Yeah when they pitched Alien to the studio, they billed it as "Jaws in space." Jaws is famous for building suspense by not showing the shark very much, and Alien very much followed the same strategy.
On every level, this is a brilliant movie. The next one, "Aliens", is superb too - and is completely different ... What would happen if extremely well armed soldiers had to face off against an infestation of Aliens? In James Cameron's hands - pure magic! Surely one of the best action movies in cinema history.
A little "behind the scenario": there is a long chunk of the movie missing. In it, Repley found that all her team bodys are stock in a room by the monster. She goes in and found the captain still alive but beging for her to kill him. The alien don't attack them to eat but to produce new alien with their body. So, Repley burn the room and run to escape the ship. All of this is cut. I like the absence of this scene, but... I also like the extra detail.
It's a fantastic idea: people hatch juvenile xenos, people are also transformed by the adult xeno into eggs which hatch facehuggers. Great thematic circle. But the question is then, what does the adult xeno eat if not the people? And there isn't an answer unless the people transitioned into eggs is cut. It also negates the existence of a Queen in ALIENS that lays eggs but that's not why the scene in ALIEN was cut.
@@matttriano In Aliens, Cameron took that idea and put it in his film. Now what are the Xeno eating? Well... When the new born hatch...you don't need the human corps anymore...right?^^

Ripley is one my favorite movie heroes. Not because she's fearless, or has superpowers, or because everybody likes her, but because she was real. She was scared sh!tless, but did what had to be done. Also love the atmosphere and pacing of this movie by Scott. Built a thick environment, with some real tension. Hard to believe this is a 70's movie.
THe suspension of disbelief is always important for any story with an audience. Hard Sci-Fi needs the science to go 'oh yes that makes sense' to the audience or it'll just ruin the suspension. aka. it breaks it. It's the same with bad acting, poor effects, etc. :p

When I first met my wife she told me how much she enjoyed horror movies so I asked her what were her favorites... She listed a who's who of B-rated slasher flicks like Friday the 13th. I was like, "You ever see Alien?" She had never heard of it so I suggested we watch it. She learned real quick the difference between a true horror and a slasher flick. She still hasn't really forgiven me... LOL
Structurally, Alien is a slasher movie, but has actors, writers and a director who are an order of magnitude better than most movies in general, let alone slashers. (Similarly, Aliens is a zombie movie.)
@@kba702 I disagree. What marks a true Horror Movie is it's ability to truly scare you with the building of tension and suspense. What you don't see is just as scary or even more scary than what you do see. Slasher flicks are just a series of jump scares and gore. Their is no real tension or suspense in a slasher flick. Alien is a true Horror classic in this regard. Some of the scariest moments in Alien are when nothing really happens. It's the suspense of something happening that scares you and the resulting tension. Aliens had this to a lesser degree as well. The 3rd movie was more of a slasher flick however.
Very true. And in Die Hard it is the director letting go of Alan Rickman/Hans Grubber and he pretended to drop him. They could not make that reaction today because too much CGI or actor Unions denying them the right to pull these tricks.
Not true, they all knew what was going to happen but it was the amount of blood that spurted onto Veronica Cartwright that freaked her out and the reaction was kept in.
@@julianmarco4185 Actually, the Hans Gruber thing was a little different than you said -- they told Rickman that they would drop him on the count of 5, and they dropped him early, which is why he had that look of surprise.
Hey Natalie. Love these instances of TH-cams recommended giving you gold. I think I found you after you finished the Star Wars reactions, because I get all excited when I saw you start Lord of the Rings. I just turned 28, so you can imagine discovering this for the first time shortly because the movies came out. This was the first thing that I found on my own, and took place before my eyes as a 10-13 year old. Couldn't have been a more perfect fit for a kid who was an Anglophile and already well into serious military history, so these were mind blowing and an obsession for several years there. You're one of my favorite channels because you are an intelligent and interesting movie watcher, always have a good way of looking at things. As for Alien, this gave me the inspiration to finally check some things off my to do list. Filled up a SUV trunk at a garage sale a few years ago for almost nothing including an Alien series VHS Collectors Box, and it's been sitting on my to watch shelf since. I've also got a to do a DIY project to store my VHS collection, so I'm gotta get something done and watch this (and then your reaction :D). lmao, yup. @26:08 Talking is often a distraction in a movie. It draws your attention away from what's going on onscreen. Me too (born '75) i see return of the Jedi at theater ! My classics are Back to the future, all Star Wars (Yeah, all, even the Disney aera), Mad Max, Commando, Gremlins, Halloween, Terminator, Predator, Aliens, Indiana Jones... And the Marvel now.
Fun fact: when they shot the dinner scene, the majority of the actors didn't know what EXACTLY was going to happen to Kane. So when an alien creature bursts out of his chest, and (fake) blood squirts all over their faces (which they weren't expecting), their reaction was quite real. A lot of them didn't like Ridley Scott after that :D
Its a fantastic movie!! The filming, the lighting, the story, the set design. Its claustrophobic and scary as hell, but it is beautiful and a true masterpiece!!
At the beginning Brett was happy to split from the others, because as far as the crew knew, the Alien was tiny and not a threat. Also the reason Brett was sent after the cat was because it would keep tripping their motion sensor and stop them finding the alien.
For 70's and 80's horror that still stands up today, I highly recommend you watch American Werewolf in London, The Thing, 70's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser 1&2. I'd also really recommend you watch Evil Dead 2 and 3, which are more horror comedy but still classics.
Fun fact: Ian Holm hated milk so that scene with his head on the table was especially hard on him. The android face on the doll looked so weird because the latex didn't dry properly and they didn't have time in the schedule to re-do it.

