    That's wild. I had no idea how much the SQ-1 inherited from an older machine. The SQ-1 is such a useful little tool, even with more advanced sequencers I wouldn't get rid of it.

    A tip: try to find an MS50 expander to complete your MS set-up: you'll get another VCO, a S/H, a ring mod, lots of patch points and a volt-VU meter to top it all. Sadly, not easy to find now at a reasonable price but definitely worth a try. And there is a lot of complementary modules (MS-01 to 04), CV/gate interface, signal processor, foot controller and modulation pedal which create a very moog like ecosystem, rival at that time if the Roland system 100 one. Had to sell my system 100 in 1985 but I kept all my korgaphernalia and never regretted it!

    I use the SQ10 with my other sequencers and I love it. By the way, I find it very useful 😉It's big and clunky can't perform functions like modern sequencers. In combination with other MS synthesizers such as the MS20 and MS50 it actually delivers very interesting results.

  • @JSlackArt

    Dude these things were so whacked out, I remember reading about it when I got my hands on a ms20 midi controller years ago and in the manual they talked about this and the sq and the ms10 and basically said how whacky they are, for serious! I know about your love affair with ms10 I'm starting to get it, when I use my ms20 clone I'm mostly using just one oscillator anyway, but I do use that external signal processor all the time, I do want an actual korg tho I'm currently missing the keyboard and really want to use it my live setup, but listen to me praddle on, great video I'll get to the museum one day, each day we get closer to me visiting Europe again and you can be sure the museum is on my list of places to go. Cheers!

    Super. In 1979 as a spotty 16 year old, I used to frequent Peter Bonner Musical in Eastbourne. They had one of these but had no idea how to use it, so Mr. Nerd spent hours learning on their dollar. They got a decent demo and I did buy a DX7 from them four years later ! Bonners are still trading.

    Love it! I have a Paia 4700 10 step sequencer that is a lot simpler but has trig outs on every step, single shot, and external speed. I like to use it in single shot mode triggered by the gate for attack transients, like sending it to the filter, pitch, or a vca.

    • @tinfoilcat
      @tinfoilcat ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's smaller than a eurorack module, you might want to check out the schematic on paiatalk!

    • @Error6503
      @Error6503 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like this thing has trig outs on every step. The note count is set by just patching the specific trig out to the counter reset but they could probably be used to individually trigger something else (though they undoubtedly use Korg's short-to-ground type triggers).

  • @duncan-rmi
    @duncan-rmi ปีที่แล้ว +3

    12-steps... based on a counter IC, rather than individual shift registers, so difficult to implement a skip function (see the arp 16xx sequencer for a workaround). I think the chip was also used in tv tuners.

    • @TheSynthnut
      @TheSynthnut ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Roland analogue sequencers used a TV tuner IC certainly, no idea about the SQ10 circuit though.
      I was always frustrated by lack of skip and step trigger control on the Korg, but it was nice as part of the MS universe.

    • @duncan-rmi
      @duncan-rmi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, in the SQ10 schematic I just found, it seems to be a pair of 4028s in carry-over... BCD devices... which makes the choice of 12 steps rather than 16 seem a bit odd.
      but then again, the roland 104 uses three four-stage counters with carry-over.
      maybe it's just a japanese musical thing? 😂

    • @benm5647
      @benm5647 ปีที่แล้ว

      3/4 time and waltz style music was still a lot more popular around that time than it is now. At least I think so.

  • @RayZappa
    @RayZappa ปีที่แล้ว

    You can patch the SQ10 to the 'CV In' of the MS10/20/50 to make it play notes as well. I'd not tried patching to 'Freq' jack before, as done here, but that sequences frequency modulation on the current pitch of the MS10. You could patch the A sequence to CV In and the B sequence to Freq. Just saying, I expect you know that Sam. Great to see your vintage Korg love!

    The choice for 12 steps... a bit weird. I must say, style-wise the design goes well with the MS-20, I wonder if the two where conceived as a total system (like what Yamaha had in the 80's where the DX7 was the centerpiece of a system that could be expanded with the KX-88, TX816 and the QX1 sequencer).

      Yes the SQ-10 is the sequencer for the MS series. Together with the MS50 expander module, the MS-02 interface, MS-03 signal processor and either an MS-10 or MS-20 they make up the MS system.
