Horwin CR6 - Exploring the electric future

  • Tested the Horwin CR6 and the Kobra Climber to get an idea of what the so called electrical future could bring us...
I am convinced the electric motors deserve a chance... it would be a shame to keep burning fossil fuels (or hidrogen for that matter) in complex, wasteful, inneficient combustion engines when we could be using simple electric motors instead.
But its a complex subject of course... I love motorcycles just the way they are, I am not sure I want to change them too much... but I will stay open minded =D
I think Electroc bikes, e-bikes, e-motorcycles or electric motorcycles (whatever you want to call them) have a huge potentical...but there are a lot of factors at play, and I only explored a few of them... but I learned a lot, and I hope my experience teaches you something as well.

    Very good video.
The greasy chain instead of a clean belt on a urban bike is terribly cheapo. Belt is a must on a urban bike.
It's pretty expensive 6000 € for the basic and 7500 € for the Pro , more than twice the price of a Honda 125 CBF able to go to the North Cap and come back sipping 1.5 l of gas every 100 km full open throttle with minimal third world style maintenance. It's in reality the price of a 500 cc.
The autonomy is just good for going to work and getting back and eventually to go for the bread or the super (where do you put the groceries?). Forget the sunday "promenade" in the rising sun.
For downtown you do the same with an electric bicycle (NCM sells good ones at 1200 €, I have one pretty good more than 60 km full assistance as I'm almost 70), or an electric moped or scooter, 50 cc 45 km h, for around 3000 €, will be largely enough as in Paris the speed limit is 30 km h, and in most of the towns is 50 km h.
An Askoll eSpro 70 costs 4000 €, 66 km h and 95 km of autonomy announced. I've tried one; only 70 kg, good acceleration, good brakes, 16 inches wheels. You're the king of the asphalt between two red lights in the car over-saturated Paris. With a fat old guy riding high (throttle brutally on-off ) 65 km autonomy. You can take a bag between the feet. And finally all made in Italy, including motor and battery.
Even with a good BMS, I doubt that the battery will go over 15000 km without losing a serious percentage of the autonomy, and I won't be surprised that the battery will not go over 50000 km even if never charging over 95 % and never going under 15% of the capacity of the battery, except once every 3 months. So the real autonomy, while preserving the battery, is around 60-70 km. A lith-ion battery has 1000 cycles, 1200 at best. At 200 days/year 70 km day use it's 5 years of life, for less km/day if cared maybe 7 years. At 300 cycles you'll loose a good 10 %...
The price of the spare battery is terrifying, so any saving on gas and maintenance will be almost annihilated at 50-60 thousand km. As you said the ecology is dubious.
I bet that the resale value of these bikes at 45000 km with the "in final agony" original battery will be close to zero.
If the electronics, like the controller, are on the cheapo side you'll have some enraging breakdowns (pun intended).

Sorry I didnt reply earlier! I agree with everything you said!
      I pinned your comment :D
The bike was nice, I enjoyed it...but from an "economic" perspective, I don't think its worth it. Some people put and high value on owning "novelty" things so maybe this bike is more for them than for those who just seek a practical solution.
I have hope for the future though... i wouldnt mind having an EV in the future ^^

@@OFFroadOFFcourse Thanks for your kind answer. In the actual and close future state of the technology of the batteries the bikes will have a very limited range so good only for small trips. The mean problem of the Horwin it's the indecent price as you can find electric bikes giving the same urban and peri-urban service where the speed is limited, so the top speed has no real meaning for half the price and even less.
It's the same motorcycles in town ; a 125 CBF is practically as fast as a Hayabusa if you respect the speed limits. the difference is in the cost per kilometer.
Truly I like the Askoll as it has a good ratio price/efficiency and if I was commuting every day on 15 km of distance, it's the bike I would take, so my precious motorcycle would stay secure in the garage.

