      Thanks! Hmmm. To gimbal or not to gimbal, that is the question. As I mentioned, this rig, or at least the "lightweight" version works well hand-held -- it gives a natural look. Will I go all out for a "proper" stabilizer? You'll have to stick around to find out. But not likely in the short term.

      @@RaymondParkerPhoto Not to make it a diatribe, but as an oldster, I'm fond of tripods, esp. for HD . As the res. goes up, the effects of vibration, shake etc, do as well. So for repeatable follow shots,hand-held dolly/crane, good stab. matters. At my age, 1,900 grams of rig, isn't a safe bet for steadiness for more than a minute at a time.

    The solutions I found that work: use a usb-c to usb-c cable and a vmount with usb-c (fxlion). Also, a smaller v mount plate from smallrig (no 3168) with an np-f type battery works, also with usb-c to usb-c cable. I attached that small plate to the backside of my vmount plate, if I run out I only have to turn it around and insert a np-f battery and I’m good to go.

    Great video! Wondering if you’ve had external monitor low contrast / odd color issues over HDMI in NLog with the Z9. We’re finding issues with atamos, small Hd, and osee monitors. Oddly enough only with NLog and HGL - not in SDR.

      Not that I know of. To be honest, I haven't used the Ninja V (I don't own the V+) with the Z9 that often. And I most often use SDR since it's so good and record that in-camera. I'll have to look into this.

    Hey Raymond, always happy to see another video from you. I actually sent my Z9 back and ended up purchasing a Z6 II for video and a Z7 II for images. I did this because they are so much smaller and lighter than the Z9, even though it is technically superior. I am really happy with my choice and I am wondering how you feel about the size and weight of the much larger Z9 for your video work?

    • @RaymondParkerPhoto
      @RaymondParkerPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your decision; indeed the Z9 is much heavier and if I didn't use the camera most of the time on a tripod I might also have second thoughts. The Z9's in-camera video options are so good though, as I note in this video, eliminating the need in most cases for an external recorder. So that's a big weight and bulk saving for run-and-gun.
      The Z6 though, as you know and I hope my video showcases, is a very capable video camera, even the 8-bit in many cases.

    • @PictorialWhispers
      @PictorialWhispers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RaymondParkerPhoto Hi Raymond, your internal 8-bit indoor videos are absolutely stunning and professional broadcast quality. It was a tough decision to send the Z9 back, but in my particular case, having two cameras, one dedicated to video (Z6II + Atomos Ninja V) and the Z7II for photos is an ideal scenario for me. I chase wild horses in very challenging landscapes and create photos and videos of them. I actually find the external monitor/recorder to be very helpful for me when recording in 10-bit N-LOG. I have a SmallRig hood/shade for the monitor to help me see when I am in difficult lighting outdoors in the woods and it really helps along with all the other features that you know about that are not part of the Nikon Z series, to include the Z9. And, I agree with you, if I were filming indoors primarily and didn't have to haul the Z9 and rig outdoors to film wild horses, I would absolutely choose that camera. It has amazing technology and maybe in the future, there may be a Z8 or something similar that is the same size as the Z6 and 7, but has many of the features as the Z9. Really enjoying your videos and please keep going.

    • @RaymondParkerPhoto
      @RaymondParkerPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see how the Z6 + Ninja is perfect for your use case.
      I hope that Nikon adds exposure tools to the Z9. I have forwarded the suggestion and hopefully a firmware update can do that.
      My latest short video (larch bonsai) is shot with the Z9, internal 8K 10bit, edited on 4K timeline. I did next to no post, just opened it up a touch and, of course, the freedom to crop is like having a couple of extra cameras on set. The quality is extraordinary, I think you'll agree. Makes me look like I know what I'm doing.😀

    • @PictorialWhispers
      @PictorialWhispers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RaymondParkerPhoto All great points and there is no denying the quality of the Z9 files. The 8K files are off the charts huge as I am sure you know and that is where the Ninja or something similar with SSD drives could help at least on the record side. The exposure tools as you know on the Ninja or similar really are an important part of my field work. I would really miss that if I had stuck with the Z9. I just ordered two new 36 TB G-Raid drives to deal with my Z6II 4K ProRes footage and I can't imagine the storage requirements for 8k... As always great stuff from you and I am always happy to see when you post something new.

Looking at your new Z9 buried under that new rig doesn’t hurt so much since nearly unrecognizable, for those still waiting for the Z9. Now your rig is nearly set l look forward to seeing some small project to see the Z9 performance. How’s the learning curve jump been from Z6 to the Z 9. Have you shot any 8k down sized to 4k. Im looking at a z9 for video, what is the cost of the setup not including the camera?

      Depends on the components. Suggest following links in description to get an idea.

    I’m looking into the FXLION Nano 1 or Nano 2 to power Z9 on rig

      Me too. Just need to make sure I get the right cable. Do you know if you can just plug in with same PD cable I'm using here?

      @@RaymondParkerPhoto I think you’ll be fine since it’s a PD cable. I’ve charged my camera with several usb c cables like thunderbolt cable for Mac.

      @@rodneyturnerphoto Thanks, Rodney. Electrical power is an area I have 0 experience with and am always shy about plugging things -- very expensive things in this case -- into any power source. As I say in the video, I've been trying to get some advice to no avail.

    Pretty cool setup but I think at that price point (and that massive mile long list of parts needed) I would just get a Blackmagic Ursa Mini 12k and call it a day. For dual use cases I can see the logic behind this Z9 rig but I still find having to reconfigure the camera for different use cases every time you want to switch is a pain in the ass. Sometimes you just want to grab and go but then you remember you still have the camera set up for video or vice versa.

      Well, sure the Ursa Mini 12K packs quite a punch (as does its 4.6K G2 sister), but, at least here in Canada, it's $1400 more expensive than the Z9. It would still require peripherals in use, so also not without extra costs, particularly where movements are concerned. It weighs about 5+lbs naked, right?
      There's lenses to consider, despite the flexibility of the mount (damn, I sold most of my F-mounts to finance the Z9!😀)
      (Edit: and you're not going to be using cheap lenses if you plan to shoot 12K and have you considered data rates for 12K? Budget for some *massive* storage costs).
      Internal NDs are very attractive, as are a host of other pro features here, but again it is specialized in its use. If money were no object, or I was making my Hollywood blockbuster, I'd buy one for sure. But even the Z9 is, admittedly, overkill for TH-cam..

      how do you deal with follow focus on Z mount focus by wire lenses?

    Would have prefered to watch slow moving b-roll of your rig while listening to you narrate. Visual reinforcing what you're saying vice you in a chair talking.