2001 is a classic - for me, one of the very greatest works of art ever made. It's slow - like space travel is ... but so epic in scale. Richard Strauss's "The Blue Danube" is a highlight - played in its entirety while a space shuttle goes through the docking procedure with the rotating space station. In fact, I'll let you into a personal secret ... Every New Year's Day - I wake up with a hangover, and the Vienna concert is being shown live on TV ... when they do their second encore (which is always the "Blue Danube") .... I slowly get out of bed in slow motion - as if I'm in zero gravity. Yes. A 19th century piece of music = space travel. Kubrick was a genius.
Bless your heart to put yourself through that for our viewing pleasure! Lol. You were great! Loved your reactions! Could not have tolerated it if I was watching it for the first time, but I've seen it several times. It's iconic at this point; the pinnacle of sci-fi for me. Thank you. Lol.
Natalie Gold Here's a bit of very obscure trivia about "Alien". In the film you can see the alien character drooling a lot, and the drool was a methyl cellulose, a powder, dissolved in water to form a clear solution, you can adjust the viscosity by the amount of water you add to it. Among its uses is one of the adhesives used by book restorers for patching torn paper. The more viscous stuff was KY, as pointed out by other correspondents. Also, the other female crew member was played by Veronica Cartwright, the older sister of Angela Cartwright, both with quite illustrious acting careers.
Your reaction to this movie is perfect! It made my day. I really enjoyed it. You should keep on reacting to more horror movies. We all thank you very much.
I watched all of your LoTR videos and Star Wars and thought to myself: "I kinda hope she reacts to the Alien franchise if she hasn't seen it yet." You read my mind! Hope you watch the second one as well.
Funny story: I saw "Alien" back when it first came out at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Since this was a big name theater to appear in, there was a sort of "display" you walked through while waiting in line for the movie of props and parts of the set (like Mother's "brain room")... ...and a whole full-size diorama of the eggs. People coming in would go over and look at the eggs, checking them out. People *leaving* the movie would take a *wide* arc around the eggs, basically staying as far away as the walls of the theater would let them... 😁
Natalie: "Oh, it got so big so fast!" Me: That's what she said. Natalie: It's huge! ...Actually, I'm surprised it fits in here!" Me: That's what she said!!
One of the greatest isolation movies of all time and best use of practical effects. Also, if you look closer at the Xenomorph's dome, you can see a human skull on the inside of it
Did you know that the Bio of Dallas has him working as a Warrant Officer on a ship before the Nostromo and shows his employer as Tyrell Corporation? Blade Runner/Aliens shared universe(Ridleyverse) confirmed?
John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982), not the 2011 remake. I imagine it's the one you were thinking of, but you know, just to make sure she doesn't watch the bad one by mistake.
Fun fact: all the props in the movie worked. Sure, some were just moving parts and blinky lights, but they worked. And the flamethrowers? There are pictures of the actors "training" (playing) with them. FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.
As long as you're going through the classics, I have some suggestions: Blade Runner Princess Bride Casablanca The Sound of Music The Kid (Charlie Chaplin) 2001: A Space Odyssey
There is a cut scene, where you find what the Alien did to the missing crew. Sense the Alien was a Male Drone, it was preparing Dallas and the rest into Eggs. By using it's saliva.[ you get to see the human bodies being broken down]. the scene shows Dallas begging to kill him. Next the reason the Creature looks human, is because it takes on the DNA characteristics of the host. In the cut Scene you also see the Alien was Turing a room into a nest. Also done by his Saliva/corrosive acid, the walls look like the inside of the lower doomed ship. I think this was better then just only a Queen, it was most terrifying to see Dallas being absorbed into a egg shape.
Love the reactions, Natalie! I also second the motion for Fifth Element - such an enjoyable movie - I think you'd have a lot of fun with it. It's a shame you didn't get to watch the director's cut of this movie, which includes the Dallas/Egg scene Lisa refers to. If you can get the Director's Cut of Aliens, there's a bit more character information about a couple of the main characters (no spoilers) that I think you'd enjoy, while losing none of the action of the movie in general. Personally, I'd like to see you do more horror based on your reactions here, which were a riot! Bring Tyler in for backup if necessary! ;-)