The point you make at 3:30 is spot on for me. Battery life, range and charging time has curbed the devlopment and general public acceptance of e-vehicles, more so for us long-distance travellers (wannabes). The fact is e-motors are so simple, trouble-free and efficient, that once they iron out those battery kinks, ICE will be downright obsolete. As a mechanical engineer who appreciates the beauty and elegance of choreographically moving parts to transmit power, progress will be a damn shame.
Good video! Well explained and amusing as always, and (special accolade coming)... more down-to-earth and clearer than F9's video on the subject.

A lot of people have been saying that the future is Hidrogen... I like that idea, but I think it would be a waste not to use electric motors. Like you said, the batteries still suck, maybe they always will.. but it would be a shame to keep using complex/heavy/oil-craving engines, even if they burn some sort of clean fuel.
As for the interview, maybe tomorrow! :D It think it will be fun!

Like Hazcat's comments... I also like your review, humor and honesty. Horwin obviously isn't paying you to promote their CR6 bikes ... (your personal opinions are truly appreciated). No promoting but no bashing either! Love it! I'm personally "on the fence" when it comes to CR6's, Super Soco's TC Max's, Evoke's ER10's, and other $5,000-$7,000 "e" cycles! I've been down-sizing my motorcycles, ... from V-Star 950, to V-Star 650, to Honda Rebel 500, and now Royal Enfield's 2022 Classic 350! ... I just don't have any "Lust" for "Pocket Rockets"! My riding is in Ohio farm country with everything I need within 10-15 miles of home ( bread & milk, beer runs, hardware stores, restaurants, etc). I enjoy 20 to 30 minute rides just for shear pleasure, so my "second bike" being an ebike, makes perfect sense as "round trips" for those things would be "do-able". However, going "Green" (when the Classic 350 gets 85+ mpg) would be a very weak "defense" for reducing "Global Warming!" (Only 17% of pollution can be contributed to vehicles! The majority is Industry and Agriculture!)
Unfortunately in the U.S. for right now, we only have Zero's and Harley's Live-wire's to choose from! $$$$$$!!! ... Hopefully we will get more choices in the coming years? Until then, I'll have to be content watching ebike reviews from you guys across the pond!
Keep up the reviews, I am thoroughly enjoying them!

Hey man, that was a brilliant comment, thank you! Indeed i was not paid.... Actually, this and the T7 were the only bikes that i reviewed that actually came from a store, all others came borrowed from friends/subscribers...i prefer it that way :D
As for ebikes...im with you. I love the concept (i know this is a controversial thing to say, but imagining a bike with no oil, radiator, exhaust, air filter, engine wear etc gives me erections!), but i dont think right now it would be a smart or even an environmental friendly choice.
      Perhaps in a few years...
I might follow up on this subject eventually... This whole "downsizing bikes" is growing in me as well since i tried the himalayan 😁😁

@@OFFroadOFFcourse I purchased a Ryobi electric Zero Turn Mower (42" cut) from Home Depot (a hardware chain store here in the U.S.) It worked well the first mowing season (mowing an hour on 50% battery, but second mowing season lasted 10 minutes, then totally quite! Nobody to "service" them! It has four 12 Volt 100 ah batteries so 48 volt system. Finally found someone to repair it and he had it 7 weeks! Both Motor controller and mowing deck blades controller were bad! $150 each to replace but covered under the 3 year warranty. Got it back but wouldn't last a half hour before draining batteries from 52V(fully charged) down to where it shuts off the mowers and you limp back to the charger! Third season it would run 10 to 15 minutes! Batteries still showing 52V before starting to mow! Anyhow, I guess that left me skeptical about buying an electric motorcycle!
After several months of telephone and email battles, Ryobi finally did agree to refund my purchase money! Since Ryobi tools are sold all over America, I consider myself lucky to get a refund. I'm not sure how warranties would be "honored" on electric motorcycle "imports" and made in America "e" bikes are priced crazy high!

