Word has it the scene where the Mustang crashed into the ditch in Brisbane was unplanned. Peter Yates was in the backseat operating a camera and told McQueen "you can stop driving, we're out of film". McQueen responded, "that's OK, we're also out of brakes". He halted the Mustang by sliding it into the ditch, breaking the upper ball joint and disabling the car.He just missed hitting the camera men stationed there.

Brings back memories. I was 12 years old when this movie came out. The theater that I saw it in was torn down 40 years ago. But I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

The reason for the initial success of "Bullitt"- and its continuing popularity - is the abundance of location filming, as opposed to the usual Hollywood fake sets that were still prevalent in movies then. A high-speed car chase on REAL streets, not to mention the thrilling shoot-out finale at the United Airlines baggage claim at SFO, made a huge impression on audiences when this movie was new. All this excitement makes you ignore the strange plot that you never really can figure out, or the inconsistencies and continuity glitches in the automobile chase.

I am from San Jose, CA (55 miles south of San Francisco). I remember hearing they were
shooting this film. It came out while I was in the USAF at Vandenberg AFB, CA. It came to the base theater - I sat thru it 3X the first night it was shown. It was one of the most popular
movies of that time period. I only got to meet Steve McQueen one time - but got 3 in-person autographs from him. Prior to meeting him I asking the lady working in the wardrobe department what kind of cigarettes he smoked. So when approaching him I
pulled out a cartoon of cigs for him - he thought that was nice - and gladly signed. Steve
McQueen was truly in a class by himself and was saddened to hear when he died at the
age of only 50. The terms icon and superstar at thrown around too easily - but Steve
was truly in a class all his own and was and still is an icon. RIP. Roger C.

I’m 62. Bullitt has and always will be my favorite all time movie. The chase scene was by far the best ever done. Then and know as far as I’m concern. Steve McQueen is BOSS. Always will be in my book. To this day I tell the younger generation about this movie and the car chase scene. I have a movie poster that was used to promote the movie in my room. I often wondered how much of the Scenery in the movie changed over the years during the car chase scene. Thank you for recreating the background chase scene. And he end scene with you in bed was totally hilarious. Kudos to you my brother.

That was an amazing frame by frame recreation of the original. From the looks of it, a lot has changed since 1968 and a lot hasn't. Noticed more stoplights and a bit more development, but it isn't like the rest of the country. This remake makes the locations today recognizable. Again, great job.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The reason you see the same dark green VW Beetle four times in the chase scene is because this particular segment, on this hill, was shot with four different cameras in four locations. The footage was then edited into different places in the chase to make it look like more than one place. Unfortunately, the Beetle is so distinctive that you notice it each time.
When "Bullitt" was new, I really liked the appearance of this (new) Volkswagen color, and was very pleased to get a new Beetle in 1971 that was the same color. Unfortunately my Beetle came to its end upside-down on a freeway embankment in 1978 - not due to a car chase.

Well done. If anyone who loves this movie also likes Eastwood, check out the scene late in Bullitt where he’s at the SFO airport waiting for the Pan Am 707 to return to the gate when you hear a flight announcement in a woman’s voice: “flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……… .”
5 years later in Magnum Force, Eastwood plays Dirty Harry, another SF homicide cop based on the same true life character as Bullitt. Early in that film Harry is also at the SFO airport walking through the terminal when you hear: “American Airlines flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……. .”
Yes - both movies used the same archive recorded announcement. Small world.

This is not only great work, but shows what a classic American city San Francisco is. It looks almost exactly the same 50 years after the film was made. You can't do that in New York. With its hi-rises and theme park look, trying to match scenes from THE FRENCH CONNECTION or THE GODFATHER would be nearly impossible.

Outstanding.. I like the overlay of music into the chase actually.. I built a Bullitt replica after years of research and discussions with one of the actual stunt drivers. It was a cosmetic total rebuild/clone externally but had a tremec 5 speed, 392 Ford Motorsports crate engine and subframe build, 3:50 Currie industries posi diff and Maier Racing custom internal roll bar that you had to look twice to see. I lived in SF and drove this route many times. Special movie and SF used to be a special place to live.. no more..
Bullitt stands as the coolest movie ever between the chase, the soundtrack which doesn't have a single bad song, all excellent, locations, scenery and McQueen, Bissett, Vaughn, Duvall, etc etc.. I also built a exact Charger duplicate which now resides in the Midwest. The Bullitt car still resides in SF Bay Area. Thanks for the work that went into this post!

So many years that he passed away by double heart attack, after his cancer surgery. But Steve fascinates so much people. We had his movies and pictures and so the legend never die. Kudos to Mr. Attia. He has done a phenomenal job of tracking down most all the camera locations & shots for this famous car chase scene. Continuity wise, Bullitt was always severely flawed. The same green VW Beetle gets passed multiple times, not just from different camera angles, but timeline continuity looping due to the chase editing. But, the pacing, music, editing & flow still puts Bullitt in the top of anyone's short list all-time best car chase scenes.

Excellent. Stayed in the Amsterdam Hostel on Taylor Street back in April this year and quickly realised where we were. My surname is Mason, we were just round the corner from Mason Street and then went to pick up a cheap Toyota Yaris to drive across USA to Boston in. When we got to the rental place on Bush Street the guy upsold us to a bright red 2013 Mustang and then dropped the one way fee!!. We ended up in the Mustang for $6.00 less than the Yaris would have been with the one way fee. What a way to travel across America. We were skint and camped all the way across America. It was early in the season and many of the state and national parks were not yet open for the season. All the same we camped in many of them and cleared off early in the morning. It all felt a bit like another of my fave' American films - Bonnie and Clyde. It all seemed destined to happen. A great way to finish our round the world trip. Well done Herve, excellent to see your Bullitt locations film and the one on Planet of the Apes, we toured through much of that area in the car. greetings from the UK

I love it when McQueen looks at the fresh produce then goes and picks up the frozen meals 😂. Excellent side by side comparisons.

That is absolutely superb. Great job, I visited San Fran 18 months ago just to see the sites where Bullit was filmed. Steve McQueen is my favourite actor and Bullit is my favourite film. Went to Taylor and Clay - my highlight. And I just loved San Fran. One day I will live there.

I really like Robert Vaughn, he was the best at being the asshole in whatever movie he played in. I meant what I said in all good faith, he was great at what he did.

LOVE this! The house in the beginning was built by our family in 1915 and designed by architect Henry C. Smith. It is now the Japanese Consulate. Thanks for making this great clip!