I love not only your reactions, but you seem to have a genuine love of cinema with an appreciation of the performers, the art department and the lighting design. All of which make these movies classic. One thought ahout the new mic; see if your editing software has a dynamics compressor so you can balance out your levels between your talking and screaming volume. It'll also allow you to record at a lower level to avoid that distortion, while still having good volume on your end product.
I understand you're "re-watching" this one... I actually saw it in the theaters, when it was first released. From the point where the "hugger" jumped out at William Hurt's character, the tension just NEVER quit (though for a great scene, check out William Hurt's scene in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs," which is such an amazing spoof!) The first time I saw it in the theater, when the cat popped out of the locker, I was "That's it, I'm out-a-here" and left the theater. Eventually I went back and saw it from start to finish.
19:50 The Director's Cut includes a scene deleted from the original, in which Sigourney Weaver finds Tom Skerritt and Harry Dean Stanton cocooned in a nest, showing that the alien prefers its victims still alive as hosts for its eggs.
I would love to see a "Pitch Black" Reaction. Dim the lights behind you!! That's it. Keep the back walls dark during your reaction is all I ask. Thank you from Alberta Canada. Keep up the great work!
I was in a training class at Fort Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis when this movie came out. I walked to the cinema off base about a mile away. I watched the movie and was scared shitless. On the walk back to base at about midnight, I took a shortcut down some railroad tracks. Along the way I kicked a piece of ballast which flew into the weeds along the tracks and a cat jumped out just as it squalled. I nearly had a heart attack.
I didn't fully appreciate Alien until I saw it in theaters properly for the rerelease recently... now I'm a complete snob about it and know pretty much everything there is to know about it. The brilliant thing is that you know so little about these characters and yet you 100% "know" them because of how they're so incredibly acted... Ripley of course is the most developed but she's clearly the no-nonsense badass who does get emotional at times (i.e. when she breaks down shortly before the reveal with Ash), Parker is the sort of comic relief (I think about "the bonus situation" and "cornbread" constantly now) who's also smart and ultimately good-hearted, Brett is as dumb as bricks but funny as shit too because of that (the whole theater laughed at his death scene during the rerelease), Lambert is the quite literally wide-eyed ingenue but honestly who of us wouldn't be reacting like her in that situation... Dallas is the hardass who's a little too obstinate for his own good, arguably his decisions start the whole movie (but Ash intervened so honestly I think they never had a choice...), Ash is a complete fucking ruthless monster, I can't believe I thought he was on their side my first time watching it... there are so many clues. Even Kane feels like a fleshed-out character despite having maybe 5 minutes of screen time and only being known for his death. Legitimately in the scene right before "the scene" with Kane where Kane has woken up John Hurt's acting is so subtle and fantastic because Kane is making these troubled facial expression while saying he's pretty much fine. He's less of a "Crewman #6" (get the reference?) and more of the sacrificial lamb. There's a deleted scene that adds pretty much nothing to the film where Kane is just fixing himself what looks like cereal and it's literally just John Hurt on screen for about 20 seconds with like 3 lines but even that adds depth to his character. (Never understood why his costume was a v-neck going down to his pelvis... was that Hurt's decision?) Sorry for geeking out this movie is incredible... Aliens is great in its own way but is very very James Cameron 80s... Alien could be made 50 years in the future and would still be almost just as incredible.
Shiny idea! If Natalie gets ready to do a series, this would be one she'd like and wouldn't require a huge time commitment with just one truncated season (unfortunately...)
20:06 "Man. If you want to add suspense to _any_ movie, at the end, add a timer." A ticking clock of some sort is a _defining_ trait of _every_ thriller. The most compelling protagonist is one who does _not_ have time on their side.