Oh! Once again thank you for a very honest review, and I know these are the future, and certainly have their place, especially for city commuting, but I find it difficult enough not having a clutch and manual gearbox in my car, to give it a personality which becomes part of you, let alone taking away the beautiful sound, vibrations,.. (Yes !, I did say vibrations), and the control of a clutch and gearbox on my xt to give me the true pleasure of riding, which I don't get to the same degree riding even the beautiful, refined, modern computerized gems. Personality rules (for me anyway).. and when I m "forced" to make the change, my old gem will remain in my she as a reminder of the true nature of riding. E bike sounds "like a dork on a zip line". That was good. I was on my 84 BMW R100RT airhead and pulled up to a gas pump where there was a 16 year old boy washing car windows. He said to me "Your bike sounds like a Moped!" Unfortunately he was correct. But I still love touring on it the engine sound notwithstanding.

Man, that kid has no chill xD
Why woud he go and say something like that, even if its kinda true? hehe
I also enjoy the sound of a nice engine, but truth be told, electric or not the future doesn't seem good in terms of noise...with the new "euro 5s", emmissions and sound standarts, all bikes will sound like scooters.
The other thing is..remember when they made it illegal to smoke inside airplanes, restaurants, bars, etc? half the world said that was the most stupid idea ever, and that all bars on earth would close if they did that... well guess what, not even 1 year later and everyone agrees that was the best course of action... i believe we wil reach the same conclusion if we ever go electric.
The benefits will clearly outweight the problems.
(Can you imagine people smoking inside a plane?? with 200people inside an airtight alluminum can, flying at 900kmh, 9km up in the sky? ohh crazy times xD)

      Hey guys!
I bought the Horwin CR6 almost 2 years ago and I'm still happy with it.
I think there is not really a good argument why.
It's fun to drive it, especially because of the sound of the chain. And no, you CAN'T compare it with a scooter and driving 45 km/h!
I'm driving it quite often on streets where it's allowed 100km/h.
On a strait street it's for sure a little bit too slow with it's 92 km/h (GPS measured)
But a soon you have corners, it's beautiful to drive because of it's weight and "instant" torque.
So overall if you can get this bike around 5k Euro like I did, it's a good daily driver for somebody who knows how it is to drive a scooter and a really fast bike.
So this "in-between" is absolutely fun.

Very good and fair overview -- thanks. One question regarding 8:00 -- is the CR6 not fitted with a horn or does using it drain the battery too much ;-) I will stick with my CB125F for town work -- cheaper to buy and run, especially as I don't have to replace a battery every couple of years for thousands of euro!

As for the horn... yeah I guess that solves the problem but thats not a thing I need at all on a "real bike"...and it would be a shame to have "an electric future", where everything is silent except for the constant cacophony of horns, like you are living in Cairo xD

Good to see a video targeting that topic. I guess I will write more later but 2 things should be stated right now. First, there exist Electric Enduros with an electronic clutch to target the issue you mention. The PohlBock for example offer it. Second, the torque number ist right but the torque curves between E-Bike and traditional motor are totally different. An DC motor has most torque at 0 Rpm and go down then. Traditional Motor has it otherwise

I think I understand what you mean about the torque...but, if the torque was 260Nm, I don't think the bike would slow down on a steep hill, right?
      And it does.
Top speed goes down, acceleration goes down (significantly)... to me, that is a clear sign that those "260nM" are not real...if they are real, than they mean nothing, which is basiically the same :D
Am I wrong, though? I am totally new to this electric business

    • @os3705
      @os3705 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@OFFroadOFFcourse I will pick some sample diagrams which will make it more clear. Beside this they state very often the peak torque in Datasheets. This torque is real but exist for maybe 2 seconds until they must limit it to a third or quarter to keep the engine and controller alive. So those 260 might be 65 continous torque. At least continous torque is what count, peak might be nice in some situation but in general riding it is a useless number like dry wheight is 😏 No fake but useless, just marketing.

I love the idea of electric bikes but as you said, the range and charging time are rubbish at the moment. Also I'm 6'2" and every electric bike I've sat on is TINY! I tried the KTM and even with the quick swap battery you would need about 8 of them for a days hooning around and again it's small sized. To be fair to most bikes other than big adventure bikes most are small to me but that's another moan for another day. One of the big positives is the noise. Yes it's a high pitched whine but it's not a dirt bike or road bike with baffle removed which makes it much more friendly to be able to use some of the best off road places near housing etc.

