- (EN/Bahasa Indonesia/Bahasa Malayu/中文) We tried PADANG food in Bali, Indonesia and absolutely loved it! Come join us on our Padang feast at Restoran Padang Sederhana in Bali, where we tried famous Padang dishes including Rendang Daging, Gulai Otak (that's BRAIN curry, by the way! our first brains!), Gulai Cincing, and so many more mindblowing Padang dishes! And it was all so affordable for such a lavish banquet - only US$10 per person! We ate till our tummies were exploding, and this time we even tried eating with our hands - a totally hands-on experience haha! Padang food is absolutely yummy and impressive. Even though I grew up in Singapore and Nasi Padang (served in the mixed plate manner like Nasi Campur) has always been a favourite, but the cooking here for the Padang food in Bali is actually quite different from the Singapore style Padang cooking and has been an absolute culinary adventure to try.

Bali is the greatest place in the world. My Mom was raised near it and told me so many great stories about the food and the beautiful people she met and could converse with.

@@JeanVoronkova Definitely no - it just isn't economical to have such a style (ie. 20+ dishes) with so low volume of interest. Interest is sporadic and for something like this to exist here you would need so many people that are interested in this - ie a dense community of Indonesians lol. Americans would like the novelty of it and try it out but it would be trendy for a while but to see it stick as a lasting business model - highly doubtful. Unless they did like a hybrid approach. There are restaurants here that serve like 6-8 items? Something like that.

They're more like condiments so we eat 'em as a dipping, smear 'em on rice, or mix 'em with the dishes to balancing the strong flavor. But as long as you enjoyed it then just have it your way. haha ooh we definitely followed up the scoop of sambal with a scoop of rice but we were eating by paws first time so not clever enough to do rice+sambal at the same time!! haha i love rice!

The green chilli is a must for me everytime I eat Padang dishes. It fits so well with hot rice

Great video! "Sederhana", "Trio" and "Pagi Sore" are amongst the best Padang restaurants in Indonesia. But my absolute favorite is "Pagi Sore". All the sauces there are super creamy, and the meat are super tender. Yummy!
Oh we gotta try pagi sore then, we really liked this padang meal we wanna do it more often!
@@JeanVoronkova I forgot to mention "Simpang Raya" and "Sari Bundo." But you won't find "Pagi Sore" in Bali. Only in Jakarta, Palembang and other few cities in Indonesia.

This is super cool because they are little dishes and u can get soooo many of them! It kind of reminds me of the mini dishes at Korean restaurants or like dim sum! its great cuz then u can get a variety of different foods without being too full on one specific dish! I had beef rendang before, its sooo delicious! interesting that u guys have to eat with your hands!

The proper way to eat nasi padang is to drizzle all the sauces from all the different dishes onto your rice. Then you place small portions of the proteins, veggies of your choosing and the sambal by the side of the rice. Enjoy them all together.
How can you forget about the Serunding or Fried Grated Coconut and the Koropok and Petai or Bitter Bean ?

Pro tips : I usually takeaway the nasi padang. The portion is usually bigger than dine in. And most importantly the rice absorb all the sauces from the dishes and it is 1000000x better.

Thank you for sharing this video about padang food. My wife is indonesian and introduced me to this delicious cuisine. The food is on display in the window and has mostly to be cooked prior due to the many hours that the dishes take to prepare, but it is perfectly safe for westerners to consume.

At smaller warung Padang or even at Sederhana, you can choose your toppings over a plate of rice. You choose right in front of the displays. That way maybe more cheaper and simpler, faster. Rather than the "hiding on the table" style ... either way, enjoy
...PS for bungkus/to-go the rice will be more plentiful than on the table dinning.

Thanks for your interesting video Jean and Vitaly. I enjoy watching your videos. Actually, the tradition of eating Padang cuisine is by using right hand. It's a fun way to enjoy Padang cuisine.
But for reasons of hygiene, health and politeness, you should still use a spoon or fork to take food from each small plate and place it on your rice plate. After that you can use your right hand to enjoy all the food that is already put on your rice plate. That is a local wisdom.
Hi Agus, nice one thanks for teaching us about it! Lucky we wre just dining betwen us husband n wife so the shared germs just remains between us hahaha but we'll definitely do that next time we do nasi padang hidang! it makes so much more sense n will resolve our issue with the sauce too hahaha
@Agus JrMansion, A HA!... for hygiene and politeness reason, huh? I thought by using spoon or fork to take a piece we want to eat from the serving plate so that we only pay for the piece we take. Say, there are 2 pcs of rendang in the plate, if I take only 1 piece, I pay only for 1 pc.
After being away from Indonesia for so long, I started to think eating Padang-style where they dish out ALL of their food on the table and bring back what customers dont eat is not so hygienic for the next customers as well as displaying their food by the window like that all day at room temperature, food will be easy to build bacteria over time 😊 but then I think, maybe, from cooking it with heavy spices and herbs, it preserves the food longer, not spoil easy/fast? 🤔
Anyway, I still love eating at Padang resto and if I do eat a contaminated food, I may only get diarrhea, nothing serious 🤭😆😅

All the food in the table is meant to be shared, so you should use spoon to get the food to your plate and then eat with hand. Only use hand on your own plate. Some of the dishes is for 2-3 portions, if you use hand to pick the food, it will disgust your friend… I think you’re doing fine if you eat with just your partner, but big no if you eat with families or colleagues. it’s more ethical, even not all Indonesian do that but it shows your good manner and you’re well educated. Always use clean spoon or fork for each plate to pick the food in “hidang style”… 😁

it was so good! even in Singapore the local version of nasi padang there is so addictive i used to have the same 3 dishes w rice (packet style) for lunch everyday when i was working in an office. I rememebr my fav dish at that time was some curry tempeh w beans..... ooh i miss it! Was only eating w fork n spoon though haha Singapore mah. Now we are assimilating (slowly) lol!

I love Nasi Padang! And Sederhana is one of the better nasi padang restaurants in Indonesia. Happy that they also have branches here in Malaysia. Yums!

The beef tendon is the best. I love it
When you eat Indonesian food, you should eat the 'lauk' (all item other than rice, e.g. meat, chicken, fish) together with rice at the same time. So it will not tasted too 'heavy'.
Rice will neutralize or sometimes even adding the tastiness of it.
ooh rice is definitely essential to every bite. In fact i usually find that i finish my rice too fast n hv lauk leftover heehee!

Actually they also provide us with the spoon and fork on the side of the table... and you can use them to scoop from the plate served. from the plate with kind of chicken or egg (where is easy to count) , we can eat based on piece basis instead of plate basis

ooooh yesssss Vitaly was so happy we found this... because actually we eat nasi campur a lot at a couple of regular places near our home but there's only jackfruit rendang at our places! This padang feast was only like the 3rd time in 4 months that we ate beef rendang n it was the best - super tender! yummmmz!
I think I need more rice to eat those things. Padang food is good to mix it with rice, rendang, sambal etc is good to mix them with rice. 😊
