.8 is no longer giving me sharp images so I need a new wide angle lens. I really liked this lense because I had the 16, 24 and 35mm at my disposal. I was sure I wanted to get a prime 35mm f2 but I just found about this lens. I think it has a great assortment of focal lengths (and it has a macro feature!?) so now I"m not so sure about the 35mmg f2. I'm pretty sure I won't be using this lens (if I got it) in low light situations and If I do it'll be for group shots a wedding receptions or wide angle shots of a room on a tripod (for dark areas). In your opinion, is the Canon 35mm f2 a better lens or does this lens have more to offer?

    It has shorter zoom than 24-105mm, but can make macro shots. But, oh wait, its macro capacities are weak! I don't see any value for this lens. If I'm going to replace the kit 24-105, I think Tamron 24-70mm VC is a better choice.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently the Tamron lens is very sharp so the ultimate difference is whether you want a smaller and lighter f/4 lens, or a bigger and heavier f/2.8 one.

    • @petermitchell2729
      @petermitchell2729 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 70-200 Tamron (VC) and use it for sports photography, paired with a Canon 70d. As I often shoot under lights having the wider aperture was paramount for me, more light means I can get away with faster shutter speeds, which is important if your subject is moving. Sigma makes a very similar lens and Canon have a 2.8 that is similarly priced with no stabilization or a much more expensive and probably a little better stabilized one. For me it was a coin toss between the sigma and the tamron as the canon was out of my price range. I didn't really look at the F4 though as getting more light was key for me.
