- My favourite lens is my Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS USM but I always operate well within in it's capabilities. I rarely
In this video I try to get the most out of my lens by pushing it to it's limits.
With the weather forecast not looking brilliant I decided to head to Grizedale Forest and set myself a little challenge.
In this challenge I set out to push my lens to the max getting:
1 shop at it's widest focal length
1 shot at it's longest focal length
1 shot at it's closest focusing distance
1 shot at it's widest aperture
This challenge helped me to be more creative and to try shots that I wouldn't normally have attempted. Better than staying at home!

It's in the eye of the beholder. You didn't feel the background was out of focus enough. I found my eyes traveling from the foreground to the background and right back to the foreground over and over. To me the background was just the right amount of "out of focus" for that particular image. That's the beauty of art !!!
Thanks Frank, that is very encouraging. I think I agree with you. Perhaps I would have liked it out of focus just a touch more but not too much. In all I rather like the shot. Thanks again for your encouragement. :)
Brilliant! Loved the humor in this one - "annual run." LOL. Not accustomed to seeing you in the forest Chris, but it suits you. Overcast or dapple light days are my favorite times to be in the woods. Grizedale Forest looks like a lovely spot. Really liked the fern shot; the bench image was a great composition. I'd enjoy participating in your lens challenge, I'm in. Miguel

Another great vlog Chris. I agree with what you thought about that last image, I'm sure the bench would have still been recognisable as such a lot softer. Your B roll reminds me very strongly of my dads 1950's 8mm days (in a good way) when the family were given directions to walk from here to here while he ran all over the place in front of us. What a lovely walk, that stream looks oozing with possibilities after a bit of rain :)
Thanks Chris - are happy memories. I remember having to sit for what seemed like hours while my dad took portraits of me and my brother back in the days when he was a keen photographer. There are plenty of streams to photograph in the Lake District. Will be looking for opportunities during the summer - perhaps this is the year that I will #embracethegreen for the first time. :)
Great idea for a video Chris. Certainly some simple techniques but I’ve never seen it posed as an exercise in “pushing the limits” as you call it. Well done. I would like to give it a go and I’ll try to find some time. Very busy here in my last remaining days in London.

Chris, I wouldn't say no to joining in the challenge. My 'go to' lens is a Nikon 24-85mm so broadly comparable. The weather looks crap down here for the coming week so it will give me a reason to get the boots on. By the way, my grandaughter loves the clockwork trees in that part of the world - magically seeing her enchanted and dancing to the music! Oh, and why did you not use the remote trigger for the selfie?

I didn't use the remote shutter (I assume you are talking about the app on my mobile) for 2 reasons: 1. I left my mobile in the car and 2. that wouldn't have been as funny! :)

Cheers Alan - I found it much nicer shooting in the wet forest than at other times when it has been drier. Everything was so lush. I feel inspired to return very soon.

I'm still working on a location for your last challenge but will give this a go, however I feel I might be cheating as my preferred lens is 18-135mm on a crop sensor!! Cheers Tom - reading some of these comments has helped me to realise that shooting woodland when it is wet is great because the colours seem to be so much more intense. In future I shall make sure to #embracethegreen. :)

Great video Chris and what a good idea your last image was great but in my opinion the background subject did not have enough separation from the foreground if it did I think it may have been more out of focus 👍🤓

Nice vlog Chris, well thought out and executed I thought. Matching the weather conditions with the location is half the battle with photography I am finding out..plus having these little personal challenges keeps up the motivation and helps you learn..i would be definitely up for the challenge..
Thanks Martin - I genuinely don't think there is much to landscape photography. It's just about being in the right place at the right time. I enjoyed this challenge, it pushed me to try things that I wouldn't normally and has opened my eyes to what is possible. I just loved how vivid the greens were in the forest at this time of year just after the rain. Definitely want to explore woodland photography a bit more this summer.