I hate to say it but I too was bored to death watching Blade Runner. It's just a very slow-burn kind of movie, nothing ever seems to happen. It's just Harrison Ford walking around being broody for a couple hours.

This movie had one of the best promotional tag lines of all time, "In space, no one can hear you scream."
Siegahertz Carmin : yep, and I saw that deleted scene on the ‘extras’ section of the blue ray.
Well... When the new born hatch...you don't need the human corps anymore...right?^^
That scene is included in the Director's Cut released in 2003
That scene should have been left in.

“Breaking the suspension of disbelief” is the phrase you were looking for at the end

LOL
Good man.
But she married ya! 🤣
So I guess Stephen King's 1922 would be out of the question?
I always love the fact John Hurt came back do reprise his role from this in Spaceballs. "Oh no...not again"
Interesting side note: Ridley Scott didnt tell anyone except John Hurt about the chest burster so he could get the real reaction from them.
Very true. And in Die Hard it is the director letting go of Alan Rickman/Hans Grubber and he pretended to drop him.
They could not make that reaction today because too much CGI or actor Unions denying them the right to pull these tricks.
If I was one of those actors surprised like that I'd be looking into the camera saying WTF lol
Not true, they all knew what was going to happen but it was the amount of blood that spurted onto Veronica Cartwright that freaked her out and the reaction was kept in.
@@gameofthrows9357 They knew that Kane wp ui led die and the alien would appear. Just not how grotesque it would be.
@@julianmarco4185 Actually, the Hans Gruber thing was a little different than you said -- they told Rickman that they would drop him on the count of 5, and they dropped him early, which is why he had that look of surprise.

I think I found you after you finished the Star Wars reactions, because I get all excited when I saw you start Lord of the Rings. As for Alien, this gave me the inspiration to finally check some things off my to do list. I've also got a to do a DIY project to store my VHS collection, so I'm gotta get something done and watch this (and then your reaction :D).

For 70's and 80's horror that still stands up today, I highly recommend you watch American Werewolf in London, The Thing, 70's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser 1&2. 2001 is a classic - for me, one of the very greatest works of art ever made.

@@matthewtheobald1231 I certainly would. I've never understood the appeal of that movie.
I'd love to see her reaction to these films: "The Shining", "An American Werewolf in London" and "Predator".
19:50 The Director's Cut includes a scene deleted from the original, in which Sigourney Weaver finds Tom Skerritt and Harry Dean Stanton cocooned in a nest, showing that the alien prefers its victims still alive as hosts for its eggs.
I read the book , same thing it cocooned them , for its queen, but their was no queen, it was just on instinct, like a worker bee I guess.

Did that teach you not to walk, in the dark, a route you don't know?
I vote for a reaction series, "Firefly" followed by the movie "Serenity"
