I am also a sucker for GMT watches. The big knock for Marc is that it would probably be a bit out of the Islander price range. The movement would probably have to be the Sellita, since ETA movements can be tricky to source.
An interesting watch. I can see the price is warranted and it certainly makes sense, but not quite my cup of tea for that much money. Mostly because I wouldn't see myself wearing it enough.

That was exactly what I thought. The materials are interesting, as is the construction of it. I am not into the striped look, but it is certainly worth the money to someone who does like the look.

Question: How scratch/nick resistant (or prone) is the composite case? I understand that you would just see more of the same material beneath a cut or indentation, but grooves and nicks can be unsightly too. What is the relative hardness of the composite material?
Carbon is has quite a high 'toughness'.
I’m a composite nerd as well. That laminate is beautiful. I’m working on a project currently, getting my feet wet with machining forged carbon. I’ve got a friend laser scanning an SKX case, I’m going to try and make some cases out of various materials. I’ve had good luck with varying blends of polymer.

That watch strap dates to mid-'60s racing. Suggest something more modern than leather like the G-shock combi bracelet (gw-m5610bc-1jf). Can LIW sell them?

I love the case! I can see that it would be limiting in how often you wear it due to the color not going with everything you might be wearing. Great video as always!!!
Still heavy for a Carbon fiber case, wish they have added a alluminum movement & back case. That would have been sick! Stainless steel caseback defeats the purpose of being light.. Finally, I'd rather have 300m water resistance than 600 and have a thinner watch. Thanks for the video!
I bought my damasko mainly because the case is unique and this is very cool and i would buy this also. Manufacturers need to offer more than just polished boring metal cases.

Hey Mark. I got my ISL-05 (38mm) yesterday and I love it. Really needs screw pins tho. That bracelet was a real challenge to fit. I’m still waiting for a smaller aviator ;)

Damn, been looking for a watch to match my red/black applejack wood and carbon fiber wedding ring, this is the only watch I can find that matches. And of course it's limited and I could never afford it

Out of my price range, but if I had that to put toward a watch I would get it. Very cool. I like when watchmakers try something genuinely different. It really hard to get excited over yet another Sub homage. Very cool.

The only other layered composite case watch I've seen is a Richard Mille. So for $1,200 this seems like a great price. Like to see blue & black and green and black.

@@islandwatch Yeah! I only know about Richard Mille because I watch WRC Rally Racing. A 6 time world Champion has Richard Mille as a sponsor. So I looked up the watch and was blown away by how much they cost. Suppose I'd rather buy a nice turbo-prop airplane instead of a Richard Mille watch.

The case back says 300 piece limited edition. The numbering implies a 150 piece limited edition. The Long Island website doesn't mention limited edition at all. Anyone know which is correct?
I believe 150 of these, 150 of black/blue.
Really nice, but I would like some reassurance about the robustness of the screw down crown.
I guess time will tell. But I'm guessing the crown tube is steel.
An interesting watch, but it's out of my price range. For the black and red look, I'd have to settle for one of the Seiko 5KX stealth models, the all black with red indices version. But if I could afford it I'd definitely consider this Squale, it's one of a kind.

Interesting. In my neck of the woods (the knife industry), we refer to laminated fiberglass composite as “G10” and it’s a highly functional but completely unremarkable material.
G10 is a bit more specific than fiberglass; G10 is also a term in the printed wiring board industry.
Since you're also experienced in composite materials: what kind of resin could they have used that is not toxic so it can be worn on skin day in and day out? A friend of mine is watch maker and when he asked me to help him out making a carbon fiber casing I very strongly advised against it since resins are generally toxic. My only experience is in carbon fiber manufacturing for motorsports, I never heard of any epoxy resin that is not toxic. Not to put anyone off! Sure enough they thought of that and use skin friendly products! That is one slick watch I have to say;)
Don't forget, the caseback is DLC. So 95% of what touches you is steel.

I'm surprised that Marc didn't mention the overall weight of the piece. It must be feather light in comparison to a steel watch of same dimensions. I don't currently own a Squale, this may change that situation. I like it.
Not a feather, but certainly lighter.
This new offering from Squale really makes Hublot look incredibly overpriced, fusion of materials was once Hublot's forte, now even Squale can produce something more original. Bravo!

60 atmos would make it like a squale-matic, but 42mm diameter would make it like a 1521 or 50 atmos. am i missing something here?

Very nice watch by Squale, Marc. Love that case, bezel and strap. Squale priced it well. I was expecting you to announce the price being closer to $2000. If you haven't seen the blue version yet, you'll love it.
Invicta used that technique 3 or 4 years ago in a Swiss Made limited production run in 3 color variations of red, blue and yellow. They had Meteorite dials and were powered by the Sellita SW500. The red one is model 23560.

DLC diamond like coating, I’ve had it on a watch before and it’s not so durable cosmetically and impossible to repair... So not such a big fan, it’s microns thick, although hard it does scratch and chip if knocked...
