1st frost is so beautiful. Don’t mourn it, celebrate the frost. Time to put Mother Earth to bed. Nature has, so should we.🎉

Yes, the animals always get their winter coat by the time it's needed. And I cackled outloud thinking to myself....I'm sure glad we as humans don't get super hairy before a frost hahahaha

It's amazing to me that you got a frost in the south before I got one in Pennsylvania! Granted, I do live in a lovely little microclimate at the top of a hollow in a mountain, so many people around me got a frost but we stay a couple of degrees warmer and it's enough to extend my season at each end by approximately 2 weeks. Yay!
Here's hoping you can salvage a bunch of basil.

"They don't need the forecast to tell them what to do." I love love love this! I grew up learning about how to watch nature, animals and so on to know what would/could happen with the weather and I'll be darn if those little shifts aren't right 99% of the time! This year I noticed in my own garden that baby pine cones were falling about a month early and sure enough a lot of gardeners and homesteaders seem to be having an early frost or fall.

I bought a temperature/humidity monitor with 3 remote sensors so I can track my own temperatures for this reason. Unfortunately, sometimes the weather forecast is off enough to kill plants. I don't have big enough yard for a full weather station but this moniitoring system works for my garden. In fact I have been changing the batteries in everything today so I'm ready for freeze season.

😂 Please rewatch this video when it’s February and you’re in full blown locked and loaded kidding season! 😂 Prepare yourself now to not be overwhelmed. By me people breed the smaller goats as pets to keep in the yard for property control, leaf eaters, horse companions and brush hogs. My last one is 10 years old living with my flock plus 15 year old pet pig. Everyone’s asking me to buy a few new goats, but I think after 20 years we are done caring for larger ban animals in the winter months. It was fun and if you do breed smaller they should totally be sold for pets! They’re adorable!!!😊

Similar happened to me in Ohio. I had been watching the forecast it was getting right around 40 at night, so I thought I had a little time, too. The night before last, I got an alert from my weather app for a frost warning at 9:30 pm! I still had frost tender stuff out there that I wanted! So, in the dark with the flashlight from my phone, I was harvesting just a few of the most important things I wanted to keep and not risk, knowing I had to give up on the rest. It made me chuckle, honestly.

❤ It’s been so dry here in NJ that I’ve had to water almost daily, but I know some plants are at the end of their season. The one thing I am excited about as it gets cooler is that the dew seems to be watering spinach seeds enough that the ones that didn’t germinate are now popping up. 😊 I pulled dandelion roots and leaves yesterday for the dehydrator and the house smelled so sweet! Ah a nice cup of dandelion tea is a pleasure for my arthritis!

Our frost date is October 15th and it was right on the button. But so far so good. My garden is on an upper slope towards the southwest. I did cover my late planting of green beans in the hope of getting a nice picking from them. It's frosty at night and fairly warm during the day. So I re-cover the hoops in late afternoon while the sun is still shining on the bed of beans.

Living in Florida for over 20 years, when we lived in Central Florida, the fern farms during cold snaps would put water on the plants and let them freeze to protect them. Now we're not talking food greens and maybe ferns are a different leaf structure but it's what saved the plants. Millions of ferns for florists.

I was also blindsided. I am up here in Ontario Canada, above the north east side of New York State, and we totally got that frost too. BAM! Normally we do get frost this time of year but a few little brushes of frost to warn us first. That was hard core -3C frost, right out of the gate. I was lucky enough to think of a final harvesting of things, a few days before just in case, so I don't have loads of stuff left out there. There's only an Italian vine bean, the really large white type, that I am not sure what I will get from those. My first time growing them too. I feel for you Jess.

I've done a lot of my cleanup pulling all unripe tomatoes to put on my grow shelves in the 60 ° greenhouse to ripen. Have all my Dahlias relabeled with new labels for storage after 1st frost. Our first frost is in Nov but I check each day for any updates if there's any change. Raking up maple leaves to shred and layer each bed with them. Still have more that will be falling in the next few days.

Here in Alabama zone 8b we had frost forecast the past 2 nights. There has been enough wind that frost did not form in our garden. We usually get a light frost in.mid-October then it warms up for 2 to 3 more weeks. I cover for the first frost but not beyond that. Let Nature take her course.

Yikes! You never freeze before me! I’m in SW Canada (Southern BC) - estimated frost day Oct 31 - Im staring down Wednesday night next week willing it to rise from its 1C overnight projection… looks like it’s going to be an early year but wow I never expect yours to go before mine!

It's crazy that you got a freeze in SC but here in CT we didn't. I watched this video and the last one as I'm sitting in my kitchen prepping my green tomatoes. I pulled most everything Monday because we had a forecast of 34 and I wanted to be safe. I hope that your high tunnel was safe in the end!

Interesting. On Thursday I woke up to +17. In Norway. It has never been so warm in the middle of October. I'm still waiting to plant garlic.

It’s so hard to let go! I’m still getting up early and spraying some of mine with water.

The first frost. Weather is unpredictable. Best to have half in and half out of the high tunnel.

Our first heavy frost was last night here in Southern KY. Right on our "average first frost" date. Usually we have another week though. My house and garden are on a little hill so garden isnt mush yet but the neighbors were so white it looked like snow. Beautiful and sad for me.

We did not have a frost yet way up here in NE Massachusetts. I was considering moving South to get a longer season.

Good Morning Jess! I plucked the last of my green tomatoes last night skipping over the herbs, and last cucumber plant and awoke this morning to the my first frost as well. Your frost appears to be a little harder than my Maryland frost.. the garden will now begin her hibernation.

We had something similar here in East Texas. It was supposed to be in the 40s and many areas went to freezing. Caught everyone off guard. And next week is supposed to be 90s again 🤦🏻‍♀️

I feel your pain on the frost. We got a temperature sensor just to get a more accurate temp reading. We have also learned its usually 5 to 10 degrees lower than forecasted. Last nights forecast was mid 30s I woke at 4 am to 11 degrees. We live in central Oregon in zone 6a.
