  • Dutch Bag Flags Explained | United States of Europe.
Unlike America, Dutch homes rarely hang up the national flag on their homes... Except for certain occasions like high school graduation. But only if you hang up your school bag as well. Why is it only then okay to be patriotic? I asked some Dutch people.

You gotta step off the 'patriotic' thing. It's not about patriotism, hanging up your schoolbag means exactly zero for patriotism in the Netherlands. It's about announcing to the world, look, I graduated, yay me. And everyone driving or walking by can see that in that house, someone's having a good week.
In the USA, the flag is all about patriotism, it's basically holy. Here, not so much, it's symbolic more than patriotic. Yes we are proud of the flag, yes we are proud to be Dutch, but with the graduation flag, hanging up a small flag or a big one, a flagpole or a window improv, forget the patriotism that you are obsessed with over there. There's a flag and a schoolbag, that's all that matters.
For other occasions, we hang the flag for what the flag stands for, but in this 'flag event', the flag isn't what's important, the schoolbag is.

We do nothing except having dinner with our classmates in a restaurant and share funny moments. I'm shocked by this tradition. I'll take it into account as I'll be graduated in September. I'm not proud of all things that Spaniards did in the past. Things changed. Nowadays, there's a little "invasion" of the Dutch in the province of Alicante. the flag will also be hanged on other occasions. For example on kingsday, commemoration day of the dead (on 4th of may) but then the flag will be hanged 'half-stok' so it won't be hanged at the top because we're not celebrating anything. Also, when an important person died, the flag will be hanged 'half-stok'. So for example when someone from your family died or an important person in your neighborhood, the flags in the neighborhood will be hanged 'half-stok' or when a Dutch person you looked up to died. Also on the 5th of may, liberation day of WW 2, the flag will be hanged to celebrate the liberation.
Not all Dutch people will hang their flags on these occasions and sometimes people just forget to hang the flag, we are pretty loose about the topic. The most common day to hang your flag is when you graduated and on kingsday.

As far as I know it is illegal to hang the Dutch flag for an event like graduation. You can hang the flag because of national celebrations but not because you graduated. No one will ever get complaints about hanging the Dutch flag but it’s still against the law. At our school we get a flag with the school name and colors that says ‘graduated’ on it. I hung out that flag and also the Canadian flag because I’m Canadian.

    • @gregshapiro

I've heard about rules against hanging the Dutch flag - BUT only for public buildings. re: School distributing its own flag: that's a good idea.

      @lindaraterink6451 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You can hang the dutch flag out every day for any kind occasion you wish. It can't touch the floor or obstruct trafic. It has to be of the pole or inside between darkness and sunrise or you light the flag so that the collors are seen as per custom, so not obligated but kind of disrespectful. The wimpel (orange banner you see sometimes on top of the red white and blue) is only for certain royals. Government buildings and public buildings have different rulles they need to follow.

There are quite a few moments when the flag is hung from government buildings:
The birthday of princess Beatrix (the former queen),
      King's day,
Remembrance Day (the flag is hung half mast to remember and honour those that died in the second world war),
      Liberation day,
      The queen's birthday,
Veteran's day (the last Saturday of june),
15th of August, to celebrate the end of the second world war,
Prince's day (only in The Hague),
The birthday of the crown princess,
      Kingdom day,
Royal births, mariages and deaths (half mast for the deaths),
Visits from foreign heads of state (only in the place being visited).
For the royal birthdays the flag is accompanied by an orange pennant.
People can hang the flag whenever they want, they are only asked to make sure it doesn't touch the ground or hinders traffic and to not keep it hanging out between sundown and sunset, or if they do, make sure it's properly lit.

We also hang up the flag for certain holidays, but in general, we see hanging out the flag all the time as overly nationalistic and in bad taste.
Unless it's the soccer European or World cup and then some people go crazy with decorations, including lots of small flags.
This usually happens more in poorer areas with social housing. When you're rich, or an intellectual, you don't watch soccer much and you play golf, read a book, or watch a documentary on the other channel. I'm a poor intellectual myself, so any comment with respect to what I'm supposed to do would be highly appreciated.
