I have two favorite parts of this vlog. One is the photographs of your parents, your aunt and uncle which we know, another aunt, and another uncle which I do not know. And the second is a look at Toulouse, which brought back memories of a visit there over a weekend. It was during my three-month post-university "grand tour" of Western Europe in 1972. At Easter, I found myself in the Piazza San Marco of Venice. Uncharacteristically, a Frenchman began speaking to me out of the blue in rapid-fire French. He mistook the looks of my Italian heritage for French, and this turned into a conversation. He had a fairly good knowledge of English, and I employed my spotty high school French. We hit it off and toured around Venice together for a few days, which resulted in him inviting me to spend a weekend in Toulouse. So, after traveling through Italy, and stopping in Nice, I made my way to Barcelona. Spain was still controlled by Franco at the time, and the railroad tracks had a different gauge. This required passengers to physically leave the train at the border and by design, be subjected to a rigorous luggage inspection before boarding the Spanish one. It was the reverse switch in trains to exit Spanish territory. But this took place in the Pyrenees, and though beautiful, it was extremely cold. I had pre-arranged by telephone to meet the Frenchman, Claude, at Toulouse-Matabiau Station on a Friday evening. Upon meeting, he discretely asked me not to speak English because there was "une manifestation" against the US in progress just outside the station. Toulouse was the epicenter of the jointly developed Anglo-French supersonic airliner, Concorde. And it had just been banned by law in the states because of citizen protests regarding noise pollution concerns. We could hear the word "Concorde" chanted over and over as we made our way into the Toulouse Metro. Claude put me up in his apartment for three nights. He nipped off to "une boulangerie" the next morning. When he returned, it was my first taste of a warm croissant with "café au lait." Later we went to meet up with some of Claude's friends at "Le Drugstore." It was the French take on a classic American-style drugstore, complete with soda fountain and lunch counter. These were starting to decline in the US, but they were all the rage in France at the time. For dinner we went to an old wine cellar, a "cave," for flank steak cooked in a whole-grain mustard sauce, which was wonderful. The next day, Claude and I met up once again with his friends and I was treated to a ride in a Citroën out into the countryside. It was a damp, overcast day and the destination was an old farmhouse owned by the family of one of Claude's friends. Though charming, it turned out to be quite cold, so a fire was started. They began playing records of American show tunes and were disappointed that I was not a fan. It went from bad to worse when they switched to Berlioz operas. I said very little, but suspected they found me devoid of culture. The group was encouraged by my approval of Edith Piaf, but it went downhill again when I confessed my real love was rock and roll. Sitting next to the fireplace did little to warm me, so one of them wrapped me in a blanket. Then they broke out the Armagnac. It may have been just as cold, but I was feeling no pain. I said my goodbyes and thanks to Claude early the next morning and took the train to Paris. It had been an interesting weekend and a rare opportunity to see slices of life in France most tourists never get to see. Claude managed to visit the US a few years later and we met again, but as often happens, we lost touch. When I visited France in 1995, I tried to find him but was unsuccessful. Get Marie a pair of woven metal gloves. The do sell them. I cut off a tiny bit of one of my fingers using that thing while making a dinner for family and friends. After I returned from the hospital All were waiting for me to finish dinner as they were clueless as to how to do it. We did eat, a bit late as you can imagine 🤣

Your aunt and uncle were quite stunning when young and now they are so hardworking, generous and give out a lovely energy. Stephanie your clothes collection must rival Phillip’s plates, cutlery etc!! I do like it when you include history and stories in your vlogs so it is not all about acquiring - beautiful as they may be and the little darling (Galahad) is the cutest sight in his yellow outfit. My British Shorthair had a similar one in red and would turn heads when I walked her on a harness and leash.

Yes u r so correct! would b best if the steel glove came in the box with the mandoline. U do not need a costly steel glove u just have 2 b sure 2 use the glove every single time! Worst cut and difficult 2 heal some need stitches. Glove should come in the box really.

Your aunt and uncle were quite stunning when young and now they are so hardworking, generous and give out a lovely energy. Stephanie your clothes collection must rival Phillip’s plates, cutlery etc!! I do like it when you include history and stories in your vlogs so it is not all about acquiring - beautiful as they may be and the little darling (Galahad) is the cutest sight in his yellow outfit. My British Shorthair had a similar one in red and would turn heads when I walked her on a harness and leash.
Loved that visit to Toulouse. I have many fond memories of living there. That photo with your family is absolutely wonderful. And, thanks for showing the ice cream spoons. I have two sets in my pattern that came to me as ice cream spoons, ones like yours, and ones like regular spoons, but they're engraved in the bowls. So, I have to wonder! Another wonderful video!

Yes u r so correct! would b best if the steel glove came in the box with the mandoline. U do not need a costly steel glove u just have 2 b sure 2 use the glove every single time! Worst cut and difficult 2 heal some need stitches. Glove should come in the box really.

In the UK in the late 70s it was called a "Purdey cut" (created by John Frieda) after Joanna Lumley's character in the New Avengers (UK 1970s TV show not the recent movie franchise) Looks like the style happened both sides of the Atlantic at around the same time but Yusuke Suga took credit for the American version as worn by Dorothy Hamill
