Portrait of a Bear: Speed Painting

Now working on my next book about the many bears who passed our garden during a season of forest fires, and how we saved them from the local residents whose efforts to kill them were vicious. (It happened in Canada, a nation of hunters and trappers.) This is the first of the illustrations--the fourth bear we identified passing by. The book illustrations will be printed in black and white, which is fine because they are black bears.
I sped it up more than usual because of the number of strokes required to render her thick fur, using both large brushes for the first pass, then finer strokes to show the true texture as I go on.

Marvellous to watch the bear come alive! You do make it look effortless, as tho I could pick up a brush and do the same in a few minutes!
