    Back in the late 70s when F1 banned ground effects, they caused this problem and it's taken almost 40 years for F1 to come to their senses and go back to ground effects. The big problem will be on street circuits with the manhole cover pooping up when the welds fail and hopefully the manhole won't take a driver or drivers out of the race.

      1981 and 1983 that they ban ground effects.
      And... We need to keep in mind the entire composition and gestalt of the car.
      These F1 turbo ground effects of the 1980s had porposing. This is the behavior that usually used to describe boats, and I am not kidding: the car was raking up and down, and the suspension springs can be uncompressed and overcompressed in a few seconds. That effect was particularly violent.
      Mario Andretti infamously left F1 in parts because of that behavior.

    What frustrates me about these videos is that you show these great visuals of airflow heatmaps from simulations and such, but don't explain them at all, or use them to visualize your points. They just flash by, like the text has been written without visuals in mind and they are just added in later. Good explainer videos use the format to its strength, by making the narration and visuals work together.
    You say you want to outgrow Chain Bear (at least I assume you are referring to him), and you have advantages like actual racing experience, but there's still quite a gap in the quality and use of the format. I hope you can improve on this front!

    Given how F1 aero has looked for the last 20 years with flat edges and sharp creases, I can't see any designer actually making a car that looks like the Liberty 2022 concept. The current Ferrari being a prime example - they could made the nose more curvy if they wanted to, like Mercedes, but they clearly don't want to. It's not like the designers will forget they like outwash either. They will still all focus on maximum performance in clear air, not compromising, because the tyres are still going to be shit in '22.

    • @timothystamm3200
      @timothystamm3200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But they also have ground effect. They wanted all of that because they needed over body down force. If they're allowed to manipulate air into the venturi tunnels you might see quite the opposite philosophy of wanting to suck as much air to the floor as possible because ground effect is more efficient. Afterall, there are still turns that the old skirt ground effect cars can take faster than the modern cars. Also the intention of the rules are to eliminate dirty outwash, therefore if someone manages to do it anyway, then whatever parts they used to do it will be banned once they're caught. Assuming they'd be stupid enough to ignore ground effect and try that though.

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothystamm3200 Isn't the principle of outwash to minimise the impact on the front tyres, help seal the floor, and tidy up the air over the surfaces? Won't all of those things still apply? Won't there still be a benefit in tidying up the air before it reaches the front wheels and how it impacts the other surfaces all the way to the rear wing? Sure, they can decide to ban anything they don't like, but my point wasn't that they can't ban things. My point was the the cars won't look like what Liberty is pretending they will look like. It will also take them a while to analyse what each team is doing and how, before they can know what to ban.
      The AM Valkyrie has huge venturi tunnels. It still has lots of creases and flat surfaces, because that's the direction that aero has gone in, hence I am highly skeptical of the the Liberty 2022 design.

    • @timothystamm3200
      @timothystamm3200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Ruylopez778 there shouldn't be as much tire squirt because they are covering the wheels, that and one of the uses for the vortexes they were generating was to send along the sides of the floor to act like a physical skirt, now they have actual skirts. Lastly, it depends on how specific they were about the form of the car. If those curves were mandated and described in the rules and not just an example of what can be done in the rules then you will see them. Also, the thing I think you're more likely to see is the teams trying to get around how the nose curves down because they'd want as much air going under the wing and nose as possible. Finally, if the ground effect is giving them enough down force I don't know why they wouldn't want to smooth out the rest of the car to reduce drag.

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothystamm3200 I don't think the nose will look like Liberty is implying.
      I think there will be more sharp edges and straight lines than the Liberty design all over the car.
      It's not about venturi or no venturi, it's about basic aero design on modern cars.
      I'm not saying they won't do things differently with the new regulations - they might well do that. But I suspect they will still find ways to move the air how they want to. If they can find ways to make an extra 5% downforce on the front and 5% on the back, without creating more drag, they will do it. Having the 'ground effect' doesn't mean that they don't want to optimise other areas that give them two tenths of a second per lap in extra downforce.
      Look at how the FIA changed the front design regulations before, and teams started making hollow channels in the end plates to control the air. Or how they started playing with the wing mirrors as aero devices.
      I'm sure the teams have ways to work the wheel deflectors in a way the FIA haven't thought of.
      McLaren also came up with a diffuser idea for this season that was a work around on the regulations.
      I hope the cars are more in the current style (without the aero, or length they have now, of course) than the 2022 concept.
      It looks like a concept car that will never be made - Toyota Supra springs to mind.

