    The 7 tips
    1. Don't spend too much time obsessing over which prompt to use
    2. Don't worry too much about what "they" want
    3. Consider being vulnerable in your personal statement
    4. Engage the readers imagination using all 5 senses
    5. The ending of your essay should feel surprising, but inevitable
    6. The essence objects exercise
    7. The values exercise

    As a junior writing my common application drafts, i cannot emphasize this more: Write about something you’re passionate about!! You cannot imagine how many ideas I contemplated until I found a unique topic I love and then realized it became my favorite topic and draft because it included my passions in a subtle way.

    I’m a junior in high school right now, and in my English class, every week we have to a write a college essay, and the point of it is to progress over time and get better at it, so when it’s time to submit them, they’re ready. I’m from England and we have a “personal statement” and it’s basically 4000 characters of sucking up to the subject and talking about all the stuff you’ve done in your life that relate to the subject you’re applying for - and then maybe you’ll have a small paragraph at the end talking about ur hobbies. But your college essays sound like they’re genuine personal statements and it’s about you as a person :0

      Hey dears. From my experience, if you want to write effectively and fast, make sure that you eliminate all potential distractions. Make yourself comfortable and switch off your phone or put it in “do not disturb” mode. If you prefer working in silence, consider visiting the library. On the other hand, if you like background noise, turn on some fast music or try working in a cafe.
      But do you know what works even better? Getting a good essay writer to help you. I work with Mary, and I assure you, she is the best writer I’ve come across, and she’s super kind. (m a r y j o y k i m m y @ g m a i l . c o m) - without the spaces, of course.

    I am really passionate about my views on the death penalty which could fall under a few prompts for the common app essay, but I have read that speaking about politics isn’t such a good idea for a college essay. So I was wondering which would be a better topic: My really strong views on the death penalty or the reasoning behind I want to help people so much

    • @Collegeessayguy
      @Collegeessayguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The difficulty with topics that don't focus on you (like the death penalty) is that we may not learn as much about your own core values and how you'll contribute to your future college campus. Might there be another topic that will give readers better insight into you? Try outlining 2-3 different ideas, then share with a trusted teacher, friend, or family member and ask which idea might share more about you.

      Do you know a student who doesn't lack sleep? It's amazing how exhaustion is perceived as something normal when you're a student. You don't sleep for days because the exams are approaching and you have a huge essay marked with red on your schedule. That's normal; you're a student after all. Wait! No; it's not normal! If you're a student, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have a life, does it?

      @@YourNextCareer I disagree partially. Yes do enjoy your time in school, but since you're aware right now, it wouldn't hurt to chip away each day. A lot of people get their college essay "moments" during these years, so just make a note of it and it may later become your essay topic

      Journaling is a great way to practice writing. But I wouldn't recommend thinking about whether any given experience will make a great college essay. Live life and stay curious; your essay topic will come as you get to the end of your high school career.

    I am thinking about writing like a how to on how to overcome shyness so what i did to overcome shyness how I am now more confident and what I have done now since overcoming my shyness that I wouldn’t have done before because I was too shy and how it’s developed my character.Do you think this will be a good topic to write about or is it to cliche?

    • @Collegeessayguy

      It's a pretty common topic, so I recommend that if going with that topic to try and brainstorm some uncommon connections: www.collegeessayguy.com/blog/how-to-write-a-college-essay#D1
      However, I might recommend brainstorming a few other ideas: what's the college essay that only you could write?

    Would a good college essay be writing about how the game of football has had such a powerful effect on me since I was 6 and my dreams and aspirations for football, and how even though I’ve grown up in a suburban household, my family life wasn’t the best. Like how my older sister has been verbally and physically abusive to my parents since I was little and how her abuse forced me to mature faster to make sure I could protect my mom and younger siblings from her? Also how the reason I want to become successful in football is because I want to give my parents and siblings a great life?

    • @Collegeessayguy
      @Collegeessayguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That topic could work! A good question to ask yourself is: "Does this topic demonstrate the skills, qualities, values, and interests I offer the school as an incoming student?"
      If yes, then start outlining and writing your first drafts. If no, go back to brainstorming!

    So the college that I really want to go to doesn't require an essay, but highly recommend one if you have a low GPA. My GPA isn't the best so the lady said to either write about why I want to go to that college or really anything, and they just want to see how I write. I don't really have much about why I want to go to that college that would be essay worthy and if I wanted to write about why I want to chose the majors I did, I don't think I could write about that in detail either. I would love to do a personal essay, but I really don't know where to begin or how to format it. What would you recommend?

      I like the idea of a diary. Also, make sure you do some low stakes brainstorming - figure out character traits or lessons you have learned that could be the focus / essence of the essay...what do people say about, adjectives to describe who you are to others...you can think conventions and structure after you nail down the topic and message but you can write it as if it's someone else writing about you, a diary entry sounds fun too. a lot of options. good luck

    Hiya! Im a junior in highschool, boutta be a senior next year but I have a question, is it ok for me to talk about myself being not confident with my body and looks? Because all throughout my 17 years of living I've had doubts bout myself and over think about things that are very simple to everyone else. Growing up I have always felt like I wasn't good enough for anyone or that people I walk by silently judges me for the way how I look. But I learned to love myself slowly but surely but I couldn't have done that if I didn't remember the encouraging words my grandma would say to me when I felt down or the uplifting speeches my God mom would say to me when I would confess the things that have been on my mind for ages (which were all depressing thoughts, not eating for days on end and even some fat shaming) those two people who I care for very much has been my motivation to not care what others think and just be ME! They inspired me that if I don't like the way how I look then change it up a bit. meaning work on sculpting my body the way I can feel comfortable enough in, eat right and workout stuff like that. It woukd be great if I could write on that honestly, with my journey towards self lovin.