Another great video Chris. Well thought out use of a poor weather day. If I want a selfie without stressing about the time, I use the intervalometer to take a shot every 2 or 3 seconds. Then you can move around the frame and change pose etc. Just stand still for 3 seconds in each pose to make sure you got that shot. I don’t want this to be the end of your “annual run” though!
I could have done that Paul but for 3 reasons. 1. the 6D does not have a built in intervalometer 2. my shutter release doesn't have an intervalometer and most importantly 3. that wouldn't have been as funny! :)
What a beautiful place! Each video frame, a photo! Loved the photo of the bridge and of the bench, although you are right, it didn't work as planned, it needed a wider aperture for a more blurry background. I also liked this idea (challenge) and although I don't participate ( 😥 ), you are always giving me new ideas to practice with!
I think you should give it a go Nek - you don't have to send me your images but it will really stretch you creatively and to push you to experiment.
Loved this yes.. a change of pace somewhat to what we are used to.. but a lively and informative piece on your favourite lens... very well done !!!! That was a close call of the selfie, but hey.. what a Great image with you looking upward :) Yes not too keen on the last image... F4 you say.... I think the bokeh should have been a bit better ? ... maybe the lens damage factor also affecting it ? because I loved the image of the fern leaf prior.. awesome. :) Another Great Vlog... and not a mountain top in sight... you can master it all if you try Chris :) :) :) ( in the correct location now I hope LOL )

Ooooh, did the best dressed landscape photographer on TH-cam get a swanky new car? What was the challenge again...I got side tracked! Always good to see you Chris and also glad to see you wrestling with the mind at the end. It's not just me then! I thought all your images gave a good representation of the task you set yourself and yes, it's good to challenge yourself with settings out of your comfort zone. Being a nature photographer for many years before turning to landscapes, I am became accustomed to using lenses mostly wide open and at the longer focal lengths! Generally speaking, nature photography necessitates the complete opposite settings to those that we use in landscape photography (not always though!).
Hi Simon, not a new car, this is mine, the LandRover is Mrs Sale's. I guess being a nature photographer would mean that you are more accustomed to using different settings. I am very much a 1 trick pony but I do think I am starting to develop an interest in macro photography. Who knows where that will lead. Probably to me buying yet another lens! :(

Nice change of pace on this Chris. Always good to test yourself. One thing though - your estimation of "30 or 40 metres" is significantly off. I mean on a grandious scale. Please don't go into architecture!
I've always wondered about lenses with a macro switch on them...why do they have a switch? Do you know? What's the problem if not having it switched to "on" all the time? Does it slow down the auto focus at normal ranges?
How far do you think it was then Jeff? 60-70 metres? :) You can't witch on the macro function unless you are at 70mm and once it is switched on you can't zoom out again. I have no idea why that is. Auto focus? What's that then? :)
@@ChrisSalePhoto Interesting. I guess there's no point having a 24mm macro lens. There must be another bit of glass or something at the top end of the lens that engages when you switch to macro.

I like the concept of this video Chris. Definitely something I will do next time I'm out. Like you I want to learn the limits of my lenses, but also train my myself to better organize my thought process of composing images. I love the woods when it's wet, the colors and contrast are so much more intense. Again, great video Chris and thanks for sharing. Annual run... don't you hate it when that happen?
I hate my annual run, I am not built for such exuberance. Just thinking about it makes me want to go and lie down. I really enjoyed shooting in the damp woodland. I know exactly what you mean about the intensity of the colours. Perhaps I shall #embracethegreen more often! :)
The one man miracle! Nice one and greetings from Australia! I fell off my chair the last 15 secs of your video .. that was hilarious! Must say, you are an inspiration for budding photographers. If that last shot was taken at 70mm FL then clearly from where you were standing (the focussing distance) F/4 was not good enough to give you that narrow DOF you were after. So you'd have to move away a bit more from the subject for a more narrow DOF. Also, remember there are tables to calculate DOF (front and back) given FL, FD and camera/lens type. One other interesting point is that usually there is more DOF behind the subject as opposed to in front of the focussed subject, generally 2/3rds behind and 1/3rd in front. It is very interesting to create DOF based on several factors that one must take into consideration. I enjoyed your video and the peaceful atmosphere. Nice one man production .. no doubt clever!
Video has a nice pace, a very cool style… and I love the forest. I have that 24-70 and love the macro function. It focuses very close, don't know the numbers, but it's clooooooose! LOL

