  • In this video, I will show you different techniques for soft pastels, we will be doing layering, blending, scumbling, dusting and more!
    For this demo, I am using soft pastels and Canson Mi Teintes paper. In my collection I have different brands of soft pastels, such as Schmincke, Unison, Koh-i-Noor, Rembrandt, Daler Rowney, Winsor & Newton, but do not worry, you do not need to buy all of these, a cheap set by Koh-i-Noor is a great starting point, it's an amazing value for money and the pastels themselves are wonderful.
    As for the paper, I suggest you use Hahnemuhle Velour or Clairfontaine Pastelmat / UART / Sennelier Pastelcard / Canson Mi Teintes Touch instead of Ingres papers. They hold more layers but are more expensive in comparison. But for this little exercise, you can get away with using Ingres or Canson Mi Teintes.

    I would usually paint with watercolor, but my fiancé got me some soft pastels and I have no clue of how to use it. I find them quite messy and difficult to get details into your painting. I’m current in a tutorial binge and yours have been really helpful. Thank you so much

      For details in pastels you need " Pastels Pencil " which you can sharpen to detail your art. Enjoy it!

      i too had a prob with wanting to add fine detail. while pencils are good, its difficult to match colours, plus they wear out real quick. solution is, the transfer method. ie laydown a sheet of paper with a layer of the required colour pastel and with a nice sharp b pencil draw/transfer your details ontop of your blended pastels. so far it has worked a dream. amazin how the chalk responds to pressure allowing for more tones, gradations.
      btw really informative and helpfull video. thank you.

      Dear Kate,
      Your utube video 'Ways to erase pastel' totally saved my life this week! At a craft fair at the weekend a couple picked up the last card of my stock of a particular image asking to buy the original pastel! Total amazement! I'd painted it years ago and it was gathering dust in my studio! In between times I'd fiddled to improve it!! A bad idea!
      Anyway your video gave me the desperately needed knowledge to revive it, remove the rubbishy background and bring it back to the image the punters hadon heard!!
      I set to work, confidence seeped back andthe customers are happy! Actually we are sort of working together...they telling me which bits of the painting they want me to work on! Cooperation...perfect...win-win! Anne

    • @KatiaKotArt
      @KatiaKotArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you can use pastels on most papers, as long as it is not glossy as the pastels need tooth to be able to hold onto the paper. although, I suggest you use papers meant for pastels, such as canson miteintes, as they will accept more layers and allow better blending + they come in different colors (it's important not to use white paper when you are starting out)

    I’m drawing anime characters on Bristol Vellum paper, using a black colored pencil for the outlines. I want to use soft pastels to color them, but not sure if it’s the right medium. What do you think?

    • @KatiaKotArt
      @KatiaKotArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, it could be an interesting experiment. one thing to remember is that pastels don't layer well over colored pencils and you have to practice using the pastels before your hand knows the right movements to create the marks you'd like to make :)

  • @1DaTJo

    Dear Kate, why do you suggest that beginners avoid white paper? Is there a colour you recommend for us, please?

    • @KatiaKotArt
      @KatiaKotArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! :) the thing with white paper is that it darkens the colors too much. if you try to swatch a couple of light colors on any midtone paper and then compare it with the same colors on white you will see a huge difference and even very light colors might seem dull, dark and dirty on white paper. it's a good idea to get some experience with pastels first and then move on to white and black paper and experiment with it

      hello! I have tried kohinoor and winsor & newton. to tell the truth, I did not see any difference in the two, I think it really does not matter much, as long as it's an artists' grade fixative (not a hairspray) and is suitable for soft materials, such as charcoal and soft pastels. As I do not use fixative in my work (very rarely in the WIP stages), I cannot advise you more than this :)

      bonnie garson not many professional pastel artists use a fixative because it changes the colours and vibrancy.

    • @KatiaKotArt
      @KatiaKotArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      no, I sometimes use the fixative in between layers to prevent the previous layer from smudging but it does darken colors quite substantially and it is not a substitute when framing, you will still need to use glass to protect your work

    Can I use cartridge paper for soft pastel

    • @KatiaKotArt
      @KatiaKotArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any non-glossy paper works with pastels. But the disadvantage of cartridge paper is that it is white & compared to pastel paper has less tooth to it so you will not be able to layer as many layers of pastel. I sometimes use watercolor paper, the rough or the cold press one. It holds pastel but does need to be toned before I start any work. hope this is helpful :)

    I am confused if by soft pastel, you mean chalk pastel? I am never sure if this is oill or chalk.

      soft pastels are always the same as dry or chalk pastels. then there are oil pastels which are completely different medium. so every time you hear soft or hard pastels it's always the dry chalk ones 🙂