    • @timothystamm3200
      @timothystamm3200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ruylopez778 Alright maybe I wasn't being clear, there is a point where the grip of the car allows for more g force in turns than what the driver's body can handle. We already know we can do that with a fan car without much in the way of overbody aero, and underfloor ground effect isn't that far off. If they get anywhere close to numbers like that then there is no reason to not smooth out the rest of the car to improve straight line speed. Yes they might be able to get more out of the rules if the rules were sloppy but that doesn't mean they should. If the underbody aero is good enough then safety considerations will be what makes going insane with the rules unnecessary.
      Just because there is a current preference in overbody aero that doesn't mean that that preference will remain when underbody aero is opened up. Especially, if they get close to what old underbody aero was capable of, because then it would be dangerous to go any further. There is a point where they can make a faster car around a circuit but they can't make a driver who would survive that lap.

    As a biker, it’s very clear that vehicles with squared upper edges create much more turbulence. Even a small upper radius makes a difference. I applaud saying good-bye to the turbulence force field.

    People are saying it looks wierd, but with all those random edges and small wing elements on the current ones I think it looks a lot more normal than the current front wings. And also just better.

    If the front wing doesn't do much, it will be interesting to see what teams do when it's damaged due to a crash or what not. Maybe stay out and get track position instead of an immediate pit.

    Maybe this is a stupid question but if teams can make front wings from 4 elements what will prevent them to use 2 element for downforce and the other two to direct airflow and generate dirty air for the car behind?
    These are not spec cars, they will go crazy tricky with the front wing designs. I assume none of them will look like the one on the 2022 showroom car.

  • @jussayinmipeece1069

    correct me if i am wrong but who says that because the strakes are connected they must be that shape? I am sure they can have uneven trailing edges and middle ones can be different shapes to create vortices between the slats. Also unless the attachment points are mandated to be a certain width they can be made minimally small as long as they are "attached" so that the minimally attached section can be either at the nose or at the winglettes.
    And who says they MUST be wing shaped and MUST generate downforce? They can be repurposed to do other things like turn the air around the side pods since they will be relying on them less for downforce since most of the front wing surface at the moment is NOT generating downforce anyway.
    Or at least that's what i would do.

    Have they ever tested older f1 cars (1950-1969) in modern windtunnels to examine whether close racing was easier then? Would be nice to check...
    Second question, do the top teams test their designs in windtunnel while a rival car is in front of their car to examine the behavior in dirty air?

    Excellent, informative clip. Here is another change I would like to see, totally unrelated to aerodynamics: Getting rid of the tyre blankets, and forcing teams to place tyres on, at ambient temperature, without any artifices which would be, first, environmentally responsible since I believe, collectively, the 10 teams must run a massive kilowatt-hour bill heating tyres over an entire season (has anyone done a study on this?), this way drivers would be forced to warm up tyres "naturally", and, I believe this would add up a few notches on the excitement level during a race. Of course, the FIA would have to make sure there is no cheating going on, but I suppose, of all things, this would be easy to manage.

    I wonder if at tracks like Monza cars will experiment with no front wing if they really don't generate much downforce

  • @BluesAlmighty
    @BluesAlmighty 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The picture with the dirty air going up is quite unrealistic. It would imply it leaves a vacuum behind. The sheer volume of the moving car will leave a wake of turbulence. I.e. there is no way to eliminate turbulence behind the car. "Less dirty" would mean that the aerodynamics can still generate sufficient downforce with/in it.
    Correct?

    It funny you should mention there was an idea to do away with the front wings all together because back in 82 the cars were creating so much down force with the gound effects that the only thing the front wing did was to tune the car to the drivers liking. Ifact cars ofyen raced with out the front wing. With all the modern tools at the disposal of the designers these days l would not be surprised if we get back to that point again.

  • @surenbono6063

    ..I definitely think all car lap should be counted from their start position..this minimize initial racing collisions ( bottleneck collisions).. imagine all car are saperated 100 m apart..it's safer racing..so each car needs separate timers.. it's like everyone starts on the front row..

  • @paulmichaelfreedman8334

    What I see is yet again is one of those parts that can easily be ripped off when two cars get too close. Fortunately it will mean less difference now but as we could see with the 2021 cars, losing part of the wing was disastrous for the downforce. It practically meant you could not win the race anymore. I wouldn't be surprised of the front wing for 2023 season will be even smaller.

  • @runelink2

    Why are there 2 different versions out there of the 2022 nose? There's 1 where the main plane sticks out in front of the nose cone and 1 where it's behind. The concepts they released showed the first example and the real concept car the latter. I've not heard people talk about this for some reason

      It should be much less powerful if there is drastically less loss in downforce. But if cars can follow closer out of a corner onto a straight then they won’t need as much of a slipstream, plus DRS will still be a thing