Good exercise Chris... with the camera I mean , not the 40 cm dash !! :) Seriously though, little projects like this is something I should set myself when I want to get out - I find that sometimes I haven't got a purpose to just go out and shoot, too easy to stay at home and watch loads of you tube videos :) Lovely shot of the fern. The 24-70 f4 is one of only two lenses I have left in the bag since switching to Panasonic 4/3rds but I have kept them back to put on my Canon A2 35m Film camera. I took it out of the bag to test - although I didnt take a shot but reckon at 70mm I can focus at about 30 cms - measured from the end of the barrel where it's attached to the camera and a rule. I need to get a new battery for this camera as I have a role ofg film in there with a couple of shots left - but the battery is nearly empty.
40cm Alan! You cheeky bugger! Little challenges like this really help me to learn new stuff and try stuff out without fear of failure. I was certainly able to focus more closely than 30 cms which has me a little worried.
@@ChrisSalePhoto lol..... I meant inches, or was it feet? Surely not yards (with these measurements you can tell I am old school) Things is for the close up do you measure from the end of the lens or where the sensor is - thats a point we might have to look into?
Yards - I read about those in a book once Alan. It was a very old book! :)
I liked the video Chris especially the wide shot of the bridge. Out of curiosity I just checked my 24-70mm lens and it focused down to about 4 or 5 cms before it gave up.

Great Video Chris. Regarding the last image I thought you got DOF just right - the bench was blurred but one could still appreciate the detail of the carving on it. And the fern popped due to it being sharp. But the bottom left diagonal of the image is dark and ugly. I wonder if it could be shot straight on, masked in PS and Gaussian Blur the parts you want out of focus. Hindsight is a wonderful thing - as they say. PS your car looked great. Oh, and the preening rehearsal bit at the end of the video - Hilarious 👍
Cheers Andy - like I say, I like the shot (even more now I can see it in Lightroom) but it's not a great example of using a shallow depth of field. The bottom left doesn't bother me too much, not sure my attention was taken there until you mention it. I do see what you mean however.
Great shots, Chris! the favorite for me is the fern photo (the macro shot). the last age could use more.blur, agreed. The only way that can be achieved by shooting f4 would be at the longest possible focal length (in your case 70mm) I'm taking up the challenge for the 4 shots, I'm torn in using my standard or telephoto zoom, I hope I'll have the time to go out this week. Perhaps a bit more distance between foreground and background elements would give more bokeh. You did make some nice images out of the flat light. I'm in for the challenge. Traveling to the mountains and lakes of northern New York this weekend, so hope to have some fertile subjects for images. Thanks again for trying to get us involved.

I loved this video Chris! I really like the idea of "Where is that path going?". I thought the fern/bench shot was good. I really liked the fact that the bench was not totally blurred. Maybe that is just my opinion. When you were describing it, I was not sure how it would come out, but I felt like it came out really good. I would enjoy more challenges like this. I will try to do this one and take your challenge, but I don't know how soon I could get the pictures to you.

Neat concept with this video Chris. I enjoyed the single leaf image a lot. I do absolutely love my 24-70 mm as well. I’m in the process of selling my 21mm. Also thinking of purchasing a Benro myself I see you’ve had yours for a few months now. How do you like it?
Hi Diego - I have the 16-35 as well these days but now that the 24-70 is fixed I can't see me using it all that much. I am pleased with my Benro. It is great to have a sturdy tripod that extends above my head height (I am 6'5" or 195cm). It is quite heavy though so I don't think I'll be using it when I go on long hikes with my camera.

At f/4 I suspect you needed more distance between the foreground subject and the background if you wanted noticeable blurring of the background (or getting in closer to that minimum focal distance to the foreground). But still a nice image, and good video -- may or may not try my hand at it. :)
Yep, no doubt that would have improved things. I think the subject was all wrong for that type of shot. I should have looked for something with more separation between the subject and the background. One the other hand things would start getting a bit boring if I got everything perfect all of the time. :)
Nice exercise! I did something akin to this last Wednesday while exploring a garden only I had a 100mm f/2.8 macro on most of the time so I have pinhead sized ants crawling across a peony bud that more than fills the frame and plants in focus that are bracketed between others that are blurred to nearly recognizable.
Was that the Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L? I have been drooling over that lens for a couple of weeks but I have promised not to buy any more gear this year. So for now the mock-macro effect I get from the 24-70 will just have to do.
@@ChrisSalePhoto The Tokina at-X PRO M 100mm F2.8 D Macro for Nikon F-mount. It's very sharp and has a really nice long manual focus throw

