Hi, I'm Greg Shapiro. Comedian. American. Dutchman. I came to Amsterdam to work with Boom Chicago comedy theater, and I never left. Along the way, I've hosted 'Comedy Central News,' I've written a book 'How to Be Orange,' and I've worked side by side with Boom Chicago alumni such as Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele and Jason Sudeikis.
A lot of my TH-cam activity has been with Boom Chicago: in 2004 I voiced the 'Florida Voting Machine' video, which gained 1 million views - before there was a TH-cam. I'm now working on a 'Daily Show for the EU' called 'United States of Europe.' I'm co-host of 'The Amsterdam Comedy Podcast.' And I'm host of the app Quickest Quiz. They're all free. Please subscribe! It really helps.

Holy shit, why does everyone feel so offended? I watched parts 1 to 3, fucking loved it, and I was born and raised, and still live in the Netherlands. I think you're really spot on. I guess the wrong people have been watching your vids lol. Most Dutchies I know would love this, too. Great job!

In reference to the bitterballen debacle; it's always a good idea to try a small piece of an unknown food first instead of just jamming it straight in to your mouth and attempt to ask questions later.

Peanut butter with hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) 😀😀
    Peanut butter with jelly 🤢🤢
And if you want to have something to eat at work, you grab ONE of the coffee biscuits next to the machine.
Or, you bring your own lunch!
Another option is that you'll go to the nearest kebab shop.
Something a lot of dutch refer to as "de Turk."

Lunch is part of work and is spent with colleagues which you did not pick yourself. Time with them should be as short as possible. As such you can go home early to see family and friends and enjoy life.
Actually, a French coworker, complaining about our simple lunches, realised that he spent time with colleagues which he could better have spent playing soccer with his kids.

Actually, peanutbutter-jelly is fine. To the person eating it, that is. It's like eating (Dutch) fries in the train. Only the person doing the eating is having any enjoyment. Fact: someone who has eaten peanutbutter will have bad breath. Not as bad as poo-breath but bad enough. The odour/stench of fried fries in the train will have many have second thoughts about remaining near the eater. However, since most Dutch are 'too polite' or find it 'rude' to openly show such hostile behaviour, most Dutch will remain seated and act as if the smell doesn't bother them. Personally, I leave immediately and go sit in the next carriage because I do not find enjoyment in self-torture (choosing to remain seated in the same carriage).

Boterham met leverworst en (appel-peren)stroop. Ja ik besef hoe ranzig het klinkt, dat dacht ik oorspronkelijk ook toen het me werd aangeboden, maar verrassend goede combinatie.
Sandwhich with liverwurst and (apple-pear)syrup. Yes I understand how aweful that sounds, I originally thought the same when it was offered to me, but it's a surprisingly good combination.

We always had fun at work when we compared our lunches (sliced bread, 'plastic' cheese, cheap meat, water/tea/coffee) to the lunches of the bosses (horse d'oeuvres, real orange juice, fruit and luxe sandwiches with warm filling). But still.. nothing compared to the lunches we had at the European institutions (warm meals, lots of different drinks, desert, side dishes, fresh salad).
Do you think is it Calvinistic or more of a frugal thing though?

Bitterballs are called that, because they were a traditional accompaniment to genever, and a glass of genever is called a 'Bittertje" in Dutch. Peanut butter and jelly? My Japanese wife loves it, I, Dutchman, find it inedible!

    • @ferryvanderwal
      @ferryvanderwal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

rolandet The name 'bitter' actually means '(a) bite'. Their both from an old Germanic word but evolved in two different words basically meaning the same thing. It's because their so small that you can eat them in one bite. We also have 'bitterkoekjes' which are a kind of cookie, also small enough to eat in one bite. It also means bitter like the English word bitter, although the bitterballen and bitterkoekjes aren't bitter. The meaning for '(a) bite' only gets used in those two foods, because they're so old and the names just stick around.

well. lil onesided. it realy depends where you go.
there like a dozen difrent specific cultures that all had there go with the language,
someone from the south wouldnt be able to understand someone from the north in there dialecs. yet they seem tobe abe to find always some common ground.
greg only covered the west part.
never mind that all those area's have so there own food.
exsample balkenbrij is something only eaten in the north-east parts
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenbrij
most of NL finds this discusting. while its a rather nice snack compared what mcdonnals puts in there bugers
this type of multi cultures is all over the place. but only in NL other country's seem to have getto's and mayor conflict when it comes to difrent cultures.
bitterballen, well its just proven that deepfried fat allows you to drink even more at the weekend. (its actualy not fat but boiled out bits of meat, eyes, tails etc fat content is rather low.)
about Nl being flat.. saves on fuel costs right?
