The dark Bluish-gray color of the sandpaper can be overcome by painting the paper first with a diluted white gouache. The white background will make your pencil colours more vibrant. I use a cheap tiny spray mister bottle filled with gouache to cover the sandpaper and then go over it with a slightly damp 4" foam roller to even it out. Depending on your dilution you might need to go over it again. Let dry between coats. You can prepare several of these sheets ahead of time. Let it dry completely before drawing. I use a cheap brand of 600 grit wet/dry automotive sandpaper. I mount my sandpaper firstly on heavy cardstock with spray adhesive before covering with gouache. The texture of the sandpaper is still preserved for many layers of color pencil. Give it a try. You will like it.
Good idea and I'd probably need a lower grit because gouache would make it smoother.