Last week-end I did a 20-image panorama at 10 mm (the widest length) and F-4 (the fastest aperture). I also tried a 50-image panorama with the 50 mm prime at F-2. That one didn't quite stitch together correctly. Oh, yeah, I push the limits every way I can on a regular basis and suspect that doesn't surprise you in the least.
No Theresa it does not surprise me in the slightest. I suspect you also did it in the dark... ...while it was raining... ...with one hand tied behind your back... ...and whilst standing on one leg! :)
@@ChrisSalePhoto Definitely in the dark (it was the full arch of the Milky Way) but with a chair and a drink handy so I could sit down when I got tired during all those 30-second shots. Oh, and it was in a parking lot, so there was no hiking involved. :>
Great video Chris. If you wanted more bokeh from the F4 shot, you could have moved back a few meters and zoomed in more. The increased focal length exaggerates the background blur. Love the outtake at the end by the way.
Thanks Rich, in hindsight I think I should have gone for an entirely different subject. But I learnt a lot and that was the main thing I suppose.

Great video! Love the images as well....you know me and macro! The images of the bench and ferns is great but there needed to be more separation between them for the bench to be blurred more than the ferns. I would love to try this with my new 12-100mm f4 PRO lens I just got. Sounds fun....

I'd say over all a great video. Good content, About that last shot, it depend. What did you intent the viewer to see? My eyes were drawn to the vibrant bright bracken.

Damn, the effort put into creating this video. I'm guessing you use tripod the entire shooting eh, and it's kinda Nat geo style narration as well. Kudos for the One Man Show.
I don't have this lens (I have a Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 instead). But the specs listed in B&H show a minimum focus of 20 cm (7.87 inches) and a macro reproduction of 1:1.4. So, pretty good.
Re the fern image, IMO the bench is too close to the fern to get much blur, especially given the distance you were from both. Had you moved closer to the fern, the bench's distance from you would farther away relative to the fern's distance from you. This would narrow the depth of field when focusing on the fern, so the bench would be blurrier.
I think you are bang on John, I should have found another subject with more separation between the subject and the background. If I were taking this shout again I would be tempted to try it with the wide angle lens at 16mm allowing me to get as close to the fern as possible. Every day is a school day as they say! :)
Mine focuses as close as about 3 inches, or 7.5cm, in macro mode. It gets VERY close to things. I like that lens a lot, but getting the best shots out of it is a tricky thing, it seems.

Interesting, I use a 24-70 f4 often with an ef12 extension tube, one observation you might find an angle finder useful.
An angle finder? What's one of those then? Sorry for my ignorance. I have a set of inexpensive extension tubes at home. I bought them just before I broke my lens and have never used them. You have just reminded me. I feel a macro video coming on! :)
May I ask y u use a ND filter since it’s cloudy?

Hi there. No ND filters in the video. I did use a polarizer for 3 of the 4 shots. This was to reduce the glare that you get from wet foliage which just cause hot spots in the image. Hope that helps.

I have the same lens and i can focus in macro mode about 4-5 cm to the subject from the front element.

Yeah, I know. Kept that a secret didn't I. It was fun to try to be a bit creative and try a few different things, particularly as the weather was so flat an boring. I liked the shot in the end, but probably doesn't make the most of the wide aperture. Hope you get down to the woods this summer and show off some of those sweet macro skills you've been developing. :)

I see the point of pushing what you can do with you're lenses i personally look back to my Fuji HS30 EXR days when there was only one fixed lens and i had the camera down pat and i had some beautiful images.
But jumping forward two and a half years and my new Nikon set up and five lenses the creative choices are countless.
I will admit i don't own the Nikon equivalent lens to yours but i have seen lots of your work and think it's brilliant you run yourself down too much.
So to the vlog, I love the piece of b-roll with the key stuck in the tree for me that would have made a great short depth of field shot.
Love that bridge shot and wide view though skelwith bridge is a more pretty bridge there's a hint for you !!!.
Have you seen the pixl TW 283 an infa red shutter release with an 80 mtr range Rachel Lerch fellow vlogger is going to review it soon?.
Shot 3 the fern this is for me where my dedicated 105mm macro lens comes in i have a 70-300mm sigma but you can only start macro at 200mm so getting macro shots from about six feet away always bothered me.
Shot 4 a lovely composition though i do agree with you the background could have been a bit more blurred out but if that's the limit of the lens used then fair enough.