They should put something that looks like a muffler with a speaker at the end and give the option of sounds mode ( sport bike, Enduro bike, v twin bike, etc..) and of course with a switch that controls the volume, and if the manufacturer wants to be a little creative they can make it sound like a train, just to keep rider safe🏍️

My biggest doubt is what to do when the battery life runs out, is about a third of the bike's value to have another one. However, the bike has already devalued... was it worth the investment?

    • @OFFroadOFFcourse
      @OFFroadOFFcourse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the question.
Im not sure if we are already there, but batteries are/will be a bit like combustion engines...they represent about 1/3 of the price of the vehicle, and they will last X years, depending on how you treat them.
Batteries dont need to be shit after 1 year or 2.. in theory, they could last much more than that and only loose a few % of storing capacity.
But i am talking out my ass, i have not idea what the real numbers are :)

About torque, where do they measure that on a combustion vehicle? Before or after the gearbox? I think it's before and if so, that's why you feel that the 260 Nm cannot be true. If you measure at the wheel, the BMW probably has more than 260 Nm in first gear.

I am afraid that would make the bike too umcofortable (very heavy rear wheel).... I'm not an expert, but I think that solution is more suitable to lighter vehicles that don't have a comfort expectation (like a small moped, a scooter, bycicle, etc).

Electrics are for those who haven't toys when they were little boys. They are not environmental friendly as advertised and they are not cheap for sure. The electric power is not also not so green. The only good thing is the electric motor (and that is debatable), but the advancement in batteries from 20 years ago are minimal to none, just look at AA accu and you will see (when I was in high school I wished a Walkman (yes I am old) and some 2500 mA AA accu (biggest at that time), now the biggest are 3000mA (more tan 20 years later), this is a joke).

    • @OFFroadOFFcourse
      @OFFroadOFFcourse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't agree entirely.
20 years ago you didn't have lithium batteries (Maybe NASA did but not the public...)
Lithium batteries allow electric vehicles (as we know them today) to be possible...they are not perfect yet for everyone, but they already solve solutions to a lot of people.
Like I say in this little video...if you only need something to go around town, you don't even need more range. 60-100km is enough.
The reason why batteries (the ones you used on your walkman) didnt evolve its because batteries like those are completely outdated. We use them for TV remotes and little more.
Everything nowadays has a lithium battery inside that you can charge 28392 cycles before it loses SOME of its capacity..its brilliant.
As for the ecological factor.... sure, lithium is toxic, manufacturing is not great, its not cheap, etc etc...but we are witnissing the birth of a new branch of technology. Let it do its thing.
Think about cellphones. They were useless, the size of a brick, cost thousands of dollar and were only bought my wallstreet business-man... nowadays they fit in your pocket, have 4k screens and can run high-end video games...for 200euros.
Internet? slow as f***, expensive, useless mostly..nowadays its as fundamental as tap water.
The car itself? A toy for rich people...everyone else used horses...
      etc etc.
The technology is NOT there yet... but I have been alive for long enough to know that its a matter of time =)

    • @OFFroadOFFcourse
      @OFFroadOFFcourse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I see what you mean... but I don't look at electric and think: "Its going to be crap range and lithium batteries forever"... I see a lot of potential that needs a bit of work.
we need a bit of faith that technology evolves.. Cause it always does!..it has happened 59923 times since I am alive.
Cell phones used to be heavy, expensive, and basically useless 20 years ago, and look where we are now.
Same for the internet, streaming tv, online shopping, gps, LEDs, cameras, drones, etc etc
Technology always begins as something "meh", kinda useless, very expensive, only the military and NASA uses it...and in a few years its good, reliable, cheap, and eventually indispensable :)
As for totalitarian dictatorships... the oil industry is not really a good alternative, is it? Its not exactly a beacon of hope and love for humanity xD