Hi Mike - wow, lots to consider here. The key shot would have worked but it needed something in the background to 'blur out' as it were. There was no interest there. I could have used that for the selfie putting myself out of focus. That would have been a much better shot. I am certainly considering getting a dedicated macro lens. The Canon EF 100mm 2.8L looks just the ticket. Will have to start saving my pennies, until then the 24-70 will just have to do. See you soon mate.

HI George, I think you are right. In hindsight getting close up to the 'key' sticking out of the tree right at the start of this video would have been a better example of using a wide open aperture.
@@ChrisSalePhoto I have the Nikon D850 and all prime lenses so I guess that puts me out of your test run, I did just buy a Nikon 200-500 zoom the only Zoom I own and it the Cheapest Lens I own

That's the other side of the country to me so I don't know it well but it is a wonderful stretch of coast line. If you like seascapes it's a great place to visit. 50 UK based vloggers? Are there really that many these days? I am surprised you find the time to watch them all.
9:20. No the background wasn't "bokeh'ized" one bit. That being said, with an f4, it's hard to do that unless you're in macro mode and pretty much right in front of it. I got one yesterday that had a pretty good bokeh, but I had to get close to it, flip the focus to manual and pretty much gave up incorporating the outside into any recognizable composition. So this is one of those situations where I can get either a glorious landscape. Or I can get a close close close up. But if I'm looking for a change to play the aperture game, for a shot like that, I'd most likely have gone to my 35mm f2 prime, and opened the aperture and just adjusted distance via tripod.
If you had to choose 1 lens to use which would it be, the 16-35 or the 24-70? Reason im asking im thinking of dropping to a single lens i as rarely use my 70-200 or my 14mm prime, i mainly use my 24-85. I will be getting the 2.8 version as i shoot the stars, i use a 6d aswell as its superb at night.
24-70 every day and twice on Sundays! It is so versatile. I shoot a lot at 28, 35 and 50mm + it has a pseudo macro mode. I did shoot with just this lens for 2 years and it is still the one that I always start with.
thought you might say that, ive bought a smaller bag that has room for my camera and 2 lenses at a push, but with a compartment for filters and food and drink on top, keep thinking to myself why do I need all this stuff when I pick a pretty heavy bag up. I think we get drawn into thinking we need all this gear when one sharp lens should be enough.
Glad I came across this video . I own this lense, and unlike you I barely use it because I’ve been sticking to prime lenses, but I must say that I should be paying more attention to this lense . It is a great lense and in my option better than the 2.8 because of its macro function
What type of ND filter is that you are using bud?
Minimum Focus Distance 7.87" / 20 cm according to the specifications
If that is the case I am able to focus way more closely than that these days. It has me wondering if it's been fixed properly.
I can definitely focus much closer than 20cms. I don’t know if it varies according to subject but I just focused on the lettering on a bottle label and it easily focused to 4 or 5 cms without hunting
Lens length = 3.7 in, Front of camera body to sensor = approx 1 in, filter holder & filter about .5 in = 5.2 in. That puts the front of your filter at 2.7 in which looks about right. Be sure you are measuring subject to sensor distance.
Regarding the 10 second timer and running into the shot.... I use the Canon app along side my 6d. Still had the 10 second timer on but could hit the remote shutter on the app when I was in frame
I did just that in a video a few weeks ago Chris but on this occasion I decided not to for 2 reasons. 1. I left my phone in the car and 2. it wouldn't have been as funny! :)

You did ok the wood looks thick and dense.
Your'e a clever sod aren't you! You check the weather forecast and it says overcast and miserable so the default location is the woods. However rather than put out another vlog about woodland photography you turn it into a lens challenge and push your creative boundaries....that's clever and well produced! I haven't tried this lens's macro setting yet, but the 'bokeh' doesn't seem great however I did like the fern shot.
Clever? I dunno about that Jamie, I guess I get lucky some times. :) I think unless you have a dedicated macro lens (I keep drooling over the EF 100mm f/2.8L) it'll do just fine. The trick seems to be to find a clean background and make sure there is as much separation as possible. This is something that I didn't achieve with the fern shot so some scope for improvement there.

As promised I checked out my minimal focus distance o. Macro setting on canon 24/70 lens, mine is about 25cm and pin sharp.
Oh dear Gary, I can focus down to about 5cm. I wonder if that means that my lens has not been fixed properly.

The selfie would have turned out better if you had turned around so it looked like you were walking down the path.
Now that would have been better, maybe even include a bit of motion blur. Something to remember in future.
